Reporter it was december of 1978 when masked gunmen stole nearly 6 million in cash and jewelry from a Lufthansa Cargo terminal at new yorks jfk airport. Today the first alleged organized crime associate goes on trial in a case that inspired a film classic. And these are the guys that jimmy put together for what turned out to be the biggest heist in american history. The lufthansa heist. Reporter Martin Scorseses 1990 oscarwinning drama goodfellas tells the story of the new york crime family that orchestrated the brazen heist. And recounts the violent aftermath. Robert de niro played james burke, known as jimmy the gent. He was the suspected ring leader of the crime, a 64minute caper in which six Armed Robbers broke into the lufthansa facility and made off with 6 million in cash and jewelry. So the fact my client didnt get murdered would suggest he didnt have anything to do with it. Reporter prosecutors are expected to introduce wiretaps and something that used to be unusual. Testimony from some of them who were close to him. Thats expected to include asaros cousin and his former Bonanno Family boss. I think the fear from the mob has totally abated. Reporter now, the judge in this case has ruled that prosecutors cannot reference the brutal killings depicted in the movie goodfellas because asaro is not charged with those killings. He does face one murder charge for an unrelated murder in 1969 of another Law Enforcement informant. The fastest oceanliner ever built is now rotting away at a dock in philadelphia. The uss United States made history in the 1950s, but if preservationists dont come up with millions of dollars by the end of the month the ship is headed to the scrap yard. Edward lawrence has the story. Reporter for those who sailed on her it will be a day long remembered. Reporter when she left port on july 3rd, 1952 the uss United States was considered the fastest and most luxurious oceanliner in the world. Its Maiden Voyage across the atlantic took three days ten hours and 42 minutes, a record that still stands today. It was so fast the ships propellers were a cold war secret. The uss United States would become a symbol of postwar american pride, patriotism and power. But after just 17 years on the open water the ship would be retired, never to sail again. How much does it cost to keep it afloat here . The costs are about 60,000 each month. Reporter its been docked here, on the Delaware River in philadelphia, for the past 18 years. And the conservancy that owns it cant afford to keep it here any longer. Susan gibbs is the executive director. It represents the last, best kind of the most iconic achievement in ship building and design here in this nation. Its an engineering marvel, a work of art, and its our history. Its our shared history as a nation. It would be as if the statue of liberty was just kind of chopped off at her knees. How critical is this point in time . We are at the 11th hour. Maybe the 59th minute of the 11th hour. We have never been closer to saving the ship, and we have never been closer to losing it. Reporter gibbs has more than a vested interest. This ship is in her heritage. Her grandfather, William Francis gibbs, built the uss United States. A man with no formal training in Marine Engineering who taught himself how to build ships. During world war ii 3 4 of u. S. Naval vessels built were designed by gibbs firm. As the war ended, he went back to work on the ship he loved more than anything. His biographer, steven ujifusa, spoke to sunday morning back in 2013. He was kind of like steve jobs in that he knew a lot of engineering but he was very much a visionary. Imagine taking a structure the size of the chrysler building, turning it on its side, and pushing it through the atlantic at 44 miles per hour. Thats a heck of a lot of engineering. And on top of that make it the most beautiful ship in the world. Reporter throughout the 1950s it was traveled by celebrities and royalty. Everyone from john wayne and judy garland to the duke and duchess of windsor. And it played a starring role in films like 1953s gentlemen prefer blondes, alongside jane russell and marilyn monroe. That same year cbss Walter Cronkite was a passenger on the uss United States as he traveled to london to cover the coronation of queen elizabeth. To look at her just could fill you with pride and wonder. She just was a magnificentlooking boat. There were more people on this ship than lived in the town that i grew up in. Reporter joe roda was an employee on the ship. His responsibilities included delivering telegrams to harry truman. And he shot this video of the president getting off the boat in france. What was it like being on board . It was special. I think thats the only word i could use. Reporter anybody who made a contribution to this world traveled on board this ship. Reporter but cruise ships suffered as jet planes became more popular in the 1960s. In 1967 William Francis gibbs died, two years before his masterpiece retired from service. And so when the conservancy purchased the vessel in 2011 the first time the Preservation Organization had stepped up to the plate.
