Why would you mess up a veterans place when they are the ones that got you freedoms and stuff right now . Police say someone drove a vehicle through the grass and into the plaza, hitting a column. Heres some of the red paint and stuff that was left. Tire tracks show the driver continued toward a set of memorial benches. Hitting several benches and smashing one into several little pieces. Its just sad. I am more sad than mad. These three were walking past the plaza when they spotted the damage. Even if they are drunk, theres no excuse. Non whatsoever. The vandalism felt personal as this group has family members honored here. Youve always got that small element that will do anything they can do to make it worse for somebody. Dealing nats a few blocks away, its really personal for members of the veterans freedom center. The vandalism was the talk of mondays euchre tournament. The veterans they get stirred up when Something Like this happens. Wagner says, the board is working with police to figure out who did this. But its hard because there are no security cameras around the the plaza. We talked about it and even voted on it. And we never put them in because i thought we wont now thats a change the board plans to make right away. That bench that used to sit right here but was totally obliterated was in memory of the troy brothers from here in dubuque. Vincent and leo troy both served in the United States military during the korean conflict. Live in dubuque, katie wiedemann, kcrgtv9. Turning to weather and meteorologist joe winters. Ames police are investigating a hit and run crash that killed an iowa state student from urbana. Police say an officer found 18yearold emmalee jacobs lying in the road this morning on the south side took jacobs to a hospital, where she later died. Police believe it was an hit and run because of her injuries. This morning about that time, it was still dark. It was raining pretty hard at that point and so that could have all played into what happened, but again theres never a reason for someone to leave the scene of an accident. Investigators say they have not found any witnesses and have not made any arrests. The city of marion is considering building two new fire stations to keep up stations so important to the city . Marion has doubled in size since the the Fire Departments second station opened in 1991. A study says the town will need two new stations within the next few years. All to better serve marion citizens. The Marion Fire Department has wanted a third fire station for a long time. The Fire Department found a location for the new station after the center of Public Safety excellence studied the area. But the study also found marion will need a fourth by the year 2021. Areas of the city, how long it took, and found that there are areas of the city that arent covered as they should be. Weve just had the two stations, and almost doubled in size, so it seems natural that were going to need the station three and four. The study says the new stations should be placed on the north side of town. When the additions are up and running, crews will be able to respond to any residence within city limits in less than four minutes. Krebill says thats crucial. When you look at a medical call, in six to ten minutes the brain, the lungs, and the heart, will die without oxygen. So, its important that we get there before that six minute time frame to begin resuscitation. And it wont only make an safety impact on the town. It saves people money. Marion is one of the communities in iowa that has an iso rating, which is the Insurance Rating for fire coverage of 3, and the lower that number is, the lower the third station is already covered under the citys local option sales tax, and krebil says the city hopes to have it open by 2018. The department will hire three Fire Fighters every year, over the next three, to make sure the station is fully staffed. Fire Department Officials will present the study to Marion City Council members during their meeting tomorrow. If the city accepts the plan, the city will move forward by plotting the stations specific locations. Live in the newsroom, brea love, kcrgtv9 news.
