Researchers in japan are turning to twitter to help save lives. Theyre using tweets to find Early Warning signs of a disaster. And seeing the benefit of when people post their firsthand accounts. Reporter a massive landslide struck a town in naggano prefecture in july. It destroyed or damaged over 40 buildings or homes. 20 minutes before the disaster, someone posted on twitter, its raining like mad. The river is cloudy. The poster was a woman named ito. Translator i was driving, and it was raining so hard that the rain in front of me was like a wall of white. It freaked me out. Reporter what ito saw could have been a sign of a coming landslide. But she didnt think much of it at the time. Translator it was just a tweet, like any other. I posted out of habit. Reporter a joint team of the Land Ministry and private Research Institute is trying to develop a system to look for signs of impending landslides by reading tweets. The team began by studying tweets made during a storm two years ago in southern japan. A number of posts on the day of the disaster featured the phrase, the ground is rumbling. Translator some tweets are from people in imminent risk. Its amazing. Translator i hope the community can share this sense of danger and urgency. Translator tweets describing ominous rumblings appeared at the same time of reports of noise from the ground and mountains. I think it should be useful to collect such information and use it as an Early Warning sign. It could help us evacuate people. Reporter peoples tweets will be analyzed by computer. The system will search for key words that warn of landslides, such as ground rumbling, and send out an alert to local governments as well as residents. It is a challenge for the researchers to decide on the key words. A japanese word that means something like, freaky, or extreme, was often used when a disaster occurred. But the word does not always mean a disaster. Translator on its own, a phrase like hiroshima is getting freaky, doesnt indicate a coming disaster. The question is how we interpret such language. Reporter there are other questions about the credibility of tweets. But the project is still in its early stages. Translator this information is very useful as a starting point. It should help us understand what is going on, where its happening, and what the dangers might be. Reporter the government is funding the project for two years. The researchers hope thats enough time to unlock the potential of tweets as an Early Warning tool. Now the latest on the asian games now under way in south korea, after five days of competition. What weve been seeing out here is fungwong tracking off to the northeast. The latest is fairly heavy precipitation taking place. In the past 24 hours nearly 487 millimeters have come down in the wake of that storm impacting those of you out into eastern china. Making landfall monday night into tuesday. But now we can take a look at this and you have the center of circulation here. The bulk of the cloud cover is going off to the east. Thats what we call wind shear. So right now, the center of circulation, that center line, thats not all that important. The bigger problem is all that cloud cover in the precipitation thats going to be coming out of this. Because as we look ahead through the next 24 hours, on your wednesday, basically the southern half of south korea, as much as 120 millimeters could be seen. You have heavy rainfall warnings out here. Also southerly moisture flow will be impacting parts of the key peninsula. That eventually will hit to tohoku regions by thursday. Heavy showers expected through your midweek. By thursday, it should start to clear up. Then the heaviest stuff is going to be in ti yoet oh, tokyo, particularly on thursday morning. At least by friday as we head into the weekend. This storm system will eventually work off to the northern pacific. It will still have some impact on the tropics, though. We have a new storm down here towards the south. This is a tropical depression expected to become a Tropical Storm in the next 24 hours. This could have an interaction with this and pull it off to the north. Impacting japan, possibly. Still time to watch and see what happens there. Behind the storm, though, high pressures going to be dominating much of china, bringing in drier weather. The indochina peninsula seeing heavy rainfall, and same thing goes here for northeastern india. You remember a few weeks ago, we were talking about the severe flooding back to the west, in cashmere, and also through pakistan. This is a separate event. Still associated with the monsoon. But you can see some areas here, 500 to 600 millimeters of precipitation in the last several days. Lets show the video coming out of here. Its pretty rough images. People having a rough time driving through here. About 40 people have actually died in the flooding and landslides triggered by the heavy rains in northeastern india. District administrations called for a holiday on tuesday in this region, calling for all schools and colleges actually to have been closed due to the flooded roads. Also landslides taking place in the same areas. Meanwhile, about 50 villages have been hit by flash floods. Authorities, plenty of rescues out there. Unfortunately, people are still low on food and water. This is definitely an ongoing situation. Still expecting more rainfall in the next several days. At least weve been seeing the monsoon impacting this area. But it should start to taper off as we look ahead into october with the decreasing southwest monsoon effect out there. Lets wrap things up, and ill talk about a cool storm system off the northwestern u. S. And western canada, too. Look at the swirl on the satellite image. This is a very deep extra tropical low. But it will be bringing typhoon strength winds. Winds upwards of about 120 Kilometers Per Hour in the coastal areas. Also, heavy rainfall as this comes onshore. Another issue with it, its not just the rain, south of where all the precipitation is, you have gusty, dry winds. The risk of fire weather. Thats something to watch out for. Elsewhere across the u. S. , oklahoma city, you could be seeing a few thunderstorms. Fairly dry there in the eenlast. Heres your extended outlook. Thats all for this edition of newsline. Im Catherine Kobayashi in tokyo.
