As worried as it ever has been about the malevolent and murderous influence of isis here in america. The president did not outline any new military strategy to defeat isis, merely summarized the Ongoing Campaign in iraq and syria. He made it clear to the country what he believes happened in San Bernardino. The fbi is still gathering the facts about what happened in San Bernardino but heres what we know. The victims were brutally murdered and injured by one of their coworkers and his wife. So far we have no evidence that the killers were directed by a terrorist organization overseas or that they were part of a broader conspiracy here at home. But it is clear that the two of them had gone down the dark path of radicalization. Embracing a perverted interpretation of islam that calls for war against america and the west. They had stockpiled assault weapons, ammunition and pipe bombs. So this was an act of terrorism. Designed to kill innocent people. The president called on and visa restrictions and he said congress ought to provide him Legal Authority to carry out the military campaign against isis. And in the last part of the speech, the president emphasized American Values are also at stake in this and urged americans not to turn against Muslim Americans. We cannot turn against one another by letting this fight be defined as a war between america and islam. That too is what groups like isil want. Isil does not speak for islam. They are thugs and killers, part of a cult of death, and they account for a tiny fraction of more than 1 billion muslims around the world, including millions of patriotic Muslim Americans who reject their hateful ideology. Moreover, the vast majority of terrorist victims around the world are muslim. Terrorism, we must enlist muslim communities as some of our strongest allies. Rather than push them away through suspicion and hate. That does not mean denying the fact that an extremist ideology has spread within some muslim communities. Theres a real problem that muslims must confront without excuse. Muslim leaders here and around the globe have to continue working with us to decisively and unequivocally reject the hateful ideology that groups like isil and al qaeda promote. To speak out against not just acts of violence but also those interpretations of islam that are incompatible with the values of religious tolerance, mutual respect, and human dignity. But just as it is the responsibility of muslims around the world to root out misguided ideas that lead to radicalization, it is the responsibility of all americans of every faith to reject discrimination. It is our responsibility to admit into this country. Its our responsibility to reject proposals that muslimamericans should somehow be treated differently. Because when we travel down that road, we lose. That kind of divisiveness, that betrayal of our values, plays into the hands of groups like isil. The president also said in addition to betraying American Values that kind of isolating of Muslim Americans or stigmatizing them undermines u. S. Counterterrorism efforts. Major garrett at the white house, thank you. We are learning much more about the couple that carried out wednesdays massacre in San Bernardino. Their radical views and just how they got their assault rifles. Heres carter evans. Reporter from pakistan to america, there are new details about how Tashfeen Malik and Syed Rizwan Farook became radicalized. Both were quiet students. Both became deeply religious. Father at his Southern California home. The elder syed farook told an italian newspaper, my son said he shared isis leader al baghdadis ideology and supported a creation of the islamic state. He was also obsessed with israel. He says his son told him about tensions with a jewish colleague at the San Bernardino health department. Nicholas that willlasinos was among the 14 killed. His wife said her husband, a messianic jew, was outspoken about his susuort for israel. They worked in the same department, both health inspectors. Knowing my husband, if there was something said or he came in being very radical, im sure my husband had plenty to say to him. Reporter investigators still have no clear motive for the attack, other than to say it was terrorism. Farook met his wife in saudi arabia where she had moved from pakistan. Those who knew her called Tashfeen Malik a modern girl who became deeply religious, never today tashfeens uncles home in pakistan was padlocked and abandoned and authorities are telling everyone to stay away. The fbi is now trying to piece together what turned them to terror, to massacre 14 and wound 21 others before dying in a hail of gunfire. The assault weapons they used have now been traced to the home of enrique marquez, next door to where farook once lived. Agents were at the house this afternoon, carting away a Cardboard Box after raiding the home early saturday morning. A source also tells cbs news theyre analyzing gun store e surveillance videos, showing both marquez and farook together. The two men attended the same high school and were close, says neighbor lorena. He would go with syed and work on the cars, they were happy, joked around, you could see them laughing. They spent the whole day, stay there until almost nighttime. That went on for years. They were good iends . They were good friends, i would have to say, for at least a good seven years. Reporter marquez hasnt been the shooting. Law enforcement sources say he checked himself into Mental Health facility shortly after the attack. Marquez was employed as a Security Guard and a Law Enforcement source tells us he has not been interviewed yet. Authorities are taking their time with him because he may be the only credible witness and they want to make sure they dont jeopardize his future testimony. Carter evans, thank you. Welcome to o e overnight news. Im jeff glor. The fbi is investigation the massacre in San Bernardino as an act of terrorism. Shortly before syed farook and his wife Tashfeen Malik opened fire, tashfeen pledged allegiance to isis on facebook. The attack left 14 dead at a president obama addressed the nation last night from the oval l office. On wednesday 14 americans were killed as they came together to celebrate the holidays. They were taken from family and friends who loved them deeply. They were white and black, latino and asian, immigrants and americanborn. Moms and dads, daughters and sons. Each of them served their fellow citizens. L of them were part of our american family. Tonight i want to talk with you about this tragedy, the broader threat of terrorism, and how we can keep our country safe. The fbi is still gathering the facts about what happened in San Bernardino, but heres what we know. The victims were brutally murdered and injured by one of their coworkers and his wife. So far we have no evidence that the killers were directed by a or that they were part of a broader conspiracy here at home. But it is clear that the two of them had gone down the dark path of radicalization, embracing a perverted interpretation of islam that calls for war against america and the west. They had stockpiled assault weapons, ammunition, and pipe bombs. So this was act of terrorism designed to kill innocent people. Our nation has b bn at war with terrorists since al qaeda killed nearly 3,000 americans on 9 11. In the process weve hardened our defenses, from airports to Financial Centers to other critical infrastructure. Intelligence and Law Enforcement agencies have disrupted countless plots, here and overseas, and worked around the clock to keep us safe. Our military and counterterrorismrofessionals have relentlessly pursued terrorist net works overseas, disrupting safe havens in several different countries, killing osama bin laden, and decimating al qaedas leadership. Over the last few years, has evolved into a new phase. As weve become better at preventing complex, multifaceted attacks like 9 11, terrorists turn to less complicated acts of violence like the Mass Shootings that are all too common in our society. Here at home we have to Work Together to address the challenge. Theres several steps that congress should take right away. To begin with, congress should act to make sure no one on a nofly list is able to buy a gun. What could possibly be the argument for allowing a terror suspect to buy a semiautomatic weapon . This is a mamaer of national security. We also need to make it harder for people to buy powerful assault weapons like the ones that were used in San Bernardino. I know there are some who reject any gun safety measures, but the fact is that our intelligence d Law Enforcement agagcies, no matter how effective they are, mass shooter. Whether that individual is motivated by isil or some other hateful ideology. What we can do and must do is make it harder for them to kill. Next we should put in place stronger screening for those whoho come to america a thout a visa so that we can take a hard look at whether theyve traveled to war zones. And were working with members of both parties in congre to do exactly that. Finally, if congress believes as i do that we are at war with isil, it should go ahead and vote to authorize the continued use of military force against these terrorists. For over a year i have ordered our r litary to take thousands of air strikes against isil targets. I think its time for congress to vote to demonstrate that the American People are united a a committed to this fifit. My fellow americans, these are together to defeat the terrorist threat. Let me now say a word about what we should not do. We shohod not be drawn once more into a long and costly ground war in iraq or syria. Thats what grouou like isil want. They know they cant defeat us on the battlefield. Isil fighters were part of the insurgency that we faced in iraq. But they also know that if we occupy foreign lands, they can maintain insurgencies for years, killing thousands of our troops, draining our resources, and using our presence to draw new recruits. The strategy that we are using now air strikes, special forces, and working with local forces who are fighting to regain control of their own country that is how well achieve a more sustainable victory. And it wont require us sending a new generation of americans overseas to fight and die for heres what else we cannot do. We cannot turn against one another by letting this fight be defined as a w between america and islam. That too is what groups like isil want. Isil does not speak for islam. They are thugs and killers, part of a cult of death. And they account for a tiny fraction of a more than 1 billion muslims around the world, including millions of patriotic Muslim Americans who reject their hateful idea ol. Moreover, the vast majority of terrorist victims around the worlare muslim. If were to succeed in defeating terrorisis we must enlist muslim communities as some of our strongest allies. Rather than push them away through suspicion and hate. Fact that an extremist ideology has spread within some muslim communities. Theres a real problem that muslims must confront without excuse. Muslim leaders here and around the globe have to continue working with us to decisively and unequivocally reject the hateful ideology that groups like isil and al qaeda promote. It is our responsibility to reject religious tests on who we admit into this country. Its our responsibility to reject proposals that Muslim Americans should s sehow be treated differently. Road, we lose. That kind of divisiveness, that betrayal of our values, plays into the hands of groups like isil. Muslim americans are our friends and our neighbors. Our coworkers, our sports heroes. And yes, they are our men and women in uniform who are willing to die in defense of our country. We have to remember that. Thank you. God bless you. And may god blesesthe United States of america. The terror attacks in San Bernardino have had a big impact on president ial campaigns. Democrats are pushing for stronger gun regulations. Republicans are blaming the prprident for not being tough tougher on terrorism. The strongest criticism is coming from gop president ial frontrunner donald trump. And John Dickerson spoke to trump for face the nation. There are links between i is and the terrrrist attack in san flags. How do you stop this from happening again . I think there are red flags and a lot of people knew what was going on in that house or that apartment and people were not wanting to call because they thought it would be inappropriate to call. Inappropriate why . They were saying that it was that they would have been profiling. D a person said, we e rt of knew what was going on but we dont want to profile. Can you believe this . Should there be profiling . I think there can be profiling. How would that work . If they thought there was something wrong with that group and they saw what was happening and they didnt want to call the police because they didnt want to be profing . I think thats pretty bad. A lot of people are dead right now. Everybody wants to be politically correct and thats part of the problem we have with our country. Have people been too politically correct with muslims in america . I think so. Maybe with other things too. I think certainly so. I came out with i want vigilance. I want real vigilance. It has to be. But a lot of bad things are happening. Whatever it has to be. Does that include i know you where are you on the question of tracking muslims in america . Well, look, we are having a problem with radicals, with the radicals in the muslim group. Lets not kid ourselves. And you can say it or you dodot have to say it and maybe you wont even want to but ive been saying it loud and strong. So if you have people coming out of mosques with hatred and with ath in their eyes and on their minds, were going to have to do something, john. We cant just say, were not going to look at it. Now, i made that statement a number of weeks ago. It took a lot of a lot of whatever, a lot of people were t exactly thrilled w wh it. Now everybody seems to agree with me. This idea of tracking muslims in america, where are you on that . You have people who have to be tracked. If theyre muslims theyre muslims. You have people who have to be tracked. We have to show vigilance, we have to have i if we dont were foolish people. Were really were being led people that dont know whats happening. When you have president obama talking about Global Warming is our biggest problem, we have a president that is just not with it at all. There are 3 million muslims in america. Whatathould they feel abouou their place in American Life now . Look, we are having a tremendous problem with radical islamic terrorism. You can say it or you dont t ve to say it. And we have a president that wont issue the term, he wont talk about it. So were having this tremendous radical islac terrorism, okay . A lot of the peoeoe dont want to even say it. Not a lot of people. We have one person that i really know of, its called president obama. Until he admits that this is a problem were never going to solve the problem. But hes only going to be there fortunately a little over a year. Ththproblem will get solold when he gets the hell out. You mentioned political the criticism of you is that you ararplaying on fears thahapeople have no, im playing on common sense. No, im not playing on fears, i dont want to play on fears. I understand the whole world and i understand. I have muslim friends who are great people. By the way, they tell me theres a big problem. Im m t playing on fears, m playing on common sense. We have a problem. The World Trade Center came down. By the way, speaking of coming down, they put their families on airplanes a couple of days before, sent them back to saudi arabia for the most part. Those wives knew exactly what was going to happen. And those wives went home to watch their husbands knock down the World Trade Center, the pentagon, and wherever the third plane was going, except we had some very, very brave passengers, wherever that third plane was going. Those wives knew exactly what was happening. You mentioned the families, going after the families. What does that mean . Going after, we, at least i would certainly go after the was happeninin and i guess your definition of what id do, im going to leave that to your imagination. But i will tell you i would d very tough on families. Because the families know whats happening. Even in this last instance. I see everybody knew. So many people knew. They thought that this man and this woman, whether he was radicalized or how he became they thought something was going on. Why dont these people report it to the police . Why wouldnt they report it to the police . They said it was profiling, they didnt want to profile. Can you believe this . Ey didnt want to profile even though they thought something very bad was going on. His sister said she didnt know what was going on, she was crestfallen for the victims i dont believe theheister. You dont believe the sister . Youugo after her . I would go after a lot of people and id find out whether r not they knew. Id be able to find out. I dont believe the sister. Do you worry about creating more terrorists . No we have to stop terrorists. The only way youre going to stop them, in my opinion, is you know, they say they dont mind dng. I think they do mind dying. But i can tell y y this, they want their families left alonene we have to stop terrorism. You dont think theres a worry, a tension if you go too far that you end up creating more terrorists . Whats too far . Theyre killing people. Whether its what we just saw in california or in paris. Theyre killing people. Innocent people. People without guns. Yoy look at paris. No guns. Nothing. You look at california. No guns. I can tell you one thing, if im in there and i have a gun, were going down, were going to knock them out one way or the other. A couple of guns are in that room, yoyotalk about second amendment, which im a big believer in the second amendment. In paris they had no guns. In california they had no guns. Only the bad guys had the guns. So they were like sitting ducks, every one of them. Should the good guys s t guns . Well, i mean, the good guys could people carry it . If they want to they should be able, to its going to be a lot safer. Areas. How about the school a few months ago. Gunfree school, gunfree area, you look at what happened. It was a disgrace. If people had guns hoabout the soldiers that were killed . Six soldiers killed. Champion marksmen a military base. Theyre not allowed to carry their guns. And a whack job walks in and kills them. Not right. So i am a believer in the second amendment. And you know, the bottom line is, the bad guys are always going to have the guns. We better do something about it. Paris is one of the toughest cities in the world for guns. Right . You cant get them. And you had carnage. Why do you think people join isis in the United States . Well, i think for one reason theyre ususg the internet a lot better than we do. And theyre brainwashing these kids. The word is brainwashing. The cbs overnight news will be right back. I have asthma. So we did a lot of work to tell them how you should behave in a theater. Reporter graves has seen audiences start to mature. Hes directed more than 100 shows in china. How difficult is it to take a western show and make it something that can be appreciated by a chinese audience . Its pretty difficult. Particularly with musical theater. Because youve got rhymed lyrics. Reporter avenue q, a coming of age story, uses homosexuality to finding a job. And audience member lee chen said those themes are universal. T tyre young people, t tyre looking for their goal. Their goal . Their goal. This is like a normal problem to us. Reporter though graves said adapting the show for the chinese audience took some work. For instance, one of the musical numbers in avenue q is everybody is a little bit racist. And d cism in the sense that we would experience it in america doesnt really exist here. So we changed it to everybody is a little bit provincial. That people from one province talk too loud, people from another province youve got to watch your money with them. Those things Chinese People joke about among each other. Reporter and this being china theres the added issue of censnsship. Shows have to be approved by censors in each city. Censorship board in china . Yes, particularly this crowd. Because people still think its very serious. Were trying to make it funny, to make it a comedy. So its a distance between those two places. Reporter graves loves the chinese audiences come without preconceived notions and says its exciting to see an entire in a country of 1. 4 billion people, we have three theater schools where maybe a few thousand people go a year. The president addresses the nation on terrorism, guns, and the investigation in San Bernardino. This was an act of tetrorism, designed to kill innocent people. Cbs news spoke with a former coworker who watched as one of the killers became radicalized. Stunning onscene violence from Security Guards following Mark Zuckerberg and backlash. Plus the symphony. Saved by video games . If you really want to hear an orchestra, the answer may be video games. This is thehe cbs overnight news. Welcome to the overnight news. Im jeff glor. President obama hadnt addressed the nation from the oval office in over five years. That changed last night. The president said the terrorist threat has evolved into a new phrase but he says the u. S. Will overcome. This as he updated the investigation inn the attacac in San Bernardino in a primetime speech. It was the first time the president had spoken from the oval office since august 2010 when the u. S. Combat mission ended in iraq. Jor garrett is at the white house with details, major . Reporter good even. The president knows the country is on edge. Malevolent and murderous influence of isis here in america. The president did not outline any new military strategy to defeat isis, merely summarized the Ongoing Campaign in iraq and syria. He made it clear to the country what h hbelieves happened ininan bernardino. The fbi is still gathering the facts about what happened in San Bernardino but heres what we know. The victims were brutally murderer and injured by one of their coworkers and his wife. So far we have no evidence that the killers were directed by a terrorist organization overseas or that they were part of a broader conspiracy here at me. But it is clear that the two of them had gone down the dark path of radicalization. Embracing a perverted interpretation of islam that calls for war against america and the west. They had stockpiled assault weapons, ammunition and pipe bombs. So this was an act of terrorism. Designed to o ll innocent people. Congress so tighten gun control and visa restrictions and he said congress ought to prode him Legal Authority to carry out the military campaign against isisis and in the lastt part of the speech, the president emphasized American Values are also at stake in this and urged americans not to turn against muslimamericans. We cannot turn against onene another by letting this fight be define the as a war between america and islam. That too is what groups like isil want. Isil does not speak for islam. They are thugs and killers, part of a cult of death, and they account for a tiny fraction of more than 1 billion muslims around the world, including millions of patriotic muslimamerican hot reject their hateful ideology. Moreover, the vast majority of terrorist victims around the world are muslim. If were to succeed in defeating terrorism, we must enlist muslim strongest allies. Rather than push them ay throughh suspicion and hate. That does not mean denying the fact that an extremist ideology has spread within some muslim communities. Theres a reall problem thatt muslims must confront without excuse. Muslim leaders here and around the globe have to continue working with us to decisively and unequivocally reject the hateful ideologyy thatt groups like isil and al qaeda promote. Reject religioio tests on who we admit into this country. Its our responsibility to reject proposals that muslimamericans should somehow be treated differently. Because when we travel down that road, we lose. That kind of divisiveness, that betrayal of our values, plays into the hands of gros like isil. The president also said in addition to betrayiyi American Values that kind of isolating of muslimamericans or stigmatizing them undermines u. S. Countertrorism efforts. Major garrett at the white hohoe, thank you. We are learning much more about the couple that carried out wednesdays mass killings in San Bernardino. Their radical rues and just how they got their assault rifles. Heres carter ans. Reporter from pakistan to america, there are new details about how Tashfeen Malik and syed farook became radicalized. Both became deeply religious. Today we heard froro farooks father at his Southern California home. The elder syed farook told an italian newspaper, my son said he shared isil leader al babadadis ideology and supported a creation of the islamic state, he was also obsessed with israel. He says his son told him about tensions with a jewish colleague at the San Bernardino health department. Nicholol val hasasinos was among the 14 killed. His wife said her husband, a messianic jew, was spoke about his support for israel. They worked in the same department, both health inspectors. Knowing my husband, if there was something said or he came in being very radical, im sure my husband had plenty to say to him. Reporter investigators still have no clear motive for the tack, other than to say it was terrorism. Farook met his wife in saudi arabia where she had moved from pakistan. Those who knew her called Tashfeen Malik a modern girl who an extremist. Today tashfeens uncles home in pakistan was padlocked and abandoned and authorities are telling everyone to stay away. The fbi is now trying to piece together what turned d em to terror, to massacre 14 and wound 21 others before dieing in a hail of gunfire. The assault weapons they used have now been traced to the home of enrique marquez, next doorr to where farook once lived. Agents were at the house this afternoon, carting away a Cardboard Box after raiding the home early saturday morning. A source also tells cbs news theyeye analyzing gun store surveillance videos, showing both marquez and farook together. The two men attended the same hi school and were close, says neighbor lorena. T ty would go with syed, they were happy, joked around, you could see them laughing. They spent the who day, stay there until almost nighttime. That went on for years. They wewe good friends . They were good friends, i would have to say, for at least reporter marquez hasnt been seen in the neighborhood since the shooting. Law enforcement soces say he checked himself into a Mental Health facilily shortly after the attack. Marquez was employed as a Security Guard and a Law Enforcement source tells us he has not been interviewed yet. Auththities are taking t tir time with him because he may be the only credible witness and they want to make sure they dont jeopardize his future testimony. Carter evans, thank you. [ vocalizing ] [ buzzing ] [ tree crashes ] [ wind howling ] david begno spoke with an old friend ofyed farook who witnessedd his troubling changes. I was trying to call him as i called every Single Person that possibly could have been in that building. To find out they were okay. And im over here calling this guy to find out if hes okay, you know, its very difficult. Reporter chazz harrison, former coworker and College Classmate of mass shooter Syed Rizwan Farook. Syed was a talker. A lot of people think he was very quiet. I didnt get that impression. Tell me some of what you told the fbi. He was passionate about his religion. I let the fbi know that. Didnt want to be in the ited states. He had planned on leaving the e united s stes. There was several occasions where i thought he was going to be leaving the United States. Where did he want to move to . He wanted to move to dubai. What definitely did he tell you about not wanting to be in the u. S. . Syed didnt want to be in the United States because he told me him paying taxes was helping the United States support basically the war on islam. What did you know about his wiwi . Was very secretive about his wife. He didnt want to reveal much about his wife. I can see he wasnt really comfortable speaking about her. What he did tell me is that she was a pharmacist in her country. And he also told me that she didnt want to be here neither. Did you ever think he would do that . . Never talked about wanting to hurt americans. Syeds thing was he had to leave her because he couldnt live here. He nev talked about harming americans. He hated living in america that much . Im not saying hated. Hes just saying that he couldnt be here. And practice his religign the way i felt like maybe he wanted to. Hairrrison says farook last in previous conversations farook confided his wife was uncomfortable in the u. S. Because people would stare at her based on what she wore, a dress that shields just about everything on a womanss body except hereyes. David begno in los angeles. Around the Silicon Valley billionaire set, what seems to be happening is they like this blended approach where there is some c crity but thehe is forprofit, there is some lobbying arm here. Welcome to the overnight news. Im jeff glor. The fbi is investigation the shootings in San Bernardino as an act of terrorism. Tashfeen malik pledged allegiance to isis on facebook. The attack left 14 d ad at a president obama addressed the nation last night from the oval office. On wednesday 14 americans were killed as they came together to celebrate the holidays. They were taken from family and friends who loved them deeply. They were white a a black, latino and asian, immigrants and americanborn. Moms and dads, daughters and sons. Each of th served their fellow citizens. All of them were partrtf our american family. Tonight i want to talk with you about this tragedy, the broader threat of terrorism, and how we can keep our country safe. The fbi is stillll gathering the facts about what happened in San Bernardino, but heres what we know. The victims were brutally murdered and injured by one of thei coworkers and his wifif so far we have no evidence that the killers were directed by a terrorist organization overseas or that they were part of a broader conspiracy here at home. But it is clear that the two of of radicalization, embracing a perverted interpretation of islam that calls for war against america and the west. Weapons, ammunition, and pipe bombs. So this was an act of terrorism designed to kill innocent people. Our nation has been at war with terrorists since al qaeda killed nearar 3,000 americans on 9 11. In the process weve hardened our defenses, from airports to Financial Centers to other critical infrastructure. Intellllence and Law Enforcement agencies have disrupted countless plots, here and overseas, and work the around the clock to keep us safe. Our military and counterterrorism officials have relentlessly pursued terrorist networks overseas, disrupting safe havens in several different countries, killing osama bin laden, and decimating alaedas leadership. This is a matter of national security. We also need to make it harder for people to buy powerful assault weapons like the ones that were used in San Bernardino. I know there are some who reject any gun safety measures, but the fact is that our intelligence and law enfnfcement agencies, no matter how effective they are, mass shooter. Whether that individual is motivated by isil or some other hateful ideology. What we can do and must do is make it harder for them to kill. Next we should put in place stronger screening for those who come to america without a visa so that we can take a hard look at whether theyve traveled to war zones. And were working with members of body parties in congress to do exactly that. Finally, if congress believes as i do that we are at war with isil, it should go ahead and vote to authorize the continued use of military force against these terrorists. For over a year i have ordered our military to take thousands of air strikes against isil targets. I think its time for congress to vote to demonstrate that the American People are united and cocoitted to this fight. My fellow americans, these are the steps that we can take together to defeat the terrorist let me now say a word about what we should not do. We should not be drawn once more into a long and costly ground war in iraq or syria. Thats what groups like isil want. They know they cant defeat us on the battlefield. Isil fighters were part of the insurgency that we faced in iraq. But they also knowhat if we occupy foreign lands, they can maintain insurgencies for years, killing thousands of our troops, draining our resources, and using our presence to draw new recruits. The strategy that we are using now air strikes, special forces, and working with local forces who are fighting to regain control of their own country that is how well achieve a more sustainable victory. And it wont require us sending a new generation of americans overseas toight and die for heres what else we cannot do. We cannot turn against one another by letting this fight be defined as a war between america and d lam. That too is what groups like isil want. Isil does not speak for islam. They are thugs and killers, parar of a cult of death. And they account for a tiny fraction of a more than 1 billion muslims around the world, including millions o o patriotic Muslim Americans who reject their hateful idea ol. Moreover, the vast majority of terrorist victims around the world are muslim. If were to succeed in defeating terrorism, we must enlist muslim communities as some of our strongest allies. Rather than push them away through suspicion and hate. That does not mean denying the fact that an extremist ideology theres a reaproblem that excuse. The terror attacks in San Bernardino have had a big impact on president ial campaigns. Democrats are pushing for stronger gun regulations. And John Dickerson spoke to trump for face thehe nation. There are links between Isis Bernardino but there were no red flags. How do you stop this from happening again . If they thought there was something wrong with group and they saw what was happening and they didnt want to call the police because they didnt want to be profiling . I think thats pretty bad. A lot of people are dead right now. W. So everybobo wants to be politically correct and thats part of the problem we have with our country. Have people been too politically correct with muslims in america . I think so. Maybe with other things so. I think certainly so. I came out with i want vigilance whether its mosques or whatever it has to be. But a lot of bad things are happening. Hatever it has to be. Does that include i know you where are you on the question of tracking muslims in america . Well, look, we are having a problem withth radicals, with the radicals in the muslim group. Lets not kid ourselves. And you can say it or you dont have to say it and maybe you wont evenant to but ive been saying it loud and strong. So if you havee people coming out of mosques with hatred and with death in their eyes and on their minds, were going to have to do something, john. We cant just say, were not ing to look at it. Now, i madee that statement a number of weeks ago. It took a lot of a lot of whatever, a lot of people were not exactly thrilled with it. Now everybody seems to agree with me. His idea of traraing muslims in america, where are you on that . You have people who have to be tracked. If theyre muslims theyre muslims. We have to show vigilance, we have to have it. If we dont were foolish people. Were really were being led by people that dont know twhaes happening. When you have president obama talking about Global Warming is ouriggest problem, we have a president that is just not with it at all. There are 3 million muslims in america. What should they feel about their place in American Life now . Look, we are having a tremendous problem with radical islamic terrorism. You can say it or you dont have to say it. And we have a president that wont issue the term, he wont talk about it. So were having this tremendous radical islamic terrorism, okay . A lot of the people dont want to even say it. Not a lot of people. We have one pern that i really know of, its called president obama. Until he admits that this is a problem were never going to solve the problem. But hes only going to be there fortunately a little over a the oblem will get solved when he gets the hell out. You mentioned politic correctness about mumu lips. Are playing on fears that people have no, im playing on common sense. No, im not playing on fears, i dont want to play on fears. I understand the whole world and i i derstand. I haveuslim friends who are great people. By the way, they tell me theres a big problem. Im not playing on fears, im playing on common sense. We have a problem. The World Trade Center came down. By the way, speaking of coming down, they put their families on airplanes a couple of days before, sent them back to saudi arabia for the most part. Ose wives knew exactly what was going to happen. And those wives went home to watch their husbands knock down the World Trade Center, the pentagon, and wherever the third plane was going, except we had some very, very brave passengers, wherever that third plane was going. Those wives knew exactly what wa happening. You menenoned the families, going after thee familieie what does that mean . Going after, well, at least i would certainly go after the was happening. And i guess your defefition of what id dodoim going to leave that to your imagination. But i will tell you i would be very tough on families. They didnt want to profile even though they t tught something very bad was going on. His sister said she didnt know what was going on, she was crestfallen for the victims i dont believe the sister. You dont believe the sister . Youd go after her . I would go after a lot of people and id find out whether or not they knew. Id be able to find out. I dont believe the sister. Do you worry about creating more terrorists . No we have to stop terrorists. The only way youre going to that way. You know, they say they dont mind dying. I think they do mind dying. But i can tell you this, they want their families left alone. We have to stop terrorism. You dont think theres a worry, a tension if you gooo far that you end up creating more terrorists . Whats too far . Theyre killing people. Whether its what we just saw in california or in paris. Theyre killing people. Innocent people. People withoutut guns. You look at paris. No guns. Nothing. You look at california. No guns. I can tell you one thing, if im in there and i have a gun, were going wn, were going to knock them out one way or the other. A couple of guns are in that room, you talk about second amendment, which im a big believer in the second amendment. In paris they had no guns. In california they had no guns. Only the bad guys h h the guns. So they were like sitting ducks, every one of them. Should the good guys get guns . Well, i mean, the good guys could people carry it . If they wantnto they should be abab, to its going to be a look at whats going on. Were going into these gunfree areas. How about the school a few monthsago. Gunfree school, gunfree area, you look at what happened. It was a disgrace. If people had guns how about the soldiers that were killed . Six soldiers killed. Champion marksmen on a military base. Theyre not allowedo carry their guns. Well, i think for one reason theyre using the internet a lot better than we do. And theyre brainwashing these kids. The i asked my dentist if an electric toothbrush was going to clean better than a manual . He said sure. But dont get just any one. Get one inspired by dentists. With a round brush head. Go pro with oralb. Oralbs rounded brush head cups your teeth to break up plaque and rotates to sweep it away. And oralb delivers a clinically proven superior clean versus sonicare diamondclean. My mouth feels super clean. Oralb know youre getting a superior clean. Im never going back to a manual brush. Your clever moves wont stop the cold and flu. But disinfecting with lysol can. Lysol wipes and spray are approved to kill more types of germs than clorox. To help keep your family healthy, jill and kate use the same dishwasher. Same detergent. But only jill ends up with wet, spotty glasses. Kate adds finish jetd with five popor actions that dry dishes and prevent spots and film, so all thats left is the shine. For better results, use finish jetdry. American bususesses often complain how difficult it is to enter the chinese marketplace. One broadway producer has managed to get his show onstage in beijing. Seth doane reports how he did it. Reporter avenue q, a musical setn new york about new yorkers. But listen, the songs, the and this performance is in beijing. Is it a challenge to direct in china . Yeah. Its a big challenge. Mainly because im so old and stupid, i cant learn this beautiful language. Reporter director joseph graves, an american, says language is not the only hurdle. There is relatively sophisticated audiences in beijing and shanghai. But as we get out into other cities, a lot of the others dont know what musical theater is, often dont know what a play is. Reporter chinese opera, he points out, dates back thousands of years. But western musicals like phantom of the opera, currently playing in beijing, and avenue q, thats newew yuyu jaoming, ceo of seven ages, the company that brought it to china, sees business opportunity. T this time, Chinese People are getting more and more money but they need very good culture content. It to them and hopes chinas movie industry may be a model. Box office sales tripled in four years, from 1. 5 billion in 2010 to 30 billion by 2014. When we were sitting watching the petformance, i saw some of the ushers trying to get people to stop taking pictures. Yes. We dont really have like a theatergoer abits or a tradition here. Theyre young people, theyre looking fofo their goal. Their goal . Their goal. This is like a normal problem to us. Reporter though graves said adapting the show for the chinese audience took some work. For instance, one of the musical numbers in avenue q is everybody is a little bit racist. And`racismn the sense that we would experience it in america doesnt really exist here. So we changed it to everybody is a little bit provincial. That people from one province talk too loud, people froro another province youvee got too watch your money with them. Those things Chinese People joke about among each other. Reporter and this being china theres the added issue of censorship. Shows have to be approved by what is it like going to the Censorship Board in china . You imagine it being dark, a house on the hill very dangerous, you must approach them with a gun, bomb. No. Ive been to two of them, actually gone into the offices, sit down. Theyre regular businesslooking people. And they bring you a cup of coffee a sit down and say, how can we solve this problem . Reporter backstage, we met lead actor kane liu. He told us the racy and satirical content canan confuse older audiences who dont know what to expect. Some of these issues have been offlimits here in china. Yeah. Or theyre more difficult to discuss. Yes, particularly this crowd. Because people still think its very serious. Were trying to make it funny, to make it a comedy. So its a distance between those two places. Reporter graves loves the chineseudiences come without preconceived notions and says in a country of 1. 4 billion people, we have three theater schools where maybe a few thousand people go a year. So most of the artists havent had a chance to even know im an artist yet. Reporter china, already known for being the worlds factory, may one day be producing and exporting chinesemade musicals too. For others check back with us a little later for the morning news and cbs is morning. The president addresses the nation on terrorism, guns, and ththinvestigation in sanan bernardino. This was an act of terrorism, designed to kill innocent people. Cbs news spoke with a former coworker who watched as one of the killers became radicalized. Stunning onfield violence a College Football game. Mark zuckerbergs 45 billion move and a backlash. Plus the symphony. Saved by video games . If you really want to hear an over committees strarks your interest may not be bach, beethoven and brahms, it may be video games. This is the cbs overnight news. Welcome to the overnight news. Im jeff glor. President obama hadnt addressed the nation from the oval office in over five years. That changed last night. The president said the terrorist threat has evolved into a new phrase but he says the u. S. Will overcome. This as he updated the in san bernardinin a primetime speech. It was the first time the president had spoken from the e oval office since august 2010 when the u. S. Combat mission ended in iraq. Major garrett is at the white house with details, major . Reporter good evening, jeff. The president knows the country as worried as it ever has been about the malevolent and murderous influence of isis here in america. The president did not outline any new military strategy to defeat isis, merely summarized the Ongoing Campaign in iraq and syria. He made it clear to the country what he believes happened in San Bernardino. The fbi is still gathering the facts abououwhat happened in san bebeardino but heres what we know. The victims were brutally murdered and injured by one of their coworkers and his wife. So far we have no evidence that the killers werereirected by a terrorort organization overseas or that they were part of a broader conspiracy here at home. But it is clear that the two of them had gone down the dark path of radicalization. Embracing a perverted interpretation of islam that calls for war against america and the west. Ey had stockpiled assault weapons, ammunition and pipe bombs. So this was an act of terrorism. Designed to kill innocent people. The president called on and visa restrictions and he said congresesought to provide him Legal Authority to carry out the military campaign against isis. And in the last part of the speech, the president emphasized American Values are also at stake in this and urged americans not to turn against Muslim Americans. We cannot turn against one another by letting this fight be defined as a war between america and islam. That t t is what groups likeke isil want. Isil does not speak for islam. They are thugs and killers, part of a cult of death, and they account for a tiny fraction of more than 1 billion muslims around the world, including millions of patriotic slim americans who rejectt their hateful ideology. Moreover, the vast majority of terrorist victims around the world are muslim. Terrorm, we must enlist mumuim communities as some of our strongest allies. Rather than push them away through suspicion and d te. That does not mean denying the fact that an extremist ideology has spread within some muslim communities. Theres a real problem that muslims must confront without excuse. Muslim leaders here and around the glgle have to continue working with us to decisively and unequivocally reject the hateful ideology that groups like isil and al qaeda promote. To spe out against not just acts of violence but also those interpretations of islam that are incompatible with the values of religious tolerance, mutual respect, and human dignity. But just as it is the responsibility of muslims around the world to root out misguided ideas that lead to radicalization, it is the responsibility of all americans of every faith to reject discrimination. It is our responsibility to admit into this country. Its our responsibility to reject proposals that muslimamericans should somehow be treatedifferently. Because when we travel down that road, we lose. That kind of divisiveness, that betrayal of our values, plays into the h nds of groups like isil. The president also said in addition to betraying American Values that kind of isolating of Muslim Americans or stigmatizing them undermines u. S. Counterterrorism efforts. Majaj garrett at the white housus thank you. We are learning much more about the couple that carried out wednesdays massacre in San Bernardino. Their radical v vws and justt how they got their assault rifles. Heres carter evans. Reporter from pakistan to america, there are new details about how Tashfeen Malik and Syed Rizwan Farook became radicalized. Both were quiet students. Both became deeply religious. Today we heard from farooks california home. The elder syed farook told an italian newspaper, my son said he shared isis leader al baghdadis ideology and supported a creation of the islamic state. He was also obsessed with israel. He says his son toldldim about tensions with a jewish colleague at the San Bernardino health department. Nicholas that willlasinos was among the 14 killed. His wife said her husband, a messianic jew, was outspoken about his support for israel. They worked in the same depament, both health inspectors. Knowing my husband, if there was something said or he came in being very radical, im sure my sband had plenty to say to him. Reporter investigators still have no clear motive for the attack, other than to say it was terrorism. Farook met his wife in saudi arabia where she had moved from pakist. Those who knew her called shfeen malik a modern girl who became deeply religious, never today tashfeens uncles home in pakistan was padlocked and abandoned and authorities are teteing everyone to stay away. The fbi is now trying to piece together what turned them to terror, to massacre 14 and wound 21 others before dying in a hail of gunfire. The assault weapons they used have now been traced to the home of enrique marquez, next door to where farook once lived. Agents were at the house this afternoon, carting away a Cardboard Box after raiding the home early satatday morning. A source also tells cbs news theyre analyzing gun store surveillance videos, showing both marquez and farook together. The two meattended the same high school and were close, says neighbor lorena. He would go with syed and work on the cars, they were happy, joked around, you cld see them laughing. They spent the whole dayaystay there until almost nighttime. That went on for years. They were good friends . They were good friends, i would have to say, for at least a good seven years. Reporter marquez hasnt been the shooting. Law enforcement sources say he checked himself into a Mental Health facility shortly after the attack. Marquez was employed as a Security Guard and a Law Enforcement source tells us he has not been interviewed yet. Authorities are taking their time with him because he may be the only credible witness and they want to make sure they dont jeopdize his future testimony. Carter evans, thanknkou. I was trying to call him as i called every Single Person that possibly could have been in that building. To find out they were okay. And im over here calling this guy to find out t hes okay, you know, its very difficult. Reporter chazz harrison, former coworker and College Classmate of mass shooter Syed Rizwan Farook. Syed was a talker. A lot of people think he was very quietet i didnt get that impression. Tell me some of what you told the fbi. He was passionate about his religion. I let the fbi know that. He didnt want to be in the United States. He had planned on leaving the United States. There was several ococsions where i thought he was going to be leaving the United States. Where did he want to move to . He wanted to move to dubai. What definitely did he tell you about not wanting to bin the u. S. . . Was very secretive about his wife. He didnt want to reveal much about his wife. I can see he wasnt really comfortable speaking about her. What he did tell me is that she was a pharmacist in her country. And he also told me that she didnt want to be here neither. Did you ever think he would do that . Never. Never talked about wanting to hurt americans. Syeds thing was he had to leave here because he couldnt live here. He never talked about harming americans. He hated living in america that much . Im not saying hated. Hes just saying that he couldnt be here. And practice his religion the way i felt like maybe he wanted to. Harrison says farook last called him about four months ago. In previous conversations farook confided his wife was uncomfortable in the u. S. Her based on what she wore, a hijab, a dress that shields just abououeverything on a womans body except her eyes. Mark zuckerberg and his wife made headlines last week, pledging to donate 99 of their facebook shares, the stock worth 45 billion right now. Some have been critical of the move. Here to explain, cbs news and Business Analyst jill schlessinger, rst of all why the backlash . Most people have a charitable organization, 501 c 3. Zuckerberg formed something called a limited liability company. It offers more flexibility. Yes that company can give to charity, it can also make donations to politicians, to lobbyists,s,an invest in forprofit ventures. The credits are saying its not subject to irs rules about charity, they dont even have to give away a certain percentage of their assets every year. On the subject of the irs, Tax Advantages here . Yes and no. It was interesting, zuckerberg aefended this position saying, im not a tax dodger and hes right. An llc, whether it gives money to charity or he himself gives to it charity, theres a tax deduction. Theres th talk about, hes giving appreciated shares in cebook and he wont pay tax. That would be the case if any of us did that with a mutual fund that we own. So its not a tax dodge, he right. To giving to charity. Whatever you think of it, this does seem to be a new trend in philanthropy . Around the Silicon Valley billionaire set, what seems to be happening is they like this blended approach where there is some c crity but there is forprofit, there is some lobbying arm here. The thing thats really interesting to me is that they want more accountability. They say they want to give their dollars and maximize those dollars and this structure will do it.
