While the United States strike group is leaving North Korea's Peninsula after heightened tensions there the strike group described by President Donald Trump as his Armada is said to have left the peninsula the u.s.s. Carl Vinson had been conducting military drills with South Korea's navy after tensions with North Korea almost hit crisis point but Dr John Curtis is with us John these tension points they haven't gone away yet no they haven't and they're still test firing missiles and as you know they're working on an i.c.b.m. And a nuclear device to pack into the i.c.b.m. But there is a change and I think it was witnessed by Kim in some statements that he made or some officials that are closely connected to him saying that North Korea does not want war with the United States so I think that you know in this initial confrontation with Trump and Kim Jong un I think Trump got Kim to blink he sent the call Vince Vinson carrier task force out there. Yeah you know today to the coast North Korea you know to the Sea of Japan and came at every opportunity to fire some kind of a warning shot or provocation and I think he's been told to stand down by China and I think he's done it so I think that whatever crisis phase there was in this incident with North Korea it's deescalated now to the point where I think everybody can breathe a little bit easier well but if North Korea continues its new complete program something's going to happen John Wells the nuke program if there is another test then all bets are off but I think at this point it appears that and we don't know how long that will last how long it will be delayed until perhaps there is another new test but I think if there is then I think all bets are off sale All right John Curtis online columnist dot com fashion apparel retailer b.b. Closed its last stores doors today bringing its more than 4 decade run in the industry to an end bricks and mortar it retail getting hit big time by the Internet ride sharing giant were lost over $700000000.00 in its 1st quarter figure reported by The Wall Street Journal revenues were up 18 percent from the previous quarter but the loss was they say an improvement from the 191000000 loss the 1st quarter of a couple days ago we reported that Americans turned on by the thousands to celebrate the life and legacy of President John f. Kennedy on the day he would have turned 100 years old and that got me thinking where was I again when John f. Kennedy was assassinated I was 13 years old I was in 8th grade in Dearborn Heights Michigan My teacher was Miss Nancy Leonard our English teacher she had been called out of the office. To be told this horrible situation and came back in and was crying and told us and keep in mind we're 13 years old because a social network I found missile 100 and I wanted to put her on for just a little bit to talk about that day Nancy I guess I still have to call you Miss Leonard I can't call you Nancy. But it's good after all these years to finally talk with you Do you remember that day quite well. You got I remember you called you were called out of the office and then you came back very tearful. What were the other teachers and were they in the same situation where they all breaking down. Well I I really don't know at the time because you know in going back to the class so we were all you know and all classrooms. I do remember just. When or when I had been in the office that. Somebody had said. Did. Did you hear that the president had been shot and I thought they were making a really bad joke and. It took them a moment to convince me that this wasn't a joke this is really. True and. At that time the president was. Still alive in it and it was. Oh probably a very long answer and you know gone back to class and and then it was I believe announced over the interview yes it was an event that I yes and we were 13 years old Miss wondered it was kind of difficult for us at that age to really grasp and understand what was going on I remember going home my parents were upset they were crying it was just a horrible period for this for this entire country do you remember at all what what we were like in class when you told us what had happened did we get it you know I I really don't remember George I I was so shocked and upset myself that. I wasn't even you know. That aware of you know how the classes was. Reacting and I I do remember thinking that this couldn't possibly be happening in you know assassinations were long ago in history thinking primarily of Allington and. So there's a lot of just. You know difficulty in really grasping the fact that this was true that our president you know had been assassinated and. I wasn't that old myself I think I was on about 25. Pretty fresh as a teacher once your 163 I think it was my 3rd year teaching so you know I wasn't that much older. Than my students but. Now I you know it's funny I just parts of it I remember and then parts of it I just you know a tribute to just kind of being in in shock and. Actually I remember we had the e-mailing in and he said I don't really know what I did in. You know in class I didn't remember right and I told you you were crying I remember right I'm I'm sure that was probably true but I you know I really I don't remember it and I remember. I think it was probably the last class of the day and then. It's a time I was living in an arbor and so my colleague and in a friend that I rode listen we drove back and I are together and and I think we were just off that crying all the way it was suddenly home and they kind of went and. The whole the whole weekend and. I believe Monday. Was the Kennedy funeral so there wasn't school so it was a it was a long weekend was a lot of emotion sure was well I'm glad I found yours let's keep in touch Ok right nice to talk to you hence my English teacher when I was 13 years old. Made the announcement when Kennedy was killed you think back at that time it's pretty emotional. Ok more news than an ever expanding human population an exploding demand for food water and living space will place animals at unprecedented extinction in the next 60 years according to experts they say facing the highest level of threat are more than 360 species of large mammals in Africa. Scientists and clinicians have found that some people who use the Internet a lot experienced significant psychological changes such as increased heart rate and blood pressure when they finish using the Internet let's check wouldn't in with our Thanks bird Warren Weinstein on the Internet why is Lorne you know I'm having trouble figuring out how to follow Miss Leonard here I've got to tell you that's incredible absolutely incredible wonderful wonderful segment Thank you. Ok Internet Yes You know it's funny how we in the past talked about studies that said that using the Internet had had the same effect as their reporting for stopping using the Internet. It seems like no matter what symptom you're looking for there is some way to you can't get away from the you can't get away from the internet yet and there's some way to always blame it or thank it for whatever the symptom is. I'd look at that study and I wasn't terribly impressed because of the way here the methodology of it seemed kind of. Sort of looked like they knew what they wanted when they when they start to use the Internet a lot I'm not I'm not stressed I don't have high blood pressure and my heart rate doesn't go up when I stop using it well that's See there you there are a living example I mean I think we both know what's going on here right I mean anything that's that's done to excess. At it if you do it to excess that you suddenly stop doing it I mean like look at people look people try to stop smoking right smoking is bad for them but if they suddenly stop smoking there can be all kinds of negative effects on their health too if they don't balance it out properly and I think it's the same same thing it's a question of moderation here not spending your entire Even I don't spend my entire Not quite my entire how you spend 90 percent on the idea that you're living a duffel point goes right out there quite a ways but but you know I've been doing it long enough that I have that I think I can balance myself up pretty well but you do have to have to show moderation you have to show balance of what you're doing and the Internet is like anything else it's can be very intense what you're doing it can be obviously can be mentally intense and it's it can be physically too especially if you're sitting all the time so it's no use some common sense right I mean that's what we always say you know how much you're using it when you're using it and then hopefully when you stop using it you won't have a heart attack or so that's right put together couple hours with the executive producer Lisa on robotics they're talking about how you know by 2030 robots will be doing everything we won't be doing anything about robots and artificial intelligence yeah put it together Ok you got it you got it Warren Weinstein thank you President Donald Trump is expected to soon announce he's pulling the United States out of the Paris climate agreement the Accord agreed by the Obama administration along with almost 200 other countries back in 2015 would have forced the United States to reduce fossil fuel emissions by nearly 30 percent by 2025 the devil inside the beltway up next Michael Doherty back on coast to coast as we talk about why we need checks and balances in government agencies to avoid abuse of power Michael's next with me on coast to coast am. These now on Amazon for a catalog $105.00. You're listening to Coast to coast am. And welcome back to coast to coast George Norry with you Michael Doherty president and c.e.o. Of lab m.d. That's an Atlanta based clinical and. Anatomic medical laboratory with a national client base will talk about that Mike founded lab m.d. In 1906 after 14 years in surgical device sales with the u.s. Surgical Corp and mentor Corp He was born and raised in Detroit Michigan like me he holds a be a new economic from the University of Michigan an arbor resided in Atlanta since 1987 Michael welcome back it's been almost 2 years to the day Wacom it's good to have you back again it's great to be here and what a crazy 2 years of clarity and an answer so I was glad to be here and to a fellow Detroit or I'm glad all is well with you yeah I tried to come back yeah yeah they are and they took a hit but they're coming back and now we'll see how the Tigers do this year to. Now that will be interest and it weighs Michael tell us about Lavin de exactly what is that Ok so lab empty I founded as a urologist only laboratory of it took and specimens from your Rolla just all of the country to test blood urine and tissue for prostate cancer and microorganisms and vector anything and get done a urologist office and we were a small private company with 40 employees and what made as different as they were sewn etched we had to have a top half hour just in the world that had read more prostate cancer tissue than anyone else so the urologist would get such a high level of expertise that they couldn't necessarily get from their hospital across the street and we had software that was very early adopter that organized all the ordering processes and really when you eliminate human interaction with and data you get up much more much lower incidence of error so we had higher accuracy and higher speed for just convenience sake and accuracy sake. And patient outcome benefits by doing all that stuff so that's how we were different so we were small but mighty were you regional or did these samples come in from everywhere they came all over the United States we had we had sailed up to now and Utah and Arizona and all across it for some reason which I want to real figure out if they would take a line from San Luis Obispo and drove across Myrtle Beach we are really strong south of that line that had him all over the place and then what did you continue doing that or have you changed well the company ran out of gas in 2014 because that was about year 6 of fighting the feds and the way the government to the way the government the future and I'm so much clearer on this now because I've got the rearview mirror although I'm still fighting but it's not new to me anymore is that they drain you dry there really isn't when the government comes at you they've got such deep pockets it really is a shakedown It's like the 15th century where they they're going to put your head on a spike and they're going to put it on the bridge and I want the rest of population to see what you allegedly did wrong so they'll be afraid and if your numbers come up and they're not going on your door that might be news to you but that's about the 5th inning for them and their you think they're called flat busted which is why a lot of lawyers shift tell corporate people whether it be small companies or big get up and settle because there's no real justice with this you can't win can you you can't win you just have to decide how you want to die that was really me I mean I knew were going to die the question is am I going to die quietly and smothered so that no one believes me and they think I'm crazy which which I just couldn't handle or they're going to go down fighting and try to turn something positive out of this even though I was going to get nailed and you know I think that is really happening now but there's a lot of terrifying lessons that have been learned you just have to look at it as. Life that venture you can't look at it as when or lose you just have to look at it as live and learn well I'm sure when you wrote to the devil inside the Beltway you did not make them too happy. Now and you know when you do something like write a book once again you know people think you're crazy that well you know because everyone so cynical these days I just got back from London for 2 weeks and I have to say they're not nearly as cynical as we are over here and everyone you know the laziest word is no can't you know and so I wrote it and didn't tell anybody and when it came out never in a 1000000 years did I think it would result in being on your show testifying in front of Congress having congressional investigation having a whistleblower come out having Businessweek write a profile I mean if I would have said that before it happened who would have thought I was an arrogant narcissist and I certainly didn't plan it I just wanted it written at the time and when you write a book it really is a stake in the ground for that time and I'm so different and will have learned so much since I wrote that book I'm working on another one to follow up from what happened because of that book but I'm really glad I wrote it netbook is still very timely because it's just it's it's it's not timely for me because I've lived through it but people mostly have not lived through being attacked by the feds and I just put so much transparency of their letters how they fan cow they strategize it's quite frankly terrifying that this is real and true and then they play this way but it's necessary for us to learn so I'm really glad it was done well in the whistleblower when he stepped forward saved your backside kidney Yes he did we had what after I wrote the book the book came out 13 and then the company closed Jenner 14 and so April 2nd 14 at 730 at night the phone rang and it was this guy saying my name is Richard Wallace and I left the company that took your file yesterday. After I was told I was kept alive by the feds and and he then proceeded to tell me what they did and what they would do for your listeners and I'm telling him tell me how that's right that we learned this in a congressional definition as well but for the sake of time hold on for one second Michael we're at the break and I want to get this full story in in its in its entirety because it's important for everybody to hear it when we back in a moment Michael Doherty with us His book is called The Devil Inside the Beltway and his website is linked up at coast to coast am dot com We will take calls with him next hour about this abuse of power so I'm sure some of you have seen it yourself to find out where George Noory speaking go to the coast to coast am done com website scroll down to the bottom and click George's counter. Now more of this to come. And welcome back Michael Doherty with us as we talk about his work the devil inside the beltway here had a company called Lab and a d.v.d. And all of sudden it was squeezed by the feds and things changed let's talk about the whistleblower and then what happened with the versa what was that whole issue of Michael Ok Well Ok so the whistle blower for the size of this this big this is a guy that worked for the company that called me years before and said. We found $9000.00 of your patients out in cyberspace would you like to hire us we will get rid of it clean up cyberspace and monitors that will never happen again for $475.00 an hour but they wouldn't tell slanting us we paid them so I wrote the book about this because I found out they were working with the federal government when after I wrote the book The government lost their mind if we found what is it what did they mean by we found these 9000 people in cyberspace Well they would not mean anything wouldn't try anything unless you paid him so that was the very question and that was also the big signal like these people are just con men you know there's they're not and I had you know like yours they create an issue to trick you that's exactly right and that turned out less when it's a duck it's a duck it's a duck even I can't see the doc and you know 7 years later we get we got proof that it was a duck but you know when the government is working with them and you say such things as oh the government's working with them people think you've got a metal hat on I wasn't used to that you know I worked in surgery and cancer diagnostics for 30 years I had to trust physicians to assist them and the operating room or the cancer diagnostics I was not used to not being believed and so this was very tough because I felt something really really wrong was going on and I feel responsible to alert people this and what I'm getting is looked at like I'm a problem and when we wouldn't pay him he said he's turning over the feds and the feds start investigating us it's extortion a total extortion exactly and during the time you know my lawyers like oh don't say the word extortion I'm like oh excuse me it is but you know it that's a terrifying lesson you learn as you go through this is like you know the good guys get a lot of guns pointed at them and fired to not be a troublemaker which is shocking when you think you are as. Actually doing good and to have a cancer detection Center attack and without any remorse and then find out the guy's work with the feds it was I had to write about it especially because so much of it was already proven and congressional records because I found this guy that ran this company testifying in front of house oversight and commerce years before so no one could dispute what I said was happening is right there in government records he was under oath so I wrote the book and we found out that the day my off their Web site went up the Federal Trade Commission went out at $75.00 times and within 72 hours announced they were going to sue me and then did sue me 6 weeks later and this is all the hindsight craziness 5 days after that type versus sued me for defamation before I had the book it even come out now back in that time my lawyer said wow that's awfully odd how close they are suing to each other but even when we're looking at it we never thought a 1000000 years oh they're working together Luzhin they were Yeah they knew what the right foot the left hand and everything else was doing at the same time you know why they do it George and when I even I You feel like such an a gullible innocent fool and they do it because these lawyers once they sue you once they see you they have complete immunity so there's no accountability for these guys that's why you see this you know bureaucrat after bureaucrat get in trouble the last 2 years sit in front of Congress with a smirk on their face they know nothing is going to have nothing could happen to them so anyways you get sued. You're in court what happens the whistleblower calls you the whistleblower calls and says this is what we do we've been working with the f.b.i. They don't understand how what we're doing what we're doing we're working and doing legitimate child porn we're. When we're doing that we are taking the metadata and the. IP addresses and then we're using that software and we're not using it with the f.b.i. We're using it to go into corporations like yours and we break in and we take a file and then we change it to make it look like it's out there and then we call the corporations and we say it's out there and you want to why we've got a 1000 guys it's not out there is this we make millions is this company still doing what it's doing yes it's well I would say they're struggling a bit they were raided by the f.b.i. a Little over a year ago and we're just sitting out here like good little boys team they were working night. They were they were lying to every They're working with the f.b.i. They work with Homeland Security they work with Dartmouth they work with the f.t.c. The f.t.c. Was the one that really relied on them I wouldn't say the other agencies really relied on them too much and the f.b.i. Really I think would be smoking hot mad at this you know but the f.t.c. They're the ones with the blood on their hands think the crime let me get this right so they could they crack into or hack into companies into their computer system grab files change them to make it look like they're doing something wrong I assume and then they put the files back loading on the space she's a pepper the file they change the date of the origination data some 7 looking like a can from a company's workflow site make it look like it came from now and I have a theory of their child pornography and and how many companies pay up to get rid of them I don't know yet I know the f.b.i. Has got it now but I know that when the f.t.c. Got and got hooked up with the what type around 2008 and 9 they subpoenaed they worked with with Tiger anti Bursa did not want to cough up the names of the. Companies without some cover so the f.t.c. Permitted and worked with tigers to create a false company called the privacy Institute to funnel the files over and that funneling And you know the f.t.c. Our own government was knowingly sending That's the idea which is. The government version of a very powerful subpoena to a false company a fraud gently built company to funnel files through and they got 86 companies and that time they got Coca-Cola they got k.p. M.j. They got production show. Papa John's my company and they all turned out to be pretty much companies that told them to go pound sand it was basically an enemy's list of time versus But the f.t.c. Was so gullible because here's the kernel to really get this these agencies like the f.t.c. Or the f.c.c. Or the you know some of these groups like that they're filled with lawyers that are bureaucrats that have no experience in what the regulating they just want to notch on their belt and the f.t.c. Has very little technological technological knowledge so they just thought well you're leaking anyway so that's enough for us they never verified anything How did you how did you end up winning because of the whistleblower I ended up winning Well what did I win what were still on of the appeals court so we won the case I had to go on trial and the agencies are allowed to have their own courts that a trial went for well over a year because of the whistleblower and waiting to a criminal matter and all this finally got a ruling in the end of 2015 that completely overturned the f.t.c. But here's the crazy thing that gets everyone scratching their head and confuses the media the Asked see commissioners have more power than their own court judges so after the judge says s.t.c. You're completely wrong this is all. All b.s. Wiping it all out the commissioners political appointees and total soldier Kratz overturned it they can overturn findings of fact so and this is the part that guest understand happens every time you have to go through this house of fire that takes millions and years before you can get to an Article 3 court a court that has no obligation to the agency you have to go through that 1st and almost everyone folds only now after all these years that we start getting into we're in the 11th Circuit and they overt you know they overturned the f.t.c. And put a stay on the case last year and we actually are an oral argument and the 11th Circuit and 3 weeks this is how slow justices and this is the big picture they have lemon unlimited money they're going to put you through the torture chamber guilty or innocent which is why almost everybody rolls you know what honestly I would have rolled so what's the motivation Michael what are they trying to accomplish or they're trying to because Congress has not put out cyber security standards all these agencies are fighting for who's going to be the big cyber police this is all a power grab for power and authority and then the way they do it which is not new it's just a class is a shakedown they intimidate companies are all they get consent decrees from those companies then all the privacy and security people and corporations and and those and histories and all the lawyers go look at the consent to create This is what you're supposed to do if you do this you'll be fine thank you for paying my invoice and then they all make a fortune may I go on the f.t.c. Thanks to the king of the world they're saving the world and as we can see if what really is going on in cybercrime right now they're completely irrelevant and incompetent and they're doing a whole lot of day not do you think you did anything wrong when they came out you. Were they were. So let's go back to these 9000 cyber phony people that are out there in the system that they don't like out there they're not they weren't even there were that was all a lie so that's a lie they make it to look like a lie that's what the whistleblower said and he said under oath those files never left our computer until he took them and they were totally in his possession or the f.t.c. Is possession there is no such thing as our patients ever being out in cyberspace ever That's amazing Now how have things changed. Or they also are they still doing the same thing squeezing companies and I highly doubt it the president is gone the f.b.i. Has raided I know a lot of employees have left I stay on the sidelines while the Department of Justice and the f.b.i. Do their thing it's been a couple years that wasn't this is and yes it has and that's about the speed of justice or. So what have you learned with this process Michael a lot of good things and a lot of bad things you know I will and since you were on with me in June of 20152 years ago what has changed for you in 2 years. Well I've been vindicated I would say that we want in court and business we've had a big profile in May when a large you know major media outfit goes and does an investigative piece where they spend months verifying everything you say and then back oh it's a print that has helped a tremendous amount of credibility because when you are making accusations against the government folks don't want to hear it and they don't want to believe it or they don't know what to do and when it comes from someone else verified that's helped tremendously but I'm also deep in litigation trying to you know defend myself now ropes and gray which is one of the top cyber security firms in the United States if not the world they handled the breach for Sony and Target and Home Depot they have taken out my case pro bono because this case is so impactful to every organization big or small and ited States right now on cyber security because what the Federal Trade Commission is fighting for is what they've always been fighting for which is power and they want to say that if you have data on your workstation that is vulnerable or exposed even if they have not been stolen even if there's not a crime even if there's not of. Dictum you're breaking the law they want that much power you can't have that and so that's why we're probably you know one step away from the Supreme Court but this is this is what people mean when they talk about the administrative state and many agencies this is what people complain about and this did not start with Obama this started a century ago and this is what I've really learned is that we don't know about this as citizens it is not in our civics books it never has been now and therefore the powers they have are dumbfounding to almost every American including many congressmen and lawyers and staffers if you don't really work in ministry of law your brain just can't get around the fact of how much power these people have in so had you written the check whether you could have afforded it or not at the time they would have left you alone no they wouldn't have a hey would have kept going they won once they draw blood they kept going as well I mean if I had written a check. You know I guess I mean well I mean I could I couldn't resist like them because it's like the mob going up the streets up to stores for this protection getting paid every week yeah that's what it is because you keep getting paid I know a couple corporations got really upset with them and when they were paying them and actually want to know called the u.s. Government and you know these guys had General Wesley Clark an advisory board and Howard Smith and Paul Newman So you know the government would get a complaint and then kind of back off because these guys look like boy scouts. And they're ran this company as a masterful utterly masterful criminal mind and I said Tell that to all and he's out that was all right. Oh he's still not arrested he's moved to Florida I think and he's not he purports not to be at that company and he used to call the media all the time circling and confusing everyone on Wall Street Journal the 2nd the f.b.i. Raided his his company poetic the end of any any or any word from him that was that was said and now we're just waiting hoping when it justice on something like that. Yeah but you know the real saying is that I consider him an ancillary player had the government acted responsibly had those lawyers acted with integrity and believe me the Federal Trade Commission lawyers do not have integrity they are out for the kill and war and killing is not integrity and they is a complete story of willful blindness when you and this is why I like I've been on panels with the f.b.i. And the Secret Service and I come from a law enforcement family and I will tell you you just don't not verify evidence before you go after someone especially a company that has diagnosing cancer and has over 700000 patients but the vet organization absolutely to this day has 0 remorse they to me are way more damaging than the entire verse that because they aren't protecting us and that's what were they trying to accuse you of Michael it's called Section 5 of the Federal Trade Commission Act from $114.00 which of course is a law that's completely applicable to their right and that and that law empowers the f.t.c. To protect consumers from unfairness or deceptive acts and so they are saying because my data security practices were not good enough that I was being unfair to consumers the problem is that sounds great on a panel or in the media or. To a congressman but they don't say what you have to do they argue they don't have to tell you what you have to do they don't have standards they don't have rules they don't have noticed and an argument also we argue as a medical a so they were under the umbrella of Health and Human Services which said we did nothing wrong but and this is the other thing big picture there when I do a lot of public speaking I have yet to understand that there are many different agencies and the country and they all have rules and if you follow one but you don't make the other one happy they don't care you may if you may not agree but you gotta make all happy Michael stay with us we're coming back for calls next time coast comes the free Coast zone email newsletter is sent out 6 days a week and is a great way to keep up on all things coast with detailed program recaps the fascinating today and strangeness listings upcoming guest info and weekly free audio clips it's a must have for Coast fans look for the free sign up on the coast to coast am dot com home page.
