This is the first christmas for the new pope. Uhhuh. Hes a gift. He is a gift to the world. And he is everything that i had hoped he could be and i think the college of cardinals hoped he would be. A week or so ago when Time Magazine named him the person of the year, nobrainer. I was picking that up on the sidewalks of new york. You have felt that excitement. You said a nobrainer. Could you have really have seen the kind of impact this man would have . No. I think nothing he does has surprised us. What has surprised us is he has done it more effectively than we thought. What we were after, as you and i chatted in rome, a good pastor with a track record of solid administration, the fatherly warm tender for the sheep, for his people. And we got that on steroids with pope francis. Hes the worlds parish priest. They used to call him father george. And the world is calling him father francis. Hes our francis. And hes just a great, loving parish priest. I loved his reaction to being named times person of the year. Im not looking for fame or celebrity or more power. But if it can spread you got it. If it can be a vehicle. Time magazine, im more worried about timeless things. He shrugs and says, thanks. Who cares . Im not looking for this. But if it helps people meet jesus, bring it on. And he seems to want to rebalance in ways. He holds to the Church Doctrine on things like abortion and gay marriage. But he says also, lets not just talk about this. You know what . I think on this Christmas Morning, its good, the image john 23rd used. The italians say francis reminds them of pope john the 23rd. He said, the teaching of the church is a timeless gift. Its ours. We inherit it. But the way we gift wrap it, the way we make it more compelling to the world, that can always change. Thats what francis is saying. Im not changing the teaching. I might change the way we teach it. And part of that, and the way that this gospel is taught, could involve a greater role or a different role, enhanced role for women in the church. Hes talking about that. He reminds us, hes once again a loyal son of the church. He said, women cannot be ordained priests. But he said the Second Council taught us you dont need a collar to have a leadership role in the church. And the way the church has given women leadership. University president s. Ceos of hospitals. Most important people in parish is women, for centuries in the Catholic Church in the United States. Hes reminded that we have a pretty good record. But he said, we need to do better. I would think that in this new year, were probably going to see some women get some major positions within the holy see, the Catholic Church. I would anticipate that. Christmas today. Probably the most hopeful day of the year. What do you hope for in the coming year . Well, look. Its just like, what id love to see is that we continue to welcome the baby. Christmas is all about kids. Christmas is all about babies. And we are at our best when we tenderly love our kids. So, whether that be education. Whether that be health care. Momma, what do you want . She says, make me a memory. You want to be making memories. Thats what were doing today. Thats so important. We do get caught up, did i get the perfect gifts . I think most of us, when we look back, we dont necessarily remember the gifts. We remember that time that we laughed together and played with our cousins. We let our guard down a little bit. Talk about the role of faith today. We talk about family. We talk about memories. But the importance of this day. You know, i think, obviously, as believers, as christians, the birth of christ, celebrating what jesus did, coming to earth, giving us salvation and redemption, thats the ultimate gift. I think also, it teaches us to let today be a new beginning. Also a day like today, not a happy day for a lot of people. Theyve lost loved ones. The second one without my mother. The first one that i can really last year i wasnt doing so well. And how do you talk to people . And what do you say to those who are struggling . They see the happiness and you want to be happy for other people. But it is a time of reflection for many. It really is. Its a difficult time. We realize people have lost loved ones. And some people dont have family around. So, its important to got to remember, number one, your loved ones are with the lord. And as you draw closer to god and have faith, you can draw closer to your loved one. The other thing, too, is dont sit around all day and feel sorry for yourself. Go out and do something good for somebody else. Do you have a neighbor that you can go cheer up . I find when you give, it brings healing and wholeness to yourself. I know that you have a special message for billy graham, who is having some health issues. Dr. Graham has always been a hero of mine. Growing up as a preachers kid, we always watched him. So admired and respected him. I got a chance to visit with him some. Just as his health declined, your heart goes out for him. As we look ahead, what is your message of peace for the new year, joel . My message of peace is, again, to let go of the old. Find something to be grateful for each day. See it as a gift, each day thats gods given us. And really believe for bigger things for your life. How do we keep this going . After christmas and after the new year, how do we keep the spirit of christmas alive all year round . Thats so important. It should be an everyday thing. And one thing i try to learn and teach others is, get up every day and not necessarily thinking about how i can get blessed. But how can i be a blessing to somebody else . All these people complain when they go up early. To me, its i like it. Im good with november. Day after thanksgiving is great. Is that when they go up at your house . We dont always make it. In l. A. , in a department store, on my birthday, which i know you know, september 18th. Somebody who says january 1st. I like a week later. I do, too. I like to keep it later. Im late getting them up. Theyre falling down. The 12 days of christmas. I like all of that. When santas growing beard. What are the rules for regifting . I think regifting is great. Id like some disclosure, though. If youre going to regift be honest. Be honest about it. And say, you know what . By the way, i got this as a gift. Look, i no. Plausible deniability. You might get caught. There might be that little thing that leads you to get caught. I have a personal story with this. Yeah. Thats it. Youre not even going to take the time to comb through it to make sure yeah. At that point, if somebody gave you a fantastic bottle of wine. But you had one and you wanted to give it to a friend wine, i dont know. The rules on wine may be a little different. No disclosure on wine. No disclosure on wine. Okay. How long should relatives stay for the holidays . Never. Three days. Three days i think is fine. Then, its like you mean three days after christmas . No. Three total. And then, you start charging. Tough girl. How do you get them out, though, after three nights . Whats the key phrase that says, you know im thinking maybe you work that outside already. Change the locks. I dont know. You can stay as long as you want. It depends on who it is. Right. Over the holidays is tough. I think over the holidays, especially if they come a long way. It is, once again, a time for us to thank the servicemen and women who defend our freedoms and are away from their families this holiday season. Earlier this year, then, i was lucky enough and humbled to spend some time with families separated by war and then brought back together, through these incredible reunions that were seeing here. And we got a chance to catch up with all of them, yet again, for this very special holiday. They are as heartwarming as they are patriotic. Please welcome home reporter and whether theyre planned. Or a total surprise. Are you freaking kidding me . Mrs. Bronson, reporting for duty. Reporter they get me every, single time. Hi, baby. Mommy. Reporter military homecomings. Troops reunited with loved ones after months deployed at war. Daddy. Reporter today, in a matter of hours, three families are about to experience that singular joy. But to fully appreciate the sacrifice involved here, we wanted to trace back this moment, from both sides. In the weeks prior, we met with three families. Then, we went to afghanistan. To meet their partners. Jennifer stewarts husband, major michael stewart, is stationed in ghazni, afghanistan. At home, she runs a ship, and a tight one. With two kids. 2yearold patrick, 6yearold izzy. There will be a weight that is just gone. Reporter do you let yourself think about that moment . Oh, gosh, yeah. Im more excited about him coming home than i was about the day that we got married. Reporter jesse and her husband, michael, a specialist in the army, had a baby boy, brantley, last december. Michael deployed to afghanistan just two weeks later. And thats army captain william lott, number 69, then at west point. He deployed with wife, brittany, was 15 weeks pregnant, knowing he would miss the birth of their first child. Daughter, finley, was born in july. Thats going to be one of the best moments, in life. Hes coming home. And hell be safe. Reporter and while their soldiers are on the front lines of war, the void can be exhausting and painful. No one is there to break up your day or your weekends. You know, going to church by yourself. Just you think about them a lot. Reporter what are you looking forward to most about being able to say to him in person . I cant wait to tell him how absolutely certain and unquestionably thankful i am to have found the person that i am supposed to be with. Reporter you were saying as far as comfort goes, this is sort of top of the line . Yeah. Reporter specialist fuller and captain lott are in harms way every day, clearing ieds from afghanistans most dangerous roads. How long do you pray for his safety . Every day. I pray for him every day. I assume that something happens every day. The gunners have to be scanning their sectors. Reporter do you think about the danger youre in every day . Anywhere you go in afghanistan, theres people trying to kill you. It hits home. I saw a body of a captain. I was a captain at the time. I looked down and said, that guy could have been me. Reporter what is it like to have a normal way of life right outside the door . Its your protection. You have to trust it. Reporter knowing you werent going to be there for the birth, what was that like . Pretty hard. I mean, you cant you only have the birth of your first child once. Reporter so, i figured it my duty to bring a little surprise message from back home. Hi, sweetheart. Were so excited to get you home. Were counting down the hours. I love you. Reporter how was that . Thats good. I cant wait to be home. Reporter today is major Mike Stewarts 37th birthday. And i have a gift from his daughter, izzy. Hi, daddy. I love you. See you soon, honey. Shes an amazing woman. This french toast, we are ready to go. All right. Here we go. Were going to start with the strawberry sauce first. We have strawberries in a sauce pan, josh. A little nutmeg. Yeah. And cinnamon. You can hand me that sugar right there. Cinnamon, sugar. And a little h20. And light corn syrup. Thats good. And in it goes. A little spatula right there, if you need it. Medium heat. And its just going to start bubbles and simmering. Nothing crazy. Okay . You can use any fruit you want. How long did you maybe 10 to 15 minutes. Okay. Now, the french toast itself, we have eggs. You can whisk that for me. Robin . Whisker . I love whisking. Robins the whisker. A little vanilla. Right in the eggs . Right in the eggs. The vanilla. And here it comes. A little milk. Yes. Oh. You can that vanilla, really yes. A little sugar. You want it to dissolve. And then, cocoa powder. Thats whats going to make it the chocolate. Yeah. Once that gets all incorporated, what were going to do is take whatever french bread, italian bread, portuguese bread, whatever you have. Once robin has that whisked, were going to soak a few pieces like this. How long . Let it really absorb. Thats the key to them. As robin just said, thats the key to a great french toast. Let them get wet. Once they get wet, we go inside the skillet, with a little butter. And away we go. Nice and hot, the skillet . Yeah. Not too hot. What happens now, is this. Once the french toast is done so, well give ill take some. George . Thank you. And looks good. Okay. Just a couple things we could do. Lara. Thank you. Thanks, em. Theres a couple of things we could do. We could use a little powdered sugar. And sprinkle a little powdered sugar on it. We can do the strawberry sauce that we heated on that. So, we got a little strawberry sauce. And or we could also, on the pancakes lara, would you drizzle that on the pancakes for me . The gingerbread pancakes. Gingerbread. We made gingerbread batter. You beat it up. You can make it the day before. And basically, from that point on, you bring it up, let it come up to temperature. And do it with a little ladle, in a nonstick skillet. Gingerbread pancakes. A little syrup and butter. If you want to go savory with the waffles. You can go a different direction. We have the chocolate french toast with the strawberry sauce. We have the gingerbread pancakes with butter and syrup. Or you can do ham and cheese waffles. Oh. So, we could go with savory. Go savory, right . Instead of the breakfast casserole . You know, thats great. We have a recipe for that, as well. Thats a great idea. But ham and cheese waffles. Little pieces of ham and cheese.
