The troubling surge in cases of the coronavirus here in the u. S. , what dr. Fauci said just today. But we begin tonight with breaking news from nascar just moments ago, saying the fbi investigation into the noose found in the garage of nascar driver Bubba Wallace was no crime, they say. Saying the garage door pull rope fashioned like a noose had been there since as early as last fall, saying, quote, we are thankful to learn that this was not an intentional racist act against bubba. There had been a lot of concern over that discovery, because Bubba Wallace had urged nascar to ban Confederate Flags at all events after the nationwide protests for racial equality, and nascar did just that. And still, outside the speedway this weekend, this parade of cars driving by, waving Confederate Flags. We all witnessed that powerful show of support for wallace before yesterdays race. Drivers and crew escorting him and his car to the starting line. Nascar tonight saying, we remain steadfast in our commitment to provide a welcoming and inclusive environment for all who love racing. Abcs Victor Oquendo leads us off tonight from florida. Hes the circuits only fulltime black driver. A member of his team found the rope hanging sunday at talladega. An area restricted to only essential personnel, nascar stepping up security for wallace. The fbi reviewing evidence, finding, the noose was in that garage as early as october 2019. Adding, nobody could have known mr. Wallace would be assigned to garage number four last week. What appeared to be a hatefueled act led to an incredible show of solidarity. Before the race monday, drivers and pit crews from every team marching along with wallaces number 43 car. Wallace clearly emotional. Its been about two weeks since wallace pushed nascar to ban the Confederate Flag from all races and events. Something brad daugherty, one of nascars few black team owners, says signals a new age for the sport. If youre not apart of this movement, youre going to be left in the wake. And nascar has taken a huge stance on changing a lot of things, the perception of nascar over the last, you know, five decades and how people view the sport, what they think of the sport. This is unprecedented and this is huge. Reporter and while theres been an outpouring of support, theres also been opposition. Confederate flags spotted outside the super speedway and even one flying above with the words reading, defund nascar. Today on the view, wallace said he never imagined being an activist, but recent events led him to speak out. Racism is a problem from every aspect of life and we have to work so hard to get that to change and we know its not going to change overnight. Reporter a sign of that change . These new fans after the race. All of them wearing black lives matter tshirts. First timers right here from atlanta. That is so cool. The sport is changing. So, lets bring in Victor Oquendo with us tonight from miami. Victor, this announcement just before we came on the air tonight. Anymore reaction from nascar and from Bubba Wallaces team tonight . Reporter well, david, tonight, a member of Bubba Wallaces team tweeted theyre relieved that this was a, quote, huge misunderstanding. Remember, Bubba Wallace never saw it himself. Nascar saying they will continue to investigate to see why that rope was fashioned like a noose, but they are relieved and thankful to learn that this does not appear to be an intentional racist act against wallace. David . Victor oquendo leading us off tonight. Victor, thank you. Of course, the other major story were following tonight, the alarming surge in cases of coronavirus. New records set s,alora d izon dr. Anthony fauci today calling it a disturbing surge in infections, warning the next few weeks will be critical. Hospitalizations are up in 21 states. Texas, for example, with more than 5,000 cases in just the past 24 hours. Texas Childrens Hospital now prepared to take in Adult Patients. California with the highest daily increase ever, more than 5,000 new cases there. And florida tonight with more than 3,000 new cases, two more counties now voting to require masks. And in arizona, where the president is tonight, a 20 increase in hospitalizations setting new records in cases and in deaths. As thousands now prepare to gather to hear the president. Many in line, many with no masks. And they explain why right here tonight. Abcs matt gutman now from arizona. Reporter dr. Anthony fauci, today with a stark warning about the coronavirus. Right now, the next couple of weeks are going to be critical in our ability to address those surgings that we are seeing in florida, in texas, in arizona and in other states. Reporter the images painfully familiar. Doctors and nurses overwhelmed with Covid Patients. This time across the sunbelt. In 21 states, hospitalizations are surging. And in 23 states, the rate of those testing positive is increasing. A sign theres more covid in the community. We are now seeing a disturbing surge of infections that looks like its a combination, but one of the things is, an increase in community spread. And thats something that im really quite concerned about. Reporter texas today hitting a record, nearly 5,50 cases. Childrens hospital in houston now taking Adult Patients to free up beds in other hospitals. And the governor, who early on resisted issuing a stay at home order, now telling kbtxtv, texans should stay home when possible. The safest place for you is at your home. Reporter today in phoenix, throngs of people, including 3,000 students, packing into this megachurch to see the president. Just a fraction of those lining up outside wearing masks. If a person feels like they dont need to wear a mask, i dont think they should be forced to wear a mask. Reporter dr. Sam durrani told us his Hospital System saw a record rise in Covid Patients just over the past 24 hours. Were talking about 10 increases per day, you know reporter per day . 10 , 20 increases in hospital admissions. Eporter so mean for hospitals like yours . Youre going to get to the point where we have overflow, especially in the icu. Reporter he called todays rally a superspreader event. But mass gathering at this time is not safe. Reporter of any kind . Of any kind. Reporter in yuma, arizona, Covid Patients being airlifted to other hospitals for acute care. And in yakima, washington, hospitals transferring patients also, and running short on staff. Doctors juggling emergencies. We have the difficult choice of, do we send someone away for eight hours to go across the mountains and back, and that means one less ambulance thats available for a car accident . Reporter and across the country, cases are surging in places like myrtle beach, south carolina, where the virus is on the move. 14 students from ohio testing positive after a trip there. Another 30 visitors diagnosed after returning to west virginia. And back in phoenix, despite the warnings, defiance about mask wearing. I dont wear a mask even though i have my immune system is a little compromised, because im a Breast Cancer survivor. Reporter and david, the heads of Covid Response here in arizona tell us they are at a tipping point. Theyre considering canceling elective surgeries. They are already bringing in nurses from out of state. And they say the rally with thousands of people in there is certainly going to have a negative impact and increase covid cases here in about a week or two. David . All right, matt gutman tonight. Thank you, matt. This evening, dr. Anthony fauci and others were pressed, did the president tell them to slow down testing, after the president suggested the slowdown during a rally. Dr. Faucis answer, and the president today saying, i dont kid. Heres mary bruce. Reporter as President Trump left washington to speak to thousands of supporters in arizona, on capitol hill, his top Health Adviser told lawmakers, these rallies are a mistake. You should not congregate in crowds. You should keep distance. If you do, please wear a mask. So, plan a, dont go in a crowd. Plan b, if you do, make sure you wear a mask. Reporter but at todays students for trump rally, that advice went unheeded. No social distancing. And with few exceptions, no masks. The president is staking his reelection on showing that the virus is under control. But now, hes on defense, after saying he ordered his team to slow down testing. When you do testing to that extent, youre going to find more people, youre going to find more cases. So, i said to my people, slow the testing down, please. Reporter his aides insisted the president was just kidding. But this morning, trump said, no, he wasnt. I dont kid. Let me just tell you, let me make it clear. Heres what i say testing is a doubleedged sword. Reporter but before congress, members of Trumps Coronavirus Task force contradicted him. Has President Trump ever directed you to slow down testing for covid19 in the United States . Dr. Redfield . No. No, sir. No, congressman. Reporter dr. Anthony fauci and cdc director Robert Redfield were blunt. None of us have ever been told to slow down on testing. That just is a fact. In fact, we will be doing more testing. All of us have been and continue to be committed to increasing readily, timely access to testing. Reporter fauci says he hasnt spoken to the president in weeks. And trump, while focused on testing, hasnt mentioned the increasing hospitalization rates in states like arizona. Tonight, joe biden seizing on the president s words, tweeting, its pretty simple, if we want to save peoples jobs and save peoples lives, we need more testing. And we need it faster. Donald trump has made it clear that this is all about him. Theres nothing to do with anyone else. Its about him. Everything is in the context of him. Reporter and tonight, former president obama making his first appearance at that biden fundraiser. More than 175,000 people signing up for that virtual event, raising more than 7. 6 million. The former president slammed trumps handling of the pandemic and these big Campaign Events that hes been holding, saying, unlike our current president , we recognize that we have a Public Health crisis going on and it means we have to show restraint in how we structure campaigning. David . All right, mary bruce, live at the white house. Mary, thank you. And one more note on the coronavirus tonight, because so many of you at home still have questions, among them, what happened to hope that perhaps the summer months with the heat would help bring a showdown . So, lets bring our chief medical editor dr. Jen ashton, back with us tonight. And jen, first off, the seriousness of this moment. I know you were listening to dr. Fauci today, saying the next few weeks are critical. And you told us that is absolutely the case. Exactly, david. Many hospitals activating their Surge Capacity plans. Doctors on the front lines getting concerned. And let me tell you why. We have to remember, theres a lag time between exposure to this virus, when people get sick, confirmed cases, then hospitalizations and possible deaths. So, the next several weeks are critical. And jen, you and i were talking, theres still so much we dont know about this, but many hoped the heat, the summer might help slow down the virus but yet look at what were seeing. Exactly. This virus has proven it transmits very readily in the winter as well as the summer, with the sunbelt, temperatures in many cases exceeding 100 degrees. Certainly at this time, appearing to refute that theory that the warm weather will slow this virus. All right, jen ashton with us every step of the way. Thank you, jen.
