Of what the city wants to see. Other activities include block parties, movie nights, pop up shops and dance or exercise events. We have the Oakland Museum celebrating tilly summerfield hosted a dance battle in february for black History Month through a similar type of program, i was able to pay all the dancers. I was able to give away merch from the black panthers. I was able to, like, really give back in a tangible way. And so through these opportunities, we are able to activate the space in a way thats it. That gives the power back to the people. The city says, activate oakland also has an equity component to make sure events are held across the city. Weve been really intentional of making sure that these dollars are going to communities that have not received them before because all of our all parts of oakland are beautiful and we need to make sure we amplify that. The application process is now open. The deadline to apply is october 12th. The event must take place between the end of october and august of next year in oakland. Anson hassan, abc seven news. Well, San Francisco put its best foot forward for the mega tech conference dreamforce. So now the question is if the city can transform for visitors, why cant it be like this every day . Abc7 News Reporter suzannephan took the question to mayor london breed to get her reaction. Suzanne so kristin, mayor breed pushed back. She said the city did not go through a major transformation just for dreamforce. She says San Francisco is cleaned up for every Single Convention and overall things are getting better. Its the final day of dreamforce, socalled trailblazers are still trying to get as much as possible out of their experian bounce. A lot of i talk. I think that was the word of the day. Its been absolutely epic. Great event, less than 24 hours earlier, salesforce Ceo Marc Benioff sat down with governor gavin newsom to talk about what hes seeing in San Francisco. This is probably the cleanest ive ever seen San Francisco. Its amazing how clean the streets are. Listen to this. Why can San Francisco not be like this every single day . The governor replied that it is possible. He said its up to the city of San Francisco and its leaders. We asked mayor london breed to respond to that and benioffs claim that dreamforce s made the citys transformation possible. Its not just because of dreamforce. There are other conventions. This is what we do for every convention that comes to San Francisco, breed says conventions are key to the citys economic recovery, and she claims things have improved. So my push back is, you know, that San Francisco is changing, things are getting better. The mayor admits that the city still sees challenges in the tenderloin and south of market. Part of what i am doing is not pointing the finger at anyone but rolling up my sleeves to take full responsibility and do everything we can to address those issues. Issues like drug use, homeless and crime. And we are seeing some impacts, especially with daytime open air drug dealing, using and other issues. But we are aggressively doing everything we can. And i think over time were going to see some significant improvements in fact, i feel like theyre already happening back to dreamforce. I think San Francisco looks great. Yoshinori and megan aguayo live and work in San Francisco and attended this years dreamforce. They noticed a big difference in and around moscone center. Yeah, i think they did a good job cleaning up for dreamforce hjorths to be honest, i think people would like to exaggerate how bad San Francisco has gotten. Dreamforce attendees from all across the globe have had varying impressions of San Francisco. I heard things, but it was everything was fine. It is sad to see some of the things that are happening in the city, but you know, this is kind of like i think its just having everywhere. Mayor breed says Jpmorgan Chase hosted its convention in San Francisco and wrote about its incredible experiences in the city. Breed also says many other companies have signed on to hold their convention in San Francisco in the coming years. Live in the newsroom, suzannephan. Abc news. Suzanne, thank you. New developments now on californias plan to fight organized retail crime. Today, the board of state and Community Corrections officials approved a plan to send millions in grant money to 55 cities and counties all across the state. Now, fresno is getting the most with more than 23 million going to its Police Department here in the bay area. The biggest chunk is going to San Francisco 17. 3 million in state funds. The majority of that money, 15. 3 million to be exact, will go to the citys Police Department. That will be used to hire more officers and boost Crime Prevention efforts. The rest is going to san franscs district attorneys office. The other bay area district attorneyces each getting 2 million apiece. Those offices are in alameda, santa clara and sonoma counties and three other local Law Enforcement agencies are getting money as well. 15 million to the San Mateo CountySheriffs Office. 11 million to the Santa Clara CountySheriffs Office and 8 million to the san jose Police Department. New developments with a water main break that opened up a massive sinkhole in the middle of San Franciscos cow hollow neighborhood. The city now says it will take up to six weeks to repair everything. The hole opened up late sunday at the intersection of fillmore and green streets, while the broken pipe is fixed and inspection has shown there are all sorts of other problems that need to be dealt with. Crews also need to replace sewer and gas pipelines. Part of our Mission Every day here at abc7 is to highlight the efforts to build a better bay area. And today San Francisco literally did that mayor london breed signing a new law to speed up housing projects. This will unlock funds make it easier to get these projects approved and then Start Construction much faster. The mayor says there is still a lot of work to be done here. This is a very, very important first step. We know we have to do so much more. No, it is not everything. We need to do to get to the 82,000 units that San Francisco needs to build in order to fulfill our commitment to the housing element. But its an incredible start. Todays signing took place in a market on third street thats going to be turned into hundreds of units of new housing. San jose mayor matt mehan says painful cuts could be coming after the city approved new contracts for its workers earlier this week. We are already making modest cuts this year, but its really the projections next year and the year after where our Budget Office tells us we will likely need to cut 20 million in ongoing spending. Thats going to be painful. And sadly, it will disproportionately impact our most vulnerable residents unless we get very lucky and have higher than expected tax revenue. So mayhem was the only person who voted no. All the other City Council Members voted yes. And that agreement is with two unions representing 4500 workers to pay for their raises. San jose is looking to cut School Crossing guards and may reduce the number of days for the bike and pedestrian friendly viva cal mayor mehan says san joses parks and Rec Department is looking to outside fundraising to keep viva cal going. One of a kind pet is up for adoption on the peninsula. Meat wingo star, an adult domesticated peacock. A few weeks ago, he was running around a School Parking lot in east palo alto. Rescuers captured him. Vets examined him, and he was given a clean bill of health. An ideal situation is that hes in a relatively predator proof environment that can protect him, but he has places where he can jump up to and maybe fly, you know, because theyll fly to like low branches and things. You know, perhaps if theres like a tree or even like a house tree or Something Like that. The Peninsula Humane Society is only looking to adopt wingo star to somebody whos an experienced bird owner. Its also important to know what kind of food peacocks eat like chicken feed nuts, vegetables and fruit. His adoption fee is just 20 bucks. You might want to check with where you live, though, to see if thats are they allowed everywhere . Canaries are really. I dont think its like the canaries. I dont dont know. I guess you can. They say you can domesticate a peacock, but mostly what they do is they come into your yard and eat your flowers and then fly away. So its an acquired taste, lets just put it that way. And theyre so proud about it, you know what i mean . Theyre beautiful when they unfurl the feathers. Yeah, for sure. I dont know. Need to ruffle your feathers over the weather forecast. The clock is ticking down to a potential strike by the almost 150,000 member United Auto Workers union. That could have a major impact on the us economy. For the first time in our history. We may strike all three of the big three at once. The unions president announcing plans to strike with no deal in sight, despite weeks of negotiations with the big three us carmakers ford, gm and chrysler owner stellantis. According to nasa. But it itll take a lot to find it. Today, nasa released a report after a year long study into unidentified flying objects. Reporter rob hayes from our sister station in la has a look at that report. Uap is the new stand in for ufo. It means unidentified anomalous phenomena. Oh, my gosh. Youre all going against the wind. The wind. Bill nelson is the head of nasa today talking about its year long independent report on uap is one that is more down to earth than other alien reports. The nasa independent study team did not find any evidence that uap have an extraterrestrial origin. But we dont know what these uap are. 33 pages long. Put together by scientists and experts poring over encounters like this from military and commercial pilots. Meanwhile, reports of alien life continue to make headlines around the world, like these socalled nonhumans rolled out before Mexicos Congress earlier this week. And in july, a former Us Navy Pilot telling the House Oversight committee about his run in with a uap off the coast of san diego. Look at the fly, the technology that we faced was far superior than anything that we had. But because the mysterious flying objects are still a mystery, nasa will continue investigating them and has appointed a director of uap research, which nasa says the upgraded efforts will work hand in hand with other Government Agencies and use ai to search the skies for even more evidence. Rob hayes, abc seven news. Yeah, you think theyre out there i to the rescue or are they out there. I think some intelligent life form is out there in this vast universe somewhere. I would hope more intelligent than us at this point. A lot more. There are stars and then there are super stars. Astrophysicist Neil Degrasse tyson spoke with our to tumor today on our new streaming newscast abc7 seven at seven. I think i got an extra seven in there, but you know thats fine. Anyway, alien would have gotten you right. Yeah, youre right. Smarter aliens need to do the news anyway. Hes got a new book. Its called to infinity and beyond. Its a journey of cosmic discovery. The goal of the book, which is an extension of my podcast, the startalk podcast has three strands of dna. Theres the science. Then theres pop culture, and then theres humor. And what we found is that when we stitch those together people and deliver the science, that way people come back for more, more. And that was such a successful experiment that we created an entire book showing the journey of us humans on earths surface, looking up, not only wondering whats there , but saying, can we get there . Like, how would you get to the moon if you didnt have rockets . Or maybe you have a balloon . Well, a balloon gets you to the moon. So. So these dreams, however impossible they may have sounded at the time, would some would have to wait for science and technology and. But is it waiting or is it pulling the science and Technology Behind it . And so this is this is an exploration of this spirit journey of the human quest to leave earth. Now, personally, i happen to like earth, so im not one of those who wants to just escape. But throughout theres scenery, right . Theres a topic that we saw covered in a in a movie. And ill talk about how they did in the movie. Did they do it right . Did they do it wrong . Could they have done it better . And thats the pop culture dimension that guides you along, keeping your interest. Can you share maybe 1 or 2 things that you found just so fascinate while writing this . Oh yeah, just the two way to connect things back to you. Just for example, if we talk about living on planets on earth, were earthlings, right . And if youre on mars, youre a martian. If youre on venus, you know, youd say youre a venusian. But the actual way to turn venus into being a venus is thats not the right word. The correct word of being a venus is venereal. Okay the problem is, neil, the medical doctors got to that word before we did because venus is the goddess of love and beauty and all that goes with that right . Yeah. So . So so, so these are little tidbit. Theyre like biscuits that you taste along the way. They just to see what these fits and starts have been in. In our attempt to understand the universe. And then ill talk about some stuff when we talk about the density of things. I said, well, wait a minute. The hulk starts out as david banner and then he just he expands out to become the hulk. And is it the same mass as david banner . If so, then hes really low density. Hed be like a beach ball and you could just flick him and hed bounce down the street, but probably he has mass. So where did he get the mass from . All right. These are questions you can ask and bring to bear on our pop culture stories. And but the biggest question about the hulk is how come his pants still fit . Thats i was going to say, thats the one i never understood that. I need to know the answer to that question. I mean, the hulk storyline would be completely different if you could just bounce him away like a beach ball. That would just be completely different movie. The breeze kicks up. Yeah, some fans, you know. And theres the hulk floating. Yeah. Hulk does not do beach well. Hes like, i got us away from the coast. Thats not great. How much do we still just not know about the universe . Us . Yeah. So so you might have heard of dark matter and dark energy. Dark matter. We can measure it. Its 85 of the gravity of the universe, and we dont know whats causing it. Its not black holes or dark star. Its. We dont know it is not any of what is familiar to us. Its a mystery. Dark energy, this mysterious pressure in the vacuum of space, forcing the universe to accelerate in its expansion. We dont know whats causing that either. If you add those up, its 96 of what is driving the universe. So we know enough about the universe to quantify our ignorance and everything you know and love the laws of physics, chemistry, biology. We are in 4 of what is driving the cosmos. That that is in incredible. We know so little. We know so little. Its humbling. Yes it really is. But i find it exciting. Some people are terrified and they got to have an answer. When i was a kid, nine years old, my first night sky was my local planetarium. I grew up in new york city where there is no night sky. So you have to fake it with a planetarium. But that was my first night sky. What attracted me was not how much we knew, but how much we didnt yet know. And as a scientist, you have to at some point learn to love the questions themselves. Yeah, because that is your driving force, right . And hes right. The more you know, the more you realize how little you know. Neil degrasse tysons. Believe me, i know all it. All i know Neil Degrasse tysons book, to infinity and beyond is available now because you remind me every day whats in a name. I gotta good feeling about this, yeah. And fall in love with yo im with it r again. I gotta good feeling about this yeah, so lets get it im feeling good vibes most americans dont know that cal and uc berkeley are one and the same. And what the heck . Whoa oh, sorry. Go on. Its my read. And this is hurting the university alma mater. I know academically and athletically. So to remedy this for you, kristen, they are recommending athletics should be branded as cal berkeley and academics should be referred to as just berkeley. And i will just say before you jump in on this, virtually every person i know involved with cal athletics thinks this is a terrible idea. Everybody else go first because i dont want to usurp all the time. No, i want to hear what you have to say. Kristin i mean, that is your alma mater, so go for it. Go for it. Im giving you my time. No okay. I just think. No, we all know its cal when youre at the football game. Basketball game, youre not going to go. Yay, go. Cal berkeley. Its cal and we all know berkeleys reputation internationally. Its berkeley. So i never knew there was a problem. Are we trying to solve a problem that doesnt really exist . I mean, whos correct . Are you see, and heres the problem connected to the problem that doesnt exist. Youre spending a lot of time and energy on something thats largely irrelevant when you should have been spending time on making sure that your Football Team and all your other sports teams were in a conference thats not across the country. I know you were all asleep at the wheel at cal, and thats why your cal and thats the problem. Dude, you didnt have to get that personal. Sorry. Im just telling it like it is. Thats why. Thats why theyre in the acc numbers. But i do feel bad for the athletes who have to fly. All yeah, i did. Yeah. Okay, larry now to a terrifying swim, right . Yeah. This is this is bad. A group of kids swimming at huntsville state park. They had an unwelcome visitor, to say the least. Thats an alligator right there. You see, he got running into the water to pull the screaming kids to safety. Luckily, nobody was hurt. There are signs around the lake warning of alligators they rarely chase people, but rarely is not that comforting. Sandy, when the one time hes in the water, hes chasing you. Yeah, exactly. Especially when the kids are so young and theyre just having a good time and all of a sudden, here comes that alligator that is terrifying. You know, the saying, youre either a gator or a gator bait. Youve heard that. Yes its a reference to florida football, but at least nobody was hurt, karina. Right. I mean, thats the most important thing. Yeah, nobody was hurt. That was fine. But i dont know if im seeing signs that say that there are alligators here. I just i wouldnt go in. But i know you cant do that, especially if you live in florida or, you know, places with alligators. I mean, im surprised we dont see videos like that more in some of those states. You know. All right. It seems after work, happy hours are becoming a thing of the past. A report in the wall street journal finds the new attitude is five and one and im done. Experts find out, what time are you off . 501. Im done. Experts find after an initial burst of postpandemic happy hours, most us workers are now opting to clock out and head home. More people are trying to draw better boundaries between work and their lives outside of it. Yeah. What do you guys think . Im not sure. I believe that. I just know, lets say younger people, especially the tech community. Yeah, they are. Theyre still going out. Theyre still enjoying. Well, it depends. If theyre all in the office, its so much easier for if youre all in the office and then at 5 00 youre like, hey, lets go get a drink or happy hour somewhere. If everyones working from home, everybody lives in different places, youre not going to, you know, try to find a meeting spot. Its just easier to go after work if youre already at work. Right . And part of the question here, i think, is, does everybody stop working at 5 00 sharp . I think not. I mean, i could be wrong, but i think a lot of people with the pandemic, everything, you just kind of work a little here, work a little there. And its kind of, you know, as opposed to following the clock, you know, plus the commute time. I think the commute times have grown, you know, bigger and bigger. And so i think maybe people are just anxious to get home. Yeah. Okay. You guys. Glad we saved time for this. Forget drinks. How about dinner . Because its tasty. Thursday. And today were introducing you to mama. Who . Or mama who . Who . I guess a fast casual Chinese Restaurant cofounded by james beard, Award Winning chef brandon zhou, who is amazing. They have some standards like sweet and sour chicken, but also chicken sandwiches and even soft serve. And joining us now is founder and maos son. Thanks so much for joining us. We have a veritable feast here and kristin is educating me about all of the different dishes. But i mean, this is like orange chicken. I assume. Hi. Yeah, that you have. There is our sweet sour chicken. Oh, okay. All right. Im going to take is going to do the taste test here because im the official abc7 taste tester. Well shes chewing. Tell us the origin of the name because in chinese christian was telling me the name can mean a lot of Different Things and im just going to put it that way. Yeah, the, the name is a, a, a proverb in chinese and it started out because our original menu actually was based on this idea around creating something that is sort of a, a tongue in cheek take on what it means to be not so perfect in this kind of food world where a lot of things are taken as something that, you know, you strive to be really excellent. And its sort of like a selfdeprecating joke that we have in the beginning that sort of stuck. And its one of those words in chinese and mandarin that a lot of folks kind of learn in the very beginning, and they sort of sticks in your mind. And so thats sort of the origin of the name. And we can i just say, i tasted it. Its so crispy and the flavor is just right. Theres nothing mama juju about it. Okay but tell us about it, because i know you have brick and mortar restaurants in addition to, you know, kind of prepackaged frozen things. You can buy. Yeah. So we just actually launched these new plastic birds that are made with rice and flour wrappers. And we have two flavors. The pork and purple cabbage and our tofu and mushroom thats really thanks. So question you have, what, three restaurants we have three right now. Yeah, we have one in the Inner Richmond and one in marin and another one in nuevo ali. Can i just ask you, is all this locally sourced the potstickers have a resource from a variety of partners. One of them is hodo tofu based out of east bay and for our pork, we work with a really special producer called Kleeman Farms that makes a really amazing hair. This sandwich, by the way, this is huge. I would bite into it on the air, but im going to just wait till the commercial break. This is an amazing chicken sandwich. Ooh, i got save a bite for me. But can i just ask you also like obviously brandon ju, michelin star chef. Right. And we often associate that with kind of cuisine talk about, you know, what he intended being a part of this. Yeah. Ben and i and brandon met back in 2016. Ben and i were working on our organic Foods Company that started actually in shanghai for many years. And we really connected over how how we grew up eating a lot of chineseamerican food. Its very quintessentially american. And we found that because we were so deep in the organic world, we were really looking for something that had these flavors that was really focused on how things were made and what theyre made with. And we met brandon through a mutual friend. He had just started mr. Jus doing something really special with the cuisine and we connected over how this is something that we really love to see in the world, something casual, accessible, something that people could really resonate with as a food that they grew up eating. And so we decided to go on this journey together and that was its been a few years and we so far have seen that people have resonated with it. Yeah. So youve got its interesting. I want to see the whole menu because i dont think of a chicken sandwich is a traditional chinese meal, but you have sandwiches, you have soft serve. Thats new, right . It is, yeah. Thats part of our fall menu. We have the chicken sandwiches. Yeah. Its not a quintessential chineseamerican dish. We try to take things that pay homage to this cuisine in ways that really also put an interesting twist on things sometimes. And the chicken sandwich was really born with this idea of taking our students, our chicken, which is made with a rice batter thats like really extra crispy and figuring out a way to bring it forward with something sweet. And thats where the pineapple bun came in. And so we released these two this year just the month ago, and we have the spicy, tingly, spicy one and the honey hawk one. Oh, my gosh. Wait the chicken sandwich is made with bolo mian . Is that what youre telling me the bun is . Yeah. Boulevard. Okay. Amazing. Thank you so much, mama juju. Appreciate it.
