Emotions coming out in the east bay where the Alameda County District Attorney, pamela price, hosted her latest talk with neighbors there. The conversation working towards building a better bay area. Good evening. Thanks for being here. Im Julian Glover. And im ahmad daetz. Price has been doing town halls in several communities over the summer. The most recent was at a local church this past weekend and she was in two other oakland neighborhoods in august and july. Most have been met with a mix of supporters and opponents. Abc seven News Reporter tim johns was in fremont for tonights community conversation. And a small protest happening right outside. About 100 people packed the Niles Discovery Church in fremont wednesday. Over 300 more were on zoom. The reason, a chance to talk with Alameda County District Attorney pamela price. I believe in reform. I dont believe in letting murderers out on close to no charges. So there has to be punishment before you can have reform. Recall pamela price. Patricia harris was one of those in attendance at a recall price rally ahead of the meeting, she told us she voted for the da but now regrets it. Harris says after her son was killed, she believes price didnt prosecute his killer harshly enough. The person that did it was up on murder charges up until now. Pamela price took office, reduced all the charges to involuntary, took all the enhancements away. As a father of town halls, the price is done. In the past, there were several heated moments. Some people even got so frustrated that they stormed out of the event. What is there . A former cop and former veterans . Im a victim here. Theyre not being prosecuted. And in your head, one of those who left was laura koski, who says she thinks price avoided answering audience questions. I listened to her over and over again talking about how, you know, people in jail are so mistreated and we have to get them out. And were over incarcerating and price, however, defended her record throughout the night. She spoke about the reforms shes brought to the das office. She also hit back at claims shes soft on crime and says she believes the amount of guns in the community plays a large part in the violence. We are in a unique, crazy time where everybody in this community has a gun, and so were not going to be able to lock our way up out of this situation. One particular point of contention was her view on charging enhancements, something many in the audience say they want to see more of, but something the da doesnt always agree with and an issue price campaigned on the use of those enhancements has driven the explosion of prisons has forced us to invest in prisons versus education. While wednesdays town hall at spo certain rifts within the Alameda County community, one thing is still true price remains committed to her platform of criminal justice reform. Our crime wave if we consider it in oakland, started long before my inaugural session in january in fremont. Tim johns, abc7 news. The conversation doesnt just end there. You can watch our own one on one interview with price about her first nine months in office. Right now online its on abc7 news. Com or your abc7 bay area app. Building a better bay area. Those five words motivate our news team as we bring you local stories that matter here at abc7. And were finding some progress to that mission to highlight for you tonight. The first came during a conversation between two big names here in sf. Dreamforce brings tens of thousands of people to San Francisco and is one of the premier tech conferences. But San Francisco itself became the focus of todays keynote. Ceo marc benioff sat down with governor gavin newsom and the conversation got into some of the biggest issues facing our city. Why can San Francisco not be like this every single royal day . Why does it take us having to say what is it . What can be what is that . The answer is yes. It can be like this. Newsoms reaction was pretty political. He said, yes, it should be. And its up to the locals to decide that they want San Francisco to be this clean. All the time. And its not an easy problem. It didnt happen overnight, and it wont be going away overnight. Benioff also asking newsom about providing housing for the unhoused, and the governor said the courts and local cities need to take on some sort of accountability. And hes spending upwards of 7 billion and people just arent seeing the results that theyve been expecting. So thats why hes saying got to get on it, got to get on it locally, got to get it on a statewide level. And youve got to lay down the rules about behavior as well as identify and go for solutions, whether benioff plans to bring dreamforce back to San Francisco next year also came up. But he said he was not yet ready to commit our next building. A better bay area breakthrough tonight is in the form of about 15 million coming just in time.
