The new eastern span of the bay bridge lit up with thousands of lead bulbs. The lights are ready to go, but the bridge itself is not so much. But it could change sooner than expected. Good evening. Right now i am on the spot of the future traffic jam. It is all about the lighting. Cal trans flipped the switch and conducted another test of the bay bridge and you can see a gorgeous waxing moon above the man made version. We also learned there is a possibility that this new bridge could be open on labor day. Tonight was another appetizer before the bridge opens for real. They turned on 1500 lights and the suspension portion of the bridge. They use half of the emergency of other lights and last 10 to 15 years each. The lighting builds it is a lifts off the oakland shore and reaches out to the tower. The light poles increase in height and finally you reach the the if you will, the grand finale at the top of the bridge. It came at the end of the day when they had a temporary fix for the seismic bolts on the bridge. It involves large steel plates and gaps on the deck, somewhat like a folded napkin under a table to stabilize it. The temporary fix should cost an extra million dollars. We need to gthe old br the old bridge. If they say the temporary fix is sufficient we should move people over on Labor Day Weekend if at all possible. Officials say drivers would be able to use the bridge while workers in stalled the permanent repair. Steel saddles to repair the span costing 10 million to 20 million. They will decide whether the bridge can open on land on labor day after weighing many factors. How much notice does the public need . What events are happening on what weekend . How soon can various transit agencies and how soon can the chp get ready . So now cal trans is saying for real thursday is the day when they will say when the bay bridge is open. A woman killed in a freak accident involving heavy duty construction equipment. It happened at San Jose City college. Abc7 News Reporter lisa amin Lisa Amin Gulezian was there. The woman was in the walkway about 50 feet back when a front leader that was moving dirt backed up and crushed her. A small bouquet placed in the spot where a woman died. Earlier Campus Police surrounded the scene near the Fine Arts Building and the cosmetology school. A front loader that was in reverse backed into a woman while she walked along a pedestrian walkway. The grandmother and mother i want to give my deep con condolences. The work site shutdown immediately after the crash and the driver of the backhoe spoke to grief counselors on the spot. He works for preston pipelines, a company hired to work on an under ground water valve. He has been an operating engineer for years. Calosha is investigating the crash. It released records showing in july of 2011 the mill pea dis disbased company was fined 560 for improperly securing loads. And in 2009 the pipeline was fined 4,000 for a serious violation involving heat illness standards. Many on campus just couldnt believe what happened. Very scary. Usually it is a very quiet area. A reward in this case has grown to 30,000. A body in vacaville found last friday has now been identified as a missing oakland woman. Oakland police made the grim announcement this afternoon, but they reveal little else about how the federal investigator actually died. She disappeared on august 4th, over a week ago. Randy alana who dated coke years ago was seen with her the night she disappeared and is considered a person of interest. He was a registered sex offender on an unrelated offense. A man faces charges after his girlfriend was found stabbed to death at the apartment they shared. A camp leader from richmond died in a water fall while trying to show campers how to slide down rocks. It happened at the Sierra National forest and officers say 37yearold daniel green law was teaching a group of six campers on saturday how to slide down rocks when he lost his footing and was swept over a 100foot water fall. His waterfall and his body was recovered on sunday morning. The group that recommended city college of San Francisco have its accreditation revoked is facing its own problems. The department of education has sent a letter to the accrediting commission of junior colleges and says it did not comply with federal rules when it decided to pull ccss accredited accredited do dation. And they are married to a man who is on the team who evaluated the city college, a conflict of interest. A spokesperson says it is not clear what impact if any it will have on the schools future.
