Mexico and heading to washington state. So many people got injured that the chp has had a difficult time trying to interview them all to try to find out exactly why the bus plowed into that pole. It took just over an hour for the First Responders to get out the passengers. The bus was split in half by a 30 foot pole that pep traited half way down the middle. A few passengers got out and found walking along the highway shoulder. 17 passengers were taken to hospitals and six of them by med evam hospitals. The bus driver was unable to tell chp what had happened. He wasnt able to give a statement at this time due to the extent of injuries that he sustained in the collision. Reporter the drivers family in los angeles new by taye break something had happened. I knew something was wrong when he didnt wake me up by day break. Reporter the highway peat role elite Investigation Team note as mate is on scene with the safety administration. The chp said the families of those who were on board need to know how this crash happened. There are no visible skid marks to indicate the bus was braking hard. The mate team, they are looking to identify tire friction marks that may not be visible to the naked eye. They are very thorough and well advanced in accident Investigation Team. Reporter it is believed that there was a planned stop in sacramento. He is very responsible. When he got tired, he told all of the other drivers, you could take over from here because he knew it was important for him to come home. Reporter near livingston in merced county, david louie, abc 7 news. And Melanie Woodrow is looking into the driving record of vasquez. Hes had problems in the past. New at 4 30, found out what she learned about him and the charter bus companys record when it comes to inspecting its vehicles. This is the deadliest bus crash in california since ten people were killed on interstate five near the town of orrland in 2014. In that crash a fedex tractortrailer slammed into a bus carrying douzen of Southern CaliforniaHigh School Students and more than 30 were injured. The fedex driver veered over the median into oncoming traffic but unable to determine why and the driver died in that crash. An illegal campfire left unattended started a wildfire that burned 43,000 acres in Monterey County. Investigators Just Announced that the campfire was started and left behind in an off trail area of a state park. Both fires and camping are illegal there. The trail leading in and around the area is a very common trail but where the campfire was is not part of the sanctioned trail system. The fire has already destroyed 57 homes and is blamed for the death of one person. Right now that fire is just 18 contained. Power has been restored to a San Francisco neighborhood after an underground pg e vault exposed and damaged equipment. It happened overnight at the corner of geary and hyde streets. Residents were startled by the explosion coming from the vault, i heard a loud boom and i thought it was a gunshot and i looked outside and everybody was on their balconies looking over. We just saw some steam coming out of the hole. Weird. Hundreds initially lost power after the blast. Crews worked overnight to restore electricity to most of those effects. Pg e is investigating why that failed. In the race for president , donald trump is making new waves while Hillary Clinton is taking a break from the campaign trail. And former San Mateo Police officer pled not guilty and waived his right to a speedy hearing when he faces rape, kidnapping and Sexual Battery charges involving five women. A federal lawsuit filed by four San Francisco county jail inmates who allege they were forced to fight gladiate style by sheriffs deputies has been settled for 90,000. The board of supervisors approved the settlement last week and is expected to give final passage this afternoon. The four inmates will divide the settlement amongst themselves. In march of 2015 they accused three deputies of forcing them to fight each other while incarcerated in the San Francisco jail. All three of the deputies face criminal charges. One has resigned from the department. It was a close call for a teenager overnight in hayward. A preus slammed into her family house on mure street and ended a few feet away from her bedroom. A man and woman in the car stayed at the scene and cooperated with police. No arrests were made and no one was hurt. California cut back on water usage by 21. 5 in june. That is not as much as the 27 saved in june of last year. This is the first month of relaxed water restrictions in the state after an el nino winter. The water control board said despite the restrictions they urge water customers to continue trying to save and the board may reinstate restrictions for some communities where water use has risen significantly. At least five firefighters tried to reek the small pooch named tiny. The 15yearold dog is blind which explains how he fell into that hole. Tiny is now safe and sound. And you are looking at volunteer firefighters taking part in a rather unusual rescue in son omma county. They are trying to free a familys cow, also named tiny. But not so tiny. After the bovine tunnelled down a hill at a ranch, the rescue started late last night. Large Animal Rescue specialists also helped with the heavy lifting. We presume that tiny is okay as well. Todays annual state of the climate report found sea levels and Carbon Dioxide levels have reached historic highs. Scientists blame Climate Change and el nino. The president announced today every federal agency will factor the effects of Climate Change in policy decisions. At 5 00, the latest on the investigation and talking to the dance been about the hiring process. Reporter david louie tweeted from the scene of a deadly bus crash. Five people were killed when the bus hit a steel pole holding up a sign along highway 99 in merced county. You could see in the picture the sign has been removed. What the crash looked like this morning. Just awful. The federal carries gave them a satisfactory bus rating in may but there could be more to the records than the rating indicates. Melanie woodrow looked deeper into the driver and the safety records. She joins us live now. The federal Motor Carrier Administration gives that company a satisfactory rating. No crashes in two years. But the driver of the bus that crashed today had a severe violation on record. Reporter this year the bus at the center of the tragic accident is registered to a fresno company, but it is unclear if that company was operating the bus when it crashed. Chp officers visited the companys headquarters today. The company has eight vehicles and 14 drivers in its fleet. According to the federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration website auto bus usa had 29 inspections over the last two years. Of 26 vehicle inspections, eight wells were placed out of service. That is 30. 8 higher than the National Average of 20. 72 . Of 18 driver inspections, four drivers were placed out of service. That is 22. 2 . Significantly higher than the National Average of 5. 51 . Vehicle violations highlight several instances of brake problems, including one instance of no brake warning device or a defective brake warning device and an instance of nonworking headlines and a tire worn down so much the inner material was exposed and two instances of worn and welded or missing steering system components. Driver violations highlight problems with multiple drivers logbooks, including a false report. The most severe driver violation on february 5th, 2015, one driver was operating a vehicle on a suspended lice that was suspended for a license for a safety related or unknown reason. According to a criminal check, that driver is the same drafr operating the bus that crashed today. Mario vasquez was charged february 6th, 2015 and convicted the following month. Mosquitos in a miami neighborhood where 14 zika cases have been reported are encountering problems there. As Elizabeth Hur reports, officials are trying a new tactic to bring the disease under control. Mosquito control in miami in full force. Spraying pesticides you know about the zika virus handing out bug repellent to residents. And even delivering pamphlets and zika prevention kits and treatment for standing water. It is scary. Well im not pregnant so im not that concerned about it. But concern among locals and visitors is mixed. It makes me slightly nervous but not enough to change what i do every day. For now the 14 locally transmitted cases of zika are contained to one neighborhood. One square mile north of downtown miami. But Health Officials expect that number will grow. This is a sometimes referred to as a cockroach of mosquitos. It could survive about anywhere and it could breed in a capsule of water, it is an indoor mosquito. Authorities stopping the spread is paramount and protecting pregnant women a priority because while those infected usually show no symptoms, the virus is linked to severe birth defects and the reason the cdc Just Announced 16 million in additional funding to better monitor and detect birth defects possibly caused by zika. What weve realized over the weekend was that the mosquito counts were not coming down as we had liked so we havent achieved good Mosquito Control in that area. Reporter it turns out the mosquitos could be growing resistant to pesticides, forcing officials to now experiment with different types of control methods, including aerial spraying, just approved by the mayor of miamidade. Elizabeth hur, abc news, miami. A fiveyearold maryland boy hurt in a shootout between his mother and police is expected to survive. The monday afternoon shooting in suburban baltimore left the mother dead. Officers went to the apartment to serve warrants after she failed to appear in traffic court. Authorities say gaines pointed a shotgun at the officers and threatened to kill them after an hours long standoff. And during an exchange of gunfire her son was shot in the arm. It is unclear if he was injured by gunfire from police or his mother. There were times when we thought this had come to a peaceful resolution and closure and there were other times she was highly agitated. During the confrontation, gaines tool cell phone video and posted the clips to her facebook and instagram accounts. Police asked facebook to take down the video saying they were evidence. The company has since deactivated the account. A pennsylvania man is in custody after he tried to flush a baby down a toilet. A baby. It happened in pittsburgs mt. Washington neighborhood just after midnight. Police say this incident started when a man and a woman living in a home in the 100 block of southern avenue started arguing. During the argument the male pulls out a gun and attempted to flush the child down the toilet. The woman and the baby did escape. The woman called police and the child was taken to a local hospital as a precaution. The man surrendered just after 2 30 a. M. It is unclear what charges hell be facing. And local farmers are being blamed for this. Residents of jones, oklahoma, are losing the battle to keep the flies out of houses. It is after about one to two days of being an adult, and they could each lay up to about 600 eggs each. Extreme sports enthusiast damien leroy went paragliding and within minutes he spined out of control after his lines got tangles. The cause was a sputtering engine failure on the paraglider which is a kite attached to a propeller engine. There was just a feeling that just said, there is a a super soft bush right there and you should jump and so i jumped. And it was the best decision i ever made. Leroy suffered a broken back, femur, pelvis, three broken ribs and a punctured lung and it is a miracle he survived. Good given what he went through. Flossing is a universally recommended Health Habits but there are new questions about how effective it really is. The federal government is now saying there is little evidence that flossing prevented gum disease or cavities. The Associated Press review of 20 25 studies found they were weak and unreliable. There have been reports of three children cutting their mouths while drinking the straws. They come in three packs and were also sold with stainless steel beverage cups. Regulators saw the straws have ridge ips that keep it attached to the lid and not allow children to use the straws and should return those straws immediately. Bloomberg business reports consumers are switching to water because it is calorie free and healthier than soda. Adding to that. The study found participants with higher concentration of omega 3 from seafood in their blood were about 10 less likely to die from a heart attack. People who get more protein from plant sources have a lower risk of dying than those who consume animal protein. Getting the classes needed in college is never easy but now some students at cal are finding it nearly impossible to enroll in the subjects that they need in order to graduate on time. Now this year, the enrollment process has not been business as usual. Some students think it is fair, others worry they may not be able to graduate on time. This afternoon, laura brandt was still trying to finalize her fall Class Schedule at cal. She needs 16 unities but only units but only has 15. I cannot add another course but i want to add another course so i have a full load so do i need to drop a class to add this class. If you are confused, so we were we. Until we got the lowdown on the new enrollment system. At cal, when school starts, undergraduates must have a maximum of 16 units or four classes, period. But before finalizing the schedule, under the old enrollment system called telebears, students could sign up for more than the 16 units, knowing they would have to drop one of them. It was called holding a course. The the new system called cal central doesnt allow. That we went with a system because basically students were enrolling in a bunch of classes that they werent sure they were going to end up taking or not. And so that made their wait list process going slower. That used to make it harder for some students to get into a highdemand course. Nobody could hold on to that class while im youre either enrolled in it it or you are not and that is effectively good. Reporter but at associated students of the school expressed their concern about the new process. So they are stuck when they are only technically enrolled in maybe one or two classes, which causes a bunch of problems making them potentially not considered a full time student. The driver of this charter bus hit a highway sign pole that effectively sliced open the roof of the bus like a can opener. Good evening and thank you for joining us. Im ama daetz in for kristen zse. And im dan ashley. An investigation is underway into why five people died and others were injured in the accident. A charter bus crashed into a sign pole in merced county. Passengers were trapped in the wreckage as the pole nearly split the bus in half, as you could see. David louie tweeted out the picture of workers dismantling the pole. David is live near highway 99 in livingston. David . Reporter dan and ama, after an all day operation, the bus has been removed. It took the removal of the sign for fear it might crash on to other traffic. As you see, the crash caused the pole to slice into the bus and almost half way down the length of the bus killing five people and injuring more than a dozen. With no visible skid marks it appears the bus may have smashed into the pole at full speed. Chp investigators have been searching for any marking on the pavement that may indicate the driver was attempting to brake. A few passengers managed to escape. They were what a chp officer call the walking wounded and others were trapped inside. It took First Responders an hour to extract them. Hampered by the pole that split the bus in half. The bus driver, the 57yearold vasquez was unable to tell chp what had happened. He wasnt able to give us a statement at this time due to the except of injuries he sustained in the collision. The drivers family in los angeles woke up this morning knowing something bad had happened. I knew something was wrong when he didnt come back in the morning. He didnt wake me up. [ crying ] reporter the dismantling of the sign and the crash investigation kept northbound highway 99 closed for nearly 11 hours, forcing a heavy truck and carload on to a frontage road and one lane was reopened after noon.
