After months of searching for the suspects, finally multiple people under arrest thanks in large part to dramatic cell phone video of that brutal beating. Both are being kept in seclusion at the santa rita jail in dublin. The prehearing was postponed to next month. Harriss said he was not a promoter, just an artist and musician and should not be prosecuted. He was just like every person in that fire who perished except he was lucky enough to get out alive. A judge found 20yearold Michelle Carter guilty of manslaughter today. Three years ago carter texted her 18yearold boyfriend conrad roy, encouraging him to follow through with a plan to commit suicide. The judge ruled its not those texts that made her guilty, but the one she sent when he told her he had gotten out of his truck as it was filled with carbon monoxide. She told him to, quote, get back in. Both karlter and roy suffer from severe depression. Carter will be sentenced in august. Although the judge in bill cosby Sexual Assault trial is really frustrated with the jury, hes going to give them all the time they need to reach a verdict. The panel has so far deliberated more than 45 hours and they still cant come to a decision. This morning they asked the judge to explain the standard of proof in a criminal trial. A shortage of officers has plagued the city for several years, but now Officials Say the tide has turned. Abc7 News Reporter matt keller has the story from san jose. Its a big deal, a very big deal for us. Reporter San Jose Police chief eddy garcia is celebrating today. A year ago he was dealing with historically low numbers of officers on the street, low morale and a class of 7 recruits. Today 54 recruits, the most in several years. Were not where we want to be yet and we wont rebuild overnight. But make no mistake, we are rising again. And help is on the way. Reporter a lot of help, 107 new officers are currently in the training process. 27 are in the Field Training program. 26 are midway through Academy Class 29, and 54 starting Academy Class 30 today. That will bring the total number of sworn personnel to 983. Well short of the departments authorized level of 1,109 officers. While the new recruits are getting the attention today, the officers who have stuck it out with the department over the past six years have dealt with layoffs and cuts in pay and pension. They are currently working mandatory overtime, 160 tenhour shifts a week. This is not a department that is being made great because we have 54 new recruits. This is a department that was already great. Reporter command staff said they have not lowered the standards to be an officer, but more aggressive recruiting. Gone are the day where they attracted Law Enforcement talent. They now have to go get them. The issues that caused the department to lose officers have been fixed. Pay, pension and other benefits are back to being competitive with other departments. Now is the time to rebuild. Anybody who has been, you know, in a boat thats taken on water is happy the holes are fixed. The only thing they have to do is bail out water and thats what were doing now. Reporter the Academy Class is scheduled to graduate in december and will be patrolling on their own in april. Matt keller, abc7 news. Californias Unemployment Rate fell last month to the lowest level in state history. The state Employment Department Department Says it added 17,600 jobs in may. That dropped Unemployment Rate to 4. 7 . It ties the record low that occurred back in november to december of the year 2000. Officials say governmentled eight of californias Industry Sectors in adding jobs last month. Three sectors reported job declines. A rock slide at yosemite wont stop you from getting to the park this weekend, but it will make the trip longer. The slide happened monday. Anyone trying to get into the park will have to take highway 41 through oakhurst. Some yosemite employees say the slide has increased their commute 2 1 2 hours. Reporter President Trump is railing against the independent investigation amid reports that his actions are being reviewed for possible obstruction of justice. The president tweeting, i am being investigated for firing the fbi director by the man who told me to fire the fbi director witch hunt. Those tweets seemed to confirm the president is among the people under investigation by special counsel bob mueller who was appointed by the Deputy Attorney general rod rosenstein. In a memo to the president , rosenstein raised concerns over former director james comeys performance, but its mueller not rosenstein who is heading the investigation. But abc7 news has learned rosenstein has started to discuss recusing himself from the investigation which would make him the third person to recuse himself from the probe. And while the president may be commenting on twitter, he was mum when asked for clarification as he traveled to miami today. The white house appears to be pedaling back from the president s tweets saying it does not confirm he is under investigation, but otherwise his tweets speak for themselves. Also vicepresident pence has decided to hire private lawyers to answer inquiries by the private counsel, but he brushed it off as routine. There is no indication at all pence is part of this investigation. Abc7 news has also confirmed one more person retaining legal representation in the probe, the personal attorney michael koenl. There is another member who may be under investigation. Jared kushner, the president s soninlaw and special advisor. President trump is setting it up for more tense relationship between the u. S. And cuba. He criticized Barack Obamas dealings with cuba during a speech this morning. He said hes cancelling the previous administrations one sided deal with cuba although he is leaving many of its policies in place. Trump is calling on cuba to release all Political Prisoners and to legalize all political parties. When cuba is ready to take concrete steps to these ends, we will be ready, willing and able to come to the table to negotiate that much better deal. President trumps changes could restrict some u. S. Today the Trump Administration announced it will continue the daka program indefinitely. Daka shields undocumented youth from deportation if they came to the u. S. Before the age of 16. It means they can renew it, continue working, continue to be protected and its very good news for people, young people who qualify who havent applied yet. Now, the Trump Administration did eliminate the dapa program, dapa which would have protected immigrant parents from deportation, but that was never implemented. The man killed in a Police Shootout at a washington, d. C. Area baseball field was carrying a list of names including that of the congressman he shot. Sources tell abc7 news a piece of paper in james hodgekinsons pocket listed a dozen members of congress. Investigators have not determined the purpose of that list. Congressman Steve Scalise remains in Critical Condition today. They also revealed scalise was very close to death when he was brought in wednesday morning. Lodge hodgekinson shot scalise in the ship when they were practicing for the congressional baseball game. Scalise suffered severe internal injuries. I have not counted but i would guess that there are hundreds of fragments, and usually theres more risk involved in trying to find and remove those fragments than benefit. The conversation continued. When a passenger asked if that would be taking advantage, the driver says this. I would get really drunk, too, and i cant be held responsible. Reporter the man who recorded the video he thought the driver crossed the line so he posted the video on facebook as a warning to women in san jose. He also complained to uber and said the company was very responsive. Uber released a statement to abc7 news that reads, the comments in this video are disturbing and do not represent our driverpartner community. This driver has been banned from uber. Thats good news to this uber user. Because it would make me extremely uncomfortable to know they were okay with somebody who spoke like that driving their car. Reporter this woman remains skeptical. I dont know what uber really does to ensure that their drivers are qualified, or that they are actually decent people.
