Reporter and as we come back live, you can see the top of that building with just the slightest amount of smoke coming up with that shelter in place does remain in effect according to the Fire Department. We asked chief hayes white if she has any record of any problem with this building. She said not that shes aware of, but theyll certainly be looking into it. We begin with Spencer Christian in what is going to be a brutal weekend for many. Its going to be quite hot, larry. Into next week as a matter of fact. Heres a look at live doppler 7. We have sunny skies. As you pointed out, the heat has arrived already and will intensify into the weekend. Temperature readings of 68 here in San Francisco, 76 across the bay in oakland, 80 in moup tan view, 85 is this san jose, 89 in gilroy, 64 in half moon bay. Ocean beach from mount tam, 95 in santa rosa. 94 in napa, 96 apiece in fairfield and concord. 92 in livermore. They may not be the max temperatures for the day. Lets take a look at our first forecast. It will be a warm evening during the overnight hours, temperatures will drop only to the mid to upper 50s in most parts. Mild start tomorrow morning, tomorrow afternoon well see highs ranging from 6 at the coast to 102 inland. Heat advisory is in effect from tomorrow morning through monday evening. And an excessive heat warning is in effect from noon sunday to 8 00 p. M. Tuesday for much of the bay area. So, this heat is just going to hang around for quite a while. Wear loose fitting clothes, wear a wide brim hat. Reporter it is expected to draw 5,000 people. The first few days will be sizzling with fathers day being one of the hottest. New developments in the case of a bay area lyft driver attacked by a group of dirt bikers on highway 101 earlier this year. After months of searching for the suspects, finally multiple people under arrest thanks in large part to dramatic cell phone video of that brutal beating. Abc7 news anchor Jessica Castro has the story. Reporter a major break in the case of a bay area lyft driver severely hurt after reportedly being beaten up on 101 southbound by a group of dirt bike riders. He had a broken leg as i said. He had a bloodied face. He had road rash. He was in pretty rough shape. Reporter officers had been looking for suspects for months. Chp posted video and photos today on their Facebook Page showing the arrests. Abc7 news talked to the lyft driver, 35yearold alex keen tan a right after he gotta tacked in early march. They were all hitting and kicking from everywhere. Reporter he described a nasty encounter near the Caesar Chavez exit with the bikers trying to run him off the road, then surrounding him, damaging his car, and beating him up. He look me right in the eyes. And im like, all i could do was lay there and cry. Think about my kids. Reporter the father had severe injuries, a broken nose and shattered leg. Chp says they arrested 33yearold johnson 25yearold Gabriel Rodriguez and 19yearold. On social media chp thanked the public for giving them tips and the victim for being patient. The suspects face a range of charges, some of the most serious include assault with a deadly weapon, conspiracy and battery. Jessica castro, abc7 news. The two defendants in the deadly ghost ship fire case appeared together in court for the first time today. Derek almena and max harris each face 36 counts ever involuntary manslaughter. Both are being kept in seclusion at the santa rita jail in dublin. The prehearing was postponed to next month. Harriss said he was not a promoter, just an artist and musician and should not be prosecuted. He was just like every person in that fire who perished except he was lucky enough to get out alive. There was no duty on him. He had no role there to force him to check. He thought everything was safe. Harriss aunt also spoke today. You can hear her emotional plea. His girlfriend happened to be in the car with him and his daughter. The minnesota said it is going to dismiss that Police Officer. Abc7 News Reporter Danya Bacchus has the reaction. Reporter a minnesota jury finding the Police Officer in this video not guilty of Second Degree manslaughter for last years shooting death of philando ka steel. During the trial he testified he saw the gun and that he disregarded his command not to pull it out of his pocket. I told him not to reach for it. Get his handout. Reporter prosecutors said he fired seven shots in the car just seconds after he told the officer he was carrying a permitted gun. You saw him get his i. D. , sir, his drivers license. Oh, my god please dont tell me hes dead. Reporter the aftermath was streamed live on facebook by the girlfriend who was in the passenger seat. His death sparked protests across the state. The jurys decision reached after nearly a week of testimony, arguments and evidence including the officers dashcam video. The family now speaking out about the verdict. Reporter Danya Bacchus, abc7 news, los angeles. A Massachusetts Woman who texted her boyfriend urging him to kill himself faces up to 20 years in prison. A judge found 20yearold Michelle Carter guilty of manslaughter today. Three years ago carter texted her 18yearold boyfriend conrad roy, encouraging him to follow through with a plan to commit suicide. The judge ruled its not those texts that made her guilty, but the one she sent when he told her he had gotten out of his truck as it was filled with carbon monoxide. She told him to, quote, get back in. Both karlter and roy suffer from severe depression. Carter will be sentenced in august. Although the judge in bill cosby Sexual Assault trial is really frustrated with the jury, hes going to give them all the time they need to reach a verdict. The panel has so far deliberated more than 45 hours and they still cant come to a decision. This morning they asked the judge to explain the standard of proof in a criminal trial. Jury deliberations have now lasted about as long as the prosecution and defense cases combined. Meanwhile, cosby tweeted a thank you to his fans. Pack your patience with you. San jose leaders are celebrating today as the Police Department starts a new academy. A shortage of officers has plagued the city for several years, but now Officials Say the tide has turned. Abc7 News Reporter matt keller has the story from san jose. Its a big deal, a very big deal for us. Reporter San Jose Police chief eddy garcia is celebrating today. A year ago he was dealing with historically low numbers of officers on the street, low morale and a class of 7 recruits. Today 54 recruits, the most in several years. Were not where we want to be yet and we wont rebuild overnight. But make no mistake, we are rising again. And help is on the way. Reporter a lot of help, 107 new officers are currently in the training process. 27 are in the Field Training program. 26 are midway through Academy Class 29, and 54 starting Academy Class 30 today. That will bring the total number of sworn personnel to 983. Well short of the departments authorized level of 1,109 officers. While the new recruits are getting the attention today, the officers who have stuck it out with the department over the past six years have dealt with layoffs and cuts in pay and pension. They are currently working mandatory overtime, 160 tenhour shifts a week. This is not a department that is being made great because we have 54 new recruits. This is a department that was already great. Reporter command staff said they have not lowered the standards to be an officer, but more aggressive recruiting. Gone are the day where they attracted Law Enforcement talent. They now have to go get them. The issues that caused the department to lose officers have been fixed. Pay, pension and other benefits are back to being competitive with other departments. Now is the time to rebuild. Anybody who has been, you know, in a boat thats taken on water is happy the holes are fixed. The only thing they have to do is bail out water and thats what were doing now. Reporter the Academy Class is scheduled to graduate in december and will be patrolling on their own in april. Matt keller, abc7 news. Californias Unemployment Rate fell last month to the lowest level in state history. The state Employment Department Department Says it added 17,600 jobs in may. That dropped Unemployment Rate to 4. 7 . It ties the record low that occurred back in november to december of the year 2000. Officials say governmentled eight of californias Industry Sectors in adding jobs last month. Three sectors reported job declines. Leisure and hospitality followed by professional and business services. Apple is showing hollywood its serious about making its own tv and movies. The cupertino based company has hired two of sonys top tv executives and put them in charge of video jayme urlich has created shark tang and gold bergz, breaking bad. Apple is experimenting in making original video including projects for pop stars drake and taylor swift. The world famous maverick big wave surf contest was nearly bought by the world surf league, but the current owners turned it down. Our colleagues at the Bay Area News Group are reporting the future of that contest is now very much up in the air. The league tried to buy the rights to mavericks after a june 1st auction to sell the event fell through because there was a lack of interest. The current owner filed for bankruptcy protection this year and has canceled the contest. A rock slide at yosemite wont stop you from getting to the park this weekend, but it will make the trip longer. The slide happened monday. Take a look. 4,000 pounds of rock now sits on the highway 140 entrance into yosemite. The heap is the size of a twostory house. Anyone trying to get into the park will have to take highway 41 through oakhurst. Some yosemite employees say the slide has increased their commute 2 1 2 hours. Were looking at 68 degrees in San Francisco and half moon bay. So the coast is nice and mild. Right around the bay, oakland, san mateo readings in the mid to upper 70s. Inland areas now 96 at concord, 98 at san ramon. 99 in brentwood. It was 101 in brentwood a moment ago. This is santa cruz beach, folks enjoying the beach weather. These are our forecast features. Heat advisory in effect saturday through monday evening. Well see triple digit temperature readings, up to about 106 in some locations a couple days in the forecast period. This excessive heat is going to last through wednesday or thursday of next week. Overnight look for clear skies from coast to inland, low temperatures will range from upper 50s to low and mid 60s so it will be very mild overnight. And very warm tomorrow. Upper 60s to 70s at the coast tomorrow. Well see upper 80s to about 90 right around the bay. 102 at fairfield and antioch tomorrow. 101 at concord, 1900 at santa rosa and livermore. Well still see numerous locations in the 100 degrees to 105 in that range. That range will be with us again on tuesday. And it gets even hotter on wednesday if you can believe that. So, heres a look at your fathers day planner. It will be sunny throughout the day. Well start the day in the Morning Hours with temperatures ranging from mid 60s to mid 70s. Bay side, inland areas. By noon sunday, 106 the hottest locations inland on sunday. Its just going to sizzle. And we will have temperatures well above the average levels, possibly even a couple records. Heres a look at our projected High Temperature for sunday for six bay area locations antioch down to San Francisco. Notice the change. 19 degrees warmer than average in antioch on sunday. 18 degrees warmer than antioch we predict than average we predict in san jose. 17 degrees warmer than average in napa. Sailor was hurt and 7 others are missing after a Navy Destroyer collided with a merchant vessel. It happened 50 miles off the coast of japan. The navy ship involved in the collision was the uss fitzgerald seen in this stock photo. The other was a merchant vessel. There is flooding in three compartments in the fitzgerald. Sky 7 shows us a 4 alarm warehouse fire that was burning in the bay view district. Neighbors say cable car bells and souvenirs were packed inside the building on ingles street and donner avenue. They are telling them to avoid the area. They issued a shelter in place because of toxic smoke from the burning metal thats inside. Nobody has been injured thus far. President trump confirmed today he is being investigated for possible ties to the russians and for firing his former fbi director, mr. Trump did that in a series of tweets. Reporter President Trump is railing against the independent investigation amid reports that his actions are being reviewed for possible obstruction of justice. The president tweeting, i am being investigated for firing the fbi director by the man who told me to fire the fbi director witch hunt. Those tweets seemed to confirm the president is among the people under investigation by special counsel bob mueller who was appointed by the Deputy Attorney general rod rosenstein. In a memo to the president , rosenstein raised concerns over former director james comeys performance, but its mueller not rosenstein who is heading the investigation. But abc7 news has learned rosenstein has started to discuss recusing himself from the investigation which would make him the third person to recuse himself from the probe. And while the president may be commenting on twitter, he was mum when asked for clarification as he traveled to miami today. The white house appears to be pedaling back from the president s tweets saying it does not confirm he is under investigation, but otherwise his tweets speak for themselves. Also vicepresident pence has decided to hire private lawyers to answer inquiries by the private counsel, but he brushed it off as routine. There is no indication at all pence is part of this investigation. Abc7 news has also confirmed one more person retaining legal representation in the probe, the personal attorney michael koenl. There is another member who may be under investigation. Jared kushner, the president s soninlaw and special advisor. Kushners lawyers say he will provide any information he knows about russian related matters. La lana zach, abc7 news, washington. President trump is setting it up for more tense relationship between the u. S. And cuba. He criticized Barack Obamas dealings with cuba during a speech this morning. He said hes cancelling the previous administrations one sided deal with cuba although he is leaving many of its policies in place. Trump is calling on cuba to release all Political Prisoners and to legalize all political parties. When cuba is ready to take concrete steps to these ends, we will be ready, willing and able to come to the table to negotiate that much better deal. President trumps changes could restrict some u. S. Companies from doing business in cuba. Senator jerry more an, a kansas republican, said thats bad for farmers. In a statement he said, putting America First means exporting what we produce to other countries, including cuba. Big sigh of relief for socalled dreamers. Today the Trump Administration announced it will continue the daka program indefinitely. Daka shields undocumented youth from deportation if they came to the u. S. Before the age of 16. That Program Began in 2012 with an executive order from president obama and it protected some 800,000 youth. President trump had promised in that program but then changed his mind. Todays decision is excellent news for those who have daka. It means they can renew it, continue working, continue to be protected and its very good news for people, young people who qualify who havent applied yet. Now, the Trump Administration did eliminate the dapa program, dapa which would have protected immigrant parents from deportation, but that was never implemented. The man killed in a Police Shootout at a washington, d. C. Area baseball field was carrying a list of names including that of the congressman he shot. Sources tell abc7 news a piece of paper in james hodgekinsons pocket listed a dozen members of congress. Investigators have not determined the purpose of that list. Congressman Steve Scalise remains in Critical Condition today. They also revealed scalise was very close to death when he was brought in wednesday morning. Lodge hodgekinson shot scalise in the ship when they were practicing for the congressional baseball game. Scalise suffered severe internal injuries. I have not counted but i would guess that there are hundreds of fragments, and usually theres more risk involved in trying to find and remove those fragments than benefit. Sticking in miami today, President Trump said congressman scalise took a bullet for all of us. Four other people were wound the in the shootout including two Police Officers, a lobbyist and congressional aide. The leader of isis may be dead. Let me give you a look at the projected air quality over the weekend. It is going to be moderate tomorrow, but in some locations like the inland east bay and santa clara valley, well have poor air quality sunday with this lingering heat wave. It looks like were going to have at least six days tomorrow through thursday of triple digit heat in our inland areas. The conversation continued. When a passenger asked if that would be taking advantage, the driver says this. I would get really drunk, too, and i cant be held responsible. Reporter the man who recorded the video he thought the driver crossed the line so he posted the video on facebook as a warning to women in san jose. He also complained to uber and said the company was very responsive. Uber released a statement to abc7 news that reads, the comments in this video are disturbing and do not represent our driverpartner community. This driver has been banned from uber. Thats good news to this uber user. Because it would make me extremely uncomfortable to know they were okay with somebody who spoke like that driving their car. Reporter this woman remains skeptical. I dont know what uber really does to ensure that their drivers are qualified, or that they are actually decent people.
