The coroner has not yet released the name of a 27yearold africanamerican woman shot and killed by San Francisco police yesterday. A memorial for the woman is growing at the shooting scene in the bay view district. Police say the woman was driving a stolen car yesterday on elmira street when the officers first approached. As she tried to get away, she hit a parked truck near the end of the dead end street, then moved the vehicle back and forth. Thats when one officer fired a shot and she died at the hospital. The sex scandal involving several Oakland Police officers cast a big shadow today over the Graduation Ceremony of new officers. Abc 7 news was at oaklands Scottish Rights Center as police chief sean went pinned badges on 44 recruits. The chief challenged the new officers to change the mind dsz set of a department thats had officers investigated for abuse of power. Police officers are not warriors fighting a war against crime. Reporter witnesses say they first saw smoke coming from a small building next to the old rubys restaurant which closed in 2013. Then the smoke got black. Then we seen the names just shot up from the end of the pier. Then it got bigger and bigger and then were like, whats going on . Reporter alfred suno was surfing with friends next to the pier as they watched flames spread to the vacant restaurant. The flames was like enormous. It was eerie. Black smoke coming over us. Reporter the fire fight a challenge, the 1800foot pier made of wood. Authorities also say a stand pipe similar to this on the pier which would have helped firefighters get water to the blaze failed, forcing firefighters to haul hose from street hydrants. Anytime we have a failure of stand pipe, then that delays the operation because we have to lay hose lines all the way down. Reporter Authorities Say fortunately eight fire boats from long beach, l. A. County fire and the Orange County sheriffs Harbor Patrol were already on the scene to help. Firefighters say it takes 90 minutes to knock down the fire. So far the cause is under investigation. While the restaurant and the bait shop are destroyed, residents say theyre grateful flames didnt completely destroy the popular pier. Im glad to see the pier but still its very sad. Reporter now, Authorities Say one firefighter suffered a dislocated shoulder fighting the blaze and had to be transported to the hospital. Again, the cause of this fire is under investigation engineers are out here checking the pier itself to make sure that it is structurally sound. A fire at the Worlds Largest solar thermal power plant located in the Mojave Desert was likely caused by miss aligned marors. The mirrors focus sun beams on the wrong part of the plants tower igniting some electrical cables. The fire also scorched some theme ducts and water pipes. While many schools have a zero tolerance policy for bullies, a report says this policy does not work. Ruby bridges was 6 years old and the first black to attend an allwhite school in new orleans accompanied by federal marshals. She remembers being taunted and bullied by adult white women, an ordeal described in her book through my eyes. Its used in schools across the country to address bullying. Just two weeks ago she had a conversation with a young boy about what he would do if he saw a child needing help who had bullied him. Think about if that was you down there and you needed help. Would you want that person to help you . And he said, yes, i would. And i said, well, if you give them another chance, then maybe, just maybe you might change the way hes been treating other people, including you.
