Swimmer brock turner who was accused of sexually assaulting an unconscious victim. Its really important for victims to hear a different message which is please come forward and you will get justice. Reporter we have to respect the victims, you know, the right to be confidential and process, you know, whether, you know, she wants to come forward and provide additional information. I think its a real like fine line of making sure the victim feels safe and also ensuring future safety on campus. At stanford university, melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. Coincidentally stanford is launching a new program this week to talk about sex and consent. All 1,700 first year and transfer students are required to attend. Its called beyond sex ed, consent and sexuality at stanford. The 90minute program will feature personal stories from current students. This is designed to help students improve communication about boundaries and consent. A sevenmonth investigation has uncovered a statewide child porn ring based out of San Francisco. Police made three arrests in the city with two of the suspects gary weight and daniaca moray. The arrests led to the arrest of two other men, both accused of possessing child porn if i. Five people were killed in separate attacks over the weekend. The string of homicides began friday morning. Four of the victims died after being shot and two people survived and one of the shootings in soma and no arrests have been made in the shooting. A woman died after being stabbed at california and pierce streets yesterday afternoon and investigators say she was in her 60s. Police have captured a 59yearold man who is suspected ave tacking her. We often see lots of accidents when it rains after several dry months and that appears to be the case in the north bay. The Highway Patrol believes slick pavement might have been a factor when a big rig overturned. It dumped sand and gravel on to river road in forestville. Nobody was hurt. The chp is investigating whether this suv which burst into flames in oakland was stolen. This was the scene at 106th avenue and longfellow after a chase overnight that wowed its way through hayward and castro valley. They initially tried to pull over the car because it didnt have any license plates. Spike strips eventually forced the driver to stop and he was arrested. When firefighters go to a blaze like this one two days ago they have res pir raters and oxygen tanks to help them breathe. There can be other risks for cancer, the clothes firefighters rare. More now on a simple strategy to help. Reporter firefighters are not only exposed to flames but they are also exposed to burning chemicals and melting plastics when they head into those fires, and it used to be that firefighters wouldnt wash their gear actually as a sense of pride, but not anymore. At a fire in the Mission District this weekend we noticed crew members doing something odd after putting the fire out. They were sprying each other down. That little action is a big change for the San Francisco fire department. Lieutenant Jonathan Baxter says he remembers his very first call years ago. I wore that same set of turnouts for a number of days completely dirty as a badge of honor. Reporter spraying off the soot on scene is the first step in whats now a massive effort by the department to prevent alarming rates of cancer. On average i believe its 8 to 12 years a firefighter lives after they retire and probably 70 of those pass away from jobrelated cancers. Reporter Thomas Oconnor says the department is actually leading the nation in trying to detect and prevent cancer. The department has participated in National Studies that have linked their health and their working environments. At fire station 7 dirty equipment on the way to a call is no longer cool. They ask that they go put on a clean set of turnouts and they dont expose us to the rest of the contaminants in the turnouts. Reporter after a fire crews will get back to the station and wash their clothes in a special machine, or they will package them up and send them off to a company for special treatment. These clothes were actually worn by crew members who were working that mission fire this weekend. For firefighters clean equipment may lead to better health. A battle over a neighborhood Swimming Pool is shaping up in lafayette. The City Planning Commission will have to make a decision about the noise generated by swim teams, meets and parties. Abc 7 News ReporterLeslie Brinkley is live at Sun Valley Swim Club with the story. The future of this community Swimming Pool is whats at stake tonight. Its been here tonight since 1954. As you can see, there are plenty of still very enthusiastic young swimmers here. Neighbors though are complaining of loud mubsic coming from the pool. Swim Club Representatives say they are just trying to stay fun and competitive as more young families move in. Its peaceful when neighborhood judith wolf swims lapse in the morning this time of year but not so much in the summer at sun valley pool. Concerned over noise and trash and alcohol and crowding in the pool, et cetera. They started ramping up music, so then they started having amplified music and then later and later hours and late night parties. Reporter neighbors dont mind the bells and buzzers from the swim meets. They are worried about the music and the crowds. This neighborhood swim club had only 70 swimmers back in the 90s and now its at at 215 with a deep waiting list. Complaints got the city of lafayette involved. Because of the changes that have been made both in terms of amplified music and the number of members it was appropriate for the pool to now apply for a land use permit. Reporter this Code Enforcement officer is recommending fewer meets, no amplified music and limits on pool parties. And if we have to reduce our swim team, we have all these restrictions, were going to lose members to other pools. The other places have amplified music and just a more fun environment for their children, they will choose to go there. Reporter they argue that could affect the pools financial ability to stay afloat. The city is suggesting allowing lap swimming year round to help make up for any shortfall. And we should be able to reach a balance because the pool has been year for 50 years. Its a wonderful addition to the neighborhood. I love swimming here. I love listening to the kids. Abc 7 News Reporter david louie got to board an aircraft at the moffatt field to learn about a big step towards cleanup. Packed with surveillance equipment the c130 provides very cramped work space for the team of 20. They have already been out once this week to count, measure and create imagery of the discarded fishing nets, buoys and other waste that has left a debris field stretching across the pacific. Now that people are able to see it there and that its also more than we expected really understand why its so urgent to clean it up. Reporter until now the problem has been determining how much debris was needing to be pick up. A new radar system called lidar will help determining what needs to be picked up. We can see the 3d objects and we can help convert the number of objects and also the estimated mass of these objects. Reporter youre looking at the sensors that are part of the lidar system. Thats what helps the researchers create a 3d image of the objects they are seeing on the oceans suffer face. The 3d images will be ready in a couple of months augmenting surface photos like these taken yesterday from the c130. The additional input will help engineers on a boom and Collection System to be deployed a year from now. Some young scientists invited to see the plane have a new role model. A number of homeless living on oaklands streets have been on the rise and their tents can be found downturn and in both in west and east oakland. Oaklands mayor is pledging help and a place to stay. We then are goings to help move these communities off of the streets and into winter shelters and in some cases a sanctioned encampment area that were working on identifying. The city council is expected to take up the growing problem this week. Oaklands fruitvale district is in the spotlight. A new Citywide Campaign was launched to promote neighborhoods across the city. The fruitvale was the first to get the shoutout from city hall. Downtown oakland is already known to foodies for its restaurant scene and the city hopes that interest will spread. The afternoon commute out of San Francisco from 101 to Treasure Island is now the worst spot of a freeway congestion in the bay area. The metropolitan transportation area has released its top 50 worst congested list. It takes a full hour to cover that six mile stretch. Here are the top three from San Francisco on 101 to Treasure Island, as we mentioned. Number two, used to be the worst. Now, target already pulled items from well spun off its shelves after a probe found the products were made of nonegyptian cotton between august of 2014 and july 2016. The statewide plan on plastic bags could be reversed by the voters. Plastic Bag Companies have put two measures on this years november 8th ballot. One aims to overturn the statewide ban on plastic carry out bags and another directs the current tencent bag fees to Fund Environmental projects. Really isnt any money because the bag charge, the tencent charge pays for the cost of the paper bags so the Grocery Stores use that to cover the cost of the bags so there is no extra money. Governor brown and some members of the legislature have come out and endorsed a yes vote to keep the current ban on plastic bags.
