Trump doesnt have a license to blackmail universities. Hes the president , not a dictator and his empty threats. We do not condone violence but threatening stripping the university of federal funds is foolish. Laura anthony has more. Reporter hi, kristen. Campus officials not really taking the bait on the president s tweet. In fact, they are more focused on assessing the damage, like this, left behind from last nights protests and they are continuing the investigation into the demonstration they say was turned ugly by a group of outside agitators. One day after destructive and sometimes violent protests erupted on the campus of uc berkeley, the administration is defending its response. That is mostly allowing events to play out on sprawl plaza, including a large fire, fireworks and fights in the crowd with police stationed on the second floor balcony. You may have seen a few up on the balcony, but most of them were actually on the stair line for use if it was necessary and they did come out at some point but we had to retreat into the building for our officers safety as well as for the safety of others. Reporter at one point, a group of officers did go into the crowd to pull a man to safety. No secondguessing at all. We think our Police Department was completely prepared. Something unprecedented happened here last night. People came here in military uniforms, used paramilitary tactics. Reporter the melee almost immediately after agitators infiltrated a peaceful group of demonstrators. In light of the violence, President Donald Trump is threatening to suspend federal funding for uc berkeley. All we can say is that federal funds allocated to universities are used for two purposes. One is to provide financal aid for lowincome students and the other is to support the basic research that fuels californians and the nations economy. Reporter and as you can see, were back live here where we were standing last night when all of this went down. It looks like things have returned pretty much back to normal. In the meantime, the investigation does continue into last nights activity. Police tell us they have made three arrests total. One last night, two today. But they will be reviewing video. All of that video taken last night to see if they can make more arrests of the people who committ committed crimes out here. Laura anthony, abc7 news. Laura, thank you very much. She was right in the thick of it last night. According to data from the latest fiscal year, uc berkeley receives 370 million from the federal government for research. Its a significant amount of money. The university of california system as a whole receives nearly 8. 5 billion in federal support for research, health care and education. One example of that funding is a Berkeley Research lab run by justin. The team is getting 3. 6 million from the National Institutes of health to build a better Infectious Disease surveillance system. The lab that berkeley runs is also cashing in announcing its getting 4. 6 million from the feds for genomic research. And as we said, the university is promising a full investigation. His place on the council and initial silence on the president s executive action on immigration prompted a deleteuber campaign. In response, the company established a 3 million legal fee or fund, i should say, for its drivers. Other bay area ceos and employees are taking a firm stand, too, in opposing the president S Immigration and travel ban. One of them grew out of a tech center in sunnyvale. David louie was there when employees staged a walkout this morning. Reporter tech workers are known for putting in long hours, seeming to live in a Silicon Valley bubble. But in this case they are walking out to make a statement about the immigration policies signed by mr. Trump. This started as a social grassroots kind of lunchtime conversation and really grew and gained momentum in the last day or two. And we were really inspired by google and their walkout and the way that their employees stood up to them. Reporter this is at the comcast innovation center. They walked out simultaneously with other comcast offices across the country. We want to make sure that all people are welcome and there should be no limitations and no racism and no xenophobia. That is what is being fostered by such executive orders. Reporter also coming from apple, facebook and uber who reportedly is drafting a letter to mr. Trump. Some of their executives met with him recently but it was not disclosed what they discussed. This country welcomed us, supported us and gave us the opportunity to thrive. I have a masters in clinical psychology. Reporter she joined a protest aimed at ubers ceo who stepped down from the president s Business Advisory council. Voices continue to be raised here in the Silicon Valley but will there ever be a respons from washington . In palo alto, david louie, abc7 news. Tonight, residents of an oakland homeless village put up last month by advocates and neighbors are looking for a new home. The city cleared out the village under the 580 and 980 freeways today. There were 18 health and safety and fire code violations. Leslie brinkley is live in oakland with that story. Leslie . Reporter kristen and dan, homeless advocates say an oasis of goodness that they built was torn down today but that village was built on public park land and had no permits. Shame, shame, shame. Those are homes. Those are homes. Reporter two weeks ago, west oakland neighbors and activists took pallets and plywood and built this park. They set up a wash station. The city wont come here and check it out but they are tearing it down when its helping people. How shameful is that . I never felt so much love for people when i was inside this park. They helped me. Reporter but today, 12 residents were back out on the street after crews dismantled the socalled village. The city found 18 health and safety violations and say theyve gotten a lot of complaints. We actually have a lease with cal trans to use this facility and operate it as a park and so were in violation of our agreement with cal trans. Nothing had permits. Yeah. What we see here is an exhibit of municipal code taking precedent over the housing crisis and human dignity. Reporter angry advocates tried to salvage what they could as a few dozen marched to demand answers. Officials told them there were beds available in the citys winter shelter for those displaced. Countywide, there are thousands more homeless choosing not to live in shelters like this man. You drive down the streets of oakland and every other street you find Homeless People everywhere. And just because they are tearing it down doesnt mean its not going to go up somewhere else. Reporter in oakland, leslie brinkley, abc7 news. Thats what the San Francisco board of supervisors are trying to get to the bottom of. As Elissa Harrington explains, blame is being pointed at a uc engineering professor. Reporter testifying in front of the board of supervisors about his role in getting the sinking Millennium Tower built. He was on the peer review board and gave the project a green light in a letter to the city back in 2006. I asked him if he had any concerns during that planning process. I did not. The work that was within my scope was going along very well. Our system is clearly broken. Reporter supervisor Aaron Peskins its not what was in the letter that was the problem. He reviewed another highrise project on tacoma and it was scrapped, considered too dangerous to build. He knew that there would be dewatering next door and didnt mention anything about it in his letter. He knew that there had been no geotechnical peer review but doesnt mention it in his letter. You would think that a professional like this would at least cover their behind a little bit. Reporter peskin questioned why he did not push the Planning Department for a geotechnical review. It really wasnt my place to demand that there be one. You know, i was hired under a specific scope and was operating under that scope. My biggest concern is an earthquake. Reporter pat dawson, who lives in the tower, confronted them asking why her home was built on soil instead of bed rock. He didnt take the opportunities. Reporter peskin calls this a systemic failure. You can pick up a cold or flu at the gym but some of the most common things that you pick up are skin infections. Reporter because they can thrive in the sweat left on equipment and on towels as well as the warm, moist areas, like pool decks.
