Video also played a role in a case against three San Jose Police officers convicted of hitting a construction worker 15 times with her batons. The lawyer for polynno posted it on youtube, claiming the rookie officers using Excessive Force against his client in 2015. Well, today a federal jury agreed and awarded polino 350 in damages. The City Attorneys Office is paying an additional 100,000 to avoid the risk of further damages in the final punitive phase of the trail. A Police Standoff that started late last night in San Francisco is finally over. The suspect is now in custody and the mans mother is dead. This happened at 15th and beaver streets. Melanie wood row is live with more on the story. Melanie . Reporter the standoff lasted more than 14 hours. We heard what may have been a flash bang at one point, but San Francisco police say there was no use of force by them. We have some video to show you. This all began last night when Police Officers received a call for shots fired at about 11 45 p. M. A male suspect who shot an elderly female. Sources tell abc 7 news that elderly female was his mother. She later died at the hospital. The suspect would not come out of the home for more than 14 hours. We saw hostage negotiators, a s. W. A. T. Team and other specialized units. People that live in the area were told to shelter in place. There was an Evacuation Center set up at Mckinley Elementary School at 14th and castro. Around 2 00 this afternoon, the suspect surrendered. Police say the suspect surrendered with a selfinflicted gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken to the hospital for treatment. Again, there was no use of force by San Francisco police. We do want always these cases to resolve without, you know, injury to anyone. Even the suspect. The unfortunate reality is thats what we have today. And so its the outcome is also good in that no one in the community is injured. Were making certain that theres no nothing of any hazardous nature in the home that may be harmful to communities. Reporter the shelter in place was lifted around 4 00 this afternoon. The man accused of shooting two Police Officers has died. There are reports the man got ahold of one of the officers guns. The officers were reporting to a breakin at an apartment complex early this morning. Police say there was a struggle, and the officers and the suspect were shot. The suspect later died. Police just said the two officers are now in stable condition. An officer on routine patrol spotted and arrested a man in connection with a string of suspicious fires in palo alto. Police say there have been no additional suspicious fires since Terry Lee Hill jr. Was arrested. Four fires broke out last friday between 2 00 and 5 30 a. M. Near the stanford shopping center. The 23yearold suspect was caught on surveillance, look at this, they released this grainy image, police say a car, a dumpster, a garage, and some plants were damaged in the fires. More fires to talk about. Firefighters are on the scene of a grass fire thats broken out northeast of napa. Sky 7 flew over the fire about an hour ago at atlas peak road. Thats near the silverado country club, and a cal fire plane was dumping retardant on the flames. Its burned up to three acres and it appears they have things under control. No structures are threatened and there are no evacuations. The owner of global wines captured this video just moments after it was started. The fire was putting up a lot of smoke visible throughout wine country. Fire crews will stay near highway 101 in geyserville for several hours after getting a handle on a number of fires that threatened homes today. A helicopter flew overhead dropping water on the flames. None of the homes burned and no injuries are reported. The fires started around 11 00 this morning, not far from the highway. Part of one southbound lane was shut down for a time, as the flames got close. Cal fire is investigating. A new report finds the infamous leaning Millennium Tower is earthquake safe, according to engineers commissioned by the city of San Francisco. Kate larson has been speaking with the city, the Building Developers and homeowners. Kate, lots of reaction to todays new information. Reporter thats right. The report seems like great news despite the leaning and sinking. The Millennium Tower can withstand a major earthquake. But some feel the report is a false sense of security, because it doesnt tell the whole story. Out today, a new engineering analysis that says the Millennium Tower is safe, in the event of a major 8. 0 magnitude earthquake. I think its superficial. Reporter not all of the homeowners agree with the report ordered by the city of San Francisco and based on the findings of another report commissioned by the developer, millennium partners. The report is only a snapshot of today. And it doesnt really predict the future health and safety of the building or the people in it. Reporter jerry bought his unit in 2008, and feels the report does not go far enough. The engineers point out the building has sunk 17 inches since construction started in 2006. Since 2010 has continued to sink one inch per year. Which the report points out is more than three times the anticipated amount of settlement over the life of the structure. The engineers also recommend continued monitoring of the Millennium Tower and reevaluation when the amount of longterm settlement has been confirmed. No one buys a building buys a unit in this building with an unexpected sinking and tilting of it. Its crazy to do Something Like that. Reporter to some unit owners, todays report brings relief. I think its wonderful. Reporter howard wayne has owned his unit since 2008. He hopes the new information will encourage banks to change policy and allow potential buyers to get a mortgage. I think its not worth anything if you cant get a loan against it. Reporter meanwhile today, the developer told us its focused on finding a fix. Changes are in the works for a San Francisco landmark, talking about the golden gate bridge. The bridge district took the first step today that will eventually lead to a major revamp of the toll plaza, an Engineering Firm was hired as a consultant on the project which will include a taller toll gantry that will span the lanes south of the toll booths. Officials say the upgrades are needed to modernize the Electronic Toll Collection system. They say no time line has been set for removing the old art deco style toll booths which will be replaced sim in the future. Governor vetoed a bill that would have made it illegal to release mylar balloons. Its already illegal to release balloons during a civic event or promotions. Last year they sparked wildfires in california. Hayward assemblyman bill kirk wanted to make it illegal to release them anywhere. The bad news is it continues after two years, but they will get some help, theyll be able to go out and fish tomorrow. Fishermen received a promise of federal Disaster Relief today. The question is, will it be too little, and will it be too late. In the middle of commercial salmon season, life has been very quiet around San Franciscos Fishermans Wharf. If you ask why, youll get an earful. Weve been hog tied. So far the salmon season has been rather catastrophic. Reporter its been frustrating, because the California Department of fish and wildlife opened waters south of here in a season where salmon gathered off the golden gate instead. Sports boats have brought in a bounty while commercial boats have just watched, angry at an agency that never adjusted to erroneous predictions. If we catch ten fish in a day, there are thousands that passed under the boat going to the migratory stream. S of midnight, the season begins some three and a half months late. Some boats have already stocked up and left, just in time to miss this appearance by state legislators, including representative jared huffman. He announced federal relief money for fisheries following a disastrous crab season two years ago and now he says he wants more for the salmon. But its only a portion of 20 million nationwide, just a fraction of what california fishermen need. Huffman blames washington politics. Now, a Class Action Lawsuit has been filed in San Francisco. The legal action claims those insurance payments forced many consumers to lose their cars, and left their credit reports damaged. The bank has avoided consumer lawsuits because of a forced arbitration clause in the contracts. The attorneys filing this claim say it should be allowed to go forward. The food and Drug Administration investigating fast food wrappers. New York Democratic senator Charles Schumer is asking the fda to look at the chemicals used in the wrappers. Temperatures warm, but not excessively hot. The relative humidity is rising. The winds are light. Hopefully under the favorable conditions, firefighters can wrap up that fire rather quickly.
