Heavy rain has flooded that area, forcing caltrans to close the intersection for the foreseeable future. Drivers are being asked to detour around the closure. Thats causing a significant traffic impact in that area. Even nba players arent immune to all the traffic were seeing out there tonight. Some members of the New York Knicks are running incredibly late for their game tonight at oracle arena against the warriors. This is video from just a few minutes ago of the team bus stuck in traffic along the embarcadero. The game is supposed to start at 7 30, so a little while ago, San Francisco police began escorting the bus through the city and onto the bridge. Some of the knicks players are already at oracle. Up to date if we hear anything about a later start time. Abc 7 News ReporterMelanie Woodrow joins us live from along the embarcadero. Melanie, you just saw the bus go by. Reporter you know, we absolutely did and as a new yorker, i understood that need for urgency, right, that bus was probably stuck in this traffic along the embarcadero. Once it had that police escort, we did see it go by rather quickly. Sort of amazing everything thats happened here today. This exact place im standing in earlier today was filled with watt p water. We began our day in the mission where the rain was less welcome than it has been here along the embarcader embarcadero. Around noon the king tides earn their name at pier 14. The highest ive ever seen it. My commute used to be on the embarcadero here. Reporter as water splashed on the sidewalk, people did whatever they could to keep dry. Christys english labs allison and em met were far from grumpy. This is their favorite weather. Love this morn anything. Reporter the rain was a bit less welcome here. This is what the stable cafe looked like two years ago when it flooded. We brought in temporary water filled plastic flood barriers, interlocking and water tight. Reporter after flooding five times since 2008, the owner made several modifications at the building including at the entrance. Well reimburse up to 30,000 for improvements on properties to keep the water out. Reporter at the embarcadero the water was up, over. Hopefully its the end of the drought. Reporter providing drivers with an added challenge for their evening commute. Even in the last few minutes the rain has slowed down just a little bit enough for me to let go of my umbrella out here. The traffic were watching is just a mess and the evening commute for many will be difficult. Live in San Francisco, Melanie Woodrow, abc 7 news. Thanks so much, melanie. Now because of ongoing longterm coastal erosion, the city of pacifica plans to demolish a cliffside apartment building, 310 esplanade was yellow tagged in january. The building must come down as soon as possible. Abc 7 News Reporter vick lee is live with the story tonight. Reporter well, its still pretty hellish here. Theres a fierce wind and rain pounding us on this bluff near the Pacific Ocean to my left. Now, behind me, that is 310 esplanade, the building thats going to be demolished this spring. Two apartment complexes on the other side of that building were torn down. So this is the third to go. It was a tough day for frosty and santa in pacifica. Strong winds and horizontal rain moved into the area by midmorning. The fear was a series of king tides and large swells would further deteriorate the fragile crumbling bluffs holding up the apartment complexion at 310 esplanade avenue. In january the city yellow tagged the building after stormdriven waves accelerated the erosion of the cliff. The city now says its noticed even more damage. Progressive deterioration, the sea block, and this is the reason we need to take action while we still can. Reporter the city says negotiations to force landlord miller to repair his property have gone nowhere since he filed for bankruptcy last year. Because of mr. Tongs failur to take responsibility for his property, and the serious threat that the Building Collapse poses to public safety, we are stepping in to demolish that structure. Reporter pacific to residents we spoke with had no objections. If its a safety thing, by all means i think its kind of got to be done. And those cliffs have receded approximately 20 feet. So theyre going to just keep going and we have to yeah, we have to understand that. Reporter not far along the same street is a house just barely hanging on the bluff at 528 esplanade. The city says this home, too, will be demolished. The deterioration of the cliff below has also worsened. The pounding of the waves carving out this cave which seemed to appear out of nowhere. A home like others here where the owner had a view to die for. No date has been set for the demolition and it will cost the city, were told, about 250,000. Were also told that theres very little state and federal money to cover these costs. Now, the city manager says theyll try to get the landlord to reimburse the city, but remember, he is bankrupt so dont count on it. Vick lee, abc 7 news. Thank you. Were still on storm watch as one of the strongest storms of the year rolls across the bay area. Heres a look at live doppler 7 tracking all that rain. Abc 7 News Reporter joins us with a look at the conditions there, look at the water, alyssa rrn standing in the shipping and receiving area of this warehouse in oakland, theres several inches of water but this is just the beginning of the problems here. Cars are having a hard time making their way through this flooding. Again, were on high street right off of 880 near the train tracks. And theres definitely about a good foot. There is a Police Officer out here. Theyre making sure that people pass through the area safely. And there is one of those signs that warns of flooding. But as you can see, its definitely causing some traffic here and thats just one of the problems that people need to watch out for when they are out on the roads tonight. Now, we are here in oakland where there has been significant rainfall over the past couple hours. I will say that its dying down from what it was just a little bit earlier. There was rain coming in sideways, it was coming down hard and nonstop. So thats why theres so much standing water in these places because if there was any sort of drain that was clogged, there were problems. Now, again, if you are coming through this area, in oakland off of i880 and high street, definitely go slow. Keep in mind, there is flooding and you might be slipping around a little bit and one other thing weve been seeing just standing here on the sidewalk where its dry, is that every time one of these cars goes by, of course, it creates a bit of a wave. So if you just happen to be walking around, keep that in mind as well. Reporting live in oakland, alyssa harrington, abc 7 news. All right, thank you. Contra costa county has a network of monitors tracking the runoff in creeks and canals tonight. This is what pine creek looked like today. But look at this. Boy, this was a day to use your windshield wipers. This is what it looked like on highway 101 near san rafael late this morning. Abc News ReporterJonathan Bloom captured this video hands free driving south along highway 101 near burlingame and joins us live from the San Francisco airport because its not just driving thats hard in this weather. Reporter if you think the roads are bad, look at the skies. Airport duty manager said this would last all day. They werent kidding. They updated us, 125 canceled flights so far today with the remainder of the flights due to the rain and wind you see here running 60 to 90 minutes behind schedule. Most travelers so far have been getting to where theyre going eventually. Getting rebooked on other flights. It turns out that was a very good thing for one particular group of old College Friends going to see one very specific movie. I flew in this morning, so rain or shine, were going to watch rogue one tonight. Reporter flying through rain is no obstacle. I am wearing a chewbacca onesie. Reporter is it waterproof . I have yet to find out, probably not. Reporter flying around planet earth delayed about two hours. Yes. Our connection in denver is probably skewed, too. Reporter bruce and Cathie Bailey were among countless travelers left waiting around after bad visibility prompted a Ground Delay Program from the faa. Much like metering lights going on to a freeway, eventually meters the traffic coming into sfo to match the weather condition. Reporter and if it seems worse than normal, well, thats because it is. Because of the wind direction that the storm is causing, weve been forced to reconfigure how we use our runways so we are taking off and landing in a different configuration than we normally do. Reporter delays are one thing, but the dozens of cancelations are due to an Airline Practice called cancel and combine. Designed to keep delays from getting worse. Up and down the west coast where there might be a flight every hour or half hour, and cancel one flight and combine it with the next one. In an effort to shrink their flight schedule. Reporter of course, smaller airports have it worse. Had a departing flight from redding this morning and it was canceled. All flights were canceled going out. Reporter determined to see her husband for the first time in months, marie split a car rental with another passenger and drove to sfo. Im here now. So im in time for my flight. However, airplanes here on earth cant go the speed of light like the spaceship to that galaxy, therefore the delays are expected to for the evening. They will be resolved and no problems expected for tomorrow. Thats incredibly important because its predicted to be one of the busiest days of the Holiday Travel season. At sfo, Jonathan Bloom, abc 7 news. Timing is everything, jonathan, thanks very much. Flood sirens have gone off tonight in san anelmo. Reporter this surprised everyone, they said if theres enough rain, this is the kind of stuff that happens and it did happen. Just moments ago, the police here finally opened up tunstead avenue. This is the main street has had flooded in the past and people are trying to get back. They were evacuating people, evacuating businesses. If you look over here, you see these flood gates have gone up in front of businesses. And sandbags. At one point today, the flood stage here is 13 feet, at one point today it was about one foot under flood stage. The good news now is the creek is receding. They are concerned, however, about more rain coming in here tonight. The ground is saturated. As the city as the town manager told us yesterday, just a few hours of this saturated water, it can happen again. We have no seen the storm drains pop here. Thats good news so far.
