At the Golden Gate Bridge, Jonathan Bloom, abc 7 news. Tomorrow at 9 00, abc 7 will air the first part of the series, when we rise. It tracks the rise of the gay movement in the early years. The crisis began with trying to identify an enemy that they simply could not see. For mike gorman, the early days of the aids crisis were like a detective story with an ominous plot. He was working with a Small Research team tracking a mysterious cancer outbreak. In San Francisco, most of the early cases were gay men who were diagnosed with this rare form of cancer. Not poison oak, not bruises. Young men with telltale lee sons on their face or body began turning up in the city, well before the discovery of a virus called hiv or a disease called aids. Gorman and the team wanted to know what the men had in common including where they lived. Castro is right here. Often going door to door, gorman and the team mapped the outbreak in neighborhoods like the castro, charting the edges of an eventual epicenter. It was called grid. Gorman, whose character is portrayed in the scene would help break the news to a stunned community. The red area is indicating where the gay men live. These blue points indicate opportunistic infections associated with grid. People were very scared and we were scared. I mean, it was very difficult. Because you kind of didnt know how this was transmitted. Within months, the fear would help ignite a political crisis. The city moved to close gay bath houses and gorman was swept up in the as they clashed how to respond. Turning their anger toward researchers and the health department. It was not an easy place to be. It was not an easy place to sit. Gorman is now a professor at san jose state. Despite the years of tension, he believes the communitys response holds valuable lessons for today. I think its very important to be politicized, be informed and to come together. Look at the map. Look at our neighborhood. This is ours. Now the findings of the ucs team were ucsf team were ee septemberly published in the journal lancet and were important to researchers all over the world.
