good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, july 23rd. let's start with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning to you, carolyn. here's a look at live doppler 7. it's wet and breezy. mist and drizzle from the golden gate bridge. we're also looking at it all the way down to san luis obispo. temperatures reflect the warm day yesterday over 100 degrees in our inland valleys. still quite mild this morning. 10 degrees above where we were yesterday. as you see the foggy golden gate, we're in the 50s from half moon bay to san francisco. 71 in san jose. and a sunny east side of san francisco, 65 in the north bay, santa rosa with 75. and livermore. once again, we'll see a huge range in temperatures from the 60s at the shoreline, upper 90s inland. we will have cooling today, anywhere from 10 to 10 degrees cooler in spots. >> sounds good, lisa. happening now, a big milestone for a big race. the 40th san francisco marathon is under way. ♪ >> five, four, three, two, one. >> the full marathon kicked off at 5:30 this morning. runners speeding past the starting line at mission street and the embarcadero. >> the biggest year, the biggest san francisco marathon we've ever had. when the first one ran, we had over 1,000. now we have 27,500 joining us. >> according to the marathon app, jorge maravilla was the first to cross the finish like. he completed it in less than 2:30. here's a look at the race course in green, these streets are closed until noon. the areas in pink show where traffic can cross, but that's only when there's a break in the race. breaking news in texas this morning. a horrible story. police in san antonio have found eight people dead in what they call a human trafficking case. investigators say the victims were in a tractor trailer parked in the stifling heat. dozens of people rescued from the truck, including children. were severely dehydrated and have been hospitalized. many in critical condition. police say the truck did not have any air conditioning. the driver is now in custody. surveillance video shows other drivers picking up people from the truck overnight. the u.s. department of homeland security is involved in the investigation. we're following developing news of a wreck that injured several people in san jose overnight. the crash happened around 12:15 this morning on i-280 near mclaughlin avenue. highway patrol officers say four people were taken to the hospital. two with life-threatening injuries. investigators have determined there were multiple collisions involving five cars. some pedestrians were also struck while trying to help. so far, it's unclear whether drugs or alcohol played a role. hayward police are investigating a homicide. officers responded to happyland avenue just before 8:30 last night, where they found a man suffering from a fatal stab wound. moments later, police took a man into custody. they say he's responsible for that crime. this is the third homicide in hayward this year. thousands of commuters are experiencing what's going to be a tough weekend routine for a while. because san francisco's muni metro subway is closed to test new trains. abc 7 news was at muni's embarcadero station yesterday as passengers were forced upstairs to market street to catch shuttle buses. those buses connect with light rail trains at west portal for the k, l, m, and t lines and at church street and duboce avenue for the j and n. riders shared their displeasure about it. >> i'm happy that we have new trains but for 20 more days of this -- more than 20, 30 days othis, it's ridiculous. >> been a frustrating kind of adventure with the whole thing. >> you're now looking at one of the trains being tested at west portal. muni wants to make sure they work properly with the subway's automatic control system. you can ride one of the new trains as early as september. >> in terms of reliability, great passenger information systems. it's exciting. >> muni will close the subway during evenings after rush hour ends and on weekends from now until mid-august. authorities have recovered the body of a missing boater who vanished near tomales bay last week. that's according to the family of 70-year-old charles friend. the beloved and longtime owner of the tomales bay oyster company. yesterday afternoon, the marin county sheriff recovered the body near where he disappeared tuesday. colleagues reported him missing after finding his empty boat. friend is remembered as a colorful and well-liked member of the tight knit tomales bay community. >> developing news from san jose where police are looking for the person who fired a shot at a drive-in movie theater last night. no one was hurt by the gunfire at the west wind capitol 6 drive-in. police found a gun casing but no victim nor a suspect. >> this morning, police in two east bay cities are investigating a series of smash and grab car thefts. 51 cars were broken into friday alone. abc 7 news reporter leslie brinkley has our story from brentwood. >> the crime spree started when 17 cars lined up near the front door of this hampton inn in brentwood had their passenger windows smashed, some time before 3:00 a.m. friday. james bennett found his truck and his daughter's camaro were hit. >> they just smashed it open, and they took and opened these. they opened this. they opened this. and they absolutely ransacked every bit of it. okay. and when they couldn't find anything, they just went to the next car and did the same thing. >> a desk clerk heard a car alarm and called police. unfortunately, there were no surveillance cameras at all up at this hotel, trained on the parking lot. across the way is an auto supply store. police intend to look at that video. >> they're getting cash what they can get, and then they steal the car. the lexus. >> police say a 1999 four-door lexus with a california liceant place number 4jpx560 was stolen from the hotel and driven to livermore. by 4:30 a.m., livermore police were inundated with 911 calls about car alarms going off in apartment complexes. >> they located between the three streets, we located a grand total of 34 vehicles that had been burglarized. >> all 34 break-ins occurred in just 30 minutes. prompting livermore police to say they're looking for an out of town crew of three to four suspects. earlier this month, 13 cars were targeted on several san ramon cul-de-sacs near interstate 680. police offered a reminder. >> there is anything in view, try to hide it. lock it up, bring it inside. >> especially overnight. in brentwood, i'm leslie brinkley, abc 7 news. the family of a missing man is on a mission to make what they consider a dangerous stretch of coastal highway safer. richard moss disappeared just before memorial day in a search for him is happening near montero state beach. demonstrators were at that beach yesterday, calling for more safety barriers along highway 1. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard has our story from pacifica. >> reporter: this group of demonstrators standing along highway 1 near montero state beach was hard to miss. and that was the point. >> just being out here today, we have a lot of visibility. >> this group led by dan moss wants more safety barriers built on this stretch. barriers which may have saved the life of dan's son richard moss who vanished while driving to work on may 25th. his body was never found. a tire believed to be from his car was located off the side of this cliff last week. >> there could be 82 reasons why richard's car crashed and went over the edge. i don't know what they are. it doesn't matter because if there was a barrier there, he would have had to get himself a new car, maybe go to the hospital. but the result is death. >> she basically went over the cliff. >> 20-year-old rose died one night last september when her car crashed off highway one. >> i definitely believe to a high extent her life could have been saved as well as richard's. >> glenda's fiance died in 2004 before the birth of their child. >> feel like this is going to be an issue until we sort of get a response from caltrans. >> caltrans says it's reviewing the matter. it's not just a matter of we can set up barriers overnight with no preparation. there's a lot, even with temporary barriers still procedures you have to follow. >> until permanent barriers are built, this group wants to see temporary guardrails put up as soon as possible. well, is this typical july weather? >> it is. we're going to add in a few more clouds and some tropical moisture coming our way, but we have the heat in the east bay valleys. fog at the coast, and looking at a 40-degree spread. that's typical. 62 in the city. how about 75 in livermore. so another very warm day. but we are cooler anywhere from 2 to about 12 degrees cooler. i'll tell you where and what to expect for your monday and the week ahead, which is call 811. keep yourself safe. crews are starting to turn the corner on the largest wildfire in california, just outside yosemite. containment at the detwiler fire is up to 40% this morning. the fire has burned about 76,000 acres and destroyed more than 100 buildings. more evacuation orders were lifted yesterday. flames came very close to homes in san bernardino county after a wildfire broke out in highland yesterday afternoon. firefighters moved quickly on the ground and in the air, stopping that fire before it reached any structures. another blaze broke out a few miles away. firefighters face 90 degree heat, battling both blazes. investigators have not said what sparked the fires. the search is on for a missing puppy in san rafael. the milo foundation shared a picture of this spaniel/beagle mix on facebook yesterday. they say the puppy named may disappeared at an adaupshz event. she's 11 weeks old, weighs less than 30 pounds. she is microchips. the foundation is offering a reward for her safe return. we've got their contact information on our website at abc7news.com. >> residents of a phoenix suburb have banded together to patrol their neighborhoods at night on the lookout for scorpions. members of this neighborhood group in surprise, arizona, are armed with spider spray and black lights. the nightly routine can take out anywhere from 30 to 300 scorpions each night. volunteers have mapped out areas they say need to be tended to by the exterminators. >> i realized how many people were havingscorpions. we thought something needs to be done, so why not us? >> and they say they're getting a lot of exercise as well. did you know scorpion stings are typically harmless, but some species can inflict fatal stings. many kids don't want to hear the words "back to school" in july, but some youngsters are now equipped for the inevitable. abc7 news was at san mateo medical center yesterday, where 120 kids got free backpacks loaded with school supplies. the golden gate harley davidson owners group organized the giveaway. >> as you can see, it makes a lot of people happy. we're really happy to do this. we're going to continue to do this as long as we can. local businesses donated cash, backpacks and supplies for the kids. happening today, two world class soccer teams will face off at levi's stadium. manchester united and real madrid are competing for the international champions cup. the powerhouse teams are drawing big crowds to santa clara. at least 60,000 tickets have been sold. hotels near levi's stadium are sold out. you can watch the game live on our sister network, espn. it begins at 2:00 this afternoon. happening today, a chance to enjoy free live music at the waterfront. the san francisco symphony is performing at noon at pier 27. they'll play a variety of symphonic favorites including songs from "west side story." it is the third year the symphony is hosting this free concert. families are encouraged to pack a picnic and hang out on the lawn. good morning, everyone. sunday morning. we have low clouds and fog banked up along the shoreline, and we're also looking at other cloud cover moving into the san joaquin and sacramento valley. we'll get to that in a moment. i want to show you what's going on. a big dome of high pressure responsible for our heat, but also looking at a system off the northwest coast. this is all bringing up some thunderstorm activity or potential, anyway, maybe dry lightning, from the northern sierra and also high clouds tomorrow for us. so we'll keep that in mind. it's going to aid in our cooling, but in the tropics, boy, we have another tropical storm, two of them. hillary and irwin. they're both expected to develop into hurricanes. 45 miles per hour, hillary to the northwest, northwest as well as irwin. as we put this in motion, you'll notice they're continuing to strengthen in the next 48 hours. category 2 for hillary, and then a category 1 for irwin. then they weaken and head on that same track, which is in and around the hawaiian islands. we'll continue to watch it for you. mt. tam, watching this beautiful marine layer throughout the morning hours. 58 in the city. 67 in oakland. so you get, oh, maybe a half mile away from the coast, and you feel the warmup. 69 in mountain view, it will be cooler today for most of you. 54 in half moon bay. but it's all about how much cooler. right? here's our east bay hills camera where you can see all the sunshine. 67 in santa rosa. you have come up quickly. 70 in napa. mid 70s for livermore, fairfield. 71 in concord. we will have a little bit of sunshine here from time to time. but not going to make it much out of the low to mid 60s. so hot inland, cool at the coast. wide range this afternoon. much cooler tomorrow. the system i showed you in the northwest will pronounce our onshow flow and marine layer. it's going to get deeper so cooler monday, tuesday, wednesday. today, san jose, upper 80s. then beyond that, more warmth again. your hour-by-hour forecast shows the fog is not going to venture too far away from the shoreline. partly sunny, but look how quickly it pushes back tomorrow morning, i should say pushes inland for mist and drizzle and slow clearing for monday and tuesday. peeks of sun today with mid 60s from half moon bay and today, we're looking at more warmth near 90, san jose. but you will be about 2 degrees cooler, peninsula, anywhere from 2 to 5 degrees cooler here. you'll feel that sea breeze. upper 70s, san mateo. 70 in san francisco. but this is where you're really going to feel the cooling. that southerly surge bringing temperatures out of the upper 90s for santa rosa, calistoga, and into the 80s, east bay. you, too, will notice temperatures a little more comfortable. how about upper 70s for oakland, and you're still in the upper 80s around newark. warm day there, but even so, i think we'll be out of the triple digits in concord today. 97 there. you download our accuweather app and track your temperatures hour by hour, day by day. it's free and the accuweather seven-day forecast showing today is the last very, very hot day, but we always have to worry about maybe dry lightning and starting fires around here. so we'll keep that in mind as we look forward to perhaps the cooler weather or hopefully you're going to like the cooler weather before it warms up soon be a new world record. this morning, an american couple is fighting with a mexican cullal over the feat of their newborn son. the mother went into labor several weeks early while on vacation. now the family claims the hospital refused to help them or release the baby until they h d handed over tens of thousands of dollars. abc news reporter marcie gonzalez has the story. >> including one for $4,000 just for the parents to see their son. >> we realized the gouging that was being done. >> the family calling it extortion, saying the hospital refused to take their health insurance and threatened to stop treating beckham unless the bills totaling about $30,000 were paid in full. >> they were threatening literally to put him on the streets, a baby that's in an incubator. strong arm tactics. >> the hospital disputes the family's claim, saying they never threatened to stop caring for the newborn or delay his release. adding, quote, we didn't care about the money. but the family says with help, they scraped together the $30,000, plus $18,000 for an air ambulance to take baby beckham to a hospital in indiana. >> i have just seen a picture and i love him around. >> where he's now being cared for close to home. his grandparents thankful for donations as well as the state department and the local congressman who made the transfer possible. they wouldn't say much about his health other than he's slowly progressing. >> a festival in chicago dedicated to the game pokemon go, did not go quite as planned. die-hard fans flocked to the windy city from all over the world for pokemon go fest. but bad cell reception and several problems early on meant nobody could actually play the game. after the ceo of niantdic was booed off the stage, the company apologized, refunded players the $20 admission tickets and gave them $100 in poke coins to use in the game. >> take a look at this magnificent sight in northeastern france. 433 hot air balloons were launched as part of the air balloons festival. they're meant to set a world record for the most balloons launched all at once. the event has taken place every year since 1989. and is considered the largest hot air balloon event on the continent. a sebastopol whiskey mak whw is using music to see if can make the whiskey more flavful. >> we have been performing an experience for a while to see if sound vibrations will affect the maturation of whiskey in a barrel. >> the spirits works distillery owner teamo marshall showing us what he's doing with a batch of music infused whiskeys. each cask has a different sweatshirt because it is going to be cool. get partial clearing. here is santa cruz where you reached 80 yesterday. partial sun today. back in the 70s. 58 in the city. 71 in san jose. 69 in gilroy. 55 with quarter-mile visibility. half moon bay, nice and sunny for you, and emeryville, you'll cool off a bit today. 68 in novato and santa rosa, with 77 by the delta. livermore already at 75. you folks in our inland east bay, some of you ten degrees warmer than yesterday at this hour. and look at the hole in the overcast from the sutro camera. low skiths coastside to lower 70s inland, but before we get there, we have to deal with fog and chilly temperatures for a lot of you living by the shoreline and around the bay. a quick warmup on the way, last day of excessive heat. i'll explain in my seven-day forecast coming up. >> thank you. happening now, thousands of runners heading for the finish line in the san francisco marathon. this year's race is the biggest one yet, with more than 27,000 participants. jorge marrivilla and devon mcmahon are the first male and female runners to finish the marathon. they win round-trip tickets to paris. here's a map of the race course if you're going out in the city this morning, prepare to take a detour. the streets highlighted in green are closed until noon. traffic can cross the areas in pink when there's a break in the race. >> a horrifying discovery in a walmart parking lot in san antonio, texas, this morning. authorities found an 18-wheeler with eight people dead, many more in serious or critical condition. that truck had no air conditioning. temperatures were in the triple digits. abc news reporter kenneth has more on this developing story. >> reporter: overnight, police in san antonio say they found at least 30 people inside a tractor trailer in a walmart parking lot. alert employees called 911 after they spotted people spilling out of the truck, desperate for water. inside, a horrific discovery. eight people dead. first responders say 17 were pulled out and transported with life-threatening injuries. the rest, less critical. all of the victims suffering from heat-related illnesses like heat stroke and dehydration. the majority of them, adults in their 20s and 30s. but there were at least two young children. >> looking at human trafficking, crime this evening. department of homeland security is involved. they're working with us. homicide will work with them to determine the origin of this horrific tragedy. >> san antonio police say this morning they do not know where the truck came from or where it was going, but the driver has been taken into custody. they have also not confirmed the nationalities of the victims but i.c.e. is now a part of the investigation and police are searching for people who ran from the truck into the nearby woods. kenneth moten, abc news, washington. a tough firefight in massachusetts this morning. take a look at this. eight-alarm fire in a city west of boston. police say the fire broke out at an apartment complex under construction. high winds spread the flames to nearby buildings and littered ash all over the streets. five buildings were destroyed. residents in the area including a senior housing complex have been evacuated. officials say it's too early to determine the cause of the fire. so far, no injuries have been reported. this morning, president trump is facing a tricky choice after congressional leaders cut a deal to slap sanctions on russia, punishing that country for meddling in our elections. the administration is against the legislation, so will mr. trump sign the bill, which has overwhelmingly bipartisan support? abc news reporter david wroilri has the details. >> in a ceremony full of pomp and naval tradition -- >> ships company, tangz. >> president trump sought to highlight his efforts to make the u.s. military bigger, better, and stronger. >> american steel and american hands have constructed a 100,000 ton message to the world. >> trump made no mention of the fact that the uss gerald ford came in late and overbudget by nearly $3 billion. 25%. though he has been critical of those cost overruns before. on this occasion, he asked for the sailors' help in passing a new budget that calls for an extra $74 billion in military spending over two years. >> so call that congressman and call that senator and make sure you get it. >> and by the way, you can also call those senators to make sure you get health care. >> the commander in chief appearing to order men and women in uniform to support him politically. that's a break with tradition. congress is not making it easy for trump. adopting parliamentary rules that will require 60 votes on major portions of the republican health care bill. >> the senate and house also agreeing saturday to force the white house to get their approval before easing russian sanctions. a provision the administration has lobbied against. as trump's son-in-law jared kushner heads to capitol hill this week to be interviewed behind closed doors in the russia probe, the president pointedly asserted on twitter that all agree the u.s. president has the complete power to pardon. trump insists he's not even thinking about doing that because he insists the only crime so far is leaks against us. david wright, abc news, washington. police in louisiana are trying to figure out what happened to a wife of a fire chief. her body was found in the burned out remains of the couple's home, but it was not the fire that killed her. abc news reporter eva pilgrim is on the story. >> reporter: a louisiana mystery heating up. a fire chief's wife dead, killed in what looked like a tragic house fire. but new information now showing it wasn't the fire that killed her. >> i can't imagine it. i can't fathom it. i can't put it into words. >> reporter: for a week, most assumed 49-year-old nanette died in the fire that destroyed her home outside of new orleans. but the coroner making a bombshell announcement during her memorial service friday evening. >> we got the information as everybody else did. >> the autopsy revealing a gunshot wound. the coroner not giving a cause of death but concluding her death was not caused by the fire. the sheriff's office investigating at this time, not calling the incident a homicide or saying if there are any suspects. >> the likelihood that this is a suicide, i think, is reasonably low. the fire was set to cover up a homicide. >> her husband, battalion chief, was reportedly at work when the fire call came in around 2:30 friday, july 14th. >> typically, if you have someone shot and then a house set on fire, it's not a stranger. it's somebody in her life. >> for now, this community gathering around her husband. >> we're going to do the same thing we have been doing, we're going to rally around our brother in his typhof grief. >> as they wait to find out what really happened to nanette. eva pilgrim, abc news, blunsteen won the marquee no limit texas hold 'em event in texas. the 25-year-old is a regular on online poker sites in new jersey where online gambling is legal. he had never played in the world series before. more than 7,000 players entered the tournament this year. i think i know that guy. i think maybe that's my brother from another mother. >> a friend of yours. >> yeah, he's got $8 million, he's definitely my friend. >> okay. well, the fog is your friend this morning because we're looking at that cooling, not only around the bay but even inland. you're going to come down a few degrees today at the coast. wow, kind of extreme. yeah, a lot of gray sky and mist there. we're in the upper 50s in the city. 70 in hayward. 78 in brentwood. we'll look for the wide range today. and then below average temperatures tomorrow. no more 90s. we'll talk about it coming up. >> thank you, lisa. >> always ahead, the giants and padres needed extra innings for the second game in a row. the san francisco got a much needed victory. we've got the highlights coming up in sports. to avoid being swept in new york. they take on the mets in citi field in just a short time. the giants will try to gain a split of their four-game series with the padres, first pitch, 1:05 this afternoon at at&t park. >> yesterday, the giants and padres played extra innings for the second time in 24 hours. but this time, san francisco prevailed. here's anthony flores with the highlights in this morning's sports. >> good morning, everyone. well, it was worth the wait with one swing of the bat, nick hunley sets off a giant celebration in a 12-hour marathon against the padres. that's a cool way to hang out at the ballpark. matt more allowed four runs in six innings. tonof the fourth, the pitcher, perdomo, with a drive into triples alley. two runs score and the padres lead 4-1. the giants answer in their half. eduardo nunez tied it with a based loaded two-out singling. two runs score. the game is knotted at 4-4. went to bonus ball. bottom 12 with a runner on second. hunley with a long single to left. that scores the winning run. giants win it 5-4 in 12 innings. >> pablo sandoval said oops, my bad. the panda says he's learned his lesson and the giants believe he still has game. pablo signed a minor league contract with the giants, played third base in san jose. had a base hit and an rbi. sandoval made waves with his parting shots twarm his former teammates when he left for boston. he apologized for the comments and also said he wished he re-signed with the organization two years ago and he's looking forward to working his way back into the giants dugout. >> the past. it's in the past. give me another chance. i'm here. that's the most important thing. i'm here for a second chance, to show them that i'm ready for it. i just am looking forward to being back here and showing what i can do. >> the a's taking on the mets. first batter of the game, just the second pitch, and matt joyce hits a lead-off home run. his 13th of the season. now, oakland scores four runs off zach wheeler in the opening frame. and in the third, matt chapman, no doubt about this one. second deck. oakland has a 5-0 lead. over? not by a long shot. the mets score four runs in the sixth. then in the eighth, lucas duda ties it with a base hit. 5-5. bottom nine, castro on the mound. wilber flores sends it up, up, and away. that's a walk-off home run, the second of his career. mets with six unanswered runs. they beat the a's 6-5. >> gold cup soccer semifinals. usa taking on costa rica. 34-year-old clint dempsey comes into the game in the second half. he sets up joezy altidore's goal in the 72nd minute. dempsey ties landon donovan for u.s. men's national all-time scoring record with from 3 to 5 degrees cooler. but you're warmer this morning. yesterday, it was 100 degrees at the airport. below average, 86, and then 87 on tuesday. but then we will warm up come wednesday, and especially into thursday. but as we look outside, it is bright and sunny, and we have the flag blowing there from san francisco. so we'll look for a very comfortable day today here, with the cooling from the coast, around the bay, and just making it to some points inland. here's live doppler 7. talked about the fog on the coast, but do you notice what's going on to the east of us? we have smoke in the san joaquin valley, the sacramento valley, and also some thunderstorm potential. whether or not it's going to bring down rain, more like dry lightning. you can see it up here. a system off the coast, and we're looking at that return flow out around a ridge of high pressure, the same one that's keeping us so warm. so we're bringing in some subtropical moisture tomorrow in the form of high clouds. if you're heading to the sierra nevada or the southern sierra, you have more thunderstorm potential and the poor air quality. here's a look at our east bay hills camera. you can see the fog in the distance. so it's not going to be as hot today. 58 in the city. 67 in oakland. good morning, mountain view. 69 for you. low 70s in san jose and gilroy. and a chilly 55, half moon bay. nice and sunny here in emeryville with a slight cooldown. 70, santa rosa, napa, novato. a warmer start. you had 101 yesterday. at the livermore airport. today, we're coming down a few degrees. it's all thanks to a bit of marine air trying to bring us a little bit more of a sea breeze. but the high pressure ridge has to move out of town before we really cool down. that's going to happen tomorrow in response to that trough that i showed you off the coast of northern california. so hot inland, cool coast today. wide range of temperatures. much, much cooler, below average tomorrow into tuesday. it's not going to last, though. here is monday. look at the numbers in the upper 80s over the east bay hills. we have 60s and 70s close to the bay. really t has been comfortable all along the shoreline. it was a little warm yesterday across the bay. but look at wednesday. we're heating back up again. enjoy the next couple days. if you don't like the warmth, a hot one today in santa clara with 88 degrees, 2:00. 87, 4:00, for the big soccer match in the city today. upper 60s. a little breezy for the giants game. and we're looking at temperatures today ranging once again, 60s coast, upper 90s inland. but
