Hi carolyn, good morning everything. Live doppler 7hd is dry. But notice the east bay hills camera. We have a sparetheair day today with more neighborhoods under poor air quality. Its the 29th of the season. The coast, central bay and inland east bay you will notice the haze. South central bay and the Santa Clara Valley have healthier air today but we are looking for a rapid warmup again. Its still chilly with temperatures in the low 30s in our valleys. Around the bay in the mid40s as well as the coast, but by noontime plenty of 60s and perhaps some 70s by later on this afternoon. It will be another chilly evening and another day off tomorrow. Cooler weather ahead in the next several days. We will talk about that. Look how far out we have to go for some rain. Its all coming up in a few minutes. Carolyn. Lisa, thank you. Well, all the pregame hype is nearly over for todays nfc championship game. Kick off for the 49ersseahawks, 3 30 this afternoon in seattle. Fans were already out in force yesterday. A 49ers rally broke out on that citys streets. Deckedout in red and gold is waving quest for six towels. Fans making sure San Francisco is represented in the northwest. Muni today has replaced the historic fline street cars and cable cars with buses because muni wants to minimize the potential for trouble and damage during and after the game, regardless of the outcome. Yesterday a Good Samaritan came to the rescue of a woman who fell into the San Francisco bay. The tourist from taiwan fell near the bridge at torpedo bay. We have the details. It feels good. Feels very good. Aaron is talking about what it was like to help save the woman who fell off torpedo pier and into the bay near the golden gate bridge. He took off his shoes and jumps, joining another Good Samaritan who was already in the water. I could see from the top of the pier she was foaming at the mouth, she was taking in a lot of water. He was struggling and having difficulty holding her up by himself so thats when i made the decision to go. Shortly before 5 00 p. M. The woman from taiwan was on the pier taking photos. The Fire Department said she was taking photos when she backed up and tripped over the edge. He was among three people who jumped in to save her. I was able to get my left arm around the pylon and brace my feet up and hold her up with another arm and guys dropped a fish net down to help me. The coast guard and Fire Department arrived and performed cpr which got the woman breathing on her own again. He was here to watch the sunset with his brother from South Carolina who is visiting here for the first time. Im really proud of him. I told him he needs to get in there. He has medical experience and he saved the girl. Hes a man. He is a Software Salesman now, but before he was a lifeguard along the atlantic ocean. I did it for about five years, hilton head and myrtle beach. The water is a little bit colder out here. Hes made dozen of rescues before, but none quit like this. In San Francisco, john alston, abc7 news. This morning a man is in serious condition after a shooting in vallejo. It happened near santa clara and capital streets around 2 30 yesterday afternoon. Police found an unconscious man with a single gunshot wound. He was found behind the wheel of a black Nissan Maxima crashed into a parked car and a street sign. Friends and family are mourning a teenager killed in a light rail crash in san jose. Police are still trying to figure out just how it happened. Abc7 News Reporter Lisa Amin Gulezian has the latest. She was an amazing person. Whenever she went into a room, the room would light up. She was danica garcia, and danica loved to sing. The 14yearold was going to sing this song in front of the entire school at a rally. Instead, there was a moment of silence in her honor. Danica was riding her bike to Delmar High School at 7 30 friday morning. She was crossing the vta light rail tracks when the horrible s crash happened. One of the arms from the train wasnt going down so she was riding her bike and then all of a sudden she didnt see the train and she just hit the train. This witness was walking behind her moments before, but stopped. He heard the alarm bells. He said danica was wearing headphones at the time. She was really a great friend. Like she was always there for me. If i told her something was wrong, she would rush to me in just a moment. Our group of friends, we were so close. We are all like family to each other. She was honestly like one of our sisters. The Sheriffs Department is investigating whether the arm did, in fact, come down. In san jose, Lisa Amin Gulezian, abc7 news. In San Francisco, officials are investigating a collision between a rental car and a muni bus at north point and powell streets last night near fishermens wharf. The bus driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The people in the rental car were not hurt. Both vehicles suffered significant damage. All this hot, dry air has meant more wildfires here in the bay area. Flames broke out on a hillside in Half Moon Bay about 2 30 yesterday afternoon. The fire burned two and a half acres of grass. No structures were damaged. Crews have fully contained a wildfire in marin county, although the fire did not cuss any serious damage it was a tough one for firefighters to get to. Some of these fires, they are inaccessible and take a little time to get into. This one in particular had 15foot decadent bush that has no fire history back into the 40s. Due to this the crews had to actually cut lines into the fire, make a safety zone and then make the attack. Last week the marin county Fire Department brought back seasonal firefighters because of our dry conditions. Lisa, this high fire danger is something we really have to watch out for. For sure. Humidity down to the Single Digits in some of the valleys. Look at all that dirty air out there. Of course, a sparetheair day today. Temperatures maybe not many records, but still well above average. This morning firefighters in australia are trying to get an upper hand on the more than 90 wildfires burning across its most populous state. The fires are concentrated in new south whales, burning at least three homes in a village west of sydney. Officials say heat wave conditions last week intensified flames that destroyed 25 homes in neighboring victoria and south australia. At least 320,000 acres have burned. Authorities say those fires were sparked by lightning strikes. Fans of a popular daly city eatery will soon have to find another place to gather. Joes of west lake is set to close january 26th, a week from today. The restaurant, which some consider a peninsula institution, will close for remodeling after 57 years in business. It will be reopened by new owners in 2015, but there are no jobs for current employees. The newest bachelor on a hit show finds himself in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. His controversial marks are in the news. The former professional soccer player, the first latino bachelor, but now his comments to a reporter friday night are under fire. Listen. Just seconds later used the word pervert when talking about an allgay edition of the bachelor. People have their husband and wife, and with kids, thats how we are brought up. Now theres fathers having kids and its hard for me to understand that. And just this thing about gay people that it seems to me, you know, i dont know if im mistaken or not, i have a lot of friends, but they are more pervert in a sense and to me the show would be too strong, too hard to watch on tv. There will be a few high clouds maybe moving up from the south today around salinas, santa cruz. But overall its the dry, stable weather pattern that remains with us. The have you from mt. Tam a little hazy here. Temperatures around the bay, leading the pack is San Francisco at 53 degrees. Its 49 in oakland with still upper 30s around redwood city. Los gatos 43. Half moon bay. Seas building today. 55 degrees. Another mild one at the beach. South end of the beach, sunny skies in san jose with the coolest numbers in santa rosa. Warming in the 30s. Low 40s from napa to petaluma. Mid40s fairfield. 39 in concord and livermore out of those 30s. East bay hills camera and you see the hayes. This is what we are breathing. We have the spare the air day today. Mild to warm through tuesday tuesday. A bit of a wind shift, bringing temperatures down maybe a couple degrees through tuesday but overall its this dominant area of High Pressure that will shrink a little bit come wednesday and thursday as a weak system rides over it. But its not going to bring much change. We are looking at the air quality from the north bay, the coast, the central bay and our inland east bay to be poor with all the pollutants and a healthier Santa Clara Valley. The 29th spare the air day. Out at the airport hits sunny. You can see the haze there, as well. Upper 50s to near 60 is where we always should be at this time of year. But low 70s and upper 60s for 11oto 15 degrees above average again today. So the dominant ridge of High Pressure is anchored over the eastern pacific. Its not going anywhere. Its been here for months now. It will begin to shrink just a little bit. But that offshore flows allows for rapid warming and as a result temperatures will really not be capped into the 60s, more like about 70 today. But as we look through the rest of the month, you will notice that we are still dry right on through the end of the month. This takes us ten days out. The 29th. We will see perhaps trace amounts in the north coast, but the bulk of the state not looking at any rain. Then we get into february where we are hoping for a pattern shift then. But in the meantime, 68 today in San Francisco with 70 in concord. Look for clear lake in the upper 60s. And san mateo 69. The accuweather sevenday forecast, spare the air day today. Tomorrow look for more sunshine. 60s at the coast. A little cooler there. But otherwise upper 60s to near 70. On friday animal control officers got a call for an injured pig and arrived to find the piglet bleeding with a pretty bad eye injury. He was rushed to an Animal Shelter where everyone pitched in to help. To bring him back here, clean him up, bring him home and nurse him back to health and have coworkers you know, management that supports this and coworkers that want to help out, so its an awesome feeling. The pig, named captain winchester, did lose an eye, but hes getting used to that. The captain will recover in a foster home and then be put up for adoption. Some military moms of presenting quilts of valor to veterans. The Organization Began in 2003 as a token of appreciate for the veterans sacrifice and valor. All those beautiful quilts are sewn by volunteers comprised of military parents and volunteers from the community. A teenager forced out of school because of a serious injury is not missing a moment of class thanks to a robot. 15yearold Keith Griffin broke both his knees playing basketball last week. It allows the real keith to attend classes from home while his robotic counterpart fills in for him in the classroom. Keith can virtually raise his hand by hitting a button and triggering a light. It has nothing to do with persecuting people for their nontraditional orientation. In this country everybody is absolutely equal to anybody else. Irrespective of ones religion, sex, ethnicity or sexual orientation. Everyone is equal. So no concerns exist for people who come as athletes or visitors to the olympics. When asked about the recent terror attacks, he said next months Olympic Games will be safe. So many people are coming down with the flu that we are officially in a flu epidemic. Here in the Bay Area County Health Departments report a total of 23 flu deaths. The latest victims are two south bay women ages 52 and 62. Abc News Reporter Michelle Franson has a look at whats happening across the u. S. The flu is now widespread in 40 states. All indianapolis area hospitals will begin restricting visitors. Those with flulike symptoms, including a fever or cough, will not be allowed to visit patients. The biggest thing is not to go out and infect other people. The flu is taking a toll on the most vulnerable. In the past week alone, ten children have died. In tennessee 11yearold girl came down with h1n1, the most common strain of the flu virus right now. She died nearly 72 hours later. It was just more than her body could handle. It was just more than her heart could take. Savannah had not been vaccinated. Neither had this 13yearold in texas. She died of complications from the flu. But doctors say a flu shot is still the best defense. Even though doctors repeatedly advised people about the benefits of the vaccination, one in five parents say they dont give their children the flu vaccine for fear they will get the flu from it, which is a medical myth. Im ready. The flu season goes until april. Its not too late to get a flu shot. It is it usually take a full two weeks to get the complete immune protection from the vaccine. Some benefits start to kick in right away so sooner is better. And theres still plenty available. No big deal, right . Abc news, new york. Health Officials Say cases of whooping cough are on the rise across the state. The Sacramento Bee reports 20 more cases were reported in 2013 than 2012. Officials say one reason for the uptick is the increasing number of parents opting out of kids. Immunizations for their children. While they recognize the vaccine could have serious side effects in rare cases, they say whooping cough itself pose as greater risk and recommend children be vaccinated. There will be two special services at glad Memorial Church in San Francisco today honoring dr. Martin luther king, jr. Ahead of tomorrows holiday. Hundreds of expected to gagger to celebrate the civil rights leaders legacy. The events will feature poetry, music and words. Todays celebrations get underway at 9 00 and 11 00 this morning. They are free and open to the public. Dozens of people gathered yesterday outside San Franciscos bay view opera house to honor dr. King. The San Francisco chronicle reports john and Marshall Goldman have handed the city a check for 105,000. That covers all the expenses for the event. The goldmans say they have supported the Makeawish Foundation for some time. That foundation granted the november 15th party for fiveyearold leukemia patient miles scott. Reporter Landscape Architect leslie dean designed his front yard, but it was Mother Nature who tricked the plants into thinking it was spring already. Some of the flowers are months early. I wouldnt call them confused, i would say they are following their natural sense to grow when the weather is warm. Reporter geraniums normally bloom in summer. Lavender in springtime. Its even warm enough for the bees to be out in search of pollen. But what happens to tender shoots in the harsh winter returns . You might find the new growth is damaged with cold frost because it has not been hardened off yet for the winter season. It would normally have a growing season to harden those leaves off with some wax or just the thickness of the leaf. To the south in san jose. Valerie walked us around her garden which is used for Educational Programs for the California Native Garden foundation. The arugula is flowering, so is this plant which normally doesnt flower for another two or three months. A change back to normal Winter Weather could inflict economic damage. If we got a freeze, it means all those flowers are going to fall off. If there is any fruit that started to set, thats all going to fall off. So you will get, you know, lower production and prices will reflect it. Thats important to cherry growers. Such as deborah olson. They need to make sure the fruit trees know its still winter so they city dormant. What a lot of former are farmers are doing now is irrigating to go keep the soil as nice and cool as they can to ward off the heat in the daytime and we are just keeping our fingers crossed. Its all of that particulate matter that gathers near the surface underneath a dome of stagnate High Pressure. Heres mt. Tam. Temperatures are in the low 50s, San Francisco. A little wind here, but otherwise its the offshore flow. Midand upper 40s. Look at Half Moon Bay, its warmed up considerably into the upper 50s already. Heres a look at lake tahoe. Better air quality, but you know your temperature, as well, will climb through the 50s today. 35 in santa rosa. Still chilly there with concord come out of the 30s. 41 livermore. Petaluma, you were down to 38 this morning. Its 46 right now. Fairfield is at 44 degrees. Emeryville, hazy skies outside. The spare the air day today. The 29th of the season. Mild and warm the next couple days. We will cool off the middle of the week when a system will drop down from the north. It wont bring any rain, and behind the system the offshore flow kicks up again. Heres the outlook for the next several days. We stop at midweek. Still have the dome of High Pressure over here because the rain is well offshore. We go into thursday and we go into friday and it remains. Although its going to weaken a little bit, not much else is going to happen. In fact temperatures still in the 80s in Southern California today with the high surf advisory.
