We are ranking this storm system as a 2. Ill have more in a few minutes. And outside your window you have the sunshine. Earlier this morning we saw some pretty good showers move across the bay and even some embedded hail with that. So we are looking at anywhere from a halfinch to inch and a half of rain. We rank our storms from 1 to 5, 1 being the lightest and 5 being the strongest. And the winds will impact you again this evening. So not only do we have a wind advisory, we have a Flash Flood Watch this effect from 6 00 tonight until early tomorrow morning. So with the soil already saturated, anywhere from 1 to 1g in the Santa Cruz Mountains where they saw up to 6 inches of rain. We have a little bit of a break but the winds can create another round of problems tonight from 4 00 until 4 00 monday morning. And it still will be raining then. We will track it for you in just a few minutes. Lisa, thank you. Weve seen a number of storm related problems this weekend. A big mess in lafayette caused major frustration for residents trying to return to their homes. Alyssa harrington is live in lafayette with more this morning for us. Alyssa. People here have been without power since about 8 45 last night. Pg e crews are on the keep but they say this tree needs to be out of the road before they can restore power. That means that residents might not get their electricity back until 6 00 or 7 00 tonight. Its a long process to remove all this debris. Workers have to untangle powerlines from tree branches. About 63 households have been without power more than 8 hours. Yesterday a storm took down a large tree at the end of the street. It crashed into a power pole, snapping it, and brought down dangerous lines around 8 45 last night. Pg e crews quickly deactivated those lines. People who live up here have been in the dark since then. They are especially worried about an elderly couple trapped into their home by the tree. A huge tree came down, access was completely blocked. We cant get in or out of their garage, captain access their garage. People who live here captain get out, only by bicycle. Elderly neighbors with a caregiver. Its their tree that went down and broke through their fence. Its a pretty big mess. Quail ridge road, dead end in both directions. Thats the street that connects with this one here. A fire road has been opened up so that those residents can get in and out of the area. As you can see, debris covers the entire road. Both lanes of traffic. Neighbors tell me this tree didnt fall on any homes or injure anybody so despite the inconvenience they feel pretty lucky this morning. Live in lafayette, abc7 news. And those downed trees were a common occurrence in other parts of the bay area. And just how bad it was. The rain is making life missable. And they fall across two lanes of traffic on trial boulevard. Driver of this s. U. V. Tried to avoid it, but couldnt. When they turned to the left they hit the tree and they were stuck from behind. Neither driver was hurt, but this car had a lot of damage. In orinda heavy rain brought down the massive tree. The tree took out powerlines leaving nearly 80 families in the dark jack, this is mimi. Im out in front of the house. But they are prepared. They are communicating through walkietalkies and getting updates from one another. With the tree blocking the only road out of the neighborhood, getting information would otherwise be nearly impossible. How does it look to you . Well, i havent been out because the wires were clear across my bushes and my driveway and the firemen were here and they said dont come out of the house. We have cameras over the house and the fire going, and we are staying warm. Pg e called in extra crews to work on the downed lines. Parents figured out a way to manage the unpredictable situation. They started parking on the streets and walking through because thats the only way to get out and people are going out and getting their kids and stuff like that. Homeowners in miranda had their power restored early this morning. In walnut creek, abc7 news. In San Francisco the storms strong winds knocked down this tree at broadway and montgomery. A pacesser by took these photos. You can see part of it is blocking the righthand lane on broadway. Take a look at this huge tree that fell in front of the San Ramon Police department. It happened last night and blocked the entire entryway to the building. You can see crews cutting off some of the branches to help with the removal. Several police cars were parked outside of the building when it fell, but luckily no one was hurt. This map shows dozen of Power Outages throughout the bay area. At the height of the storm 56,000 customers were in the dark. Right now about 4800 remain without power. The company has more than 200 crews spread out across the region to handle the outages. The city of San Francisco is fighting water with more water. Yesterday abc7 news was at mission where the first time they set up the temporary plastic flood barriers filled with water. This is an area prone to flooding and the hope is they will protect the buildings. If it works, the city could order more for the next storm. Bay area coastal communities were hit with rain and galeforce winds. Abc7 News ReporterSergio Quintana has details from Half Moon Bay and pacifica. Sheets of rain and wind gusts took down tree branches in Half Moon Bay. Fire crews cleared a snapped tension line in one neighborhood and then the winds kicked up even more. Up to 48 Miles Per Hour in some places. Its caused Power Outages and triggered other emergencies. A large part of the harbor went dark, including an Indian Restaurant that had to finish the business day by flashlight. These two took shelter at the local seafood house where there was still power. I dont like the wind at all. I dont like the wind. In fact, one of our branches broke, which made me sad. We are doing fine. We have done a lot of work on the house the last year to make sure it was safe anyway. The two flags blowing in the wind at the harbor masters station are a couple of warnings for boaters. The first is a small craft weather advisory and the second is a Gale Force Wind warning. On the pier a windsock flapped, tarps were snapping, and this man had to lean into the wind to stay upright. Along the coast the wind really kicked up around sunset. I probably noticed the change around 3 00 or 4 00. Traffic along the coast was at a crawl at one point in the afternoon. By the wind while they walked the wind while they walked out of the market. Some sprinted with their umbrellas to keep away the rain. El nino storms have eaten away at the cliff side where these apartments are. The city issued an order to tear them down. Last month a different Property Owner demolished a building next door. The city is taking action on 320 esplanade because the owner of this building has declared bankruptcy and cant afford to tear it down himself. The demolition is set to start on tuesday. In western Sonoma County a large redwood tree destroyed a home, narrowly missing a woman inside. It happened around 6 00 last night. The homeowner was with her two dogs when she saw the tree falling and quickly ran outside. We are told she is staying with friends this morning. Heres a live look at sfo. Calm conditions for the time being, but it was a different story as the weather delayed more than 320 flights and san cancelled 70 others yesterday. There were 16 delays at the Oakland Airport and 13 at minetasan jose airport. There could be more problems later today so be sure to check with your airline before heading out the door. Happening today, there are chain controls from interstate 80 to 7 miles east of truckee. Highway 50 is also affected. You can see why. Theres on plenty of snowpack and drivers of taking it slow. And this is how the rain is going to play out. You see the clouds throughout the day. Some showers and then 3 00 in the north bay you have rain. By 8 00 weve got some downpours all around the bay area throughout the evening hours into your monday morning commute. So the rain keeps coming until we get a break by late in the day monday and into tuesday. Tuesday is the only dry day. Look at this, san carlos over an inch as well as hayward, Mountain View and san jose. Chris. Thanks, lisa. In uba county a woman died after a car she was in drove into a flooded area north of sacramento. The woman and man were inside the car. Fire chief said the car went around a caltrans truck that was trying to shut down the highway. They then drove through an underpass when their car became emerged. The water was 6 to 8 feet deep. All the water runs down to the lowest points. The pumps that normally keep is clear are pumping, but the ditch they pump into is full and the water is coming back over it right back down on to the highway. Authorities say the woman was under water for at least 15 minutes. The driver was able to get out of the car. Crews pulled him to safety and took him to the hospital. In alamo the wind knocked down power lines and trapped residents in a neighborhood last night. Pg e crews arrived to secure the power and the energized fences in the front yard of a home near danville boulevard. No word of any injuries to anyone in the home. Be careful if you are planning a trip to the north bay this summer. Because we had an unusually warm february, tick season is here sooner than expected. They are skinny, basically bags of bones, and they are very, very sick. If they are lucky they are picked up and brought here to the Marine Mammal center. In most cases they just need food. They are having trouble finding food in the ocean. We think thats because of the warmer weather. In the worst cases veterinarians have even had trouble telling how old they are. Animals that should be ayearold are coming in at weights stunted. And fewer stranded pups this year, but it may be the calm before the storm. We are expecting to see an influx of animals in the near newt. It requires an influx of money from the state. Now in sacramento a hearing on how that money is being spent and how things look for the species going forward.
