This morning the owner of the day care is locked up on federal drug charges, accusing her of storing fentanyl on play mats children use to take naps. Reporter inside the day care, investigators say they found large quantities of fentanyl, along with machines and supplies to package it for sale. Was this day care meant to hide a drug operation . Aaron, these drug traffickers dont care. They could care less about the people they are putting in harms way. In this case the babies were poisoned by drug traffickers. Reporter four children became ill after they were exposed but the owner, gray men mendez allegedly called her husband twice before dialling 911. While waiting for paramedics, prosecutors say her husband was seen carrying heavy shopping bags out a back alley. All of that happened while the children, the babies, were suffering through the effects of fentanyl poisoning and in desperate need of help. Reporter 1yearold nicholas dominichi died at the hospital. Three others were revived with narcan. The dea said it demonstrates the danger fentanyl poses to the country. It is often now mixed into other drugs but since it is odorless and tasteless, users may never know. Fentanyl related deaths have increased every year in the last decade. A little as 2 milligrams can be lethal. The dea seized enough last year to kill every american. Mendez and a codefendant are being held without bail. She told police she knew nothing about fentanyl being stored here at her day care but the authorities just dont believe her. Now they say the day care may have passed inspection but day care inspectors in the city dont check for fentanyl. Why would they . After a brief lull earlier this summer, the number of crossings along the entire southwest border it does appear those numbers once again on the rise. This morning migrant crossings all along the southwest border on the rise. In El Paso Texas the region has seen a 7 day spike in encounters averaging 1,200 per day. Title 42, the Health Policy that allowed officials to quickly expel most migrants at the border was repealed back in may. Since then, city Officials Say the lowest number of daily encounters was around 300. But last week it spiked to roughly 1,700. In arizona, one county saying cdp encountering an average of 2,000 migrants per day throughout the region. In tucson, arizona, one local group said theyre helping shelter around 1,200 migrants per day. But say Border Patrol is all dropping other migrants well outside the city. Challenging time, scary time for families to be dropped off in very Rural Communities and often times with very little support or resources. Reporter here in san diego, Border Patrol bringing more than 2,000 migrants into the county in less than a week. City officials warning the numbers show no sign of slowing down. A confrontation between fans all caught on video. It went from unfortunate to tragic. This morning an investigation into the death of a new England Patriots fan in the after math of this confrontation sunday night in the Fourth Quarter of the patriots game against the miami dolphins. 53yearold dale mooney was in the upper level of Gillette Stadium here in this jersey and hat. Witnesses say that he had been taunted by miami fans before this fight broke out. I just saw a guy in a dolphins jersey come over. He delivered two punches. At that point everybody kind of let go of the guy and he fell back into his seat. He unfortunately never woke up. 300 level. Guy not breathing. We got an emt coming. 300 level. Theyre forming cpr. Reporter mooney, a father of two, was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. Now the Norfolk CountyAttorneys Office as well as Massachusetts State Police have been filed. This morning shocking body camera footage showing a High School Band director being arrested and tased now at the center of a police investigation. Birmingham police say this happened after johnny mens refused to cut the band performance and leave the stadium after a Football Game last week. You all got to go. Get out of my face. Reporter the band kept playing after the final whistle during what is referred to as the fifth quarter a tradition shared by Many High School and hbcu marching bands across the south. Mims directed the band to continue playing. Shortly after the lights in the stadium are turned off. But its what happens next that has mims outraged. Band members screaming in disbelief as an officer pulls out a stun gun during his arrest. To hear the kids cry was the most heart wrenching thing anybody can ever stand. Was there ever a point where you feared for your safety, your life . The feeling of being tased, i have seen it before, but for you to feel it for yourself and the amount of power going in. I could feel my fingers numbing up. They tased me again and then for the third time. Imagine if i had a heart defect issue. Or imagine if i panicked on top of that. It could have been fatal. Reporter mims is charged with Disorderly Conduct, resisting arrest and harassment. His attorney said his civil rights were violated. It was unwarranted. I dont care how it started. It never should have ended up like this. This should have left in a matter in which it deescalated. Reporter Birmingham Police telling abc news the incident is now under investigation by its internal affairs division. My biggest prayer is that, first of all, that these students will not hold a grudge. That they will be able to overcome this. That they would one day be able to move forward and continue to be the great people that they are. Reporter aside from demanding justice, the band director wants the charges dropped and a full apology, not just to himself but an apology to his students as well from the Birmingham Police department for what happened. George, weve seen very strong bipartisan support for helping ukraine, going back to the very beginning of the russian aggression. I have had the opportunity to speak with republican leader of the senate, mitch mcconnell, to people in the house. That support remains strong. President zelenskyy has an opportunity now, in washington, to remind people what the stakes are. This is not just the right thing to do because of the horrific abuses that russia is committing in ukraine. Its the necessary thing to do. If we allow putin to get away with this, it is going to be open season for would be aggressors. The rest of the world is watching whats happening in ukraine. For those who may have designs on their neighbors, as putin had with ukraine, are looking to see what happens. They say, if he can get away with it, maybe i can get away with it. Thats a recipe for a world full of conflict, and thats never good for the United States. U. S. Engaged in talks with saudi arabia over possible mutual defense pact. Saudi arabia has been accused of war crimes in yemen. Responsible for killing an american journalist. How is that in the u. S. National interest . One thing first on yemen. Thanks to very good work that saudi arabia has done over the last year or so, more than a year. Year and a half. Weve now has a truce in yemen which had been the worst humanitarian situation in the world. Theres been a truce. Its fragile. But as a result, people are not getting killed. Humanitarian assistance is getting there. Thats thanks to saudi engagement with the group that has been disrupting the peace in yemen. Second, george. When it comes to possible normalization between saudi arabia and israel. This would be a transformative event. Weve had decades of turmoil, decades of conflict in the middle east. To bring these two countries together in particular would have a powerful effect in stablizing the region, in integrating the region, in bringing people together, not having them at each others throats. Now, its hard to get there. There are things saudis are looking for. Things the israelis are looking for. Things that we would be looking for. That make getting to yes a challenge. But we see the reward if we can get there as well being worth the effort. President is welcoming Prime Minister netanyahu of israel today. Not at the white house, here in new york city. Do you believe that the Prime Minister is willing to do what it takes to normalize relations with saudi arabia . My sense, george, is that everyone involved understands the potential benefits, sees the transformative nature of what this would be. But the devil is always in the details. And making sure that in terms of what the saudis are looking for, the israelis are looking for, what we would be looking for, can we line all that up . Can we make it work . Its challenging. Again, i come back to this proposition that if we can get there, it would be one of the biggest changes for the good that we have seen in that part of the world. Beyond that, i think youd see positive repercussions well beyond the middle east. Final question. It appears the United States may be on the verge of another government shutdown. Seems to be stalling on funding bills in the white house. What would that mean for the state department and diplomatic efforts . It make everything harder. We, of course, would do everything we can to make sure were doing the work that were trying to do on behalf of americans to help keep them secure, to help continue to make peace in conflicts and deal with the issues having an impact on the lives of americans. It would make everything much more difficult. From my perspective, look, its important the government be able to continue to function and we continue to be able to go around the world helping solve problems americans. Here in new york just this week, weve been dealing with everything from Food Insecurity to Climate Change to energy. We brought 100 countries together to deal with the scourge of fentanyl thats killing more americans between 1849 than anything else. These are the kinds of things we can do when were out in the world bringing countries together, youing our diplomacy to finances to problems people are facing. Im so glad to finally meet you. We were supposed to meet when our team and i were in new zealand, but you designed. I resigned and completely ruined that. I remember at the time doing it thinking, oh, no, im sorry. Oh, no, not at all. But testify quite a surprise to the world. How did you respond to the reaction from folks of your resignation . To be honest, i was overwhelmed by the sense that i was new zealands choice. It triggered a discussion about how we make these decisions. I have had particularly a few women say to me, thank you for showing me that its okay to say that im tired or to say, i dont have enough in the tank to do a job well. I think we carry a huge sense of responsibility to just keep going. And the way you said it, which a lot of people can relate to, women in particular. Just didnt have enough in the tank to do the job that you wanted to do. Some people turned that as burnout. How did you deal with that kind of characterization . Yeah. I see them as very different. I could have kept going, but for me, having been through a period where we did experience a lot of crises in new zealand. It was whether i had enough to do the job well. The answer for me was no. It was time for someone else. A bit different from burnout. Yes, i would say so as well. We heard it in your speech, which many people commented on. You broke the mold in so many ways. You were the youngest Prime Minister in new zealand in more than 150 years. Only the second world leader to give birth while in office. Was that a call to other nations, a challenge to them to say, hey, look at what a leader can be . I think it might have been a call to other reluctant leaders. To those who may think they dont have the character traits. They see themselves as too sensitive, not tough enough or roles in leadership particularly politics as being a place where it would be a handful of character traits to bring to the table. We need more empathy in leadership. We need more kindness in leadership. I hope it was a call to action to anyone who is holding themselves back. I look at vulnerability as a strength, not a weakness. To be able to show all sides of yourself. Whats life now after being Prime Minister . I see you posting pictures. Youre at the world cup, playgrounds, birthdays. It is very different. One of the things i wanted to do is to be more present for my family. Im certainly trying to do that. Im also trying to be useful. I am at the moment very lucky to be in boston, harvard. For a fellowship. Yeah. Taking time to think. Its been wonderful. I have got access to a great faculty. More importantly, inspirational students. Also working on issues around we safely ensure that online is a safe environment. Thats one of the things im working on. You did face some challenges, of course, as Prime Minister. One of those were the terrorist attacks at the seminary not seminary. The mosque. The mosque. That led to some work that you wanted to continue some of that work at harvard. How so . That attack was one of the first times we saw such an atrocious attack in that forum, on an online platform. We dont want anyone else to experience that. We started work with tech companies, governments and society. Weve been doing it for several years to try and rid the online environment of violent extremism and terrorism. The next thing is emerging technology. We need to address the challenges. It was a project i worked with great people on. People are still trying to understand ai. People are wondering when you say ai. I hear youre going to write a book. I thought you said at one point you were not going to write a book. What changed your mind . Well, i thought, i didnt want to write about the small individual political things that happened in new zealand over the past five years. So much of it would only be of interest to a small group of people. I didnt want to betray the confidence of all my colleagues that i worked with. Someone said what if you just wrote about what it was like as a human . So it changed my mind. Now im really just writing a few stories. Very exciting working with the team, prince williams prize on climate. Thats where you were last night. Thats where i was last night. Just through the different speeches i want to be part of. Yeah, we have some challenges in the world but there are reasons to be optimistic as well. You bring that optimism. You talk about adventure. That is new zealand. I dont know if you saw, but i jumped off the sky tower. My team convinced me to do it. Have you ever done that . No. Because no one does this in new zealand other than people who visit it. Its about living more and fearing less. Exactly. This is one of the beautiful things about new zealand. We dont have snakes. We find other ways to kill ourselves. What do you miss most about your country . I have only been away a short time, but i have to say people, the people. Just amazing. The thing i miss about politics is i met amazing people.
