Extraordinary pictures coming in overnight from missouri, as the man in charge of controlling the violence in ferguson is caugha in an apparent contradiction. Heres what captain ron johnson said yesterday about the impending curfew. Listen. Tonight, we wont enforce it with trucks andut aht ay well communicate. But hours later, they did, in fact, use tear gas. Captain johnson saying it was because officers saw man who had been shot and they needed to disperse the crowd in order to reach that wounded man and get him to the hospital. There are no signs that the disorder will end anytime soon. We have Team Coverage from all the angles this morning, including former new York City Police commissioner ray kelly offering perspective on how authorities are handling the situation. We start with alex perez in the middle of it all in ferguson. Good morning, alex. Reporter good morning, it has been a long night here in ferguson. The chaos beginning just after midnight. Authorities are tryinur r t hac they found out some of the protesters are armed. Its mass job. Were going to lob smoke first. Smoke first, to see if we can disperse the crowd without having to throw gas. Reporter chaos erupting overnight. As s. W. A. T. Teams move in after reports of a shooter at the protests. Police in full riot gear. Firing smoke canisters and teargas to disperse the crowd. One protester was shot and in Critical Condition this morning. Seven people under arrest for refusing to disperse. We got a report of a shooting victim. Effort to move back and get to the shooting victim. Response was appropriate, a reaction to the shooting and not to enforce the curfew. Protesters dropping to their knees, screaming for justice. No justice, no curfew reporter the 12 00 a. M. Curfew imposed after tempers flared after the naming of the officer who shot Michael Brown. You must disperse the area immediately. You are in violation of the stateimposed curfew. Reporter a scene out of the middle east in middle america. Police taking control of the area and planning to remain out in full force. We will still patrol the area. Well have officers patrolling the area to make sure our citizens are safe and our businesses remain healthy. Reporter officers were deployed to protect businesses. And at this point, there are not reports of overnight looting. Things could change this afternoon. Another huge crowd expected for a planned rally late this afternoon. Dan . Meanwhile, this morning, for the first time, were getting a look at the officer who shot and killed Michael Brown. Thats the incident that kicked off this chaos. Officer darren wilson. Hes in hiding but were learning a lot about him. And Abcs Steve Osunsami is covering that angle, also from ferguson this morning. Steve, good morning to you. Reporter good morning to you, dan. The families have been saying this. Police shared long before this the pictures and mug shots and names of all of those people involved in the looting and thieving earlier this week. Long before they shared and identified this officer. The mistrust here is strong. This morning, families here are getting this first look at the policeman who shot and killed Michael Brown. Heres officer darren wilson, awarded for his police work last february in a photo posted to facebook. Hes just 28 years old, a sixyear veteran of the Ferguson Police department. This morning, he has to hide in a safe place, secret shelter from the firestorm of rage and anger running through the streets. This suburb of st. Louis now known to the world after wilson shot Michael Brown in the street. Justice for Michael Brown reporter missouris governor took his call for order to a city church yesterday. This is a test of whether a community, this community, any community, can break the cycle of fear, distrust, and violence. Reporter he ordered the midnight curfew. It didnt go over well. You need to charge that police with murder. Reporter at one point, the governor was caught in the middle of the screaming. Were going to watch this one day at a time. This is, uh um this is not normal. And our hope was that we would return back to a peaceful normal. But killing our children isnt normal wait, wait, wait, wait. Reporter just when people were settling down, the pot boiled over on friday, when the Ferguson Police chief released this surveillance video. Police believe it shows Michael Brown, wearing the red hat, in the middle of a strongarm robbery at the liquor store 15 minutes before he was shot. Thieves hit the store hard early saturday and robbed three others. And the Business Owner says the police didnt do a thing. When i made the 911 call, they all told me, it aint our problem. Reporter browns cousin spoke up for the store owners. Every time you do Something Like this, it pushes my baby cousins case backwards. See, theyre not helping. Reporter the department of justice urged police here not to release that video. Worried it would make things worse. The police here, beat down, wanted to get more of their story out. The police chief tells me he and his officers have received Death Threats daily. Dan . You and i discussed this a little bit last night on world news. I want to probe your thinking again. What do you think after being there for a week now, what do you think will calm the situation down finally . Reporter absent the prosecution of this officer, im not sure whats going to ease the tensions here. People are demanding prosecution of this officer. They want to hear charges, but the District Attorney is telling us it could be weeks before any decision is made on that. Dan . Steve osunsami has been on the ground for a week for us. Steve, thank you. Lets get the perspective of abc news consultant ray kelly, the former Police Commissioner of the city of new york. Good morning, commissioner. This has been going on for over a year. The democratic governor imposed a curfew, a state of emergency. What is your take on how the situation is being handled . I think you have to preface anything you say by emphasizing the fact that ferguson is a very small town. They dont have the resources. Community affairs, that sort of thing. Hindsight is always 20 20. In my career, i learned to do things the hard way. I think there are things there that had they had an opportunity to do over, they would do over. For instance, i think you need full disclosure from the beginning. You put out all the information you have. This is what we have. This is what we dont have. This is what we know. The specifics as far as numbers of shots fired, bullets the wounds on the body. That sort of thing. We dont know this. I think part of the problem came about because there was this sense that they were holding back information. I think also you need one person in charge of this operation. And i think the governor tried to do that with captain johnson. Its not clear whether or not hes totally in charge because you have multiple jurisdictions. You have many small town, small agencies there because they just dont have the resources to do it on their own. You have the state police, the county police, all of these towns. Theyre lessons that theyre learning. Short of charging the officer, what can be done to ease the tensions right now . Communication. Thats what theyre attempting to do. Continue the go out, meet with the community. Theyre not easy sessions, as you can see. I think theres a fatigue factor with captain johnson. Quite frankly. Hes doing everything out there. Its taking a toll on him. You can see it. But continue to have meetings with communities. Continue to get that exchange and listen to them. As the process goes forward, the grand jury process hopefully continues to go forward quickly. We thank you for your time. You dont think this is going to end anytime soon. Thank you so much. Dan . Thank you, commissioner. President obama has weighed in on this crisis from his vacation calling for calm. And for a full investigation into the shooting of young Michael Brown. That was three days ago. The question this morning, should the president be doing more . Lets bring in jon karl in washington. Jon, how worried is the white house about the optics of all of this . Having him on vacation while this city burns . Is there talk he should leave his vacation and try to calm things down in ferguson . Reporter no talk that i can sense from the white house staff at this point. The president is getting regular briefings. Were told hes closely monitoring this. Its a tough situation for him in terms of getting too much micromanaging. Trying to act, as it were, at the mayor of ferguson. What hes done, as you said, hes ordered the investigation, the fbi and the department of justice investigating what happened with Michael Brown. Hes praised the governor. One of the other things he did in his statement. It would be a little bit difficult for him to come in right now and step on the governors toes on this. Theyre uneasy about this and unsure what role the president has to play. There has been a at this point, a sizable federal roll with the fbi fanning out and investigating the case. Jon, thank you. The other story were tracking this morning, the disturbing new details about the kidnapping of two amish girls in upstate new york. Police revealing more, fearing these were not the pairs only victims. Abcs gio benitez joins us with more. Good morning, gio. Reporter good morning, paula. A sad development in the story. The District Attorney telling me overnight, that those two little amish girls were sexually abused by their alleged kidnappers. A couple, this, as we learn more about those suspects. This morning, potentially haunting news in the case of the amish missing girls who were later abandoned and found alive. A source close to the investigation now telling abc news that the amish girls may not have been the first alleged victims. Saying there could have been others in the past. Do you have anything to say . Reporter the startling news just a day after Stephen Howells and Nicole Vaisey were locked up in a county jail. Held without bond, accused of kidnapping a 7yearold and 12yearold girl, sisters from a roadside stand, allegedly with the intent to inflict physical injury. The motive was to victimize to take these girls from their home and to victimize these girls. Reporter sources say the pair gave lengthy written and recorded statements. When asked if they confessed, the sheriff said theres been detailed provided to us, yes. Reporter the girls disappeared wednesday from their family farm. The sheriff saying coercion tactics were used to lure the girls into the car. After allegedly being abducted for 24 hours, the girls were set free. Barefoot, cold, hungry. They knocked on this door. The husband and wife speaking exclusively to abc news. We just returned the kids to their parents. Thats where they wanted to be. I cant imagine the nightmare the parents went through. Reporter howells has not yet hired a private attorney. And vaiseys attorney didnt comment. Theyve not entered any plea. The sheriff says hes glad theyre in the slammer, calling them dangerous. We feel there was a definite potential of other victims from these two. Reporter prosecutors telling abc news those little girls were sexually abused during their time away from home. Weve been told more charges against the alleged kidnappers are on the way, including potential federal charges. Theyll face a judge on thursday. A horrifying story. Gio, thank you. Rick perry, the powerful and longserving republican governor of texas, stepping to the mic saturday denouncing his indictment on criminal charges of abuse of power and coercion. Its all happening on the island paradise of bali in indonesia. The suspect is a teenager from chicago, along with her boyfriend. Reporter good morning, paula. The young chicago woman and her boyfriend have now been officially charged with murder. The morning, Indonesian Police are awaiting the results of an autopsy. The girls mother may have fought back while being bludgeoned to death. The charges are based on witness testimony and crime scene evidence. This morning, 19yearold heather mack has swapped her suite up a the upscale st. Regis hotel in bali for a jail cell. No cameras. Reporter mack and her boyfriend, 21yearold amateur rapper, tommy schaefer, are now charged with the murder of macks own mother. 62yearold chicago socialize sheila von weise mack. The couple are accused of killing her last wednesday then stuffing her half naked body in this bloodstained suitcase. Police say they put it in a taxi telling the driver they would be right back. But never returned. Authorities tracking them down later that day at another hotel. The young couple seen here being fingerprinted, telling investigators they had escaped after being kidnapped by an armed gang who murdered macks mother. Shes innocent. Well prove that, by the logistics of what is occurring at this time,ky not talk about. But i will be speaking about it later. Reporter in a statement obtained by abc news, macks lawyer says the teen is two months pregnant. Mack grew up in this suburban mansion. Former neighbors saying the relationship between mother and daughter was always rocky. Police responded to this address 86 times in the last 10 years. Mostly domestic disturbances. And just last year, the two moved to this chicago highrise. Every family has its issues. You hoped this move would make things better. Reporter macks boyfriend also had a difficult home life according to his former instructor. He didnt have a place to sleep. He was going back and forth between friends houses or couches. We had no idea that tommy would ever have his name next to the word murder. Reporter police say they have Surveillance Footage of the mother and daughter arguing at the exclusive st. This is close to 4,000 marijuana plants, found, allegedly, in a california state park. The large plants worth a whopping 5 million bucks. They had to be pulled out of the canyon by two helicopters. The wife was jolted awake when the teens allegedly entered the home. The police investigated this as a burglary. They say now theres not enough evidence to charge the teens beyond trespassing. This morning, basketball superstar ray allen is crying foul at the Coral Gables Police department and how they handled what he says was a serious crime committed against his family. We pray that no one else has to endure this kind of intrusion on their home or their familys safety. Everyone deserves to feel safe in their own homes. Allen says a group of seven teenagers allegedly broke into his home in the middle of the night, while his wife and four children were sound asleep. In a statement to abc news, he says his wife shannon woke up to loud voices only to find five people in their bedroom. With flashlights. She yelled out, what are you doing in my house . They immediately fled. Reporter after interviewing the young adults, authorities are calling it all a prank, saying the teenagers were all partying next door, thought allens home was vacant, and wanted to see what it looked like. Police have not charged them with anything because the group entered the home with an unlocked door and didnt steal anything. Apparently under florida law, unless the victim files a complaint, the police cant charge trespassing unless they witness it. Reporter allen and his family are blowing the whistle on the case. Telling us the suggestion that anyone can enter an occupied bedroom and in the middle of the night without consequences is unsettling. They intend to press charges. The Coral Gables Police Department Says theyre continuing to work with the Miamidade County Attorneys Office and will work with the allen family regarding the filing of criminal charges.
