She has no idea what is going on. Im standing in the middle of a lot of worried looking people. Kind of like right now. They did an echocardiogram. Sonogram of the heart found billy was born with a heart disease. Something called pulmonary atrigia, the pulmonary valve was blocked and a hole in the wall between the left and right sides of his heart. Monday morning, a doctor opened his chest and fixed one of the two defects. Went in with a scalpel, did magic that i couldnt begin to explain. Opened the valve. The operation was a success. The longest three hours of my life. It was a success. This poor kid what he looked like on monday. But this is what he looked like yesterday. Poor kid, not only got a bad heart, got my face. We begin this morning with a deadly stabbing rampage on one of the Largest College campuses in the state of texas. 20yearold student remains in custody this morning. Investigators say he surrendered after using a hunting knife to kill one person and wounded at least three others at university of texas at austin. All victims were students. Officials are trying to figure out what led to the attack. Here is abcs danya bachus with more. Reporter Authorities Say before 1 00 monday afternoon a student at university of texas at austin went on a stabbing rampage. He walked up to a guy just within arms length of me. Grabbed him by the shoulder and stabbed him in the back. Do not move or you will be tased. Reporter police say 21yearold kendricks white seen here after he was arrested by police used island hu styled hunting knif. Three patients that have been stabbed. One in the neck. To stab and kill a fellow student and injure three others. Everyone was yelling. He is here. He is here. And just running away. The attack sent a wave of panic across campus. All i could think about was hiding doing whatever i could to stay out of sight. Until i knew it was okay to come out. Just, absolute fear that i never felt on campus before. Police are interviewing the suspect, trying to figure out a motive. His motivation, what was going through his mind. I cant answer at this time. Actually called his exgirlfriend during the shooting so she could listen as he gunned down his victims. Seven people were shot, one woman died. Most of the victims are minorities. The suspect, was killed, but race was not a motive here. Dramatic video from witnesses that shows Police Quickly moving in to take down that gunman. The shot from high above that pool area where all of this shooting took place. The cops swarming the scene. Guns drawn. Taking aim. Shooting. The victim just happened to be present at the moment in time when he decided to carry out his spontaneous act of violence. There is zero information to in indicate that race played a factor in this terrible and horrific crime. Now all of the injured are expected to survive. They are going to be looking at this individuals history as far as patterns of violence, any kind of relationships that he has had that, where there has been friction, has there been any indication he was susceptible to committing this type of attack. This type of violence. Theyre going to look at all of his email traffic, social media activity. Any kind of pattern. That he was exhibiting. Days leading up to the situation. It looks like there was this breakup. Clearly had an impact on him emotionally and with his behavior. Theyre going to be looking at different aspects of his life. Steve, at what point do you piece this all together and try to figure out what the motive was in all of this. We know about the phone call with the exgirlfriend. What does that tell you . What that indicates he was emotionally distraught. There was something wrong with him. And unlike, most people go through when there is a breakup, they have outlets that they can turn to, people, friends, family, this person clearly wasnt able to cope with this type of situation. We have seen this many times. Its typically like a Mental Health issue, somebody isnt capable of dealing with distraught emotion and feelings they have. What do they do nowadays, they act out. Where they go out and kill somebody. Gets all this media attention. It is very unfortunate. We are seeing this all over the country in some cases worldwide where this is the way people are reacting when they have problems. Steve, want to get back to the other story. The Campus Stabbing there. At the university of texas. In austin. Many people remember the university of texas where you had the clock tower shooting, some 50plus years ago. 17 People Killed then. But we also had, more recently the ohio state stabbing attack as well. University of texas, ohio state, both open campuses here. It seems as if, there are people who might be there who can come in from off the street and do these attacks. But in this case it was a student . It is very unfortunate. Again it shows this type of strange pattern that we have been seeing where people are just, theyre committing this type of violence. Now this is a different situation. You now have a large knife. And that is something that is concerning to me. Terrorist organizations have told their sympathizers to go out an use a knife to kill people. Now, this hasnt been determined whether it is terrorist attack or some other type of situation. But thats going to be part of the investigation. Nevertheless, these College Campuses are wide open. And so you can have somebody that comes on campus, they could be a student, as the case here. There is not very much that can be done not knowing if a person is mentally deranged or having emotional issues where they will go to violence as we saw in the situation here. We talk about regulating guns in the country. We are seeing more and more attacks here and abroad, terrorismrelated or not. In this case, with a knife. Some cases with a car. We know the state Department Just issued a terror alert for europe following recent attacks there. Is this a new normal . How do we adjust for attacks with low grade nonweapons so to speak . We have to almost start looking for these situations where people are having problems and their behavior is changing. This is a very difficult thing to look for. Law enforcement stretched so thin. Theres so many issues that Law Enforcement is dealing with. They can only do so much. It really relies on the community and the public. They have to start noticing when an individual is having some type of problem, if theyre depressed. Whether they are going to go to violence. Not that we have to be reporting on everybody having a bad day. You have to think about whether an individual is kind of susceptible to violence. Then you have to Start Talking about it. Not only with them, but maybe with the authorities or people at a campus, you know, the school administrators. There has been a lot of talk about Mental Health issues, how we deal with that.
