If you had to describe me, id say im an emotional person with an addictive behavior. My addictive behavior is to the 49ers. And i dont deny it. My kids know it. I have five kids. And i used to hear it from them all the time, how you love the 49ers more than us. And i told them i love them too. But i couldnt deny the fact of my feelings for the 49ers. Its like family to me. San francisco native Martin Jacobs is a true throwback. Hes a leather helmet. Hes converse sneakers. Hes simply vintage. He embraces the past and holds history near and dear to his heart. And believes that the paths blazed by those before us help to guide us more clearly than the future. And the history of the 49ers and their faithful is no different. History is important. There wouldnt be the team they have today without those players that formed the franchise. Im interested basically in american history, the history of the 49ers when they started. I lived through it. But when youre talking about history, youre talking about items one of a kind, people, special people. History. Its defined as a continuous systematic narrative of past events, relating to a particular people, country, period, or person. Although it comes with a stamped date and at times perceived to be antiquated, history is anything but. It isnt an inanimate object meant to be encased in a museum, forgotten. Its meant to be a tool that breathes life into generations, educates, and inspires all at the same time. Theres no better example of such inspiration as the pro football hall of fame, located in canton, ohio. The hall of fame is a special place because youre walking right through history and seeing all the places. Ive been there five times. Like i said, without the history i probably wouldnt be here sitting giving this interview. The pro football hall of fame. The bedrock of the nfl. Where the league was founded on september 17th, 1920. While names like jim thorpe and Vince Lombardi echo through these hallways, theres more than a hint of the 49ers in these hallowed halls as well. Although the team didnt join the nfl until 1950, they were part of the allamerican Football Conference from 1946 to 1949. When the allamerican Football Conference folded, the baltimore colts, cleveland browns, and of course the 49ers joined forces with the National Football league. It was in the 1950s that the 49ers would be perceived as something special, as their milliondollar backfield exploded on to the scene and the running game was viewed as one of the most dominant of their time. Playmakers, leaders, dynasties. All of these are represented in canton. And all of them have the Common Ground of Northern California adorning their walls. The 49ers live on in the pro football hall of fame, but so do their faithful. If you ever decide to visit, you will find that behind those great players and coaches there stands an army of fans. And by the way, if you look close enough, nestled in the hallway, emblazoned on a plaque, eternally professing his faithfulness, you will find Martin Jacobs as well. And he is right where he belongs. Miss ps. A dark secret in silicon valleys hightech job market. Indentured servant is a pretty accurate term. Monday morning we investigate a system of cheap labor. I feel im trapped. These guys shouldve gone to my place, cuz right now, i have two breakfast croissants for just four bucks. Theyre both made with a freshly cracked egg and melting cheese on a buttery, flaky croissant. Try the supreme with bacon and ham, or the sausage. Theyll fill you up for whoa hey what are you doing . You cant make a commercial for your restaurant at my restaurant not if you keep interrupting me, i cant. A successful businessman who owns sports merchandising stores. An author of several books. And a historian of all things 49ers. This native faithful has seemingly done it all. What else has Martin Jacobs done in his life to make a buck . For starters, he walked the aisles of kezar and represented the red and gold. That became my first job. I was a vendor for the 49ers for about 13 years. I started out picking up cushions for a nickel a piece. From there i graduated to popcorn, peanuts, hot dogs, and i never missed a 49er play. And during this time im collecting 49er memorabilia because after the games id pick up all the discarded programs, yearbooks, ticket stubs. So i started collecting around 12 years old, id say. And i focused on Hugh Mcelhenny. It was in 1955 after the baltimore colt game that i was in the parking lot. And i remember mcelhenny came out and he had a little duffel bag with him, and i said, hugh, do you have anything i could have, you know, for a souvenir . He said, well, i have a torn jersey. And he says, if you want it, you can have it. And it was all rolled up in a little ball, like sweaty stinky little jersey. And it was torn. And ive kept it all these years. It became like the cornerstone of my collection. Collecting. Theres nothing uncommon about wanting to retain a piece of your team. Whether its helmets, cards, you name it. People collect it. But in the case of martin theres nothing at all common about what he collects. And the depth of his collection is simply astounding. This is a tearaway jersey. And they ripped a lot. And this is the one mcelhenny gave me in 1955. This is the cape that Hugh Mcelhenny wore and he signed it on the sleeve, Hugh Mcelhenny, rookie of the year 1952, pro bowl 1958. This ball in particular is signed by kirk bell, commissioner. Very rare ball. To find one of these is almost impossible. To find it in any kind of shape. This is one of my favorite items. This is mcelhennys chin strap, by the way. But this is a 195549er helmet. Got the old single bar mask. My dad is a special collector. He doesnt just collect anything. He doesnt collect the 49er ew stuff, you know. He doesnt just get what you see at the stores. If they dont have any kind of character or history to it, then hes probably not interested. Its got to be either game used. Its got to be autographed by a special player. Something that will be close to his heart. And he wont ever let go. If somebody wanted to buy something from him. Hed say like nothings for sale, you can only look, this is my personal museum. Its priceless to him. This is one of my favorites. This is r. C. Alleyoop owens jersey. This is his rookie shirt. R. C. Owens wore this shirt just one year because 1957 is the only year that the 49ers wore this style, with two gold stripes and one red stripe. I also collect and write about world war ii. And my father was a veteran in world war ii. The 91st infantry division. And he was decorated with medals and so on. And he gave me his first collectible, which actually was my first collectible when i was like 4 years old, was his dog tags. Thats been my prized possession. My first collectibles. So as you can see clearly, martin is nostalgic. He is that special fan who has collected amazing pieces spanning across the decades. Whether its a program, ticket stub, or jersey worn by one of the 49er greats. Chances are he has it. Hes also glad to share a story or 20. And that is why his passions possessed him to pick up a pen and scribe a new chapter in his life. Literally. My first book was before they were champions. And i wrote about the 49ers before the super bowl. Leading up to the super bowl. The 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s. And then i did another book called San Francisco 49ers images of sport. But im working on a third book thats called 60minute men about the 49er players that gave their heart, their soul, their blood, their guts to the game. The 49ers brought him happiness. As i grew up, i realized it also brought me happiness, and its something that bonded us together as a father and son. Its something we share together. Its pretty special. When i met john york at his suite at one of the games, it was a new Orleans Saints game, he sat me down and he said he read one of my books that i authored. And he said, you know, youre a very lucky individual, and i said, why is that . He said, very, very few people are able to do the things that they want to do. You have been able from what ive gathered from reading your books and things, to do exactly what youve wanted to do. I have to credit my father because he started me off when i was a little kid saying if you can get your hobby to be your business youre going to be a very happy person. Happiness. Martin jacobs has found that. Whether it was through his days of hard work, walking the concrete steps at kezar stadium, enjoying a sunday with his son joshua, or flipping through the pages of time that he has so delicately preserved, martin has found that habit. And through the ups and downs, the sunny days and the rainy ones, for whatever reason, it was all worth it. Many of us are inspired not only by our surroundings but by the people who surround our everyday lives. For Joshua Jacobs inspiration sprung from his father, martin, whose loyalties most certainly rubbed off on joshua at a young age and manifested in a brilliant talent to share with the rest of the faithful. When i was 6 years old, i began to start drawing. When i was hanging out with my dad and we were watching 49er games, i was thinking, hey, thats a great idea. Why dont i just start drawing some 49ers . By the age of 12 years old i really felt like my pictures are starting to look realistic, and i wanted to carry on and get better and better, treat it like maybe im like a player on the field. I want to run faster. I want to catch better. So when i started doing my paintings, i wanted them to look more realistic. I want the expression. I want the color. And you know, the skys the limit. And one day youll be able to look at my paintings and you wont be able to tell if its a photograph or an actual painting. One win away. Thats how close the San Francisco giants are to another world series title, thanks to a gem from Madison Bumgarner. Highlights and much more coming up. Plus a fire rips through a san jose motorcycle shop. Were going to have a live report showing you what firefighters had to do just to reach a fire hydrant. Bottom of the third. Bases were loaded. Juan perez out of all people hits a tworun shot. Its not over the fence. Just missed by inches. However, hes going to get a triple. This is the most fun youre ever going to have playing baseball. Its tough to keep all our stuff pushed aside and just concentrate on pitching. But if you want to be successful, thats what youve got to do. And we were able to do that. We had a lot of fun making pitches, working both sides of the plate, getting ahead, and mixing it up. And you know, it felt really good. Well, Madison Bumgarners just 25 years old. He already has four world series starts. And get this, hes won all four games, and hes never allowed more than one run in any of those four games. Complete highlights and reaction coming up on xfinity. Well see you a little bit later. Early on fans were saying that game 5 would be key. And now here we are giants on top leading this series. We were actually inside at t park in the bleachers section with some awfully loud proud giants fans as the game ended and the fireworks went off. And the celebration began. The giants topped Kansas City Royals 50. Another big win. There were hugs and a big response from the crowd as the giants honored one of their most loyal fans. Of course game 6 tuesday back in kansas city. And boy, you know, folks out here waiting to say goodbye as players leave. But it just seems, as you said, that they dont want to go home. Everyone tonight really in a mood to celebrate. Reporting live at at t park, Christie Smith, nbc bay area news. All right, christie, thanks so much. As you mentioned, weve got game 6 and maybe 7 in kansas city. Whats the weather going to be like . Meteorologist rob mayeda here with that part of the score. Yeah, right now were seeing temperatures in the low 60s around San Francisco, which should be a little bit warmer. Than the weather well see for game 6. And potentially a game 7. Well see temperatures around tuesday in kansas city in the mid to upper 50s and about the same for wednesday. But meantime, back to the bay area for a world series viewing party. It should be pretty nice back in San Francisco as we watch the game perhaps outdoors around 5 00. Those temperatures around San Francisco climbing into the 70s for the middle part of the week. Well talk a little bit more about that midweek warmup in your forecast coming up in a few minutes. Back to you. All right, rob, sounds good. Well week, waiting to see who will world the world series. Some local businesses say theyre already big winners. Local restaurants and businesses say the cash registers are ringing quite a bit lately. Business has been especially good in the past few days with the world series being played right down the street. The giants, they filling up the neighborhood. These people come, they spend money, theyre happy. The citys alive. Everybody makes money. So everybodys happy. Yeah, you could say that again. Stores and restaurants may still get a spike in business as fans celebrate tonights win. The giants then head of course to kansas city tomorrow for game 6. Stay with nbc bay area for continuing coverage of the series title. Our very own janelle wang heading to kansas city. Were going to have live reports from her starting on tuesday. In the meantime, we have coverage both on air and online. And turning to our other top story tonight, cleanup is under way right now after a twoalarm fire at yamaha repair shop in san jose. This happened near the intersection of camden and union. It forced a section of Camden Avenue to be completely shut down for about three hours. Nbc bay areas Marianne Favro joining us live from the shot with details. Marianne. Reporter well, peggy, this fire started shortly after 5 00, and tonight you can see that crews are out here boarding up the windows. Now, fortunately the business had closed when the fire broke out. Flames were shooting out of the windows. And there was no one inside the business. But there were motorcycles and atvs with full gas tanks, and that posed a big risk. Firefighters faced another challenge. The closest fire hydrant was about 1,000 feet away. Took a little bit to get water on it because the closest fire hydrant is about 1,000 feet from here. But once we were able to get that we called the second alarm immediately and were able to get personnel here to put the fire out. Reporter there were also bars on the windows. So it was too dangerous to send firefighters inside. That meant they were forced to attack the flames from the outside only. Until they could cut the bars away from the windows. More than 50 firefighters worked for an hour to knock down the flames. Tonight the cause of the fire is still under investigation. And as we mentioned, a section of Camden Avenue and union was closed for about two hours, but now that road has since been reopened. Reporting live in san jose, mayor y Marianne Favro, nbc bay area news. Marianne, thanks very much. In Southern California eight firefighters were hurt overnight in a Storage Facility fire that broke out at extra Storage Space in venice. More than 300 firefighters called to ballttle the flames. Because of so many flammable items in the Storage Units and the roof, the fire was especially hot and smoky. Several firefighters had to be treated for heat exhaustion. Others suffered back injuries and blisters. The cause of that fire under investigation. And were learning more tonight about the hours leading up to the capture of the couple accused of killing two california deputies. Luis enrique monroybracamonte was holed up inside an auburn house and captured on friday. These pictures were taken at the house where several windows were broken during the search. The home sustained extensive damage from tear gas canisters that were thrown into the home in an effort to capture the suspect. The blood is on the ground. Just glass everywhere. And you can just smell the pepper the peppery smell even from outside the house. And it hits your nose. Your nose starts running immediately. Now, right now investigators still trying to figure out a motive for the shootings. U. S. Immigration Officials Say that the convicted drug dealer may have been living under multiple identities. They say he may have even had troubles with the law under another one of his aliases. Monroybracamonte and his wife, janelle monroy, are now in the Sacramento County jail. Theyre both scheduled to be arraigned on tuesday. One step closer. People in one san jose neighborhood could find out tomorrow if a local bar they say brings criminals to their doorsteps will be forced to close. Were talking about the el tarasco bar on 13th street. It has a reputation for violence, prostitution, and vandalism. The latest incident happened just two days ago. A Security Guard at the bar was shot four times. The gunman remains at large tonight but the Security Guard was wearing a bulletproof vest and is expected to survive. Neighbors in the city want to shut the place down. This recent incident gives us the basis for finally getting an injunction to shut the bar down. Its really about what we can persuade a court to do. And with this kind of violent incident i feel much more confident that well have a judge wholl grant an injunction and shut this bar down. That Court Hearing is scheduled for tomorrow. The city has already said its going to pull the bars liquor permit come december. Owners of the bar have declined to comment. After an nobs by area followup, the tap water in san jose is now safe to drink again. This is the word from state water leaders this weekend, who lifted the boil water notice for several san jose streets. The San Jose Water Company says that flushing the problem from the water main and taking water samples. Both friday and saturday. The Water Company says it is personally delivering the news to everyone that was affected. Coming up next, as investigators search for a motive in that shooting in washington, the debate over gun control in that state is as fierce as ever. Well have the very latest. Also, take a look at the stunning video of just a huge river of lava on the big island of hawaii. Dozens of people who live in its path are getting ready toevth. Well take you there. And right now were seeing temperatures in the 50s and 60s outside and a warmup for the middle part of the week, but your halloween plans may need to include an umbrella. Well show you that change in our microclimate forecast when we come right back. Got a tip for nbcs bay area Investigative Unit . Call 1888996tips. Or email theunit nbcbayarea. Com. Nbc bay area.
