Reporter they really spread out at this hour, tonight it was several thousand protesters, tonight several hundred more, the protesters say their voices are being heard, even though what we see tonight is added vandalism and bringing some traffic to a standstill. Tonight, several hundred antitrump protesters marched down broadway, police blocking them where bottles were thrown at officers. Then they broke off and continued to block all lanes of interstate 580. It was a night many hoped would be calm. This crew boarded up windows because five were smashed during last nights protest of nearly 7,000. Trying to get it done before they come to march again. Reporter a pastor stood on the corner asking to stop the violence and vandalism. That aint cool, man. Reporter another man passionately pleading with the protesters. Who cares about trump . This is off the streets, do not tear up oakland. Reporter the rally at the plaza against trump lasted about two hours before they went to the streets. I need positive change, to know that my future is secure and can feel safe in my community and home. I feel like trump just wants hate and wants to destroy it. Reporter tonight, a third night of protests as many look for solutions. Donald trump is the president , the man said that he was going to do this, that and the other for the community. Lets give him a chance to do that. Reporter now chp says two people were arrested after breaking through a fence and making it onto 580, as part of the Group Protesting there shutting down traffic. And ian a short while ago alluded to the scene at 580, the scene there at telegraph and 580, stopped briefly, you can see the Police Officers there on the freeway, and protesters blocking traffic in san jose, this is the scene on highway 87, shortly after 9 00 p. M. Video posting it on social media, and the protesters later marched to the Martin Luther king jr. Area. And thousands saying trump was not their president. One demonstration in south bay left a principal on leave after a little too much freedom of speech. Nbc bay area has more on the district and how he used all of his words. The interim superintendent out of town tonight, but yeah, the students really upset their principal is not working as of this afternoon. This as theyre now doing online petitions and say they expect to do more protests if he does not come back to work. The video circulating on social media, and the latest antitrump message, many rallying with the principal. A move that got this man student applause, but placed him on administrative leave. The antitrump movement is growing among bay area high schools. Today, its important to be scared and feel the fear that people are feeling. Reporter a walkout at the high school in concord. Then at College Park High school in pleasant hill. And in San Francisco, about 2,000 students representing ten high schools merged together. We dont support trump, we are walking for a reason. Reporter most protests have been peaceful except for one student teacher altercation at the Concord High School academy. Still all the messages show a concern for the future, a political stand and even a principal is willing to put his job on the line for it. Now, there is no school here tomorrow because of the holiday, veterans day observance, but on monday, it will be there again, there could be another option to do at that point. So to be continued. Well, the rental market is certainly a hot topic for some in San Francisco, its a painful one, too, now there are 60 main reasons that a landlord can legally evict somebody ranging from not paying your rent to having too many roommates. But one type of vacation is all about families, spiking 200 in recent years. Well, guys, even if you have not been evicted you may be living in a home where someone was kicked out illegally. And that means you can actually lock in that persons old rent price, even if it is thousands less than what you currently pay. Our Investigative Unit spent six months looking into the vacations all over San Francisco. And we found some landlords seem to be abusing the system and making a lot more money in the process. All right. You want to eat this first . Reporter angela and her daughter have lived in this oakland apartment for two years, but they still do not consider it home. This is where they say they sure living, a San Francisco apartment that was their home for nearly a decade, until they were forced to leave. I was trying to do my best to stay there with police kmy kids school. My whole life was there. Reporter in San Francisco, landlords can legally kick out their tenants if in some cases, their relatives want to move in. And when rachelle got her vacation notice, she and her three kids had to leave their home that had been under rent control for ten years. You couldnt find a place. Reporter her two oldest children went to live with their dad in San Francisco, and rachelle moved to oakland with her youngest daughter. Its kind of like having your kids taken away from you, its hard. Reporter San Francisco is home to 1300 of those evictions last year, the most seen in the decade, to learn more we looked at an entire year of eviction e it showed families who were evicted. By law they had to live there at least four years before renting to somebody new. But our investigation uncovered widespread abuse. What we found was astonishing. Reporter that was our producer, we along with other investigators traveled throughout the city over the past six months going doortodoor to nearly 300 of those homes to find out who is actually living there. We interviewed over 100 people about their living situation. And in 24 cases, which represent nearly one in four of all the evictions we looked into, the person who is supposed to be living in the home is not. A violation of the city laws. Does anyone check that the people are actually living there . No, we dont check. Reporter robert colins is executive director on the board. The Agency Responsible for looking into evictions. They dont require proof of residency after an eviction. So the people evicted have to be their own sort of private investigator . At this point, yes. Reporter colins says the best option for people is to take their landlords to court. If you have been wrongly evicted, San Francisco law al w allows you to collect big damages that can total millions of dollars s in damages. We are talking about home crises. There is no way to minimize it. Reporter we showed our findings to San Francisco super jane kent. Where is the supervision . Like many laws, we are a complaintdriven enforcement system. But it would help if we did the random audits and prosecuted those that were evading the law. Reporter the rent board presents a random selection each month to the district attorneys office. We discovered not a Single Person has been prosecuted in the past ten years, the d. A. s office says it is hard to prove that the landlord committed fraud when they evict tenants, which brings us back to rachelle. He said his mother was sick but at one point he was going to help out with the family. Reporter the eviction shows the landlords mom is supposed to be living there at least through next year. So we checked out the building for ourselves, and we did not find the landlords mother. Instead, brandnew tenants are renting. And by the looks of this online ad, the apartment has been completely renovated. The listed price . 5,000 a month, nearly three times the price of what rachelle was paying. Your whole life changed because they said you have to move out because a Family Member is moving in. But it turns out that a Family Member was not living there. Not sure what to say to that, surprise. Reporter the landlord didnt want to talk to us, nor did the new tenants. But what they didnt realize is if their landlord didnt defend that eviction, theyre also entitled to rachelles old rent. You may have better rent than you thought you would never have. Extend that to an entire year, savings of 35,000 in some cases. Reporter angela says that landlords should not be allowed to kick anyone out until they first prove that they or their Family Members are actually moving in. If that is the whole reason theyre able to have families split apart love you. Then definitely they need to show that that is what theyre doing.
