Retired traffic officer. He told police he was working on a film shoot 12 years ago when a construction worker gave it to him explaining that he had found it on simpsons former property. I would think that an lapd officer, if this story is accurate as were being told, would know that anytime you come into contact with evidence that you should and shall submit that to investigators. So i dont know what the circumstances are, why that didnt happen, or if that entirely is accurate, or if this whole story is possibly bogus from the getgo. Investigators are now conducting dna tests on that knife to determine the aw authentici authenticity, but even if some evidence were found it could not be used against simpson. He is protected by law from being prosecuted for the killings a second time. Simpson is now in prison in nevada on a robbery kidnap conviction. Legal analyst steven clark. Jack s joins us now. It seems flabber gasting if this is true that a Police Officer with a knife from the o. J. Simpson property wouldnt immediately turn that over and hand it over to his superiors. And now this officer is retired so he wont be able to face discipline within the department but he could be looked at for obstruction charges. Now, he may be an important witness in the case to talk about how this knife was found, but it really is mindboggling that someone that is in Law Enforcement wouldnt recognize the import of this piece of ed. So he was found not guilty, o. J. Simpson was found not guilty of the killings, but i thought that if there was new evidence then you could retry someone. No. O. J. Would never be able to face another trial for these murders. But its still important to analyze this evidence because if someone else was involved, there is no statute of limitations for murder and that other person could face a murder charge. Thats why i think its so important that as much analysis can be done on this knife be done for this investigation and also secondarily for Nicole Browns family and ronald goldmans family. Both families feel that justice was never done in this case when o. J. Walked out the door. This piece of evidence may provide some new information to these families. Well, steven so, many people are hooked on this miniseries, the o. J. Simpson miniseries that is streaming right now. How much of that do you think has to do with this new evidence and the new attention on the case . Well, certainly this is a case that has captivated the nation for many years. It was the first major case on television. You had so many of societal issues involved in this case. You had the issue of race relations. You had the issue of celebrity justice. You had the issue so many things are going on here that it just captivated us. You have the dream team versus the prosecutions dream team. So people want answers to these questions, and thats why its kept in the american spotlight for so long. And obviously this miniseries is getting great ratings and the reason is because it is a fascinating case that asks a lot of questions. Really, weve seep changes in the law as a result of the o. J. Case, particularly when it comes to Domestic Violence. Many changes were made as a result of the way that the Domestic Violence issues in the o. J. Case were handled or not handled on previous occasions by the l. A. Police department. All right. Well, thank you very much, steven. We know that dna evidence isnt tested as quickly as it is on so well have to wait and see. Thank you. Well continue to follow this story, bring you the latest on air and online. This is video of 20yearold Mariah Gonzalez arriving at court this morning. She pleaded not guilty to the charge of felony child abuse. Nbcs Stephanie Chuang is live there. She didnt speak. Her attorney did. Hes saying theres more to the story that hasnt come out yet. Reporter thats right, scott and kris. He wouldnt go into that, but he said the parents have a, quote, bond with Livermore Police, hinting that one or both of the parents may have a direct ties, involvement with the department. We veal to see about that. We dont have that confirmed. What we do know is that 20yearold Mariah Gonzalez showed up this morning between her sister and lawyer, later joined by her mother. According to the Police Report, two mothers identified solely by first names, nicole and amman dashgs called Livermore Police on february 13th, saying they caught their nanny, gonzalez, on camera abusing their 13monthold baby. On february 22nd, she was booked into jail on felony child abuse but she was released on 100,000 bail. The Police Report said the footage showed the babysitter putting her hand near the babys face as shes crying, muffling those cries before the baby squirms, quikick, and goes limp. She said her statement was completely inconsistent with what they saw on the video. Her attorney has not seen the footage. But he said gonzalez knew there were security cameras throughout the house. Theres no evidence of any injury to the child and he finally suggests theres special treatment of the case because of what he says is a connection between those parents and Livermore Police. But it would make since in how the Livermore Police became so enthusiastic instantaneously about this just handling of the chile. The allegations arise on the 18th. By the 19th shes in custody without any doctor examining the child, without any allegation the child was in any way, shape, or form injured. He goes on to say that the parents told gonzalez she would be fired but had her first take the baby to the park, firing her the next day. Gonzalez advertised on the wellknown baby sitting website care. Com. Investigators are trying to determine how many other kids she cared for and whether there were other victims. She is due back in court for a pretrial, but before that, there was an issue of a protective order. The prosecutors got one approved by the judge to keep her away from anyone with a child, anyone younger than 18. The defense is trying to modify that to anyone 14 and under so gonzalez can still be with some friends and family members. That review is set for april 8th. Stephanie chuang, nbc bay area news. Well have some scattered rain moving. E ear starting to see it already going through the midday. By early afternoon well still have these scattered showers moving through. So were looking at the moisture finally arriving for some of us in parts of the bay area, still havent made it to san jose but we will have that chance as we go into the next several hours. Were also taking a look at rain in richmond at 63 degrees in the peninsula. It is 64 degrees. And we have those cloudy skies, some of the clouds, low clouds hanging over San Francisco as well as the north bay as that rain has moved in there. We will see this spotty off and on throughout the day, but a bigger storm system arriving tomorrow. As we look at whats happening here, the Atmospheric River is developing and what is that . Its a flow of the upper level winds allowing for these storm systems to move right over the bay area. Well have one after another. And weve already had a couple of them that theyve been so weak. They havent brought us much in the way of rain. But we will have some more activity here, more energy as we go into the day tomorrow. But today looking at some scattered light rain that will be with us for the rest of the day. And then as we go into tomorrow, we start to see that next storm system arriving. So going through the time line, here we are at 9 00 tonight, still some rain, and well see that throughout the night and into the start of the day tomorrow. But then we start to see some more intense colors here on the futurecast, which shows some heavy rain and also the winds that will be picking up with gusts up to 50 Miles Per Hour. So at 1 00 we veal a pretty good coverage of rain and it continues through early afternoon into the evening before that first system wraps up and starts to move off to the east and start pros dusing some snow in the sierra. Then there will be another round by sunday afternoon starting in the north bay and working its way all across the bay area with a pretty good coverage throughout the day on sunday so it looks like it will be raining pretty much all weekend. With all the hours of rain coming down were looking at the potential of over an inch of rain in the north bay in San Francisco and over 2 inches of rain for parts of the south bay. So the potential impact, flashflooding and also some brief debris and mudslides. The winds will be at about 35 to 50 Miles Per Hour, especially saturday afternoon, raising the concerns of some Power Outages and also if youre heading to the sierra the snow starts sunday evening and were looking at 1 to 3 feet of snow. We dont have cameras in any of the other housing areas, and they only went in last night so its interesting that it happened here. It is interesting. One watch dog group is questioning why guards grouped the inmates as they did in a way that could have sparked that fight and did so in the same area where the cameras were installed. Sheriff laurie smith invited news crews to see those new cameras just two days ago. As for the injuries, the nursing staff treated several inmates for bumps and bruises. Now, the brawl happened just hours before a judge rheaumed smiths deputies, three of them, must stand trial for last summers beating to death of an inmate, michael tyree. Voilence among young people retaliation for o retaliation is a familiar response in cities that struggle to control violence with its young people, one crime against another. We meet a man who chose a different path, a brighter one. Garvin thomas has bay area proud. Reporter raymond, a 16yearold junior at mt. Haden high school admits hes a bit shy, so knocking on strangers doors to get them to sign a petition is definitely outside of his comfort zone, but its what he was willing to do in order to do the right thing. When violence takes the life of someone close, revenge sometimes feels like a good response. An eye for an eye, a fair deal. That is not, however, how raymond pardine sees it. I wasnt angry. I was i was i was sad. Reporter last august raymonds friend, keyante murphy jr. , a mt. den high school graduate, with plans to join the marines, was shot and killed while walking a female friend home late one night. At vigils that followed, Raymond Heard whispers from some who wanted to take matters into their own hands and not leave justice to the police. That shocked me because thats not at all how i saw keyante. I didnt see him rolling with that kind of crowd of people who would try to put themselves above the law because thats not how he was. Reporter raymond desided a much more fitting response to such a dark act was to shine a light, literally. You see, while revisiting the spot, keyante was shot, raymond noticed just how dark it was at night. He contacted the city to see what he could do about it. A list of rules followed about making measurements, taking photographs, and collecting signatures. All of which raymond spent weeks doing. It was more than just, you know, doing something. It was helping communities and the people in them. I didnt know they were going to do all of this. Reporter raymonds petition asked for lights to be added to a single pole near the crime scene. The city responded, though, with much, much more. Last week lighting improvements were completed up and down the block. This admittedly shy 16yearold had gotten the attention of his city leaders and earned their respect in the process. I think what a positive role model this kid is for the community, for his friends. This young man chose to take a different course of action, to do better for the community, to make the community safer. Reporter raymond says he never expected his plan to work so well, though hes map it did. His was just a simple hope that this spot never be darkened by violence again. After the shooting of keyante murphy, police did release sketches of three people theyre looking for, but so far no arrests in the case. Garvin thomas, nbc bay area news. Maybe in a decade or so they want to have it out and about giving tours and going to the normandy for the dday honoring. I wont say celebration. True. Not a good day to be outside. Rain off and on not only today but the next several days as we get several storm systems moving in. Tracking rain moving across San Francisco, oakland, and this will continue to move off towards the east. Well see this moving toward Castro Valley and san ramon as we go into the next 20 minutes and also over toward livermore. You might already start to see some light rain moving in, but so far skipping around san jose. We will start to see that wet weather moving in later on this evening. At times it will be very hit or miss. So expecting a chance of rain for the rest of the day. Here we are at 3 00. We still have a pretty good covering of some light showers moving through. Not expecting anything that should cause any problems. We expect it will slow down the evening commute, though, and into tonight, still seeing some scattered rain moving through. Here we are starting out tomorrow morning and early afternoon. The rain gets more intense as we see the bright colors here on the futurecast showing some heavy rain. Also some gusty winds will be in the mix, and were expecting winds to pick up to about 35 to 50 Miles Per Hour at the same time that this heavy rain will be falling. So we will see this concern and there may be some issues there with some flooding as well. By sunday, well have another system moving in. That will start out in the north bay with some more intense rain and then spread farther to the south so that will add onto the weekend rainfall totals that were expecting. The rain futurecast shows the possibility of at least an inch and threequarters. Some spots may be at 2 1 2, close to 3 inches of rain so, flashflooding will be possible, also mudslides will be a concern. And winds, 35 to 50 Miles Per Hour. Be prepared for the possibility of not having power just temporarily until some of those trees get cleaned up. And in the sierra, chains will be required as we are looking at 1 to 3 feet of snow, but temperatures have been very warm and were still seeing some rain. This is a look at north star right now. The skiers are still out there. We have some rain drops on the camera lens. Into the weekend, though, that rain will switch over the snow. Once again if youre traveling there, it may not switch over until tomorrow afternoon. But then once it comes down between saturday night and monday morning we have the potential of 33 inches of snow at kirkwood. Some of the spots that may see the highest amount of snow.
