This is named after the 15yearold Saratoga High School student who was sexually assaulted at a party and later committed suicide. The center on juvenile and criminal justice opposes the bill. This bill would establish the first mandatory minimum sentences in our states juvenile justice system. These are sentences that we know from the adult system have been very ineffective. They have not reduced crime. Reporter audries mother says the proposed law would help victims. We feel that what were asking for, the twoyear minimum sentence, is completely reasonable. Its warranted. And the public wants this. Reporter now the lastminute lobbying is on with the california attorneys for criminal justice sending this letter to the chair of the assembly Public Safety committee. It says the bill is using audries death to wreak havoc on the juvenile justice system. Audries mother disagrees. She says the bill, which would also expand californias definition of rape to include the Sexual Assault of an unconscious person, will only help victims like her daughter.
