So how real is this threat . We sent our Senior Investigative reporter, stephen stock, in search of answers. Reporter we found proof these are legitimate concerns. But what worries Security Experts we talked with the most doesnt even require a real attack. Almost all the Voting Machines in the nation, including here in california, date back to the hanging chad debacle during the 2000 president ial election in florida. Everybody remembers that. Experts say those machines are still being used and are now vulnerable to computer hackers now, even though a large scale attack is improbable around the nation. What they worry most about, however, is the effect of a small scale attack or even a threat of one. Just the appearance of one. Do you really need a large scale attack to wreak havoc on the system . Do you have to hack thousands of Voting Machines . Probably not. Probably all you have to do is hack a few. And prove that they were hacked. Reporter tonight, we investigate voting vulnerability. We go to sacramento to ask the secretary of state and find out exactly what his office is doing to keep your right to vote secure. Thats tonight at 11 00 on nbc bay area news, see you then.
