The boxes are supposed to help companies be green and cut their carbon footprint, but are bloom boxes performing as promised . Vicky nguyen is here with that story. Reporter guys, think of bloom boxes as giant batteries. Theyre supposed to be a much cleaner source of energy than what we get from the traditional power grid, and every month a part of your pg e bill goes to a state program that gives rebates to companies that install bloom boxes. The question now, are they as green as advertised. When the sharks are off the ice or the concert has ended, 90 of the s. A. P. Centers power comes from these. Theyre called bloom boxes. They house fuel cells that turn natural gas into electricity and theyre made by bloom energy. The s. A. P. Reporter in delaware where the boxes have been in operation more than two years, data show they have only achieved 773 or better three months out of a 24month period. The average rate is 823, higher than blooms advertised number. Bloom declined numerous requests for an interview but in a Conference Call the company said the 773 figure is when the bloom boxes are brand new and co2 emissions increase as the boxes age. This is green washing. Reporter its not just delaware. We discovered records show y inconsistencies in santa clara county. Saying they would cut Carbon Emissions by five Million Pounds each year. But after we began asking questions, the county cut the savings in half, using a more conservative formula. We stand behind 2. 5 Million Pounds as a county. I couldnt speak for bloom. Reporter dave snow is the Deputy Director of facilities. He says the county expects to save 7 million over the next 20 years in energy costs. Data so far show the boxes are performing as promised in their first four months online. Its really about energy efficiency. Reporter but critics like levine say bloom has a pattern of overpromising and underdelivering. State regulators told us in an email that blooms first generation boxes did not perform as well as anticipated. They had an Emission Rate between 893 and 995. The ftc said greenwashing is making false or unsubstantiated environmental benefit claims may constitute annin fair or deceptive act but they say they cant comment on the complaints against bloom. Everyone wants to just believe its green, that its great, and its probably good technology. But its just not as good as they claim.
