Makes this wild life expert so upset. You said once i would happily eat the last panda on earth if you could spend the money on worth while. In all seriousness, why did you say that . Rock center gets under way. Good evening. Welcome to rock center. The first glimpse americans ever got of Oscar Pistorius was on this broadcast in the runup to the summer Olympic Games in london. We aired what became the defining profile of him reported by Mary Carrillo of nbc sports who traveled to south africa and got to know this unusual olympic athlete. Well, fast forward to this past week. His name and image are everywhere. His beautiful girlfriend is dead and now his future turns on whether his version of his story is believed. Tonight for us, mary cavio has traveled back to south africa to find out more about the woman whose death is at the center of this story. Oscar pistorius says that 29yearold girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp was the love of his life. She was also about to be a reality show star in this country. A cast member of tropic island. She was killed just days before the season premiere. These are exclusive outtakes from the show not seen in the United States until now. My name is reeva, and im a model. I have a law degree, as well, but right now im enjoying traveling and being behind the camera. Its what im passionate about. She grew up around horses in oceanside port elizabeth. Her father, a horse trainer, and while she loved riding, she had a terrible accident. Todays challenge is horseback riding down the beach and im really, really sad that i cant take part. Unfortunately, a few years ago i had a bad fall and i broke my back and my spine was fractured. I was in the hospital for about a month in traction and six months in a brace from here and all of the way down and i was strapped down and i was doing the robot for six months. And so she feared the physical challenges of the reality show. Crew members said they felt an immediate connection with her. Cameraman james boon. She never changed whether she was in front of the camera or off the camera. She was the same person. She was the genuine article. She was definitely the genuine article. This was reevas bedroom just as she left it in the house she shared with gina meyers. Gina and darren fresco were her best friends. She knew what to say whenever anything was bothering you. She would never come to you with a problem. Everyone would always go to her with a problem. She was a psychologist, a financial adviser, anything. It didnt matter what you needed to know she would give you an answer to it and it always seemed right. That was the frustrating thing. They knew reeva as a very happy person always. She was happy, and she was happy in the relationship. Oscars friend terry lee may witnessed their fast, flourishing romance which only began in november of last year. He loved reeva. He was so in love with reeva. Hes proud of taking her to events, of showing her to the world, to south africa. Reeva bragged on twitter about her new beau. He certainly doesnt need more followers, she wrote, but hes beautiful to look at and says some smart stuff, too. She tweeted about a shake oscar made for her. It was a favorite homemade concoction as we learned when we visited oscar last spring at his home. And as oscar dreamed of a future, finding ways to provide prosthetic limbs to those without means, so reeva dreamed of a future with her own purpose. Fighting south africas scourge of domestic violence. Reeva had previously been in an abusive relationship. Mike steenkamp is reevas uncle. She spoke out against domestic vealence. That was also big. She didnt tolerate it. She spoke out and she told her friends were going to stay in for it and well speak out about it. She had spoken about having a previously abusive relationship. She would never stand for anything like that again. If she said something once, you could bet your Bottom Dollar that that was it. On valentines eve, reeva was preparing to speak the next day on the importance of self worth to students at Sandown High School in john hanesburg. These are widely reported to be her own words. Be brave. Always see the positive. Make your voice heard. But as the world now knows she never gave that speech. Shot and killed by Oscar Pistorius who insists he thought she was an intruder. However, the prosecution strongly disagrees. This is pure premeditated murder. Yesterday a spokesman for the Prosecutors Office told us the shooting was a premeditated act of violence and that ballistic and forensic reports will prove it. So you still feel confident that theres damning forensic evidence that proves that oscar we have belief that there is forensic, damning evidence that can support our allegations. Is there any part of you or anyone in your family that thinks that oscar meant to do this to reeva . I cant answer that. I cant answer that, but nobody ever, ever saw it coming. There were no signs. Never. Never forewarned. She was an angel on earth, you know . Simmpewai, who was reevas publicist. He saw her career rocketing to stardom. Oscar obviously was already a hero and a superstar. You were taking pains to make sure reeva was separate from that, that she was going to be her own star. True. She was on the rise. She was on the rise. The star on the rise. My office and i had already started talks with different production houses and everyone was beginning to love this girl. I dont know anyone else like her. Those who knew her best paint a portrait of a very full life for someone so young, animal lover, law graduate, model, devoted friend, advocate. Mary carrillo reporting from south africa tonight for rock center and later tonight on this broadcast, a group of u. S. Marines and military families say they were abandoned by the marine corps when they developed a rare and very surprising disease. Dr. Nancy snyderman will have our investigation. Also, if its possible someones making a very persuasive, very provocative argument that were spending too much trying to save the panda population on earth. One thing people might say is who are you to play god . Who are you to decide that we shouldnt save the panda . Theyre already playing god. Theyre playing survival of the cutest in my books. Over 140 Big Companies have been hit. For years weve been warned the power grids, Water Systems and Financial Services could be next and it might not end as simple espionage or spying. Tonight we talk to the people who are fighting this war against hacking and those who have already been casualties in it. Our report from david faber. As a professional Intelligence Officer i stand in absolute awe at the depth, breadth, sophistication and persistence of the chinese espionage effort against the United States of america. Eneral michael hayden, a man who has run the cia and the nsa says the chinese are intent on building their economic empire by stealing american trade secrets. This is stealing american wealth. Its stealing american jobs. Its stealing american competitive advantage. Is the threat growing . Yes. It it grows daily and what were really fearing is these advanced persistent threats. The advanced persistent threat is the guy that comes every day, in china, reports to work and sits in that network. Undetected and extracting information. In a new report released this week the Cyber Security firm mandiant pinpointed where some of the most sophisticated hackers in china are working, in or around this building, a Chinese Military units headquarters on the outskirts of shanghai. This elite group of hackers has been dubbed the Shanghai Group. Theyve struck 141 times since 2006 across all sectors of the u. S. Economy. This is the first time such a group has been tracked right to the doorstep of the Peoples Liberation army. The Shanghai Group is not the first to be accused of cyber theft. Its scary. I mean, this is the problem. Its scarey. Brian shields, a Computer Security specialist suspected the chinese of hacking into his company as early as 2004. He worked for nortel, a giant Canadian Telecommunications company. A success story, nortel made cell phone equipment and at its height the company employed 20,000 people in the u. S. How can you compete when the other guys arent competing the same way. Heres how shields says his company got hacked. A nortel employee saw, it was downloaded by brian mcfadden. He noticed that mr. Mcfadden had downloaded some documents and when he got the email back and said i dont know what youre talking about. So it was mcfadden downloading documents, but it wasnt actually mcfadden. Thats correct. Hunting for the culprit, shields team followed a string of digital clues that led them to the other side of the world. The attack, much to their surprise, was launched from a server in shanghai. And then what . So now youre suddenly, do you remember your reaction at the time . My eyes bulged. Yeah. This is really bad. Shields and a team of investigators discovered an attacker had stolen the passwords of mcfadden and other top executives including the ceo. More than 1,400 documents were stolen containing valuable company secrets. What companies were buying, how much. They could know where we saw our future product. They could know where we saw our profitability. The team was never able to identify who controlled the server, but they tracked it to shanghai, the same city where the Chinese Military is now alleged to be running a vast Cyber Espionage operation. Whats more, a Chinese Telecommunications company in direct competition with nortel called huawei has been accused of having ties to the Chinese Military. Its founder say former Technology Specialist for the Peoples Liberation army. Its time that somebody speaks up and says this is whats going on and Corporate America better get a grip because if theyre not their cookie jar will be stolen and the bad guys will get away scotfree. Theres no justice here. Huawei denies stealing from nortel or any other company, saying it has the highest respect for intellectual property of others. Most insiders never learned about the chinese spying because nortel never disclosed it. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2009 and is no longer in business. Its a new age, new wave technologybased organized crime. One of the most serious examples of cyber theft is perhaps one of the most embarrassing. Because we at rsa were attacked last march, my colleagues and i feel this is as personally as anyone in this room. Art coviello is executive of rsa, it protects most fortune 500 companies in the u. S. From cyber attacks, but in 2010 the Shanghai Group breached rsas own security. If the chinese can attack one of the premiere Security Companies in the world, how can anybody be safe . Any company can be attacked. Sure enough, the attackers used the information stolen from rsa to try to break into its clients networks including lockheed martin, the largest defense contractor in america. There was a connection between the breach at rsa and the breach at lockheed martin. Although lockheed was breached, nothing was lost from lockheed and thats the only known attack we have thats been reported using the information that was stolen. Just this week, a Chinese Government spokesperson told rock center it does not steal from any corporations and called the mandiant report on the Shanghai Group unprofessional. Translator in fact, china has engaged with the u. S. , uk, russia, germany and other countries to crackdown on cyber attacks. But top players in the intelligence world are not buying it. Hayden, now a private Security Consultant says its time to hold china accountable. Dont treat me like a child. We know what youre doing and we have good evidence with regard to what youre doing and if you continue to do what you do, actions will have consequences and we make it part of a broader package of the american relationship. If we dont do this something cat strofk is going to happen over here. David faber of cnbc reporting for tonights rock center, up next for us this evening, dr. Nancy snyderman investigates how it is a group of marines and military families came down with a very rare disease. Victor victor i got your campbells chunky soup. Mom . Whos mom . They signed up to serve, wearing the uniform wherever the corps needs them to go and that means their family members, as well. But at the center of this story is a very troubling controversy. Upwards of a million marines and their family members were exposed to contaminated Drinking Water over 35 years. And tonight, dr. Nancy snyderman investigates the cases of marines who have developed a rare and frightening disease, male Breast Cancer and say the government hasnt done enough to help them. The first thing that went through my mind was what contest in hell did i win to deserve this . I dont drink. Mike partain got the shock of his life five years ago when he was diagnosed with Breast Cancer at the age of 39. And this is what it looks like to have male Breast Cancer. That he got Breast Cancer is the all is surprising. You can see the calsifications. It is so rare for every 100 women that get it, just one man will, but its how mike says he got Breast Cancer thats the biggest shock of all. Maybe youre just unlucky. I thought that at first, but that all changed three months after i was diagnosed. I went from being an average, ordinary person to being a Breast Cancer patient to finding out that the place that i was born was contaminated. The son of a marine, he was born at camp lejeune, north carolina, one of the largest and most storied marine cabases in e country. The entire time my mother was drinking with me we were drinking high levels of tetrachloroethylene, trichloroethylene and benzene in the water. He says camp lejeune caused his Breast Cancer and hes not alone. How many of you, by show of hand, believe the United States marines are in some way in part responsible for you getting Breast Cancer. These men lived or served at camp lejeune and have been diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Hard to believe that we have male Breast Cancer. Embarrassing . Well, it was kind of embarrassing at first to tell others. Its more frustration because no one knew what to do with us or me. I cant speak for the rest of the guys, but the sdprs nurses didnt know how to treat me and that was unnerving and scary. All six have had a breast remove, left to live with the cruel scars of mastectomy, most, like mike muller, said they have suffered mood swings from hormone therapy. Now that im on tamoxifen im going through some sort of male menopause or something. There was a time when i cried every day and i bought an apron and got a kitchen aid and started baking bread and they chemically reduced me to a grandmother. You got your grandkids coming up to you saying, poppop youve only got one boob. I dont like wearing tshirts. He chad was diagnosed at age 53. It was devastating for me. It messed my whole life up as far as im concerned. The story of how these men found each other began after mike partain saw a news report in 2007. A former marine named Jerry Ensminger was telling congress how his daughter 9yearold jenny died of leukemia. Every time they stuck a needle in her bone in her hip to pull out bone marrow i held her. And that he believed her death was caused by the Drinking Water at camp lejeune. I can assure you that there are many more individuals and families who are now literally spread out all over this country, if not this world, that are wondering what happened to me. I immediately thought my knees buckled. I grabbed the back of the couch and i sat there and said oh, my god. This is what happened. Mike learned there was a long history of suspicion about the water at camp lejeune. Is it your premise that the United States marine corps knew there was contaminated water and chose not to let people know about it . Their own documents show clearly that they were warned beginning in 1980 by . By their own scientists that they hired that the water was contaminated. Those documents hes referring to were produced when the marines started routinely testing tap water in 1980 and eventually found high levels of cancercausing chemicals. In one case over 280 times the acceptable standard. They chose to keep those wells on for whatever reason and did not begin shutting the wells down until 1984. Officials say thats because it took them four years exactly which wells were poisoned and once they were located they were shut down immediately. Some of those chemicals were linked to a drycleaner offbase that had been contaminating the water since 1953. It has since closed. But the worst contamination was caused directly by the marine corps because of its industrial waste practices and leaking fuel storage tanks. This document released just last december by the cdc details how over 1 million gallons of fuel seeped into the ground, contaminating well water. The time that i found my tumor they knew i had been exposed and no one had told me. Thats what angers me about this. Marine corps officials declined several requests for an oncamera interview. In an email to nbc news, the corps acknowledges the water was contaminated, but says that reliable, Scientific Evidence is lacking to prove one way or another whether it caused illness. However, one of the nations most respected experts on cancer and the environment sees it differently. How would you characterize the level of contamination at camp lejeune . Well, the level in the Drinking Water was the highest that ive ever seen. University of massachusetts epidemiologists dr. Clap has researched. Thats occurred and that amount of time has lapsed. He was also involved in another highprofile environmental case, one linking contaminated Drinking Water and childhood leukemia in willburn, massachusetts. It was the basis for the book and later the hit movie a civil action. Good evening, mr. Riley. Would you care for a glass of water. Ive been working on this for 30 years and ive never heard of a community that had the level of contaminants that they had at camp lejeune and male Breast Cancer may also to be the hei t highest thats been seen anywhere. Other diseases include cancers of the kidney, lung and blared as well as childhood leukemia. Even though the marine corps says theres not enough proof these diseases were caused by the water, congress did not agree, and in 2012 the president signed a law creating a fund to provide Health Benefits to camp lejeune benefits that can show the contamination made them sick, but these men havent seen a dime. How many of you have submitted claims to the Veterans Administration for money . How many have been given anything . Fat chance there. Tom gervase says the clock is ticking. I have stage four terminal cancer. My survival is minimal. What i worry about is my wife and her being taken care of by the va and the marine corps if at all possible. Ive just recently lost my wife, but if theres anything that could be done to help my kids, that would be helpful. And did you hear anything . No. Ive been denied six times. They are waiting on a report from the cdc which they believe will help them prove it was the water that made them sick, and that the marine corps is, in fact, responsible. Dr. Chris poitier is working on the report for the cdc. Can you tell me at this point how many people you believe have come into contact with contaminated water. Our estimates are between half a million to a million people. Half a million to a million . Correct. The camp lejeune family says the cdc analysis is taking way too long. Theyre arc kugz the agency and military of stonewalling. I understand the need to get data right, but while youre waiting for the final report to come out in the spring there are men still being denied benefits. Whats the delay . Weve always felt that the marines at camp lejeune deserve the best that we can do. But theyre not getting that. Yes, they are. From us theyre getting the best we can do. Weve done every study we can. I have pushed my staff and pushed my staff to get it done as fast as possibly because i think we are late on this one, but we will deliver a product that will answer some questions. In its email to nbc news the marine corps said we recognize that some of our marines, sailors and their families have experienced Health Issues they believe are associated with water they drank in the past at camp lejeune. Our hearts go out to those individuals no matter what the cause. Officials say they have tried to notify all of the people who were potentially exposed to the contaminated water, but Breast Cancer patient terri torny says the marines never warned him that he might be at risk. I pay my taxes every year. They follow me, you know . They know where im at. Right. If they want to find out something, they want to find out who an individual is they have the capability. Its all a matter of priorities. They have the capability to find out anything about anyone that lived there or walked there, however, its do they want to . If youre going to hang your hat as an institution on honor and integrity. Right. When Something Like this happens, youve got to step up to the plate. They had their orders to protect us. When is the leadership of the marine corps going to stand up and say we made a mistake . Nancy snyderman is here with us in the studio. Youve been working on this for months and the reason weve been so passionate about getting this on the air, at least me. Nobody joins the marine corps to get rich. They do it to serve the country. And if you join the marine corps you expect to go into battle and maybe take a bullet. You dont expect the Drinking Water to call you an illness decades later. Are we at least assured that today, on the grounds at camp lejeune, that the water flows cleanly from the tap . I can tell you that the marine corps says theyre testing the water, but i can also tell you that this is an active super fund site. So how you reconcile those two as of this evening i cannot tell you. The gentlemen have said, we owe them our very best is absolutely right. And we owe them more answer, frankly. You bet. Thank you very much for doing that story. When we come back here tonight does the expensive effort to save an entire species of animals however beloved come at the expense of others . Of others . Chevron has been developing energy here for decades. We need to protect their environment. We have a strict quarantine system to protect the integrity of the environment. Forty years on, its still a classa nature reserve. Its our job to look after them. Its my job to look after it. Welcome back. As weve said here in advance tonight, have a provocative story for you this evening that pictures as widely adored all of those characteristics make them almost look like a human infant so that infantile appearance engenders us to just want to protect, protect, protect. And protecting the giant panda is what this place is all about. It looks like a zoo, but its really a Panda Breeding center with so few pandas left in the wild, scientists here have been breeding pandas in captivity. Its one of the most massive efforts ever made to save a species from extinction. The center was started in 1987 with just six wild pandas and more than a hundred have been born, and many are on loan to zoos all over the world. Those zoos pay china up to 1 million a year to rent pandas. More funding comes from the Chinese Government, from wild life groups and from tourists, millions and millions of dollars a year. Some of that money are spent just teaching pandas the basics since males dont know much about math, theyre sometimes shown instructional videos, panda porn, if you will. And females are routinely anesthetized and artificially inseminated. These vats are filled with panda sperm. I started working for panda bears. Wrong who is in charge of the Breeding Program is the challenge is the females can only get pregnant one day a year and sometimes the window of opportunity is even shorter. How long is that window . The shortest one can last for a couple of hours. A couple of hours . Yes. So in one year, maybe only a couple of hour when the female can get pregnant . Yes. Yes. And heres the result of all that work. These cubs are just 4 months old. We were given the rare opportunity to scrub up and go into the nursery where keepers watch over them. Hi. Hey. These little guys spend their days sleeping, eating and this little one is just learning how to walk. Theyre so cute and so little. Each cub is weighed daily to make sure its growing well. This cub got a stomach massage to help the digestive system. Youre imitating what a mother would do. You are too cute. Now you can touch it. Can i . Hi. Cubs here spent time with their morgues every day, but theyll be separated after six months if the mother is being bred again and the cycle repeats itself. Its almost become like an industry trying to make as many pandas as possible. I would say that thats a fair way to explain it. An industry dedicated to saving the panda. What could be wrong with that . But what if we told you a growing number of scientists are saying something that sounds like heresy to panda lovers. All that money were spending is a giant mistake. I think theyre pouring millions and millions of dollars into one species of albeit, incredibly cute animal is salacious. A wild life expert for the bbc is one of the more vocal critics. We met him at his cottage in southern england. With up to 200 species going extinct every day, he says it makes no sense to spend so much money trying to save just one. I dont want the panda to be extinct. I dont want anything to be extinct on my watch. But ultimately, lets not waste vast amounts of money trying to prevent it when we being use that money far more efficiently, far more optimally somewhere else. What about the argument that if you take the panda out of the equation, if the panda is not the symbol on the masthead, nobody gives money . I think if they took the panda off the letterhead other animals would fill that void pretty quickly and very sadly, they could replace that with a tiger cub and people would give generously. One thing people might say is who are you to play god . Who are you to decide that we shouldnt save the panda . Who are they to play god . They picked the cute cuddly one. Why dont they pick a snail or a caterpillar or a fly . Theyre already playing god. Theyre playing survival of the cutest in my books. Chris views on pandas have never been popular. He got hate mail when he suggested we should let pandas die if thats what happens without the money. You said some outlandish things. You said at one point id happily eat the last panda on either if i could have the money component panda conservation to put it to somewhere more worthwhile. Uhhuh. Their is no likelihood of me eating a panda. I needed people to think. To think about this. All those pandas china is breeding will likely only ever be zoo animals because theres nowhere else for them to live in the wild. The wild pandas only natural habitat is being swallowed up by chinas massive population and sprawling industrial growth. Pandas once lived in an area this size and it shrunk to this with some areas protected by the Chinese Government. This whole valley used to be panda habitat and not anymore. No one really knows exactly how many giant pandas live in the wild in china. The last count they did ten years ago found 1600. Theyre in the middle of a new panda census right now. Scientists at chengdu are helping about that census. Theyre also worried about the numbers in the wild, but unlike the critic, theyre convinced that the money being spent on these captive pandas will help restore the species. Will we pull pandas back from the brink of extinction. James ayala is an animal behavioral specialist from new york who work at chengdu. Theres controversy about pandas and chengdu in general. I say come and see the pandas and the care these animals get is astounding. They get special treats and personal training. This is maylan from atlanta, right . Born at the atlanta zoo. Zoo atlanta. Lets see if we can get him to stand up. Good boy. Theres an apple in it for you. Good boy. The training makes it possible for humans to interact with pandas and keep them healthy. Go ahead. Open good boy. So we can check the conditions of his teeth, too, to see if he has chipped teeth and chipped canines. And take a look at what this panda can do. Shes been trained to reach out and grab a metal bar to allow veterinarians to draw her blood without having to anesthetize her. These pandas have never lived on their own, but there is a plan to reintroduce captive pandas into the wild. It kind of is pandas in the mist. Sarah took us to a new facility in the countryside where reintroduction work is just beginning. Its a difficult process that takes years. Would it be fair to reintroduce these guys into the wild right now . No. For us to release them now we dont know what would happen to them. Theyd likely die. Yeah. Its a very high likelihood that they would. When this panda was released in china in 2006 he died in ten months. He didnt know how to be a wild male giant panda and he walked into breeding encounters. He got cornered up in a tree, right . And eventually fell to his death . Right. Chris believes the whole reintroduction project is doomed because there just isnt room in the world for wild pandas anymore. And to have them as a zoo animal. To have them only living in captivity. No point. I need to know in my heart when im falling asleep in the evening that out in some damp,er have dant blade of bamboo theres a cozy panda sleeping through the night and it needs to be a wild panda, just having it as an exhibit is just its pointless. But sarah isnt ready to give up on an animal so beloved by so many. We humans pushed giant pandas to the brink, she says and its up to us to find a way to save them. I think pandas are symbolic. We all love them. We all want to share the earth with them, and if we truly cannot save space for giant pandas, what does that say about us as a species and how can we have hope for any of the others if bee cant save the one that we profess to love the most. As we said, provocative story. Kate snow report from china tonight. Up next after the break. Another animal, if there were a medal of otter wed have a nominee here. Delivering whatever the world needs, when it needs it. After all, whats the point of talking if you dont have something important to say . If you dont have something important to say . With the bing it on challenge to show google users what theyve been missing on bing. Lets bing it on. [fight bell ding, ding] how many here are google users .
