Lets stop on a Tuesday Morning with our top story. The mounting questions and concerns over what to do with people returning from the front lines of the fight against ebola. This, in the wake of the controversial quarantine of a nurse in new jersey. Well talk to that states governor, Chris Christie, in an exclusive live interview in a moment. First, National Correspondent kate snow has the latest. Kate, good morning to you. Good morning, matt. After arriving back in her home state of maine, theres now disagreement about whether or how long the nurse has to remain in isolation in her home in that state. What should happen when Health Care Workers return from africa, after treating ebola patients . Should they be quarantined in a hospital if they arrive at a u. S. Airport with a fever . She found herself dueling with governor Chris Christie over this national debate. She comes back to the United States and they treat her as if shes a criminal. My job is not to represent her. Its to represent the people of new jersey. Reporter hitchcock did register a fever but says she was just flustered. She was released monday after 24 hours symptom free. To the extent governor christie made this a political act so that he could show he was in charge in protecting the people of new jersey, i think he picked the wrong individual with kaci hickox. No one likes being in the hospital. No one likes being in the hospital. The fact is this woman presented, after directly in contact with folks having ebola. Reporter on monday with so many states doing their own thing, the centers for disease cell issued new guidelines, suggesting four categories for people entering the u. S. From Ebola Outbreak countries, those with high risk would stay home and stay in contact with health departments. The states are trying to sort all this out by themselves. What took so long . Why did the federal government not give anybody guidance . The whole evolution of this ebola epidemic in africa and now the importation here is really an evolving, moving target in which you have to rely on new experiences. Dont take anything off. Reporter hospitals across the country, like the mayo clinic, are doing drills, trying to make sure theyre ready if someone comes in with ebola. As for u. S. Military personnel serving in west africa, the government said monday all soldiers will be quarantined on a military base in italy for 2 21 days before returning home. Soldiers will be restricted to a complex with barracks, Dining Facility and gym. The head of the nih told me it was easier to make a blanket rule for the military because theyre used to being on a base or confined to barracks. The bigger challenge has been how to handle civilians. Matt, a little bit of good news. The nurse, amber vinson from dallas, treated at Emory University in atlanta, is expected to be released today. That is good news. Thanks, kate. New jerseys governor Chris Christie is here with us exclusively. Good morning, governor. How are you . Im well, matt. Thank you. Along comes kaci hickox. She complained loudly about the treatment she received. Did you get more than you bargained for with miss hickox . Matt, i cant imagine that anyone would find it an experience they were looking for, to have to spend three days in a hospital. I understand that. But the fact is, matt, that she presented at the airport as someone who had contact, direct contact with folks infected with the ebola virus and then she became symptomatic. The fact is that person has to go to the hospital, has to be treated. Cdc ordered her to be tested for the ebola virus based upon her symptoms. When she was no longer symptomatic and the tests came back negative, she was released to continue her quarantine at home. Let me make sure i understand that. Was she september back to maine because she no longer had a fever, any symptoms or was she sent back to maine because she went out and hired a talented lawyer like norm siegel and was throat threatening legal action against the state . You used the word talented, matt, not me. And no, thats been the policy all along. If she never presented with any symptoms, our policy would have been to send her back to maine and ask her to quarantine at home in maine. Its because she presented with symptoms and was tested, and that testing was ordered with the cdc in conjunction with the state of new jersey. The policy remains in effect, right . I want to read to you what the doctor from nih said yesterday. He called the mappedtory quarantine of all Health Care Workers who come in contact with ebola patients in west africa and then return draconian, that you and Governor Cuomo got it wrong. The doctor said this. Quote, christie and cuomo are both really smart guys, yet theyve decided to ignore science, evidence and decades of careful observations made by those brave enough to have gone to africa to assist in the control of these epidemics. How do you respond to that . Well, ill respond to it this way, matt. First off, now six other states have joined us as well, both republican and democratic governors, as has the United States military. As has dr. Bruce bugler, who is a Nobel Prize Winning physician who says he favors our policy. The fact is that the cdc has been incremental. This newest guidance, from my perspective, is incredibly confusing. By the way, whats the difference when someone is considered to be high risk . You dont want them on Public Transportation, you dont want them at public gatherings and you want them to work from home. That sounds like quarantine to me, matt and, listen is it possible that youre on the wrong side of science here but the right side of Public Opinion . No, im going to be on the right side of both, ultimately, matt. I understand that the cdc has been behind on this. Folks got infected in texas because they were behind and were not going to have folks being infected in new jersey and other states in this country. Governors ultimately have the responsibility to protect the Public Health and Public Safety of the people within their borders when folks come in with this problem. Lets be clear, matt. All were talking about is folks who have been directly in contact, as Health Care Workers, with folks who are actively infected with the virus. Not all travelers the reporting has been very sloppy on this, matt. And yet a lot of people ive talked to, health care experts, say this. The best way to prevent new cases from ebola from coming to the United States is to stop the outbreak in west africa. You start attaching 21 days to the commitment of any Health Care Worker who wants to go there and help the crisis there, isnt that going to have a Chilling Effect . No, its not, matt. These folks go over there because they want to help and make a difference. And we applaud them. But by the same token, when theyre in direct contact with people actively with the ebola virus, asking them to quarantine at home for 21 days, unless theyre symptomatic, i dont think, is draconian and i think the doctor is responding, unfortunately, as are many people from the cdc, in a hyperbolic way because theyve been wrong before and now are incrementally taking steps to the policy we put in effect in new jersey and six other states have put in effect and the joint chiefs of staff have put in effect. Were all wrong and theyre right, matt . Were trying to be careful here. This is common sense. The members of the American Public believe it is common sense and we are not moving an inch. Our policy hasnt changed and our policy will not change. Real, real quickly, all this takes place about a week from the mid term elections. A lot of people would like to infuse this situation with politics. Will you say to me right now that there is no political blame to be assessed for what has happened with ebola in this country at this point . Matt, im not here to discuss political blame. And when you look at what has happened here in the different states that have adopted this, youve had both republican and democratic governors adopting this. Governor dayton in minnesota, Governor Cuomo in new york with me in new jersey, governor scott, a republican in florida. Democratic governors in virginia and maryland where im sitting this morning. The fact is youve got more democratic governors doing this than republican governors. This is a nonpartisan issue, matt. Here is the bottom line as governor. My first responsibility is to protect the Public Health and safety of the people of new jersey. And i will not submit to any political pressure in doing anything less than i believe is necessary. Were now backed up by the American Military and a nobel prizewinning doctor. So, i understand theres all kind of protestations from the cdc but we want stricter things than what they have been willing to impose and now theyre incrementally, matt, moving toward our position. Whats the difference of telling someone who has been a Health Care Worker at high risk that they cant go in public places, Public Transportation and we want them to work from home, whats the difference between that and a quarantine . They dont want to admit that were right and they were wrong. Im sorry about that. Questions that will continue to be asked. Governor, i really appreciate your time this morning. Thank you so much. Thats what dozens of homeowners in hawaii are going through this morning as the lava flow slowly advances. Nbcs Hallie Jackson has the latest on that. Hallie, good morning. Reporter good morning, hoda. The local Elementary School here will be closed indefinitely, starting tomorrow, because its in the path of this lava flow. As are a number of homes, some of them on the street behind me. Officials say they will let the people watch the lava burn their home, if they want, part of what they call the grieving process here. You can hear it burning, crackling. Methane explosions on the lavas leading edge, shaking the ground underneath, red hot river wider than a football field, moving in on the town of pahoa, melting hundreds of yards over the last 24 hours. Up until now theres always been hope that it would stop, change direction. The minute it affects the first structure or home, this is real. Reporter the lees know its real. Their home could be next. Where is the lava flow from here . Right over there. Reporter thats where we went. The lava just past the tree line near property thats been in this family five generations. In the backyard, a bulldozer building a berm. Whats it for . To help maybe divert the lava around and go downhill. Reporter you think it will work . It might. Were hoping. Reporter for weeks this flow has been making its way toward pahoa after a volcanic eruption in june. It crossed a local road and then a cemetery on the edge of town, reality check for people here. Some already packing up and leaving. It could eventually get the whole town of pahoa. You deal with so much different types of stress, you know, with this whole lava situation, yeah. And, first of all, its now coming to take your home that you worked so hard for all these years. We dont know what were going to do but we just take it day by day. Reporter day by day and, really, hour by hour at this point. Officials say its tricky to predict when this lava flow, this river of lava might cross the main highway here because its speeding up and slowing down depending on terrain. People here say theyre ready. Hallie jackson, thank you. Matt, you know about that area. We have experience with kilauea and her lava flow. Back in had 2000 we did the show from that lava flow. We wept out ant out and didrogr and by the time we went back to get our cars and our trucks and the lava flow had cut off the road and we had to walk an extra mile around to get back to our vehicle. Its very unpredictable. Then the lava flow stole your cars. Right. Shes a mean volcano, kilauea. As we mentioned, josh elliott is in for natalie this morning. Were happy about that. But you start with troubling news. We do. Isis has gained access to chemical weapons and is using them against kurdish fighters in syria. U. S. Secretary of state john kerry says the reports are now under investigation. Meantime, isis on monday released another propaganda video, featuring british hostage john cantley, photographer kidnapped in 2012. In the video, cantley indicates that isis controls large sectors of that border town of kobani. U. S. Counterterrorism Officials Say that assertion is false. And the rob ford era is over in toronto. John it tori, a moderate conservative, was elected as mayor, taking 40 of the vote on a promise to unite a city in scandal and turmoil. San jose state students are remembering one of their classmates killed by a car in front of his fraternity house. Dozens of Fraternity Members held a memorial. Earlier this morning Ventura County sheriffs deputy was hit and killed by a hit and run driver. The deputy was doing a traffic stop on northbound 101 when he was hit by a car. The car sped away but crashed a short distance away. The driver was taken into custody. The driver has not been identified but he was an 11year veteran of the force. Janet shamlian is at the stadium this morning. What can you tell us . Reporter more than 75,000 people were packed into this stadium for denvers last game. Among them a colorado dad attend ing his first broncos game, and he seems to have simply vanished without a trace. This morning, there are no clues and his friends and family are appealing for help. Missing at mile high, a colorado dad, Paul Kitterman, gone without a trace from a stadium packed with tens of thousands of fans. It happened as the broncos played the chargers thursday night. Somebody you can count on to do whatever you need. And if he knows were waiting for him, hell be there. Reporter but Paul Kitterman wasnt there for his stepson jared, who was left there waiting as the game ended and the crowd emptied. This photo was taken just before half time, the last time the group saw kitterman. Just a perfect day, perfect situation. There was really nothing to be wrong. Reporter it was a big night for the 53yearold colorado rancher, his first broncos game. As excited as he was, he never returned to his seat during the second half, or the groups meeting place. We figured we would run into him. Maybe he went to the truck. We would still find him outside, sitting on a bench outside the stadium. Reporter kitterman didnt have a cell phone or any credit cards on him, says jared, and he was only carrying about 50 in cash. Denver police say theres no evidence of a crime. Were looking at tapes and things like that to determine where he might have gone. Obviously, its a mystery and were not sure. Reporter those who know kitterman say hes a standup kind of guy, a hard worker, with no known alcohol or drug problems. Looking at the stadium tapes might tell us something. Reporter this morning, his friends and his son are desperate for answers. I want him to know that were worried about him and for whatever reason hes gone, just to let us know that hes okay. Thats all. Reporter there are a lot of cameras in this stadium and those recordings have now been turned over to the Denver Police department. They say theyre reviewing them for clues. And he still hasnt come back, the panic that would set in. An amazing story. New, chilling information on that Deadly School shooting near seattle. Investigators now saying the young gunman targeted his victims by inviting them to lunch. Nbcs joe friar has more on that story. Joe, good morning. Reporter good morning, hoda. Investigators say that the gunman sent Text Messages to the victims, asking them to join him for lunch. Witnesses say he then shot five students before taking his own life. Investigators say they still dont know why Jaylen Fryberg shot five of his closest friends, including two cousins at Marysville Pilchuk High School but now believe it was planned. The information weve got is that five people that were targeted were invited to the table. Its our understanding he did so via texting. Nate heckendorf says he saw fryberg invite another student to lunch. Before the shooting on friday morning. Oot he asked, hey, do you want to go to lun of with me . I have no one else to sit with and my friends looked at me and said no, ive got to go to fifth period. Reporter he said fortunately his friend was not in the cafeteria when the shooting happened but alan perez was there. He witnessed the tragedy and said frybergs victims did not appear to be random. It seemed like he kind of came to the school with set targets on who he wanted to kill. And he didnt really shoot at anyone else. Reporter in the end, two victims were killed, zoe galasso and gia soriano, both 14 years old. Shaylee chuckulnaskit and Andrew Fryberg are still in critical condition. Nate hatch is awake and breathing on his own. He says, i love you and i forgive you, jaylen. Rest in peace. Detectives says the gun was registered to a family member. Were going to start with what were calling monkey business. This is your favorite story. I love this. This is a revealing experiment that grabbed our attention. It was done a couple of years ago at the Language Research center, part of Georgia State university. Heres how it works. There are two monkeys in sidebyside compartments. Both need to perform a task, handing over a rock to get a treat. The monkey on the left gets a cucumber. Yes. Was it something your parents had in the water at your house . Well, when everyone tries to be funny, theyre accidentally funny. But yeah, you know, wit was kind of important at our dinner table. You had to take goodnatured teasing. Its a very boston thing to be able to play along and have a good sense of humor about yourself. You write a little bit about divorce, which i dont really care about the actual divorce, but the way you described it, where you said its like putting everything you care about on a blanket and tossing it up in the air. And by the way, you probably recognize half the guys who are working in this studio, because half of them have worked for snl. Yeah, this crew and i have partied many, many places in new york. Did you know when you were peeking through that window that one day you were going to work there . You know, i dont know if i knew that, but i did have a sense of i dont know, i had a sense that it wasnt crazy to think that. Yeah. I mean, there are certainly moments still where i cant believe my life. And even when i would walk down the halls of snl and look at everybody who was in the cast, its pretty crazy and intense. But you have to kind of bake it until you make it. You have to believe you can be there. I love that skit. I always think for a young actor or comedian, walking down that hallway on the eighth floor and seeing the portraits must be a freakout moment. It is. Its like the hall of president s, the hall of comedy president s. And you have to, again, you have to kind of believe you deserve to be there. You have to just fake it until you make it. Parks and rec, golden globe award for that. Youve called getting that the pudding. Yes. Describe that. In my book, i talk about awards being like pudding. And you think you really want it, and youre just like, give me that pudding. Yes. You just want to taste it. And then you realize that like everything else, its nice to be included at the table, but if you get the pudding, it doesnt matter either way. In the coming months, you and tina will go back and you will host the Golden Globes for a third time in a row. Yes. You sure dont mind the roses. Now researchers in georgia with some time and money on their hands are studying the psychology behind all of those personal photographs. So, what might your selfie say about you . Heres nbcs gabe gutierrez. Reporter theyre everywhere, from kimye to beyonce, even to the president , selfportraits for the digital age. Sometimes its just you feel like you look good in a certain light and youre like, ive got to capture this moment. I dont know why youd want to be in a picture by yourself, like, oh, look, i look great. I just dont understand them. Reporter ellens selfie at oscars is the most retweeted photo ever. Nick cannon and Julianne Hough shattered the world record for the most selfies in an hour, 283. In the uk, this 21yearold is known as the king of selfies, racking up millions of fans online. Its a form of communication with simple selfexpression. Reporter so it was only a matter of time before researchers at the university of georgia began studying selfies. Its just something weve never seen before, well, at least at this massive scale. Reporter professor Keith Campbell is leading a team of students, analyzing the selfies of 300 respondents. We have people take selfies in a lab and then see if we can detect narcissism from some of these selfize. Reporter based on previous research, he says there are three main reasons people take selfies. One, selfabsorption, two, a social connection, and three, art. The first selfie ever is credited to this amateur photographer back in 1839. But with the smartphone revolution, digital portraits have exploded. And the rest of the time i just kind of walk through the crew, and they put their heads down and avert their eyes and stuff like that. I dont mind that. I dont mind that. Were you nervous at all about that when you got up there for the opening monologue . Well, youre always nervous. Thats what makes you good. Thats the fuel. You have to you have to get in there and put it on the line. But its like oldfashioned television, man. Its the only thing like it. Its like your show of shows. Its like texaco theater, you know, it really is a throwback. And you really feel it when youre in that room and youre reaching sketches cold. Youve never even seen the characters, never had time to read the sketches. It is so exciting. And from the third day on, you are not even in your shoes. Theyre pulling you out of your shoes to go places. Youre not in control. Its a wonderful creative experience. And the cast is really talented. And the writers are young and healthy. I feed off the blood of the living, matt. I love the sketch about the carrey family reunion. What was it like to stand there and watch basically your comedic resume walking onto the set . This is the worlds first true penitentiary, a prison designed to make people remorseful. Reporter saw its first inmate in 1829, housing thousands of undesirables over the years, including villains like al capone. They gave him some special treatment while he was inside. Reporter with every cell designed for solitary confinement, prisoners spent most days in complete isolation. They thought it would bring out the best in people. Today we know it was more likely to drive them insane. Reporter eastern state is believed to be one of the most haunted places in the world. Gave you gloves so i could show you our death ledger. This morning, we are cutting down your cooking time for dinner and party times with the help of the one and only Barefoot Contessa. Her new book is called make it ahead. Good morning. Good morning, hoda. You said one of the surprising questions you get is can i make it ahead of time . People want to make christmas cookies in july and freeze them and defrost them. You cant. But you can make the bread ahead. Tricks along the way. You think for a lot of things its better if i make it fresh right there. But you want to be enjoying your guests and not cooking all the time. Exactly. You have three things we can make ahead. A pork tenderloin. I wrap it in im going to dry it a little, put seasonings like salt and rosemary and thyme all the way down. Smells delicious. So it really flavors it. Wrap the whole thing in proscuitto. Looks delicious. Tie it up, turn it over like this. And we actually have one already tied. Okay. This is the key. You can make it ahead assemble it. Put it on a plate. Wrap the whole thing. Put this one on, too. Wrap the whole thing in plastic wrap. How long can that keep . A day or so in the refrigerator. Cook it the night before and pop it in the oven . The final instructions on a postit note. Roast High Temperature 20 to 30 minutes until the internal temperature is right. Can we slice into that . I think we can. I think we need to see if this is any good. Just like that. Get you a little piece. Just like that. While im tasting this no string allowed. No strings attached. I got you. Oh, my god. Its so simple to do. Heaven. I just did the whole thing. Lets talk apple chutney. We serve it with apple ch chutney so it has that sweet and sour thing. Granny smith apples in. Vinegary thing, its so good. Sweet apples and vinegar. You pop that in . Put it in the container, put the lid on. Its got to be like four or five days it can last easily. This surprised me. Nobody likes mashed potatoes, right . How early can you make those . I make them in advance. Mashed potatoes, yukon gold that i cook with garlic. I add garlic and herb goat cheese right to the thing. Then i take it and put it in a look at that. Big serving dish like this and i refrigerator it. And then, just before im going to put it on the table, i take parmesan cheese, sprinkle it on top and tut it on the oven. How long do you heat that up for . 30 minutes to heat up. Does it taste the same as it would if so creamy. Really . Make sure you have enough cream, sour cream and butter in it to make sure it stays really moist. I have some over here. Do you . After the cornbread. Okay. I make cornbread ahead, too, which you think has to be made immediately. Fresh. I wrap it in plastic and then i slice it and toast it. One piece at a time . Robert kincaid on the left in this photo was born in 1969. He was delivered by the doctor there in the center. He recently had surgery at the same hospital to insert a new aortic valve for his heart. This is a roux which is a base of a good gumbo. And, you know, in new orleans, they say, are you catholic . Whos your mama . Can you make a roux . In that order. It is a mixture of oil and flour. It has to be done slowly, slowly, slowly. Like curdle. Yes. It will burn. How long will that roux take . This can take up to an hour, yeah. It can take longer, just to get the color you want. You want a caramely, almost Peanut Butter color. So here we have our trinity, the base of a lot of creole cooking. Green peppers, celery and onions. Delicious base for the gumbo. Now after i cook it down and let it soften, we squeeze the garlic in there, like that. Look at that. Isnt that beautiful . And smell it. It smells sweet. A little a little crunch. Then we add chicken stock. And then well come over here. Making vegetable stock, if youre doing a vegan thing or Something Like that . You could, actually. Just add the okra to make it vegan. You can add tomatoes, do your own thing. You can add tofu. We have some pulled chicken, some fresh shrimp, also we throw that we add green sassafras and creole spice, a mixture of cayenne, paprika, all this good stuff. And this is the final product. Thats it. A bowl of rice. Big, beautiful cook it through. Parsley. I dont see a spoon, but were going to use this big one. Ill get you one, hodi. Try this. They lock everything up. It is good.
