And good morning. Welcome to today on a wednesday morning. Nice to have jon stewart coming back after a while. Its been a while. Thats right. Hes been busy. He took a summer off. Now were going to find out what he was doing in his free time. It wasnt all that free. It wasnt. A directing debut. Well get started with our top story. Amazing feat attempted deep in space a sign tipss trying to land a spacecraft on a speeding comet. Good morning. Reporter savannah, good morning. Space is the place to think big. They are doing that here. This comet, 2. 5 miles wide has taken almost a decade to reach and it is tense right now. The lander has detached as we speak, it is in three full on the way to the comet. Will it land safely . Cheers erupting in the control room after flawless separation from the space craft. The first ever attempt to land on the surface after comet. A computer glitch briefly cutting communication threatening the mission. It is now on schedule to touch down on the comet in a few hours time. The purpose, to learn more about the solar system formed over 4 billion years ago, the lander will gather gases, chemicals, and other properties from the comet. The rosetta space craft has been chasing the kplet for ten years millions of miles from earth. The trickiest part, well, how do you get the lander to land with little gravity . Without full knowledge of what the inhospitable surfaces will be like and no control over where the spacecraft makes contact with the ground. If it goes according to plan the landing will look Something Like this. A daring feat revealing more secrets of the solar system, it could even explain the origin of life on earth. And we are hearing that the lander has begun to send back signals but they need to get this right, guys, it cost a billion dollars to build and some of the evidence that it might find might help with the dooms day scenario where a comet is directing toward earth. So much for that old wives tale that its too cold to snow because i can assure you it is really, really cold here and it is snowing. Winter weather advisories are in effect for the heavier snow were going to see. But the bigger story is the frigid cold. Look at the steam coming off this lake behind me here in washington park. I know that the water is not as cold as the 3 degrees it is out here now and that warm air rises and we end up with steam. This is all part of this bigger storm system, this arctic air mass that is responsible for producing about two feet of snow in parts of michigan. We ended up with a foot, foot and a half in montana and wisconsin. It also brought some very gusty winds to Washington State and oregon where downed trees and power lines and tens of thousands of people are without power right now. The biggest thing i noticed was the temperature drop. We went from record high temperatures in wichita, kansas, and down through dalhart texas and got up to 32 the next day. So its cold and here in denver we are looking at temperatures for highs today to be about 50 degrees below average. Well only top out around 5 or 6 later this afternoon. By the time we get to friday well warm up here but al, thats when this cold is headed to your neck of the woods. Sadly, unfortunately, i think dylan is going to be on the road for a while because were not going to see a break in this arctic express. Its going to continue moving in. As you look at these temperatures right now 5 in casper, 19 in north platte, currently cleveland at 40, nashville 50. Thats 11 gles below average. And then tomorrow morning kansas city 19, new orleans 50. Dallas at 29 degrees, thats 18 degrees above average. High temperatures not much bet e from 20 to 50 degrees below average. And then early friday morning it continues. Were going to look at 29 degrees for a low in atlanta, the high in atlanta only 48. Chicago, 33. Thats 16 degrees below average. Plus, coming up in the next half hour were 2ing to talk about the lakeeffect snow machine cranking up a foot of snow or more, heading into the great lakes. A rescue in dallas on tuesday after a city worker had a medical emergency and drove into a creek. Two of the mans colleagues and a few other witnesses rushed in to help and here you can see one of them using a hammer to try to break through the trucks window so they could get in the cab. The men didnt realize they knew the driver until the rescue was well under way. As the truck was filling up with water the men used a rope and pulled the driver to safety. Finding all four modestly successful in the first year, but these benefits are not sustained long term. Among the four diets there was insufficient proof that one plan was better than another. And the impact on Heart Disease and risk factors like high cholesterol is unclear. Refuting claims that spotify is giving music away, he says its paid more than 2 willion to lablts and societies for distributions to stong writers and recording artists. Autopsy documents reveal in addition to battling depression and parkinsons, the actor may have been battling another debilitating disease. National correspondent kate snow is joining us. Sources close to the Williams Family say theyll never know exactly what led Robin Williams to take his own life but the autopsy does reveal new clues like 70 or 80 of parkinsons patients, williams also had a form of dementia. On screen, he was a comic live wire. But new details in Robin Williams autopsy reveal the oscarwinning actor was dealing with several different types of abnormal changes in the brain when he took his own life this summer. The main conclusion in the coroners report, findings in this case support the diagnosis of diffuse lewy body demeademen. Nothing in the report was surprising to them. It all seemed to fit with what they vofbed. Memory problems, Movement Problems like parkinsons features, slowness, stiffness, tremor, balance problems. They can have visual hallucinations. Reporter those hallucinations can be frightening and can cause people to act out. The doctor also says its not uncommon for lewy body dementia to make depression worse. For people who suffer from both depression and did hementia, it can make the symptoms worse. Reporter steven pearl had known williams since 1979 and saw him a month before he died. Something was wrong. You could tell. He lost weight. He looked a bit frail. You could tell something wasnt right and he wasnt all there. Reporter lewy body dementia is the second common most form after alzheimers, affecting 1. 3 million americans. A book about caring for her husband, ralph. He always knew everybody but he didnt always know me and he would look at me and say, where did ann go . She was here a moment ago. Im casey casem. Reporter casey casems family said he was affected by the disease before his death in june and now another highprofile victim. Not many good things can come out of a person passing. One good thing that can come out of it is to raise awareness for a disease that most people dont understand. Sources from the family say they found the autopsy report illuminating and hopes that this news helps to stimulate awareness and if they need help with lewy body dementia no they can get that help. So the interrogator showed him that clip in the prison and said why would an american spy want to talk to you if youre not a spy . And he said, why would an american spy have a Television Show . And then it went south. And then they ended up just yelling at him. How did that go over . Not so good. Not so well. Not so good. I imagine you would have hollywood lining up to work with jon stewart oh until you said its about a detention in an iranian prison. How did that go over . We became friendly after he was out of prison. And when he was around in new york, we would go out and have breakfast together, talk about politics, family. Hes a wonderful guy, the most culturally literal person i met in my life. He asked me if i wanted to help him produce it. Having not done it before i was like yes, of course. Be happy to. Reporter for the women and men who attend, curious and a lifechanging procedure. A lot of them already know about it. I think this encourages them to ask the right questions. How long does the process take . Reporter zwigle, 6, has a new fiance and a demanding job at a startup. We admit put that off five, six, eight. At that point, ill be older and at higher risk. I think its important reporter thats why shes seriously thinking about freezing her eggs and now Certain Companies like facebook and apple will pay for the surgery. But some worry about what kind of intrinsic pressure that puts on women. You work now and live later and i think thats a surreal problem women in the hightech industry and most other industries as well. Reporter freezing eggs does not guarantee a pregnancy and the operation come with his medical risks. This is a real surgery and you should go into it knowing how many eggs a doctor expects from you, what your chances are. Reporter thats why dr. What are the pros and cons of it . Dr. Natalie azar is a clinical professor at langone medical center. Thanks for having me. Egg freezing parties, your gut reaction . It sounds a little worse than it actually is. I want to say one thing at the outset. This is not about women who are anticipating any difficulty with their fertility, right . There are a lot of families who have premature ovarian failure. For them its an amazing technology. This is separate. This is talking about women in their 20s who are being exposed to this technology as a potential viable option to preserve their fertility. Do the reality check. Number one, how successful is it . Does it give people a false assurance that they will, if they freeze their eggs, be able to put off child bearing . That, of course, is probably a philosophical and ethical issue. Its very expensive. Not all insurances will obviously cover it. There are some risks involved. The issue is this. If you preserve, if you freeze an egg in your 20s, that egg is actually healthier than a 35yearold one. Its a younger egg. Right. But here is the issue. The technology is still rather young. We dont know how long those frozen eggs are actually going to be good for. If you do this when youre 22 or 23 and decide when youre 35 you want to thaw the egg out, i dont think we have Amazing Research that suggests that those eggs are actually going to survive for that long. Very quickly, its not an easy process, go in, grab some eggs and youre gone to lunch. Absolutely not. Its a process. They have to be retrieved. As i said its cost intensive and requires some effort on your part as well. Good discussion. Dr. Natalie azar, thank you very much. Savannah, thank you very much. How would you act . What would you do if you knew you were about to lose one of your legs . If you were a young woman injured in the Boston Marathon bombing, facing an amputation a year and a half later, you would have a little fun. Janet shamlian has that story. Reporter it helps to have a sense of humor. In the hours before she had her leg amputated, rebecca dimartino broke up with her leg. In marker she wrote on her leg. Its not you. Its me. Youve had a little bit of fun with this. Ive had a lot of fun with it. Everybody looks at it as a sad thing but its really not. Its my new beginning. Reporter after an unsuccessful 18month fight to save her leg following the Boston Marathon bombing, joking is all she could do. There had already been too much sadness. I feel better than i have in 18 months. Reporter you were thrilled about having this amputation . Yes. I am thrilled because i am moving on with my life. I am taking away the old and bringing in the new and i just cant wait to see what it brings me. Reporter rebecca was at the finish line of the marathon when the unthinkable happened. Her 7yearold son and then boyfriend, now husband, pete, were with her. All were hurt but rebecca suffered the worst injuries. It hurt to walk. It hurt to get out of the house for an hour to go to the store. I was completely exhausted. Reporter her recovery has been nothing short of herculean. 17 surgeries. You may kiss your bride. Reporter a brief break from therapy when she married pete in april. But pain was persistent and her leg wouldnt heal. She told doctors it was time to take her leg. How hard was it to make that decision . Honestly, it wasnt hard. I have said all along that my leg is just my leg and my life is so much more. And so i knew from the beginning that if this is what it came to, i would be okay with it. Reporter she wont be able to walk for a while but rebecca says she will eventually run. Could you ever see running in boston . Absolutely. Its one of my biggest goals. I will run the Boston Marathon. Definitely. Reporter a testament to the human spirit. The natural dip in your alertness will occur two hours before your wakeup time and another 12 hours later. So for you at 8 00 p. M. You want to save your break sessions, save them up so you can get a 20minute nap around midnight or 1 00 a. M. , then you want to take coffee just before you nap. 15 minutes before you nap. Yes. You get coffee boost after 20 minute nap, and youll have the alertness from the nap. Al doesnt drink coffee. Thats great. The coffee is really going to help. Make him drink coffee. Really. Up without caffeine this whole time . If you are sensitive to coffee or you have not been drinking coffee, then you want to start low and green tea would be wonderful. Actually, the four to five first hours because i had so much problem to sleep the night before because i was so stressed. You had trouble sleeping before you started. Gosh. I was so action haased before i started. After four or five hours i was kind of doing a wave, so it was great. I loved every minute of it. And what kind reef action did you get back home when this happened . People loved it. People, they were following me the whole night through and they had lots of questions and they wanted to know how can you be updated all the time.
