Convicted murderer and former new England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez is dead. According to the Massachusetts Department of corrections, hernandez was discovered in his cell just after midnight hour our time. Investigators say he hanged himself using a bed sheet. Staff at the jail did try to save his life there. He was then taken to a boston area hospital where he was pronounced dead about an hour later. You talk about the hospital. Here are the aerials over the hospital this morning. Investigators say that hernandez actually tried to block them from getting inside of his jail cell by jamming it shut with items from inside the cell. Obviously, he was unsuccessful. Just last week, hernandez was found not guilty of murder in the shooting deaths of two men back in 2012. But hernandez was already serving a life sentence in jail for a 2013 murder. Coincidentally, the patriots are headed to the white house today to celebrate their super bowl victory. And we learned within the past hour, the patriots are not expected to comment on hernandezs death today. All right, now were following a developing story out of the south bay this morning and it is new overnight. Safety concerns on the San Jose State University campus after a man trying to attack a woman while she was out jogging. It was an aggressive attempt as well. Bob redell is live on campus to explain how the woman was able to get away. What a lucky break for her, bob. Good morning to you, kris and sam. This is what makes the attack so frightening, that the suspect, this man seems very determined to try to catch this woman. But fortunately, as you mentioned, she got away. This happened around 7 45 at the intersection behind me. East san fernando and south seventh street, when this man lunged at the woman who was jogging and tried to grab her. According to the campus alert on your screen nat was sent out to students, the woman was able to run away. Her attacker did not relent. He ran after her, chased her to park lot four, which as you can see in the map we put together for you, is just a few blocks away from here. Thats where she was able to get into a students vehicle. The student happened to be passing by. She was able to get in that vehicle and escape her attacker. That suspect took off, last seen at the intersection of south 10th and east san fernando. According to the campus alert, Campus Police looking for an africanamerican man in his 40s. They said he has a thin build, around 63. At the time, he was wearing a gray cap, brown camouflage puffy jacket, dark blue jeans and a mole on the left side of his face. Reporting out here, bob redell, today in the bay. Bob, thank you very much. After a close vote and a of calls for change, new rules will take effect for landlords and renters in san jose. Last night, renters fought for their rights during a city council meeting. Take a listen. It was a deeply divided crowd as the Council Voted on just cause evictions, and late last night, we learned it pass 65. That means the landlords must now a reason why a renter is being evicted and reason has to match one of 12 different criteria, including not paying rent or newance violations. Renters consider this a win. These landlords will survive. Tenants need more protections in san jose. I think that that would do much better to serve this Community Without more ordinances. Well, critics say new regulations mean fewer units in san jose. They also say landlords are going to start screening renters more thoroughly. 6 04. Happening today, one east bay city is trying to help people facing rising rent. The concord planning and Housing Division is holding a workshop to talk about a proposed residential rent review program. That will be presented to the city council on may 2nd. It would allow tenants to receive rent increases of more than 10 in a oneyear period to request Mediation Services through the city. Today workshop starts at 1 30, its at the city council chambers. Trying to get you where you need to go and faster. New changes to report right now for bus riders in palo alto. The vta is putting more buses on routes with more riders and fewers on routes with fewer riders. The vtas new plan would get rid of route 88 and replace it with three new routes to help people traveling to gunn school and the v. A. Medical center. Theres going to be more buses on route 522 as well. The vta is scheduled to vote on the changes on may 4th. New this morning, out of half moon bay, a state parks building is set to be demolished after years on the cliffside, facing pounding weather conditions. We have been reporting on this since the winter. The demolition will close part of the California Coastal trail there. The demolition is set to take place here in the next couple days. As we take a pretty clear look right now outside at the bay bridge. Bakersfield and l. A. , they top the list of the unhealthiest places to breathe in the united states. The bay area also ranked in the top ten for particle pollution. All of this is according to the American LungAssociations Annual state of the air report that was just released this morning. Cities in california, utah, and nevada saw spikes in pollution, largely because of wildfires, factories, and cars. The American LungAssociation Says those pollutants can cause severe asthma attacks and other health complications. Particle pollution especially is risky for cardiovascular harm, like heart disease, stroke. It also is greatly risky for people with diabetes and it causes lung cancer. For the cleaner places to live, a lot of those cities with the cleanest air were on the east coast. Developing this morning, police in healdsburg are looking for a man accused of stabbing another man right in front of a Community Center. Police are looking for him, 22yearold luis enrico gonzalez. They said he stabbed 23yearold man in front of the Healdsburg Community center yesterday afternoon. That Community Center hosts an Afterschool Program for kids. But fortunately, there were no children there at the time. The victim is expected to make a full recovery. Well, today marks 22 years exactly since the tragic Oklahoma City bombing where 168 people were killed in that explosion in 1995 that included 19 children. That was the deadliest terror attack on u. S. Soil until, of course, the september 11th attack. Timothy mcveigh was executed for carrying out the bombing. Terry nichols is still serving a livance for conspiracy. Godwins sister said she wanted stephens to be taken alive so he could stand trial. If youre just waking up, we have learned convicter murderer and former new England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez is dead. Today in the bays pete surratt is live outside that retirement home to find out why the people who live there have not been evacuated yet. This must be unnerving, pete. Good morning to you, kris and sam. There are still hundreds of residents next to me at this retirement home as the Management Team deals with the landslide issues behind me. A resident told me there are no evacuations at this time. You can see this area is fenced off. We cant give you a good Vantage Point of how much damage were talking about, but you can see the hole is starting to grow. Starting to grow deeper. Creating a massive hole dmex to the bay park retirement home in pinole. Now, management says it was more than likely caused by the recent heavy rain, and they brought in engineers to take a look at this and they determined that the building is safe for the most part but have closed off areas near the landslide such as the activity and dining rooms. We did speak to a resident who says shes okay but is worried for her neighbors. There are people with hearing and vision disabilities and mental disabilities and they get frightened very easily, so yes, there are people that are concerned. So at this hour, there are no evacuations for residents in this building. The management says they will continue to work on this issue, but if safety does become an issue, they added they will evacuate the residents immediately. Pete suratos for today in the bay. Now to a developing story out of the Central Valley in just a few hours, were expected to learn the names of the three victims randomly killed in the streets of downtown fresno. We have learned of one this morning. The pg e employee who was killed, zachary randall, 34 years old. Investigators say the killings appeared to be racially motivated. Theyre now calling it a hate crime. Heres what we know at this hour. The suspect, Corey Ali Muhammad is accused of shooting at a utility truck yesterday morning, killing a passenger. Police say that he then shot two other victims near a charity parking lot. Authorities also say that muhammad yelled out god is great in arabic before being taken into custody. He also reportedly posted antiwhite social media messages. All of yesterdays victims were white. Last night, as you see there, through song, members of the Fresno Community coming together to memorialize the victims and pray for their city. One of the organizes had this to say. He made a decision to himself that he was not going to go to jail for shooting a Security Guard, that he was going to kill as many people as he could today, and thats what he set out to do. In the meantime, there is another clue in this case. Muhammad, we have learned, was also wanted in the killing of a motel 6 Security Guard last week. Hes now facing four murder charges. 6 35 right now. New this morning, police in concord are looking for this woman who they say was involved in a series of robberies not only in the bay area but also Northern California and nevada. One of the events happened in concord. 23yearold sierra mathis stole items from a walgreens store and pushed an employee who tried to stop her. Another woman was arrested after she was arrested from surveillance pictures like this one. 6 35 right now. Some major changes to Public Transit in San Francisco. According to the examiner, munis oldest trolley buses will be replaced by 2019. Transit agency is going to bring in 185 buses starting at the end of this year. Muni Officials Say the older buses are actually responsible for about 40 of all the mechanical issues that cause riders service delays. And staying in San Francisco, safety first this morning. The San FranciscoFire Department holding a Community Safety fair. The activities are aimed at teaching people how to better prepare for disaster. This is fire station 38 on california street. The bridge connects moraga with the canyon and Redwood Canyon area in general. It was closed after engineered determines had suffered too much structural damage from a recent landslide. New this morning, a live look right now from the San Jose State University campus, where police are looking for a man who tried to attack a jogger. That attempted assault was reported just before 8 00 last night. The woman was jogging near seventh street and east san fernando street when she said a man lunged at her and tried to grab her. She ran away, but the man then chased her. The only way she was able to get away was to jump into the car of a stranger. Officers searched the area but could not find that man. This is at the vta transit station at the East Ridge Mall for the cesar chavez pilgrimage. Right now, an estimated 100 people are preparing to head out from san jose to the leaders grave in la paz. What were learning about the unexpected death of former nfl player turned convicted murderer Aaron Hernandez. First, happening now, 44 people died after a bus went down a gorge in india. Officials say that bus went off the road and straight down into a river. There were only two known survivors. Plus, it could be more difficult now to Discipline Police officers accused of lying in Southern California. A Southern California lawmaker wants to raise the standard of proof in cases where officers are accused of lying. Convicted murders and former new England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez is dead. He was discovered in his jail cell. Investigators say he hanged himself using a bed sheet. He was taken to a boston area hospital where he was later pronounced dead about an hour after that. Investigators say tried to block his door from the inside by jamming it shut with items from his cell. Just last week, hernandez was found not guilty of murder in the shooting deaths of two men back in 2012. But hernandez, of course, was already serving a life sentence for murder that dates back to 2013. A live look from pinole where hundreds of people are still living in the bay park retirement home despite a landslide that is threatening the building there. Management says the landslide was probably caused by the heavy rain that we had recently. They did close some sections of the building that are close to the landslide as a precaution, but they havent announced any plans to evacuate those senior residents.
