Out. Flames take over a home. Neighbors rush to help but a 5yearold boy doesnt make it out. Betty yu is live with the investigation and frantic moments. Neighbors on this street are just devastated that their efforts to save this child were not enough. It was simply too late. Tonight Vallejo Police are here on the scene and crime tape now surrounds this house as investigators search for a cause. Reporter you could see heavy smoke billowing out of the back bedroom road and from the front of the house you could see flames. Trapped inside was a 5yearold boy. On the outside, his mother desperate for help. The house is engulfed in flames. Shes yelling for the neighbors and everybody to just get her son out, please just get my son out, hes in there. Reporter velma jones was next door and dropped everything to help. Another neighbor shot this cell phone video of people trying to battle the flames even as firefighters arrived. The Fire Department was met by many neighbors trying to assist in getting the one victim out who was found in a back bedroom. Reporter by the time firefighters found the boy, he was dead. She was frantic. She was burned really, really bad. Her face was just black. Reporter fire Officials Say the boys mom went to the hospital with second and third degree burns and her teenaged son has minor burns. Its really traumatizing. Its very sad. Very sad. And he was getting ready to start school. He said im going to be in kindergarten, ms. V. Reporter ms. V says she called the boy little man. He was a very smart, respectful little boy. He would always say how is your son doing . And how are you doing today, ms. V . Thats what he would say to me every day. The neighbors say this boy just turned 5 years old and as recently as last week she bought him a birthday present. Tonight we understand the mother is still in very bad shape at the hospital. Firefighters say the house behind me is a total loss. Live in vallejo, betty yu, kpix 5. Right now more than 100 firefighters are trying to contain a wildfire in monterey county. Its burned 3500 acres about 25 miles south of salinas and its sending up thick smoke. The fire started about 3 30 this afternoon. No injuries have been reported and no homes threatened. Firefighters are worried about transmission lines. They say if those go down, it could mean a major power outage. People are posting photos of the fire on social media. This picture of the dark clouds and smoke. Ruby boyd posted this picture of the wind blowing the fire eastward. Right now the fire is about 20 contained. A Santa Clara County jail guard has injuries to his face and head after an altercation with an inmate. The Sheriffs Office says they were later released with minor injuries. Now San Franciscos acting police chief wants people to know hes ready to make changes. Joe vazquez is live with the chiefs latest message to Community Leaders. The new chief says its time to start tearing down the walls between the Police Department and the community. He told Community Leaders in the western edition that he was going to be the first one to begin moving bricks. Reporter three days after he was appointed San Franciscos new acting police chief, tony chaplain went to church. Third Baptist Church for a meeting of the naacp. Those in charge and those on the floor need to do more to respect all lives. Reporter he faced questions from the community and promised hed work hard for reform. Theres a lot of officers out there wanting to do the good work. Were talking about the small minority out there doing things they have no business doing. Thats what were going to isolate and identify. Those are the ones were going to send with commission with recommendation they be separated from the Police Department. Reporter mayor ed lee appointed him thursday to the post of acting chief after another officer involved shooting. The fire broke out around 3 00 this morning at dicks bakery. It started somewhere in the back of the building. Crews kept the flames from spreading to nearby businesses but smoke and water damage will likely put the bakery out of commission for days if not weeks. The owner is vowing to rebuild. Its been a blessing. I love this place. Our employees are like family. Our family works here also. All of our children have worked in the bakery. The bakery is known for its burnt almond cake. And dicks bakery has been at the same location since the Shopping Center first opened in 1957. To the race for the white house now. The hikers say the coyote crept up on them and their dogs. Police were called in to scare the animal away. No one was hurt. Cambrian bowl will close at midnight. Hundreds of people came together for a pride celebration in concord today. About 300 people were at the plaza. They enjoyed live music, dancing, a food truck and beer garden. Local businesses and agencies operated booths. People say one reason for this event is theres nothing like it in the Castro District of the suburbs. We live far apart. Its really difficult to get to know each other. The Center Provides support for lgbt people from across contra costa county. Scientists are seeing more whales off the coast from years passed. Crews teamed up for an expedition. For nine days they roamed the waters without disturbing wildlife. Whales are here and theyre feeding. Thats a good sign that the ocean is really productive. Were monitoring these things to determine what we may be seeing as a result of Climate Change and what may be a result of natural variability in the ocean. Its not clear why there are more whales this year. The results of another expedition coming up in july might paint a clearer picture. Not many people say they can go in to work with the specific surface of saving the world. Reporter to save mankind from a doomsday collision, brooks is working with these relatively small meteorites. Rock that formed at the dawn of our solar system drifted through space for billions of year then fell to earth. Came a long way to get here and were pretty lucky to get to use them. Reporter using them means destroying them. Because the team is considering two possible ways of deflecting a killer asteroid. To either use a kinetic factor. Reporter basically thats a space craft that would ram the asteroid and push it off course. Option 2 is a bit messier. Standoff nuclear explosion. Reporter yes, a Nuclear Device detonated at just the right distance. Just the uppermost layers of the surface are heated to High Temperatures and blow off in a vapor and the rest of the asteroid recoils in the other direction. Reporter you dont go setting off Nuclear Devices near asteroids without knowing theyll respond. Thats where this stuff comes in. These lasers are powerful enough to create a High Temperature plasma and annihilate the rock. Results from this will feed directly in to the giant clusters of computers here at livermore to inform how an asteroid would actually respond to either a Standoff Nuclear explosion or kinetic factor. We do have more elegant options. The gravity traction, which uses a piece of it to pull it in to proper orbit. Those take several years of planning then execution. If time is short, Going Nuclear might be our best option in what would be a pretty grim situation. We want to be prepared in the event theres an emergency.
