Joe vasquez has the latest. Reporter ken, neighbors heard the noise this morning. They thought it was new year fire works but it was gunfire directed at officers. Late this evening, Palo Alto Police found this rifle in a backyard. They are checking it out to see if it was the one used to fire at officers early this morning. The bullets started flying around 2 15 a. M. Hitting about a half dozen cars and one of them went right through cassandra julians house. Through the curtain all the way to here. My son who is hiding from the camera. He ducked down when it happened. In this wall is where it ended up. Reporter two officers were already on the scene investigating a call for shots fired when suddenly it was a new barrage of gunshots. They could hear and feel the bullets whizzing by their faces. One officer took cover behind a car. He was pinned down. We didnt know where the gunfire was coming from. We extracted him safely with our patrol vehicles and a team of officers. Reporter judging from where they found the bullet casings, investigators say it is possible the gunman was shooting at the officer while standing right in the middle of the street. It is very normal here. We are not surprised. We are lucky nobody got hurt and we move on. In is crazy. People are shooting just to shoot. Come on. It is meaningness. Dont shoot at the cops or each other. There has to be a better way to handle stuff. This is ridiculous. Police detained eight men for questioning but so far, no arrests. Police were responding to reports of gunfire near Orange Memorial Park around 3 00 this morning when they themselves came under fire. They shot back. Nobody was hit. Hours later, officers arrested ivan gomez. He has been charged with the attempted murder of two Police Officers. About 5 30 tonight. People if downtown oakland called 911 to say a man was pointing a gun at cars on broadway. The man went into the 12th street bart station. Police caught up with him and shot bean bag projectiles at him and took him in. Turns out he was carrying a bibi gun. And some bay area drivers have been taking a shortcut and putting everyone else at risk 06 going over a cliff. Recent storms washed out a portion of highway 1 in marin. On the surface the road looks safe, but underneath, a big chunk of the ground has rolled away so if you go down, you will go down the cliff. It is not worth it if you ask damian hall. When they move the barricades, they often dont put them back so unsuspecting motorists like this woman drive through thinking they are safe. It was only on one side of the road. The Utility Company is increasing household rates by 6 . That starts today. It is the biggest rate hike since 2006. The money will pay for various upgrades and hiring more people to work in the call centers. Well here is a useful tip. Livermore police are out with an unusual warning. If you have an automatic garage door grab a zip tie. Burglars find ways to disengage the emergency release latch on the door and open it without power. It would be better if we were at 100 . If you compare this to last january, we are doing much better. In fact, about three times better than we were last year at this time. But we still need some numbers to get us up to average, so the Climate Predict center gave us three months ahead to tell us what they think and the forecast is for above average rainfall chances in Northern California over the bay area between january and march. Two doses of good news. We are at least ahead of where we were last year and it looks as if we will eventually get wet. We have to be patient though. We are getting another cold night tonight.
