Good morning, its june 8. On monday Hillary Clinton secured enough delegates to claim her partys nomination and is now celebrating victories including one in california. There campaign is about making sure there are no ceilings on any of us and this is our moment. Some supporters say they hope she will continue to break down barriers. Many women have made a run for the white house as far back as 1872 but clinton is the first to lead a major party. Heres the numbers in california. Clinton winning 56 . Bernie sanders taking 43 . Republican presumptive nominee had a clean sweep yesterday. In california he won 75 of the vote. He had harsh words for clinton yesterday. Hillary clinton turned the state department into her private hedge fund, the russians, the saudis, the chinese, all gave money to bill and hillary and got favorable treatment in return. Its a sad day in america when foreign governments with deep pockets have more influence in our own country than our great citizens. I didnt need to do this. Its not easy, believe me. I didnt need to do it. But i felt i had to give back to our wonderful country which has been so good to me and to my family. [ applause and cheers ] trump says he plans to make a speech next week about the clintons. This morning were learning a lot more about where the president ial race stands now. Kpix 5 political analyst melissa caen joins us now to break it down. Good morning. Good morning. So Hillary Clinton seems to have won pretty big last night but you say that may change . Thats right. The vast majority of california voters vote by absentee ballot or what we call vote by mail ballot. Those just had to be postmarked by election day. That means for the next three to five days, were still going to get a lot of these ballots in the door. They are not included so far in the total. Well, we have seen previously in other primaries that have done vote by mail Bernie Sanders supporters tend to vote a little later. And so their votes trickle in at the end and so while Hillary Clinton seems to have won big and Bernie Sanders is not likely to overtake her, well see a narrowing of clintons lead as the absentee ballots that were mailed come in. A clinton victory in california no doubt but not as big as the one we are seeing today. So speaking of Bernie Sanders, we saw him speaking last night we heard him speaking last night. He is not dropping out. So whats his path to a possible victory later this year . Well, in a tremendous understatement in his speech last night he said, my path is narrow. [ laughter ] and he said we have a steep climb to victory. Thats an incredible understatement. His only path right now is to convince hundreds and hundreds of superdelegates to change their pledged votes basically go against the popular vote and the person who won the most pledged delegates and instead vote for Bernie Sanders. So a very steep climb according to the man himself. He sort of recognizes that. Sure. Its also a big night for Kamala Harris. What can we expect in november . The big question in the harrissanchez race was how is chez spencer going to do in Southern California her home turf and among latinos. Loretta sanchez. Harris won had votes in sanchez strongholds. Harris will have to get potential republicans to vote for her in order to make up for the shortfall when we head into november. It will get more heated. Sanchez has to be disappointed with how things went last night for her with her base voters voting for Kamala Harris. She has the Democratic Party endorsement. She has a lot going for her at this point. Thank you, kpix 5 political analyst melissa caen. The postelection talk includes other interesting races and issues local and state jackie ward has more on the state Senate District 11 race in San Francisco. Weiner had a big financial edge and kim had the support of Bernie Sanders during the campaign season. Weiner hilled a postelection event last night at the blackbird bar in San Francisco. Well celebrate and move on to november. Its going to be a dogfight. It will be a competitive race. We are going to work really hard. Reporter kim thanked her supporters last night at a party for a group called the San Francisco reformed democrats. We are within cutting edge of this race here on june 7 and i could not have done it if not for the people power in this room. So thank you. as the top two finishers kim and weiner will run off in november. California voters approved proposition 50 yesterday the only statewide measure by result of 3 1. They should waiting for ballots to come out of the machine, and count them. They have their work cut out for them. They have a quarter million ballots that are vote by mail to get them done quickly. With all the precincts reporting now they have about 65 of the ballot counted. This gives us some idea a good idea of the hotly contested races. They are both tied at 38 . We caught up with ro khanna yesterday who has momentum on his side. Two years ago he lost but now he is back with a big name endorsement like san jose mayor sam liccardo. Khanna says honda is bogged down by an ethics investigation and honda promised not to take money from lobbyists, pacs or corporations. Anyone looking at these results, they are exceeded so far my expectations by far and i think it shows that people want change. They want new energy. Its not, you know its a sense that we need to move forward. I think well be fine. When people come out to vote, our base will be very supportive. I think in spite of the brochures that went out and the amount of money into my opponent is spending, i think that we should be good. Reporter as for congressman honda, it was business as usual yesterday since he did not hold a special celebration. He said he needed to get back to work in washington, dc for several votes and said he was not hiding on election night. The khanna campaign changed its strategy this time around saying they are spending less in the days leading up to the primary saving the 2 million for november. Live in san jose, kiet do, kpix 5.
