I am sure that is how a lot of drivers who take highway 17 are feeling as well. Man, i have been here a few times this winter and i havent had to drive it every day like commuters do, but they have to deal with so much. I think we have video of landslides and myslides that have happened so far mudslides that have happened so far this winter. The only one causing issues is the slide by the vine hill road exit. Traffic is limited to one lane there. Other than that, things are looking okay so far. After the winter that we have had, the ground is so super saturated. So, that means the land and mud keep tumbling down into the freeway and causing a lot of trouble. So, they have had landslide experts here and geologists here. They put markers in the ground and then they track to see how far the markers have moved to make sure that everything stays safe here. I spoke to chp about all of this and they said yeah, of course, theyre tired of the winter because we dont need water here. At the same time, this is what it is. Reporter so, i live in San Francisco and so, its usually without of course, at this hour in the day and tabs me over an hour to get to the spot where i am, close to know an hour and 20 minutes to get here. And its definitely as traffic picks up this morning and so just give yourself extra time as you leave the house. Its probably not going to be a great commute. And a lot of ponding on the road. Whoop officer told me they were supposed to reopen the pier at 4 00 but its too dangerous for people to walk on to the pier. The rain is coming down sideways. Pacifica is one of those communities who has been hit hard this winter. They have had a large sinkhole open up, a mudslide and big waves that cared through a restaurant and damaging part of the restaurant. All of that is top of the cliff erosion, which forced the city to demolish an apartment building. What youre seeing here now, the rain and waves, the waves pounding at the shoreline, the erosion. That is the action. The reaction, how will the infrastructure hold up . Things like mud slides and downed trees and sinkholes. In the south bay, the new round of rain has crews concerned over the water levels at the Anderson Reservoir. The first time in more than 10 years, the waters cascading over the spillway in morgan hill. Santa clara countys Water District is trying to release water from the anderson dam as quickly as possible to bring the levels back down to normal. Another concern, engineering studies reveal the dam may not be Strong Enough to withstand a major earthquake or of a 7. 2 or greater earthquake. And if it failed, the flooding downstream would be catastrophic. And crews are keeping a close eye on the oroville dam. The next storm could cause more problems on the damaged spillway. There is millions of dollars worth of damage from the most recent round of storms and even though it needs repairs, state water officials have to use it to help repair. They slightly increase the amount of water pouring down it yesterday. Meanwhile, the lake level dropped 50 feet compared to a week ago. The officials are confident that the lake can handle more rain. Work on emergency repairs across the area. The conditions are so bad, roads are crumbling and full of potholes and others shut down. A stretch of highway 37 in novato is drenched that the road is singeing there. The crews are sinking there. The crews are thinking had for a possibility of more damage and mud slides. And we put in place some k rails and traffic controls. Were looking a at that area and working with the residents in the area. We have been trying to contact them to get a dialogue going. And depending on the rain the storm system brings, its possible crews will have to stop repair work altogether. Residents in san anselmo are gearing up for flooding. The last line of defense against a frequent flooding of the creek. The Ross Valley Fire Department has warned people to move their cars to higher ground. In tracy, Officials Say the San Joaquin River could breakthrough levees. Theyre there to see if the water gets to close to the home. Most are staying put for now. A fire chief said that everyone should be ready to evacuate if necessary. For the portola valley, light rain. And los altos, san mateo across the span of the san mateo bridge and in San Francisco now. Westbound 580. A fivecar crash blocking all lanes and now its blocking the two right lanes and left lanes are open. Youre moving pretty much at 60 miles an hour. Dont worry about it too much. Make sure youre looking for chp. This is a live look the of the rain coming down. And should take but 15 to 20 minutes and expect high winds, two hands on the wheel and drive slow. Y. This is in the peninsula and redwood city. This is a crash and flooding in the area. Causing delays at 26 Miles Per Hour. Give yourself plenty of time. Youre diverted off of the roadway and to get you on to the freeway there. Moving along the altamont pass, 50 miles an hour along the way and looking good if youre heading that way. Okay. And our storm watch continues in the south bay. The Santa Cruz Mountains are getting slammed from the storm now. Jackie ward is live at the santa cruz sum it it show us how conditions are now, jackie. Reporter were sort of on standby right now. There are no major mudslides or landslides to report. The only thing that may snarl up traffic that has been causing delays for a week now is that vine hill road exit mud slide. And we have seen chp crews out there removing trees and taking care of debris as much as they can. One lane is open in that area. Fortunately, its a holiday today, though, and as we can see behind me, there are a few cars and not terrible amounts for rush hour. This area from highway 17, trying to get to cupertino and other places on the peninsula, this has been a pain in the neck for commuters. I spoke to commuters all winter long and its one of those things where its very hit or miss. They have to check chp updates to make sure that they can drive home. Last time i was here, i was actually able to stand in the middle of the highway during the evening rush hour. Guess i can check that off the bucket list. That is a taste of what the commuters are doing. Ing to to report so far. The ground is saturated, as i drove down this morning, there were little mud slides or rock piles and lots of runoff, too. Jackie ward, kpix 5. And rising water levels are a major concern at the Anderson Reservoir. Kpix 5 reporter annemakevec has more. Reporter the Anderson Reservoir is overflowing the banks and pay lot of that water is coming into the coyote creek. You can see its up to the tippy tops of the banks right now. Is a Flood Warning for the creek and we can see more of then later on today. The first time in more than a decade, the water has been cascading over the spillway here in morgan hill. The Water District of Santa Clara County is trying to release water as quickly as possible, trying to bring the water levels down to normal. The goal is to have the reservoir 68 full because there is concern about how stable the reservoir would be in an earthquake. Engineers have been basically warning that it may not be Strong Enough to withstand a big quake. Theyre saying 7. 2 could destroy the reservoir. If it fails, the flooding downtown san jose would be catastrophic. That is how far coyote creek goes. Anywhere would be a concern. Luck willly the engineers say the risk of that is low. As far as the minor low level flooding, that is something were going to watch out for all day. What is it going to take to get the reservoir seismically retrofitted . 400 million. You know how slowly the projects can go. We may not have a lot of time. You never know come the next earthquake is coming. The broadcasted ject would take four year the project would take four years and looks like it wont start until 2020. And this new round of rain could cause major flooding in the central valley. The National Weather service sent a warning to residents of 18 counties in the area. Much of the soil by the river is already saturated and there is growing concern this round of rain and wind could cause the receiver to crest or compromise a levee system and that is why locals are taking the warnings seriously. And get sandbags and pay tractor. Get to high ground and do what they sea. My concern is being land locked. His neighbor got a scare from recent storms when this redwood fell on to the driveway. Meanwhile, a Water Rescue Team from the menlo park Fire Protection district is heading to sacramento to help in case of flooding. The same team went to oroville last week to offer support if the spillway failed. And there is a lot of snow in the sierra if youre heading to the mountains. Be careful of the slick roads there. I80 packed with the snow and rain controls are in affect from kingville to donner lake. You can see the drivers from the area taking it easy from the mountains. This is blinding rain and wind driven as well. The light moderate precipitation and lifting out of the lafayette area. We have rain shower backing through livermore and stanley boulevard. The altamont pass. San jose, moderate rainfall into milpitas around the 680 and as you make tracks out of the freemont area. Blasted all morninglo long. San mateo bridge as well. San francisco, fulton streak and balboa street, definitely slippery when wet. This being fueled and into the northeasterly direction, the direct rain is the Central Coast into Santa Cruz Mountains. Were up to six inches of rain antis patted. The Anderson Creek reservoir is overspilling the banks. Meanwhile, the other side of the story happens to be the wins.
