Today marks a big day for investors as the 8th anniversary of the bull market. Cbs News Business analyst Jill Schlesinger is here to break down the markets progress since then plus offers on investing. Lets start where we were 8 years ago. Reporter oh, it was a dark time, my friend. March 9, 2009, the Dow Jones Industrial average closed at 6547. That was the lowest level in more than a decade. S p 500, 676. And nasdaq, down to 1268. Now, look at this. The current stock market expansion, it is really going strong it is the second longest on record. That said, we do have a long way to go to make it into first place. To eclipse the bull that ran from december 1987 to march of 2000, this one would need to make it past june 28th of 2021 without experiencing a 20 decline. So im safe where we are. I dont need to be the longest. I think were pretty good where we are. Absolutely. So jill what should people do who have been out of the market or just starting to invest in the stock market . Reporter i feel bad for the folks who are out of the market. I know this it was spooky eight years ago. And maybe you got spooked sometime between then and now. And youre out. And you may be feeling like, wait, i just want to pull back. Then ill get back in. But unfortunately, thats just a form of market timing. It doesnt work. John vogel the founder of mutual fund giant vanguard has said that after 50 years in the business, he doesnt know anyone who has been able to time the market successfully. And maybe more importantly, consistently. If youre worried about losing a lot of money by hopping in right now, you may want to use dollar cost averaging. Its an Investment Strategy where you divide the available money into equal parts and periodically maybe monthly you just put it to work in diversified portfolio. If you are just starting out, maybe youre making your first ira contribution ever, just remember, youre investing for decades in the future even if the market plunged right after you put the money in, you have a long time to make up the loss and to grow your nest egg. So stick with your game plan. Dont get deterred. Timing the market one of the difficult things to do. Jill schlesinger this morning from new york city, jill, thank you so much. Sure, thank you.
