New at 5 00 a water main broke in San Francisco sending thousands of gallons of water gushing down a street. Cate caugiran is in cal hollow now with the story of this instant river. Reporter it was a little river down green street over here and as you can see behind me theres still a lot of work to be done. So i know that crews right now are working to replace that bad part of the pipe and earlier today, i mean, though i wouldnt recommend it, at one point the water flow was so strong, you probably could have taken a raft and slid down the hill. We came out to empty the recyclables and what not and i saw this big stream. Reporter just after families unwrapped Christmas Gifts green street turned into green stream. All this water here, yeah, was stunned for a minute but, um, you know, i just looked up the street and saw fire engines and cones all over. Reporter the water main break happened around noon. The break sent water down the street and utility crews worked for hours to try and cut it off. The problem is theres eight water gates that they have to shut off to shut the water down. Reporter at least one garage flooded and at this point its unclear what caused the break. Cold weather, old pipes, it could be a bunch of stuff. We are not sure. Too bad because we just got all this rain and the rain seems to be washing away again now. Reporter now, we want to point out this car right here with the utility workers have told us they do need the owner of this car to move so they can speed up the repair work. But we do know that all of that should be done by today. But again, its still taken several hours to get to just this point. Reporting live in San Francisco, cate caugiran, kpix 5.
