Two suspects refused to let them in and then started a fire. Officers forced open the door. One suspect was arrested but another suspect refused to comply. They tried to tase the man but it had no effect. It was till he began to threaten the officers with the ax and began to advance on the officers that the officer was given no other choice than to discharge his firearm in defense of his life and other lives in the immediate area. The 35yearold suspect who suffered from Mental Illness died at the hospital. This is the 6th officer involved shooting shooting in san jose and all have involved Mental Illness. No sign of a man who jumped into the water near the antioch bridge. The coast guard says at 5 00 p. M. Yesterday the 53yearold man jumped off his boat near the pier after his a hashtag fell into the water. Others on the boat tried to get him out but they lost sight of him. Crews will be back out on the water tomorrow. A wooden car port went up in flames today on the north side of town. The fire damaged the adjacent house. Firefighters did get it under control within 20 minutes and kept it from spreading to neighboring homes. Nobody was hurt and the cause of the fire is under investigation. Reporter from the 1860s to the 1960s miners dug in to Iron Mountain pulling out iron, silver, gold, copper, zinc but tearing open the mountain meant unleashing a toxic nightmare. The mining, operations caused it to be swiss cheese with tunnels. Ojand water oxygen and water can come in to contact. Reporter inside what is battery acid leeches from the walls, turning the mountain into acidic drainage. Coming out of the mine and running in to surface water bodies. Reporter the water running out of the mountain most be the most acidic water ever measured on earth. Cant be recorded by a meter. Reporter another way to think of it, the mountain is bleeding metal. Take this rock with two shades of coloring. The right side is the rock in its original state. On the left you can see the oxidation. Rusting out. If you handle two similar sized pieces the oxidized rock is lighter as it is losing metal. For over a century all that leeching metal went into the sacramento river. Six tons of metal every single day causing massive fish kills and threatening the local drinking water. Half of the money that is spent every year here to treat and operate what you saw today is spent on lime. Reporter the Iron Mountain project manager manager for the epa that started over seeing Iron Mountain in 1983. What we created is a reliable treatment system. Reporter the scale of the job is on the scale of the mountains. Starting that top where an Open Pit Mine created this field of exposed ore. For or. All the fresh water streams must be diverted around the mine to protect the clean water. But the larger gap is gathering all the contaminated water. The water that is pumped out of the tunnels, it all has to be contained and safely pumped to the bottom of the mountain. We bring it down to the Treatment Plant where it is treated with lime to raise the ph. Reporter this is the final product. A huge pool of sludge consisting of copper, cadmium and zinc. This sludge doesnt stay here, it gets hauled back to the top of the mountain and this job it never ends. The acid generating potential of the mountain is another 1500 years. At least 1500 years. But this operation now run and paid for by the company that settled with the epa, it will gehanded over to all of us. In 2030 the epa will take over. A 500,000 account.
