Its now drifting about 1,000 miles off the coast of mexico. Now the air National Guards 129th rescue wing is sending the second wave of help. How dangerous is this . Its probably one of the most Dangerous Things that we do. But like i told the other guys, though, we train for this all the time. Reporter before the family departed mexico, lyra got sick with salmonella. She got better but her condition worsen the at sea. And the family called for help yesterday morning. By the same afternoon, four air National Guardsmen parachuted in and boarded the sailboat. Lyra is now in stable condition. This m c130 refuels rescue helicopters in midair if needed. Its a lot of military might, a price tag somewhere in six figures. All for one baby . Absolutely. Yeah. For any american citizen and frankly anybody who gets sick out at sea, were the guys to call. Well throw everything at it to bring somebody home. Reporter eric is a Software Executive based in san diego with sailing experience. Charlotte is a magazine writer. They were going up and down the mexican coast before going to new zealand. I cant speak to it. If they thought it was safe, then more than likely it was safe enough. Reporter i guess youre not here to judge them . Absolutely not, no. Reporter the plan now is to move a navy ship closer to the sailboat so they can make the rescue with a helicopter without having to refuel in midair. That is a risky maneuver. They dont like to do that if they dont have to. They will then take the family to the hospital somewhere in the u. S. And then abandon that sailboat. At moffett field, kiet do, kpix 5. Meanwhile another Bay Area Team is headed out to help today. Menlo parks elite urban search andrescue task force just finished exercises up in anchoragealaska and will head to oso, washington, to help with the mud slide disaster that has killed 30 people. The 20man group will be there for 10 to 14 days. Developing news on bart delays. Its been a rough commute all morning and the problems are not solved yet. Trains are running 15 to 20 minutes late because of whats described as an equipment failure in the transbay tube. Riders are running out of patience even at this hour. It was slow this morning. Pretty frustrating. Crews are still working on fixing the problem. Until its fixed, trains run on manual mode which is causing the slowdowns. People at the 12th and lake merritt stations are now being rerouted. Got a live look outside showing the sun in some areas. Should get better by later this afternoon. Heaviest rain is further to the south towards san jose. We are seeing very heavy downpours there right now into mountain view, towards saratoga, rotating through. It will be in san jose very shortly. But we have these popup showers that will likely continue not only now but into the afternoon. We have a pretty good cell now headed into richmond. So you get the idea more of these storms developing into the afternoon. Then it looks like things are going to begin to settle down and as we look toward the weekend, well, its going to be an entirely different story, guys. Reporter it is a very tough job to patrol the streets of oakland. But 47 new officers say they are ready to do it. Whoo reporter they have to pass academic, physical and mental tests before even getting into the academy. Six months later, they are ready to hit the streets. The 47 new officers joining the opd were begin their badges this morning. The department has been understaffed for years. The chief expects the new additions to perk up the whole force. One of the big complaints we have now is the amount of overtime they have to work to cover for vacant beats. So more cops lessens that burden and were happy. Reporter this class started with 57 but 10 couldnt make it through. The 47 new officers, five live in oakland. None of the 47 had any prior Law Enforcement training. They will be paired up with a veteran oakland officer for 16 weeks of Field Training so they can learn how to apply their new skills to these city streets. And some of these new officers will be out on those beats as soon as this weekend. Live in oakland, anne makovec, kpix 5. New details about two men shot by Law Enforcement in fairfield. They are brothers 27yearold Markell Davis from fairfield and 33yearold cory davis from suisun city. Both wanted in connection with a february attempted homicide. Law enforcement found out the men were in the vicinity of a walmart in fairfield yesterday afternoon. During the attempt to arrest them at two separate locations, shots were fired by police and federal agents. Both men were wounded but no information is being released on their conditions. And a developing story out of oakland where an overnight fire is being described as suspicious. The flames were spotted about 2 30 this morning outside the back of a former singlefamily home. Childrens hospital is using the building on 53rd street for offices. The fire was out in about 10 minutes. And nobody was hurt. Checking some other bay area headlines now, he survived combat in the middle east only to be killed by a suspected drunk driver. Today, marine Lance Corporal andrew silva will be laid to rest. He was hit and killed last week in fremont while riding his motorcycle. Silva was planning to return to school. Funeral services are under way at st. Anns Catholic Church in union city. Today a former San Francisco supervisor ed jew will surrender as he begins serving a oneyear sentence in county jail. He served five years in federal prison for extortion and related offenses. The new jail term is for perjury. The judge rejected his attorneys request to let him serve those sentences concurrently. And the alleged middleman in the Corruption Scandal involving state senator leland yee is out of jail. Keith jackson released on 250,000 bail yesterday. He was one of 26 defendants in a public Corruption Case that also landed state senator leland yee in jail. Some bad news as the bay area home buying season begins. Reporter frank, brendan eich was just settling into the new position 11 days into being ceo at mozilla where the criticism of his views on gay marriage pushed him out of the company he helped to create. Popular dating website okcupid giving its okay to the news that brendan eich is leaving ceo. He resigned entirely from the company. Reporter the dating site boycotted the Software Community best known for its firefox browser after learning about eichs prior support of proposition 8. Prop 8 was the constitutional amendment that banned samesex marriage until it was later struck down last year. In 2008, eich donated 1,000 to proposition 8s campaign. This was a big deal. A lot of people supported eich and said its freedom of speech for him. The other half of the internet said, you know, uhm, that he, uhm, being antigay marriage was not suitable to lead mozilla. Reporter his contribution was publicly reported in 2012 and drew some negative attention then. But when he was promoted to ceo, the backlash grew exponentially. Every mile a band will be playing music and then the finish line we have, you know, the postrace concert, the finish line featuring the neighborhood. But when you cook it you have to shave the very top like this just take like a peeler and shave the very top off so its nice and tender. If you dont do that, you know whats going to happen .
