Kpix 5s anne makovec joins us live from the scene where firefighters are actually still dousing some of the hot spots. Anne. Reporter the future of this building is uncertain this afternoon. Police are now in the process of finally reopening Mission Street but you can see the sidewalk behind me on either side of the building is closed. It will be for some time. And firefighters have been here all morning long watching for flareups on the third floor. In all the noise and the chaos of last nights inferno. One sound was missing according to people who live here. The fire alarm. Nothing. Reporter jamie has an office on the second floor and was in the building when the fire broke out just before 7 p. M. Tried to get to some of my stuff buy i couldnt. The fire went too fast. Reporter one man died after firefighters pulled him out. He lived in one of 18 apartments on the heavily damaged third floor. Five other people were taken to the hospital including one firefighter. Today, 54 people are homeless and about 20 Small Businesses are closed. I have a 90gallon fish tank in there that im hoping i can get the fish out if they are still alive. Reporter the investigation into how this fire started is just beginning. City inspectors will be looking into the alarm system. They said it was last checked two years ago and at that point everything was up to code. But last night we are hearing that there were reports from witnesses that there were no audible alarms in the building that they heard. So without warning, there was a fire. Reporter even the fire escapes appeared questionable. Fire firefighters had to rescue 12 people trapped by fire. Some of our firefighters had a difficult time accessing certain residences. One person described it as mazelike. That made it very challenging for us. Reporter back out here live now at mission and 22nd, you can see some of the broken windows up there on the third floor. The name of the man killed in the fire hasnt been released yet. The red cross is helping families who are displaced. Right now, Ucdavis Medical Center confirms its treating a patient suspected of having ebola. The patient will have tests in an isolation room. This would be the first case of ebola in california if the patient has it. Officials said, ucdavis is fully prepared to safely assess and treat the patient. Measures put in place to protect the health and safety of hospital workers and patient include protective equipment and an isolation room. The Measles Outbreak that started in Southern California has now infected 95 people in 8 states and mexico. Most of the cases are in california. Most are linked to disneyland. Palm Desert High School suspended 66 students for two weeks because they have not been vaccinated. Most of those with the disease were not vaccinated. We have given people a false sense of security and in situations like this it reminds us of the importance of these diseases and really the benefit of vaccines. In arizona, 7 cases are confirmed and 1,000 people may have been exposed. San Francisco Police will soon release a description of a person of interest after a suitcase was found with body parts inside. It was discovered yesterday on 11th street between mission and market streets. Police found it after responding to a 911 call about a suspicious package. Surrounding area was shut down and police found more remains nearby. Investigators say its not clear yet whether all the remains belong to one victim. A burning smell forcing a United Airline flight to land shortly after takeoff from l. A. X. It made the Emergency Landing at nearby ontario airport around 9 00 this morning. Flight 1181 was headed to washington, d. C. Nobody was injured. Investigators are looking into what happened.
