When San Jose Police got a 911 call reporting a man with a knife who entered a home that end what his own. He had moved out about two months ago. Fay buchanan lives there, his motherinlaw, says she invited him in. He said he was unhappy, wasnt feeling right. You know . Things in his life. Young kids just couldnt handle whatever stress life has to offer. Reporter buchanan says no one in the house feared for his life. Watkins left the house and for some reason apparently called 911 himself. Officers arrived and confronted watkins in the street. The subject was carrying a knife and charged at officers. They ordered him to drop the weapon. He did not. They fired from their duty weapons striking him at least one time. Reporter buchanan was standing behind her soninlaw. And his daughter watched the police shoot him. They didnt have to do that. They could have tased him. Im screaming begging them, telling them he needs help. Please help him. Dont shoot. Reporter watkins played football for de anza college. He was engaged to his ex girlfriend but they broke up. He was distraught over the breakup. He was trying to better himself. I didnt want him to be betrayed as a gangbanger, intruder, as a, you know, just a crazed out you know person because thats know he is. Like my brother said he was trying to get his self together. West coast ports including oakland are closed right now and will stay closed for most of the long holiday weekend. Sharon chin introduces us to this weeks jefferson award winner. Thats playful and joyful. Thats great. Reporter quilting is the fabric of linda hannawalts life. Quilts mean something to people. We call them a fabric hug. Reporter a hug from linda and her 100 volunteers at quiltworks, the San Francisco nonprofit she founded four years ago. Our goal this year is 800 to 1,000 quilts. Reporter she distributes hundreds of hand crafted gifts a year to the homeless, veterans and lowincome families and most recently foster children. The children all were so excited about the pillowcases. Reporter and linda started talking to caseworkers to find out what foster children need and that led to another project. These are for the foster children. Reporter the project targets 18yearolds who grow out of foster care. And what broke my heart is i was told they dont have suitcases when they age out. They hand them a garbage bag to put their belongings in. And i said, no. I said i want something really colorful and fun. Reporter so linda asked the delancey Street Foundation to help sell hundreds of personalized duffel bags. At least they have something thats theirs on day one. Reporter board member alice thomas admires lindas endless energy. She just has that magic power. Its like she wiggles her nose and poof, its done. [ laughter ] reporter linda funds the nonprofit mostly out of her own pocket. She purchased all the quilting and sewing machines, bought fabric from more than a dozen stores that closed, and converted rooms from her two condos for sewing and supplies. Linda also runs a boutique where she sells donated and hand made crafts to fund quiltworks programs. Next door, she operates a fabric store for atrisk young people where they get hands on job training. 24. Reporter intern faijon ekah says she sews seeds of wisdom.
