Unless he is running on the shoulder. I know. I guess. So he is trying. Well see. The storm has also caused major damage in the south bay. And it looks like the wet roads are already causing problems in the bay area including a crash blocking lanes in livermore. Well tell you about it coming up. Good morning, its tuesday, december 16. Im michelle griego. Hi, everyone. Im frank mallicoat. Nearly 5 30 right now. All lanes are blocked on highway 17 right now near los gatos. Thats where kpix 5s kiet do is close to that area right now. He joins us via phone with an update. What can you tell us. Reporter we live on southbound highway 17 where the chp has diverted traffic on to summit road. If you are going northbound 17 they are turning cars around at officer what was that turn around . Glenwood. Reporter so glenwood. They have 100 cars stacked up on the northbound side. As you are heading in this direction its a good idea to stay away because a tree went down somewhere in between laurel and glenwood. The tree is of unknown height and whats complicating matters is that power lines are also across the road as well so all lanes of highway 17 are blocked at this time. There is no estimated time of reopening. This happened at 4 30 this morning. Pg e crews are en route here but it is foggy. It is tree down power lines, um, this is a a very, um, interesting situation out here as drivers are really surprised to come up on these roadblocks and speeding up on the scene. So thats the latest now. We are waiting for word to get closer to the scene so we can bring you images. I understand that chopper 5 is en route and well have pictures overhead in just a couple of minutes but for now, we are stuck on highway 17, um, stay away if you can. Back to you. Kiet, are you moving at all . No. We are literally sitting on the highway right now at the roadblock waiting for the word to get closer. The crews are undergoing a shift change right now so theres they are dont have the manpower to escort it down there just yet so we are literally sitting right on the freeway in the left lane just at the summit. On 17. Thank you, kiet. Highway 17 is shut down because of power lines and tree blocking the way. The rain is helping reservoirs across the state but more is needed to make a dent in the threeyear drought. At folsom lake the water levels have risen 7 feet in the past week. But the department of Water Resources says its still at 37 of capacity up 20 from 11 mondays ago. Lake shasta is up to 31 over the last week. The rain helped provide over 94 billion gallons a oneyear supply for 540,000 families. Thats a drop in the bucket. We need 6 or 7 stores like last thursday to get out of the drought. It could happen. It could. It could happen but then you have the aftereffects, you know, the after all the damage. Mud slides. Aftereffects. Yes. And thats whats really so worrisome about the tree down in the Santa Cruz Mountains right now. There was no wind that brought that tree down. I checked the observations. Well have some wind later this afternoon as storm 2 makes tracks and moves into the bay area. Good morning, everybody. Its our hidef Doppler Radar. Things are actually kind of quieting down now. We have had a series of cells containing moderate to heavy downpours move through this morning alone. Winds under 5 Miles Per Hour out of the southeast at this particular time. We are on the back side of yesterdays front that brought 2. 75 of rain to san rafael. Over an inch in San Francisco. We are on the back side of it but this is the second storm system and right now well start to see the leading edge about 1 00 in the north bay. And all this comes in and it will be fierce during the afternoon hours with steady rains through the evening commute. And some very gusty winds out of the southeast and a lot of unstable air mass. Its really juiced up at this particular time. So as we realize our daytime highs in the 50s and low 60s you, you cant rule out the possibility of an isolated thunderstorm through the evening hours. So meanwhile, we will pick up another additional two inches of rain over the next 24 hours in the wettest locations. Lingering showers on wednesday. The only dry day will be thursday. Storm 3 queued up, coming in friday. You just heard kiet do stuck in the backup in the Santa Cruz Mountains on highway 17. Both directions of 17 are closed in the Santa Cruz Mountains near the glenwood drive cutoff. They are turning cars around southbound at the summit and then northbound they are turning cars around at glenwood and they told us a little earlier that they were up to 100 vehicles, cars and trucks, stuck, waiting to get turned around. To avoid the area, highway 9 or you can use 152 to 101. Better yet, stay home, delay your trip a little bit if you can and well let you know as soon as we hear about any possibility of lanes opening. But with a big tree and live power lines in the roadway you know it is going to take longer to clear. We also have another hot spot now westbound 580 Altamont Pass to the dublin interchange. Its already heavy, a large drive time for this time of the morning. 26 minutes but its actually eastbound where we have a multi vehicle crash eastbound 580 at springtown. It is causing a bit of a delay in the westbound lanes. Some lookyloo traffic, you can see it there from vasco all the way down past your springtown exit. Meanwhile bay bridge filling in in the cash lanes. Still no metering lights. It looks okay across the span. They cleared some earlier flooding that was a little issue overnight near the skyway in the eastbound lanes. Heres a live look in oakland. 880 nimitz freeway great no problems near the oakland coliseum. No major flooding along 101 near lucky drive looks okay so far across the golden gate. Back to you guys. So you can see its causing a huge traffic mess on both directions of highway 17. And were hearing now that crews are having a hard time getting there because the traffic jam is bad, up to 100 cars in the northbound lanes. So turning cars around southbound just south of the summit and then northbound they are actually turning cars around closer to glenwood. Avoid highway 9. Use 152 to 101 go to summit road and to the freeway. Its a mess. If you can wait it out thats your best bet. Westbound 580 road are wet. We had flooding reports, some spinouts earlier.
