upper deck into san francisco, westbound 80 ashby to powell only two lanes open until 5:00. today france declared three days of national mourning after a man plowed a large truck through crowds that had gathered for fireworks. 84 people are dead, two of them americans. the bastille day attack happened on a seaside promenade in nice. the latest now from tina kraus reporter: forensic teams in nice examined the bullet ridden white truck overnight its driver named as [ non-english name ] by cbs news sources mowed down by people celebrating bastille day just hours before. this amateur video shows police shooting at the driver as the truck stopped. moments before, eye witnesses captured the vehicle picking up speed as it barreled down the promenade. >> i seen one guy running, sobbing, crying, people holding baby, screaming, shouting, mothers running for cover. >> reporter: 51 sean copeland from texas and his 11-year-old son brody were killed. people hid in a storage room in a restaurant amid the chaos. >> we wanted to believe it was just firecrackers going off or fireworks but it became clear it was something more sinister. [ speaking french ] >> reporter: hours after the attack, french president francois hollande declared terror hit the country again. president obama condemned the attack. french officials are looking into who else played a role. no group has claimed responsibility so far. tina kraus, cbs news. >> in a statement, president obama said, we stand in solidarity and partnership with france our oldest ally as they respond to and recover from this attack. this comes eight months after the attack that killed 130 people in paris. after yesterday's attack, france's president francois hollande ordered a three-month extension of a state of emergency. at the same time as the attack in nice, a fire causedded a scare in paris. a truck carrying fireworks burst into flames next to the eiffel tower. smoke surrounded the landmark. that prompted a lot of false rumors in the "twitter world" that the tower was on fire after a terror attack. the eiffel tower was not damaged and paris police emphasize that the fire was not terror-related. in response to yesterday's attack, at&t is giving a break to customers trying to reach loved ones in france. the company says it will waive or credit cell phone charges incurred for such calls through sunday. menlo park-based facebook is also trying to help by activating its safety check feature. that allows everyone near the attack site to post whether they are safe. to campaign 2016. after the nice attack, both hillary clinton and donald trump agreed we're fighting a wharf sorts with isis. reporter brian webb shares their differing strategies and trump's vice-presidential decision that went under the radar. >> reporter: after the massacre in nice, france during a bastille day celebration, donald trump said on fox news if he is elected president he would ask congress for a declaration of war against isis. >> i would. this is war!! if you look at it, this is war coming from all different parts and frankly, it's war and we're dealing with people without uniforms. >> reporter: trump delayed today's announcement of his vice-presidential pick because of the attack. cbs news has confirmed his vp pick will be indiana governor mike pence. in a separate interview, hillary clinton said the u.s. is in a war against radical jihadist groups and said she would focus on building a stronger coalition to prevent future attacks. >> it's a different kind of war. we need to be smart about how we wage it but we have to be determined that we are going to win it. >> reporter: after the terror attack in orlando, one month ago, u.s. authorities were already on high alert ahead of next week's republican national convention. >> cleveland authorities and the planners for that event and the one in philadelphia have to look at this as having the potential to inspire somebody domestically with its ease because trucks, moving trucks, transport vehicles like this, are everywhere. >> clearly, the nays have it. >> reporter: last night in cleveland a gop committee defeated an effort to unbind delegates at next week's convention. it's a major blow to a group who wanted to stop trump's nomination. brian webb for cbs news. >> as for donald trump's vp choice, pence is not well known. kpix 5 political analyst melissa caen says that trump likes the idea of his other half staying out of the headlines. >> pence is a big help for trump. this is a really strategically good move on his part. what he brings to the table is a normal run of the mill conservative republican, right? [ chuckling ] this guy is not going to go off the reservation, he is going to stand there and say what he needs to say [ chuckling ] and be a good sidekick and make conservatives in the party feel a little better trying to get comfortable with trump. >> there's buzz about hillary clinton's running mate. she met with several people on her short list. one of her visits was with virginia senator tim kaine. but after campaigning with him, she continued to play the field taking a closed-door meeting with massachusetts senator elizabeth warren. a new nationwide cbs news poll shows clinton and trump tied at 40% each. this may be sobering news for clinton's camp since the democratic contender boasted a 6-point advantage over the billionaire just a month ago. it is 4:36. let's check traffic and the atmosphere from that east bay fire and that south bay fire, rather, 53 degrees in santa rosa right now, livermore 59, 55 oakland. so we have the east hills in the santa clara valley that was on fire about this time 24 hours ago. a lot of those pollutants were trapped around the santa clara valley. east bay you, too had some pretty hazy sunshine yesterday. air quality will be unhealthy again today primarily inland. temperatures talking about numbers 60s beaches, 80s around the peninsula, upper 80s low 90s around the santa clara valley up to 96 degrees in brentwood today 80 in vallejo north bay numbers at 65 in stinson beach to 84 in novato. full forecast coming up. but right now, here's gianna. >> we are going to get a bridge check right now. so far traffic is okay this morning. it is "friday light" for the most part as you work your way across the san mateo bridge. no accidents or incidents. there is ongoing overnight closures on the westbound side of the bridge. but they should have everything wrapped up by 5:00. looks like traffic is okay working through there. eastbound if you are commuting out of foster city into hayward, traffic also pretty light on this friday. golden gate bridge easy ride southbound 101 if you are going from 580 to san francisco. even north of there, light conditions south 101 through novato. bay bridge off to a good start no metering lights yet. back to you all right, gianna. two men accused of an armed highs outside a bank are suspected of a similar crime in los angeles county. ivan morales is accused of wounding a truck guard during the heist. after that crime, serge gutsu allegedly fired at a calistoga police officer. gutsu had a black eye and was in a wheelchair during yesterday's arraignment in santa rosa. he was injured at the end of the pursuit when an officer rammed the car gutsu was driving. tuesday's heist outside the chase bank in windsor's lakewood shopping center is similar to a robbery in southern california back in march. in that case, an armored truck guard was robbed in front of a granada hills supermarket. both men are now suspected in that crime. gutsu is also expected to be charged in the killing of a quizno sandwich shop owner san dimas last year. in hayward, the father of a 4-year-old is killed while driving to his daughter's daycare. kpix 5's da lin explains how surveillance video helped bust the suspects and what cops still need to close the case reporter: what appeared to be a targeted hit played out on a busy city intersection. >> it was loud, four loud gunshots, pow, pow, pow, pow, scary. >> reporter: witnesses say a gunman walked up to the passenger side of this red truck and shot the driver execution-style. they say the victim was bleeding heavily from the neck. a witness tried to help but it was too late. >> he was calm down, lie down on the side of truck taking his last breaths of air. >> reporter: the victim is aidan kettani from antioch. the suspect respected ran to the tracks. witnesses say his accomplice a woman fled in a red jeep. randy saw it, hiding in this truck. >> he was wearing gloves so to me it looked like it was a hit. >> people will wear gloves to hide gunshot residue and fingerprints and dna. it shows some forethought into the act. >> reporter: alameda county sheriff's deputies arrested the suspect and a female driver but they are still looking for the gun. >> along the suspect's past he discarded that gun. but we're talking about an area that's close to a mile long and maybe a quarter mile wide. >> reporter: they searched for house to house but nothing. now they are asking neighbors to keep an eye out for the murder weapon. there's a makeshift memorial at the intersection. no mugshots being released. they are trying to find out the motive. in cherryland, i'm da lin, kpix 5. as the fire season intensifies one palo alto fire station will be closed. fire station 8 in foothills park served about 160 homes in the area in response to calls from campers and bicyclists. but the palo alto fire department decided to close the seasonal station for the first time in years. the closure will save the city more than a quarter million dollars in overtime pay. department's total budget is $28 million. >> the firefighters are shocked. the overall cost of keeping it open is so low especially for an affluent city, and the risk is high. >> the fire chief said they did a detailed analysis. out of 43 calls last summer more than half were not for emergencies and the fire engine was canceled before arriving on the scene. he went on to say that the department has mutual aid agreements with neighboring agencies in woodside and santa clara county. he said the money will be used more efficiently elsewhere and safety will not be compromised. in emeryville, a massive fire burns apartments and homes and cars. now investigators are offering $10,000 to anyone who knows what sparked the flames. the fire ripped through this six-story apartment building on san pablo avenue last week. in addition to destroying the building under construction, five townhomes and several cars were charred. the reward goes to anyone with credible information on the cause. time now 4:42. people glued to their phones playing "pokemon go." next hear from a woman who trespassed to catch a pokemon and now regrets it. ,, ,,,,,, hearing about pokã0mon go. urpassed cand at this point if you are not playing the game you're probably sick of hearing about "pokemon go." but the game is now surpassing candy crush as the biggest mobile game in history. did you know zoo all across the country are one of the best places to play the game. but two people in ohio took their pokemon hunting too far and broke into their local zoo after hours. robin bartholomew and her friend adrian crawford jumped a for instance in the toledo zoo and were spotted on security cameras at 2:30 a.m. she told a news crew after her arrest she regretted the decision. >> doesn't matter if it's a [ indiscernible ] don't break into people's property to catch it. >> sounds like common sense. most zoos say they welcome visitors coming to play the game because they know they have a lot of special locations within their property. but they want to keep visitors safe so follow the rules. so the two zoo trespassers will go to court this morning. they are facing the possibility of one to six months in jail. back here in california, one "pokemon go" player got himself into trouble playing the game. two men went over a cliff in san diego county while trying to capture the virtual creatures. police say that they climbed through a fence to an area marked with warning signs. one man fell 50 feet, the other 90 feet to the beach below. firefighters hoisted both back to safety. >> it took a team of firefighters and lifeguards and special equipment to assemble a cliff rescue rope rig and they ascended down the side of the bluff here and actually had to put a harness on one of these individuals and bring him back up. >> the men were taken to a local hospital to be checked out. with "pokemon go" players finding critters everywhere, some places are considered inappropriate for gaming like a cemetery. >> well, yeah. reporter sharon raja takes us to modes where pokemon fans are a problem reporter: the cemeteries appear to be the hot spots for pokemon players. there's a line of cars behind me hundreds of people making their way her throughout the day but especially at night but the superintendent of the cemeteries tell me that the players just don't have respect for the families who have loved ones laid to rest here. ♪[ music ] >> reporter: with their heads buried in their phones, "pokemon go" users are everywhere, walking around the cemetery at night sitting in their cars hoping to catch critters. >> over here we have 'em like just everywhere. so it's just a good place for pokey stops. >> playing pokemon. there's a lot of spots here. >> reporter: brendan a 9-year- old on a mission unfazed by the gravestones around him. >> if there wasn't so much pokemon stops here there wouldn't be so much people. >> reporter: but the superintendent of the five cemetery properties on scenic drive in modesto says the numbers are out of hand. >> yeah. this place gets slammed every night. they start about 5:00. i came in here the other night we had probably 70 cars in here. and probably 2 to 3 to 400 people. >> reporter: he says players are leaving behind trash, walking on graves and disrupting funeral services. >> people come out here for the quiet and peace to sit with loved ones. when you have something like this going on, it's very disrespectful. >> if i had a loved one buried there, i would not want people playing a game in a sacred place. >> reporter: wednesday night modesto police had to be brought in to help remove crowds off private property. >> the game does not change general laws of trespass. >> if people can not destroy things not tag things not make a mess, then i don't see why it's such a big deal. just stay off the grass and stay off -- people's family members. >> reporter: the pokemon creator has set up a way for places to be removed from the "pokemon go" spots and the cemetery has put in a request. but they haven't heard back yet. >> okay. "pokemon go." you still haven't downloaded it. >> oh, i did. >> you deleted it? >> i did. my kids were really into pokemon back in the day when we had the cards and that was an obsession for a few years, watched the movie which was a complete flop although i do love pikachu. but no, it took up too much memory on my phone. i don't have time for that. >> you would rather cycle. >> you learn a lot of landmarks around the city because you have to go to various places. but we should keep out eyes on the sky. >> just don't fall off a cliff. >> you won't fall off a cliff if you keep your eyes to the sky and look at the beautiful conditions. today is stellar. it's going to be a typical summertime pattern in the bay area. we are noticing the enhancement of the marine layer. if you look at the transamerica pyramid we have 3600 windows there and 800 feet up, you won't see a view out of those windows because we have the overcast conditions. temperatures right now are into the 50s. we do have a light wind. we need a good gust to blow out some of the pollution. not going to see it much around the area except towards the delta, fairfield southwest winds at 23 miles an hour. today the third consecutive day of "spare the air," above average temperatures in our inland areas, but downright gloomy at the coast. we have some areas of localized drizzle this morning all associated with the condensation from that marine layer. here's our futurecast. by 1:00, we are still socked in along the seashore but the clouds retreat from the bay but we have a lot of cooler air mass associated with that enhancement so the temperatures are coming down. right there i wanted to stop around midnight because that's when the trough blows through. that's going to cause some mixing and bring down some cooler air mass. our weekend will be cooler and more seasonal than what we have been experiencing for 48 to 72 hours inland. ridge of high pressure is beginning to exit as this trough moves in. end result, travel weather still hot in the central valley. 83 high sierra. 63 monterey bay. numbers like this, 60s beaches, 70s around the bay, 80s peninsula, low and mid-90s away from the bay. the winds variable to 15. notice the cooler conditions over the weekend and unseasonal weather pattern through thursday. tomorrow, we kick-start the menlo summerfest. 75 beautiful degrees in menlo park. enjoy your friday. let's check your friday roadways if you are working your way towards the bay bridge this morning, we have a traffic alert just in from chp. there is an accident on the upper deck of the bay bridge. we have two right lanes completely shut down with injuries reported. expect big delays as you work your way through there again westbound bay bridge you will see delays approaching treasure island for this accident on the upper deck. just before that as you approach the toll plaza right now traffic is moving at okay speeds. it is pretty early so we are going to keep an eye on that. traffic alert westbound at the bay bridge. looking elsewhere off the eastshore freeway towards the bay bridge, westbound from ashley to powell street they cleared this roadwork everything now open so no delays off the eastshore freeway. in fact, if you are traveling from the carquinez bridge to the maze, 19 to 20 minutes there. you might want to use mass transit depending how long that traffic delay will be on the bay bridge. right now everything on time systemwide. san mateo bridge, westbound between 880 and 101. still holding steady at 13 minutes to about 15 minutes to get across the span. really haven't seen any struggles there. that early-morning roadwork should be cleared. you will have one more night at least of overnight closures so plan for that. elsewhere golden gate bridge easy start, they just did the lane changes. you have four lanes heading southbound out of marin county into san francisco. 14 minutes, 580 down to the golden gate bridge toll plaza. back to you. >> thank you. a north carolina man with the last name music just married his wife in a rock star fashion. the dark haired duo said i do at the top of a roller coaster. james and courtney did look at typical venues like churches and ballrooms but every location proved boring. so they decided to get married at the amusement park where they met. they tied the knot before plunging 320 feet on the furry -- on the fury roller coaster and even after that stomachs sank, these lovebirds were still beaming. >> pretty good job. so i guess we all falling for each other. >> have it done exactly like we imagined and then it's so much more, it's like a dream come true honestly. its perfect. >> so perfect that the couple made sure to pick up the photos of their roller coaster wedding. pretty cool. >> they got a good lesson in marriage, too. they were patient while they were waiting in line, right?
