Show you both sources that give us the reading for what the air qualitys like. The first one is the official one from the epa. These are the air quality sensors, the map we just showed you, where the entire bay was in yellow. Thats good and its an improvement. Yesterday most of them were in the orange or red. There were plenty of sensors reading unhealthy yesterday. So today is an improvement on the official sensors that are calibrated by professionals and they only update once an hour. Theres another source you can look at which a lot of people have gotten used to and those are the low cost sensors scattered over a butch bigger area. You might even have one or someone in your neighborhood certainly does. Those tend to read a little more on the unpleasant side. When you look at that, there are still many air quality sensors reading unhealthy for sensitive groups. Bottom line, we still have an air quality advisory today and tomorrow. Its better, but we arent out of this yet. Theres your forecast tomorrow. It wont change, but on saturday it will. I can show you how things improve. Theres the fire that smith river complex which has been putting all the smoke into the atmosphere, for the last few days the winds have been taking all that smoke and bringing it right down here. Look at the windfield. Watch how this changes. Thats how well improve this. Those winds will stop transporting that smoke this way, but its not till saturday. The next few hours theres a little more smoke right off the coast thats likely going to get pulled onshore. Air quality may go down a little in the next few hours, but the general theme is improving. By saturday well notice that certainly. We mentioned the possibility of rain. Ill be back in the first alert forecast. Well look at monday. Theres a rain chance for the north bay. For now back to you. Thanks so much. For a check of the air quality in your neighborhood and an updated first alert forecast, head to our website, kpix. Com. Car breakins in San Francisco are nothing new, but some people say theyre getting more rampant and today city hall held a hearing in an of the to curb the smash and grabs. Reporter theres a lot of frustration regarding these car breakins. Look at this part of the street on haight street, the shattered glass just steps away from restaurants, businesses, bookstores, people Walking Around and theyre all telling me theyre fed up. They just cant take it anymore. Haight streets recurrent problem unfolds like clockwork. Well see them and cars come right around the corner and its quick. Theyve got it down to a science. Its fast. Its swift, you dont even know its happening till its already over. Reporter denny gabuio has seen it all, people breaking into cars right outside his shoe store. Hes been the manager of john fluevog shoes on haight street since 1997. I dont see any changes happening. Reporter denny expressed this frustration in a letter sent to a public hearing discussing strategies to combat San Franciscos car breakin problem organized by supervisor dean preston. The city has made no noticeable progress, doesnt mean theres been no progress, but you dont see the results in terms of a reduction in car breakins and folks are understandably frustrated and visitors to our city are not only losing money and property, but often left traumatized and with a very bad experience. Reporter but denny tells me he wants to see more than just conversations. He says that this issue is not just affecting individuals. Its impacting local businesses as well. Youre like damned if you do or dont. You carry your stuff, youre a target. You put your stuff in the trunk, youre possibly going to get broken into. Honestly, for a lot of people its easier to shop online. Maybe i dont have to go down to that store and park and possibly be broken into. Reporter this is a personal battle for him, originally from canada but devoted to San Francisco admitting hes contemplated leaving the city many times. However at the end of the day im always hopeful. On my break ill go for a walk in Golden Gate Park and its beautiful and then i see a broken car window and i get frustrated again. Reporter so for now hes committed to his work, selling shoes while cautioning customers about the challenges out there as he clings to hope that the city he cherishes will once again find its way. Denny tells me that hes been working with other Business Leaders in this part of the city to keep pushing the elected officials to start acting now. I am looking forward to seeing that action because my car got broken into last tuesday. Back to you. Jose, i know your car got broken into a couple times. As a Business Owner for denny, what does he hope the city actually does . Reporter he wants those cameras out here to actually become a part of that strategy. He doesnt understand why if theres too many cameras everywhere, why cant they just track these people and put them in jail . Thank you very much, Jose Martinez live in the haight district. Just this weekend, tourists at fort mason tried to confront two people who broke into their van. Video of one of the tourists was hanging off the side as those thieves made a getaway in that suv. That video has gone viral. Despite some low profile incidents like that one, the number of car breakins reported in San Francisco is actually slightly down this year. Meanwhile San Francisco continues efforts to attract people back to the downtown districts landing at ledisdorf, a pedestrian area with Outdoor Dining for multiple restaurants with regular art events, live music and Outdoor Fitness classes twice a week. The intersection also has new murals right below the transamerica building. While many businesses in San Francisco have had to raise prices to make up for rising costs and fewer customers, one well known restaurant is taking the opposite approach. Well explain why coming up at 5 30. This was the scene at the toyota Berkeley Service center c actually is in albany after police say a man walked in and opened fire shortly after 11 00 this morning. Anne makovec joins us with the very latest on this case. That man walked in and shot and killed a woman who worked in that Service Center and then he wound up dead in a shootout with police. Police in both berkeley and albany started getting calls of an active shooter around a quarter after 11 00 this morning. No information on the victim or gunman will be released until their families are off inned. Thank you. Oakland mayor sheng thao said she stands behind her decision to fire former police chief Leronne Armstrong despite a recent report that found inaccuracies in the investigation that ultimately led to armstrongs firing. The report even recommended the mayor consider reinstating armstrong to his old job. However, mayor thao said it wasnt the actual investigation that led her to firearm strong. It was mr. Armstrongs actions following the release and i have always been clear about this of the report that led to his termination. My administration is completely focused on continuing to reform opd, delivering the Community Safety Services Oakland needs and deserves right now and finally bringing the city out of this federal oversight. The vast majority of oaklanders know this is not about any one person and im not going to be distracted from the real work we need to actually do. Mayor thao said those other issues are rising violence and property theft, saying opd and u. S. Marshals have recently arrested more than 130 fugitives wanted for crimes in the city. We are committed to doing this ongoing work and really Pay Attention to how we can move forward to keep oakland safe in this moment right now. Mayor thao says she is waiting on a list of recommendations for a new police chief from the citys police commission, but stresses whoever is hired must help get the department out of its 20year federal oversight. Still ahead, months after the sudden death of oakland native angus cloud, the coroner now releasing new details on what exactly happened. As the 49ers take the field for their home opener tonight, how the team is speaking and reaching their the red and gold faithful are out ready to cheer on the 9ers as they take on the new york giants tonight at levi stadium. But the big question is will the smoky conditions and poor air quality put a damper on tailgating festivities . I kind of doubt it. Theres even fans coming from new york, not just because theyre new york giants fans. Some of them are 9ers fans. It is heritage night and that celebration started on the way from the tailgate outside here. Lets go to some video here. You had some mexican flags out there. You could see it from a distance. The 9er faithful, we know they are dedicated. You got a lot of fans who are latino and they come with their flags. One family was having a birthday part. You could hear them from a distance in the parking lot. There are a lot of families here who come ready with their food. One person we met, adrian franco, he drove from tracy. He says hes been coming to games the last 20 years and the 9ers honor latino heritage month, thats special. Thats my heritage, my blood. I was born and raised in california, but my familys mexican. My grandpas from mexico and thats where i come from. This is mexican music. Its my culture. To recognize latino and the mexican heritage, its part of our culture. Its awesome. Reporter look at all these fans still making their way in. People are excited to see their quarterback brock purdy and a lot of other players coming in 20. I know were all excited. The game is about to start in a couple minutes. As you can see, were ready here. Im just jealous how many people got to get off work that early to get to the game. I know. Thats pretty fun. Reporter i remember last season, ryan, you said you wanted a jersey. Im here. Tell me which of brock purdy you want . I want to see yamamoto on the back, the whole last name. I have to go classic. I have to go with the rice, jerry rice jersey. He is the man. Or montana. As you might imagine, the 49ers have a huge Spanish Speaking fan base. Shawn chitnis introduces us to the man who provides a soundtrack to the game for those fans. Reporter jesus has been a member of the faithful well before moving to the bay area. Born in mexico, he got a 49ers gold jacket from his dad that made him a fan for life. Now he gets to clear on the team professionally as a playbyplay announcer, covering games in spanish. Its amazing. Its something really special, a dream come true. Reporter jesus moved to the bay area when he was in elementary school. He studied Sports Broadcasting at San Francisco state and since 2018 hes been working for the Team Broadcasting games each week. Its very important to make people feel part of this and i think the 49ers do a great job, excellent job with that. Reporter fans are learning in from around the world like mexico, costa rica and even spain. That makes his job a lot of fun, but it also gives him a great responsibility and while jesus takes his job seriously, he still has moments that bring out the child from mexico cheering on his team. During the gamedays we always have like jerry rice on the sidelines and when you look at him, its like unreal. Thats jerry rice, you know. Thats the g. O. A. T. Touchdown 49ers Deebo Samuels . Reporter hes developed a catch phrase for big plays. Im like okay [ speaking in a global language ] which basically means goodbye, everybody, and touchdown, 49ers. Reporter and even taught us how to say faithful to the bay in spanish, but some terms just dont need translating. When you say touchdown, everybody understands this no matter what language they speak. Reporter its a reminder regardless where you live and what culture you come from, the love of the game can unite us all. In sports, football in this case, brings people together no matter where youre from. As we check in with darren peck, it did look a little hazy. Is that going to impact the game tonight . It wont impact the game. I would say this is going to be a big audience there. People will make the choices they deal is within their level of comfort. Its not like this is a Significant Health risk to be out there. Youd be hearing more about it. Id say if youve been wheezing a lot lately, maybe watch the game at home. I think most people will probably be fine. Were looking at moderate air quality now, better than the unhealthy stuff yesterday. Lets talk about the temperatures for a moment. Weve got other things on our mind now, but look at daytime highs today. Nobody got out of the 70s. Everybody was below average, some places a lot more than others. If you look at the number for santa rosa at 73 degrees today, that was 11 degrees below average and santa rosa has the most interesting forecast of any of the other microclimates and the entire north bay does, marin, sonoma, napa counties. You guys have a chance of rain coming monday, small, but the first of the season. Air quality is top of mind and the reason why this is still a first alert day and tomorrow will be one as well because weve been exposed to enough smoke over the last few days even though the air quality is going to get a little better tomorrow, theres still an air quality alert for tomorrow and this is cumulative. So still think about the next few days going easy on your lungs. By saturday and sunday it will be better. Lets talk about the chance of rain. First one to fall, fall officially starting late tomorrow night and then on monday the first system coming out of the pacific will try to make it feel like it. We look at the big picture. That one falls apart. Look at the one behind it and watch the way this thing comes together. That looks pretty impressive. Its got the comma shape to it. There is actually a moderate component of an Atmospheric River in this. Were not going to inundate you with that yet. This is not a major storm or a big rainmaker, but it is interesting to note this storm this early in the season is already pulling in some characteristics of it that the Scripps Institute has already said it has a moderate Atmospheric River to it. Thats a big issue up north, but for us just on the southern tail end of it and its just the first one. This is the only one that looks like it will get far enough south to get us. I want you to see from now through the end of the month, theres a series of them coming into the pacific northwest. This is great news from a fire standpoint, if nothing else. More on that the next couple days and coming weeks hopefully, but lets talk about the possibility for rain from this first one. Theres your Atmospheric River going into the redwood coast through eureka and our Little Branch of it looks like that. Thats not much, but it is a chance for stop rain nonetheless. That next one falls apart, doesnt even get here. Let me show you what the rainfall totals could look like monday when we look at Northern California as a whole. Thats 2 1 4 inches for eureka. Thats pretty good. The smoke coming our way from the smith river complex is right in the middle of that bulls eye. Thats really the important aspect of this. From the Bigger Picture standpoint it starts to really put the kibosh on fire season, doesnt end it, but what mild fire season its been, this rain event will work in our favor from a smoke concern. Maybe santa rosa comes away with. 15inch of rain from it. Temperatures will get cooler in the north bay from this. When we look at San Francisco and oakland, you get a chance of rain, less than a 0. 1inch. The inland east bay communities have a chance of rain community. See you with more coming up in the next half hour. Back to you. Thanks so much. Wheres the fruit . A bay area man part of a lawsuit against starbucks for their line of refresher drinks. Hollywood writers are reportedly close to an agreement that could end the several month long strike, the union and studios meeting a second time this week. The Writers Guild of america began picketing may 2nd. Theyre seeking a contract that addresses residual payments and what role Artificial Intelligence will play in the creation of movies and tv shows. There is optimism throughout hollywood with negotiations resuming, but some in the union are skeptical theyll actually get what they want. Theyre talking right now, but honestly, all the press that were seeing coming out it, could be the studios saying it could end today and that could just be them trying to lampoon and destroy the confidence of the people marching today. As we enter the fall tv schedule, many shows have postponed their new seasons until the strikes are resolved. The Alameda County Coroners Office says actor angus cloud died from an accidental overdose that was the result of a lethal combination of methamphetamine, fentanyl, cocaine, and benzodiazepine. The bay area native best known for his role in the show euphoria died at his family home in oakland july 31st. His family said shortly after his death that he was dealing with the devastating loss of his father just days earlier. A lawsuit against starbucks over a fruit drink thats missing the advertised fruit, thats the claim against the coffee giant over its refreshers line of drinks. Fairfield resident Jason Mcallister is one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit and said the drinks do not have mango, Passion Fruit or asai as advertised. Starbucks said the allegations are inaccurate and without merit. The lawsuit is seeking 5 million in damages. When we come back, how a bay area restaurant is surviving inflation by doing the unthinkable, why they actually lowered their prices for customers. And the fall travel season is here and its expected to look a lot different from previous years, what experts say you should know. Plus cat got your tongue . Need a catchy line on a first date . Well show you how a stanford student is using Artificial Intelligence for right now at 5 30, the Restaurant Industry was one of the hardest hit during the pandemic and now stubbornly high inflation is forcing many businesses to cut costs or raise prices. But one bay area restaurant is bucking that trend. We would rather shut this restaurant down than lower a single wage or lower the quality of our product. According to the most recent Consumer Price index, food prices were up more than 4 in august compared to the year earlier. Thats on top of a nearly 11 jump between 2021 and 2022. As you can imagine, thats got a lot of restaurants passing the extra cost on to their customers, but one San Francisco restaurant is making a point of lowering prices instead. Lauren toms explains why. Reporter one hour before opening its doors, the team here races to get ready for the evening ahead, but this week theyre hoping to see more familiar faces. The restaurant is trying something nearly unheard of in pricey San Francisco. Theyve lowered their prices for both food and wine. We started to see less and less of those familiar faces and that became a problem to us when we really did start noticing that. A certain segment of the community had been priced out from at
