Police say the man who entered this bank last week was wearing a dark hat, dark sunglasses, and a black sweatshirt. But they say he didnt conceal his fingerprints on a demand note. Reporter Authorities Say a Bank Surveillance video showing a robber with armsful of cash may have played a role. While Bank Robberies are serious and people may be hurt or killed, customers at this bank say they see the lighter side. This bank has been robbed i have been here about six years three times. A commander accused of ripping off an 82yearold homeowner. Pleasanton police say Matthew Messier and his wife placed the victims entire estate into a trust they controlled. Police say messier used his position in Law Enforcement to gain the victims trust. Messier resigned from the Pinole PoliceDepartment Last month. Police arrested him on thursday, yesterday. They are still looking for his wife. Say goodbye to wonder bread and twinkies. Hostess brands is going out of business. The company is struggling with bankruptcy, changing tastes and employees on strike. Dozens of people will lose their job at the hostess bakery in oakland. Reporter the fbi now taking the lead in this investigation. And Alameda County sheriffs deputies which actually made the arrest say there is no question what was found here was dangerous. The incident occurred here at the terminal 2 security checkpoint at the Oakland International airport. Authorities say 49yearold Jeffrey Mcgann a 49yearold resident of Rancho Palos Verdes was trying to botched a flight home to l. A. X. When he attempted to pass through the security checkpoint with a very suspicious watch. The watch had on it a toggle switch, a series of fuses, a series of wires protruding from it, a circuit board, and the watch itself which was on incorrect time. Reporter it wasnt just the watch that drew authorities attention, it was his overall behavior and an unusual alteration to his boots. Be they also had what appeared to be a homemade cavity in there and he was very evasive on everything he was doing. Reporter while no actual explosives were found on mcgann, nor in his luggage, Authorities Say theres no question he was carrying potentially dangerous materials. It absolutely could have been a triggering device. Obviously he was missing a couple of things along the way. Reporter passengers were alarmed to hear of the security scare but say they have confidence in their overall security at the airport. I mean, everything now is pretty much considered suspicious. Thank you, mark sayre in oakland a 65yearold woman kidnapped, beaten sexually assaulted and the suspects is a 14yearold boy. It started at a store on plaza drive in vallejo. The woman was found duct taped in a ditch on 80. Anne makovec reports. We had a conversation with the victim. She is an incredibly strong insightful woman. Reporter this lieutenant is referring to a 56yearold woman kid 65yearold woman kidnapped and assaulted at gunpoint by a 14yearold boy starting at a Shopping Center on plaza drive in vallejo late yesterday afternoon. Police say the boy forced the woman to drive her minivan a few miles then stopped to assault her both physically and sexually. It was an extremely serious violent attack. Severe head trauma. Her eyes were swollen shut. Reporter the teen left the woman unconscious bound in duct tape on highway 80 found by passersby. They summoned aid for her, took care of her and got her treatment. They also provided information to the police which ultimately assisted us in making the arrest. Reporter as police were gathering those clues, they say the teen called one of the victims family members demanding ransom money. Police arrested the boy soon after, back at the Shopping Center, still in possession of the womans van. They say his handgun turned out to be a replica. That 14yearold is now in Juvenile Hall facing charges including attempted murder, carjacking and kidnapping for ransom. It will be up to the d. A. If he is charged as an adult. He says a lot of the merchandise may be stolen from retail stores, several upscale boutiques in downtown San Francisco recently hit by a gang of teens known on the street as the rainbow girls. In palo alto, another gang of shoplifters recently pulled off an 11,000 bra heist at a victorias secret store. Its a very organized network. We have people that committee the crime and people that sell them to these middlemen who pay the people who shop lift and and people in turn sell them to the people selling them on the streets. Now at 6 30 a suspect wanted in california and nevada caught at a San Francisco steakhouse. Well, tonight Police Credit a sharp eyed off duty oakland officer with that arrest. It happened at a ruths chris steakhouse on van ness avenue in San Francisco. As cbs 5 reporter da lin tells us, the man under arrest is suspected in numerous east bay felonies. Reporter what was supposed to be a romantic Birthday Dinner for an offduty oakland Police Officer turned into a crimefighting date involving a most wanted fugitive. Oakland police say this man, 20 yearold ronnie flenaugh, had been on the run for six months. He was my number one target out in east oakland. Reporter in fact, just an hour before the arrest in San Francisco, Oakland Police flew out to las vegas and raided a home where they thought flenaugh was hiding. He wasnt there. Instead, he and a big group of people walked into a steakhouse in San Francisco where an off duty oakland Police Officer was celebrating his wifes birthday. What drew the attention to the offduty officer is that a gentleman walked in with a hooded sweatshirt over his head a baseball cap pulled down low and the sweatshirt drawn closely around his face. Reporter but the oakland officer recognized flenaugh, called for backup and wait for the group to eat dinner. As they walked out, armed officers surrounded them. Police say he is the head of a very violent east oakland gang. Investigators linked him to countless armed robberies and shootings in oakland and surrounding cities. We could say without a doubt that there are murders that can be attributed to mr. Flenaugh. Reporter they say his gang also had a number of shootouts with rival gangs in east oakland. One of the retaliatory shootings mr. Flenaughs wife was shot eight times while she sat in front of the School Picking up her children after school in broad daylight. Reporter the shootings happened more than a month ago. His wife survived her injuries. But that was another example of how dangerous these people are. Police said the shooter opened fire in front of kids and parents. Thats why police are glad flenaugh is now in custody. Were hoping that his arrest can kind of squash some of the ongoing retaliatory issues that are happening. Reporter in oakland, im da lin, cbs 5. A cutting torch is blamed for igniting an oil platform explosion in the gulf of mexico. This happened around 25 miles southeast of grand isle, louisiana. At least two people were killed. Four others were hurt. Two people are still missing. The coast guard says only a small amount of oil spilled from that platform. Israel is preparing to escalate its military operations against hamas in gaza. Troops in Armored Vehicles are gathering on the border and 16,000 israeli reservists have been called up. Israels defense minister is also seeking to mobilize as many as 75,000 more. Also today, hamas launched rockets at jerusalem. That marks a serious escalation of the conflict that began when israel assassinated the military chief of hamas in response to a hamas rocket attack on israel. Closer to home, hundreds are protesting the violence in the middle east outside the israeli consulate in San Francisco. Propalestinian demonstrators say israeli air strikes are attacking innocent civilians. There are a few dozen israel supporters at the same location. They say continuous rocket attacks from hamas have left israel no choice but to take action. Israels consulgeneral in San Francisco warns that things could get more serious. At the moment there are about 4. 5 million israelis in bomb shelters including my family. This is unstainable. The government must protect its people. Thats the responsibility of every government. It doesnt matter if its israel or american or british or any other government. They have to protect their citizens. And whatever it takes, well do it. And if its not enough to do what were doing now, then, yes, a ground operation is a possibility. Israels two largest cities have never before been exposed to rocket fire from hamas. Congressional leaders seem optimistic they can reach a deal avoid the socalled fiscal cliff. Lawmakers need to come to an agreement to avert tax increases and spending cuts that take effect january 1. Cbs 5 reporter grace lee on what they are saying about those negotiations. Reporter lets start with then to. It seemed intentionally promising, the tone. Congressional parties have to appear they are working hard to come to the middle. There is a lot of pressure on them now. While they have a long way to go, there was at least one immediate effect that we saw today. Ending the week with a rally wall street closed with the dow up 45 on hopes that a deal avoid the fiscal cliff may actually be nearing. We have to make sure that taxes dont go up on middle class families, that our economy remains strong that we are creating jobs. Reporter the president invited congressional leaders from both parties to the white house today to hammer out the owls of a compromise. Failure could be disastrous. Simultaneous tax increases and cutting Government Spending could mean a recession in 2013 in this high stakes game. The group appeared harmonious at least in front of the press. It was good. I feel confident that a solution may be in sight. I believe that the framework that i have outlined in our meeting today is consistent with the president s call for a fair and balanced approach. Reporter the president even took the time to wish the speaker a happy birthday. Were not going to embarrass him with a cake because we didnt know how many candles were needed. But damn right. [ laughter ] but we want to wish hm a happy birthday. Reporter there were hints that real negotiations took place today. Democrats say they are willing to reduce spending and cut programs while republicans implied they would be willing to raise taxes of some kind. To show our seriousness we have put revenue on the table as long as its accompanied by significant spending cuts. Were both going to have to give up some of the things that we know are a problem. Reporter so we have six weeks before the end of the year and Democratic Leaders are saying that them this finished before christmas. Senator reed even said they would be willing to work through the thanksgiving holiday to make sure that this happened but there are new indications just this evening that the republicans may be the ones to drag this out into 2013 so take one step forward two steps back so we will be watching this. Your piece of 1 billion this is a case we first reported on last year and attorney generals in 24 states have now reached a 1. 1 billion settlement. It stems from a price fixing schemes involving manufacturers like samsung, hitachi, sharp and a slew of companies that made displays for tvs and computers. An estimated 23 billion in price fixed panels were sold between 1999 and 2006. Consumers have until december 6 to file a claim for a cash settlement of anywhere between 25 and 200 depending on how many tvs, monitors and laptops you purchased. Well, now that hostess is going out of business, twinkies are selling like hotcakes. And apparently, so is twinkie merchandise. Twinkie the kit lunchboxes are a hot item. Ebay listed one 14. 99 last week sold for 690 today. Come on. Whoo. Thats right. If thats out of your price range there are others averaging 100 the tsa is easing up on restrictions. Reporter this is the 13th year theres been a formal adoption ceremony in Alameda County on National Adoption day. And the dream of a forever family came true for 19 children who until today had been part of the countys foster care system. Its a little scary and knowing that shes our responsibility now for the rest of her life. But its just finally a finalization and just so happy to finally have it all over with. Reporter david and hillary have three other adopted children. The youngest is now almost 25. And you wouldnt be the firstask them we have had a lot of people say that. Are you crazy . Family members have said that, are you crazy . You do what you have to do. Reporter judges and Court Employees put their regular jobs aside in order to expedite and finalize the adoption process for these children and for parents like marta. The idea came from a woman that we met at a soccer game for our son and she told us about foster to adopt and we wanted a second child so we decided to sign up and to get licensed and we were extremely fortunate that hanna came into our lives about four or five months later. Happy. Now he has a sister. It is National Adoption day. And if you are interested in adoption or foster care, contact your county social services office. Always nice to see happy kids.
