The bridge with an update. The bridge is on schedule. These people who are driving around this part of the bay area some of them stuck in traffic will have this bridge back when they need it monday morning. Take a look behind me. They are seeing work on the toll plaza here. Its a great time to get everything done so they are doing a lot of work out on the bridge doing work with wiring and telephone poles and painting. Lets take a look at whats going on. There are twelve 30foot sections to replacing. Crews have removed six old ones and installed three new ones. They are putting a fourth in place. It stems from a crack in a support structure on the bridge two years ago. What happened was two years ago we discovered a crack in a wishbone shaped girther under the bridge. It was part of the seismic retrofit in the late 90s so we repaired it bolted steel plates to the top and bottom of the girder but we knew we wanted more of an improvement than that. Reporter since the bridge was slated for seismic upgrade anyway they are doing all the work at once. Weekend closure to do work on bridges began in 2006 or 2007 with a major project on the bay bridge. Now says bob haus they are doing it regularly. When we did it for the first time with the bay bridge and successive closures since then we discovered it can be done as long as people have proper advance notice then and we do our best to pick the best time to do it and it hasnt been that bad. We have seen traffic levels heavier on the bridges and highways today but still not equal to that of what we see during a normal weekday. Reporter it is the new routine. So i suppose it will save us money and get things done in a hurry but right now its inconvenient. Monday morning at 5 a. M. We should be back in business.
