The report indicates senator warrens native american ancestors are between six and ten generations back. One of the Worlds Largest retailers sears has filed for bankruptcy. Its the end of an era. A nasa unit is searching to discover the true extent of Climate Change. The antarctica ice sheet is discharging two olympicsized swimming pools of ice into the ocean every second. Another royal on the way. Meghan and harry expecting their first baby this coming spring. That little one will be seventh in line to the throne. My guess, shes going to have either a boy or a girl, and when she does, she will give that person a name. Glor good evening. This is our western edition. Im jeff glor in kansas city. And this is the National World war i museum and memorial. This year is the 100th anniversary of the end of what was once called the war to end all wars. We have come to missouri as part of our special coverage of races that will decide control of the u. S. Senate in the midterms next month. Well have much more on that soon, but well begin tonight with breaking news in the disappearance nearly two weeks ago of saudi journalist jamal khashoggi. Cbs news has learned tonight the saudis are ready to reveal what happened to him. Major garrett is at the white house with more. Reporter President Trump emerged from a 20minute call with Saudi King Salman and echoed the kingdoms denial of responsibility for the suspected death of u. S. Based journalist jamal khashoggi. All i can do is report what he told me, and he told me in a very firm way that they had no knowledge of it. Reporter mr. Trump also raised this possible explanation. It sounded to me like maybe these could have been rogue killers. Leadership, who cbs news has learned is preparing to admit that khashoggis death is the result of an interrogation gone wrong. Khashoggi, a Washington Post contributor and outspoken critic of the saudi regime, entered the saudi consulate in istanbul, turkey, on october 2, but has not been seen since. The saudis have insisted he left on his own. At the president s direction, secretary of state mike pompeo flew to riyadh today for meetings with the royal family. Hes got instructions to find out what happened. Reporter he may next head to turkey where investigators today searched the consulate, part of a turkishsaudi inquiry into the disappearance. The president told lesley stahl of 60 minutes that his relationship to the kingdom might change if khashoggis death is confirmed. Were going to get to the bottom of it, and there will be severe punishment. Reporter but the president said he would not end a 110 billion saudi arms deal. Boeing, lockheed, raytheon, all these companies, i dont want to hurt jobs. Reporter former acting c. I. A. Director and cbs contributor michael morrell. I think if the saudis were involved you will see some delay in arms sales despite what the president says. Reporter the khashoggi saga has jeopardized Foreign Investment in the kingdom and raised the real possibility of u. S. Sanctions. The emerging and thats a key word emerging saudi explanation is the government meant only to interrogate the journalist, not kill him. And those responsible were initially reluctant to admit their deadly blunter. Its unclear if this will satisfy the kingdoms many human rights skeptics. Jeff . Glor all right, major with the latest on that emerging explanation, as you say. T e president flew to the sorida panhandle today to see for himself the devastation from hurricane michael. Five days after the storm hit, the search for victims continues and the recovery is just beginning. Isar villafranca reports on this. Reporter President Trump surveyed the damage from the air first look at homes reduced to rubble by the storm. To see this personally is t reporter the president and First Lady Melania Trump met lynn haven resident michael rollins, who rode out the storm with his three dogs. I did not know nature could be this bad. This one you could have passed on, right . Yes, sir. Reporter power crews have been working sun up to sun down to try and restore electricity to the tens of thousands of people in the hardesthit areas. The lines are long for gas in panama city, but five days after the storm slammed into the florida panhandle, patience is running thin. They told us to go to shelters. People aint got cars. People aint got gas. Reporter as search crews ch cinue working, a body was pulled from a swamp down the coast in cape san blas. Nothing like this. M reporter mark moore and tony beck say they tried to get the man to evacuate with them, but he stayed behind. Did you talk to him . Yo yes. Reporter what did you tell him . I told him he was out of his e nd, that he needed to go, and if he needed somewhere to go he could follow us. Reporter you offered him a seat in the car . Yes. Reporter Mexico Beach Police compiled a list of 230 people who said they were going to ride out the storm at their home. Arter that storm, search crews started going through homes house to house, like this one here, even searching piles of debris like this one here, and because cell phone coverage slightly increased, allowing lyople to call friends and atmily, theyve been able to whittle that number down to three people unaccounted for. Jeff . Glor omar, thanks. Slight increase but still a long way to go. The midterm elections are three weeks from tomorrow. With control of congress hanging si the balance, we have been visiting key battleground states, arizona last week, this week here in missouri. A cbs news poll shows democratic senator Claire Mccaskill locked in a tight battle with republican josh hawley, each at 45 . We have been traveling this state talking to voters and candidates in this very closely watched election. Its nasty. Its dirty. Its unfair. But you know what . Its worth it. Reporter that is the sound of missouri senator Claire Mccaskill fighting for her political life. She is a 65yearold twoterm democrat in a state the president won in 2016 by nearly 20 points. How does Claire Mccaskill get things done for missouri . Reporter mccaskill did vote nearly half the time in support of President Trumps agenda. She hasnt kept it secret. I dont do a kneejerk opposition to the president. I try to figure out each nomination and each policy position based on the merits, and then i have to explain it to missourians. Ce glor but would you call his presidency a success . I think its a work in progress, and i think thats up to voters. This election is about saving our country. Llsenccas hy wi presi onmatt senator mccaskill and her democrat allies have a radical, leftwing agenda. Glor hawley is the states gtorney general, a 38yearold Law School Graduate who once once clerked for chief justice john roberts. He is a conservative who has hooked himself to the president id he hopes to the voters who put him in the white house. They did that because he said he would fight for our values and the things we believe in. I think hes doing that, and as long as hes doing that, i will be with him. Glor is there anything you disagree with . I would encourage him to keep nchard line on spending. I think the way congress has ourced this outrageous spending i him is something that is not good. Glor half of missouri voters are satisfied with the way things are going in the country. The other half are not. Mccaskill leads among women, hawley is ahead among men. One of the key issues here has been healthcare, and as a result, the attacks have been brutal. Some of the voters we met dont like it. It just seems like theyre attacking each other. That kind of muddies the water for me. You dont know what to believe or whatnot to believe. They are really mad. In fact, theyre hopping mad about Prescription Drug price increases. They are frustrated at the idea that the protections for r eexisting conditions and the other Consumer Protections that are in the law now are in jeopardy. Step up, step up, step up. Glor hawley, whose young son suffers from a degenerative bone disease, opposes obamacare but says he still wants Insurance Companies to cover people with preexisting conditions. The federal government should directly guarantee that folks who have a preexisting condition get rates, premiums, deductibles the same as everybody else. Glor thats still mandating that people have coverage, ght . No, no, no. It says that those who have thoxisting conditions should be able to buy insurance at the same rates and prices as everybody else. Glor on the Brett Kavanaugh battle, hawley says he would have voted for. Mccaskill voted against. The last thing in the world we need is the Supreme Court to be a reflection of what congress has become tribal warfare. Glor was it tribal warfare in politics when you were first elected . Not as much. All of the noise is generated on the ends of the spectrum. We need more noise in the middle. Glor senator mccaskill says you dont use the word compromise. If you go to washington, can you compromise . Sure. I think its about representing the people of your state. So you have to be willing to cross party lines. You have to be willing to be independent. Ill work with anybody on any tpic if its good for the people of my state. Glor mccaskill versus hawley here in missouri. Republicans have a slim 5149 majority in the senate. So every seat is critical, including this one here. Nancy cordes is our chief congressional correspondent. Shes here with us tonight. Nancy, good to see you. E , seat critical. Why should voters nationally care about whats happening here in missouri . Reporter because for all the talk about democratic enthusiasm and fundraising this cycle, jeff, they drew a tough hand when it comes to the senate. You have ten democratic incumbents up for reelection in states like this one that President Trump won back in 2016. And compare that to republicans who have only one incumbent up for reelection in a state that Hillary Clinton won. So you have candidates like Claire Mccaskill who are known as moderates, maybe have a track record of reaching out to independent voters, but theyre still in the fight of their political lives. Democrats have a shot at taking control of the house, but they could lose a seat or two in the senate. Glor a similar thing is playing out in other states right now. Itis is also a huge gauge of the test of the popularity of the president. Sure. And his Approval Rating has fallen here in missouri, in other red states, but not by as , ch as it has fallen in the country overall. Hes still at about 50 here. Thats why hawley, when you asked him where he diverges with the president , he was reluctant to create much distance there. The president is still an asset. Glor and mccaskill also reluctant to criticize the president on some issues. Nancy cordes, thank you very much. In a 60 minutes interview last night, President Trump took a step back from his prior claim that Climate Change is a hoax. But he told lesley stahl he does not want to spend a lot of money on efforts to reverse it. Mark phillips traveled to the bottom of the world, flying with nasas operation ice bridge, the most extensive effort yet to measure changes in antarcticas glaciers and ice sheets. Here he is with tonights climate diary. Reporter this is not just a joyride over some spectacular scenery. Too low, terrain. Too low, terrain. Reporter this is a lowlevel aerial sortie in a new kind of information war. Nasa is here in antarctica gathering ammunition, otherwise known as Scientific Data in the battle over Climate Change. Basically we need to know whats happening to the climate, and specifically the sea level. Reporter john sonntag has been flying these missions since they started ten years ago. So we already know that large parts of antarctica have been thinning a whole lot in the last 20 years or so. And not only that, they are poised to thin at a faster rate in the future and raise sea level much faster than were thrrently seeing. Reporter these flights are part of nasas annual Antarctic Campaign that flies out of the southern tip of chile. Using an old dc8 jammed with the newest scientific instruments and the scientists to run them. They fly at just 1,500 feet using lasers, radar, photography, even gravity censors to measure the volume and the mass of the ice. Instruments that tell scientists like joe mcgregor what is happening below. Presently the Antarctic Ice sheet is discharging more than two olympicsized swimming pools worth of ice into the ocean every second. Reporter every second . At that rate it is now feared antarctica alone could cause as much as six inches of Sea Level Rise this century, making flooding in places like miami, or new orleans, or new york worse and much more freq. Why is that er but the seas are warming. This expanse of icebergs and thin ice used to be a solid ice Shelf Holding back a glacier until warmer water broke it up. Then what happens is the cork is out of the bottle and the ice can accelerate for a while. Reporter so the melt rate increases. Effectively, yes, overall. Reporter that glacier is now racing into the ocean at twice the speed. This plane is doing some of the hottest Climate Science on the planet in the coldest place on earth, and the general atnclusion after a decade is that what used to seem frozen and permanent is now fluid and chng. And changing fast. Mark phillips, cbs news, over antarctica. Re glor coming up next here on the cbs evening news, from kansas city, what we are learning about this flu season. Reporter the pediatric death in florida was an unvaccinated child with no known underlying condition. This comes as a new National Survey shows some parents dont see the benefits of the flu vaccine. It found more than half believe that their children can actually contract the flu from the vaccine and onethird believe the shot does not protect their kids from the flu at all. In addition, 28 believe that it can cause autism. Infectious disease specialist dr. William schaffner.
